AIDC–EC launches a multi-phased roll-out initiative of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure

Today marks a significant milestone in the Eastern Cape’s automotive sector as the Eastern Cape government, through the Automotive Industry Development Centre Eastern Cape (AIDC–EC) launches a multi-phased roll-out initiative of Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Infrastructure to support and encourage use of electric vehicles and promote beneficiation thereof in two regions consecutively.

The first ever government owned (public) and universal EV Charging Stations in the province, catapulted by AIDC-EC in their quest to deliver progress and convenience to citizens.

  • The first being at Dan’s Lodge between Umtata and Tsolo in the OR Tambo region – up and running as of 23rd
  • The second one is at the Virgin Active on Esplanade, Quigney in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality in East London – as of today.

This roll-out aims at keeping pace with the anticipated surge in adoption of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) and the expansion of the required supporting charging infrastructure.

The global automotive landscape is undergoing profound transformation triggered by climate mitigation and adaptation legislation as well as the associated technological disruptions causing for progress to be made in creating an environment suitable for EVs. This has resulted to government policy support the manufacturing and sales of EVs in South Africa coupled with the need to reduce carbon emissions.

Figures released by industry body, The Automotive Business Council (NAAMSA), the sale of EVs accounted for in South Africa were 1,080 units in 2023.

These launch events follow AIDC-EC’s relentless efforts to identify strategic locations for these charging stations, ensuring widespread accessibility across the province. By partnering with local stakeholders and leveraging existing infrastructure, this project aims to provide seamless charging solutions and beyond through 13 charging stations planned for roll-out in the current financial year.

The EV White Paper, published in November 2023, underscores the importance of transitioning to EVs as both a challenge and an opportunity for the South African automotive industry. This was welcomed by the Eastern Cape Provincial Government through the Premier and MEC, Mlungisi Mvoko, in its submissions.

The occasion was graced with the presence of the Honourable MEC of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism; and Finance, Mlungisi Mvoko.

As we power ahead the Eastern Cape stands poised to lead the charge towards a cleaner, greener future for all.
