Frogfoot RISE fuels business growth and positive community impact at BareMetal

Frogfoot RISE fuels business growth and positive community impact at BareMetal
Frogfoot

BareMetal is a South African company with its headquarters in Cape Town. It was founded in 2011 to offer a range of professional Information Technology services, mainly in the form of wireless internet. The company’s goal is to assist small businesses, individuals and companies through its expertise and range of IT business services.

The company was looking to extend the range of services that it offers in order to cater to a more diverse market, including informal businesses, households, and underserved communities that previously had limited access to reliable internet.

Growth opportunities with fibre

In order to achieve this objective, BareMetal partnered with Frogfoot RISE, a provider of prepaid, uncapped internet access in underserved communities. By providing robust and reliable fibre optic infrastructure, Frogfoot ensures that BareMetal has access to high-speed, scalable internet that can help the company continue to grow while meeting the evolving needs of their customers. Having a dedicated customer support team always on hand to address any issues quickly and efficiently, helps BareMetal minimise downtime and maintain a seamless experience for their end-users.

By integrating fibre into its service portfolio, BareMetal has significantly enhanced its service delivery, while being able to offer high-speed, reliable connectivity has broadened the company’s client base and solidified its position as a key player in the digital landscape.

“Transitioning from a Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) to a Fibre Internet Service Provider (ISP) has been a transformative shift for BareMetal, largely due to our partnership with Frogfoot RISE. The robust infrastructure, technical support, and access to previously unattainable customers has allowed us to scale our offerings,” says Graham Khan, CTO at BareMetal.

Bridging the digital divide

The growth seen as a result of this transition has also empowered BareMetal to make a tangible positive impact on local communities through the creation of numerous employment opportunities, both directly within the company and through partnerships with local organisations. This includes a focus on upskilling community members by providing training in areas such as fibre sales, support procedures, customer support, and even technical maintenance.

As an example, Khan says that one of the company’s early hires, a local youth named Asenathi, joined BareMetal as a general sales agent, and after undergoing training, is now leading its fibre sales & support team that includes five staff members. “Stories like Asenathi’s are a testament to how partnerships like ours with Frogfoot RISE can foster personal growth and uplift entire communities,” says Khan.

“This collaboration with Frogfoot has allowed us to bridge the digital divide in remote areas that were previously neglected. The benefits extend beyond just connectivity, as local businesses can now thrive, students have reliable access to online learning, and essential services are more easily accessible through the power of high-speed internet.”

Back-to-school smart: Reclaim family time with easy Lunch Prep

Back-to-school smart: Reclaim family time with easy Lunch Prep
Lunch Prep

Work, school runs, lunch boxes, and homework—the daily routine is back in full swing for South African families after the festive season. While every parent treasures family time, with memories of the holidays still fresh, the everyday grind can feel unrelenting. Juggling work, school, cooking, cleaning, homework, lunch prep, baths, and bedtimes often leaves little room for meaningful moments. Where’s the time for romping with your children, reading bedtime stories, or sharing a quiet chat over hot chocolate?”

But this year, instead of running on autopilot, why not take a step back and reimagine your routine?

According to FUTURELIFE® Dietitian Sonal Ratan, smart lunch preparation could be one of the keys to reclaiming up to 20 minutes a day. “By simply setting aside half an hour once a week, preferably on a Sunday night, you can transform your daily lunchbox routine,” says Ratan. “That’s six and a half extra hours each month to dedicate to family time that previously might have slipped away in the normal daily rush. And the bonus? No dreaded last-minute lunch box panic.”

Ratan shares her top tips for making lunch prep efficient and nutritious:

1. Freezer Magic
Prepare sandwiches in advance. Fillings like, chicken mayo, roast beef, tuna, or egg mayo freeze exceptionally well. Store them in the freezer in reusable sandwich bags and simply defrost them by placing them in the fridge overnight. You can also bake and freeze FUTURELIFE® Smart Muffins for up to three months (just click on https://futurelife.co.za/blogs/recipes/futurelife-smart-snack-muffins for the recipe).
Pro Tip: Skip veggies like cucumbers and lettuce—they tend to get soggy when frozen. Pack these as a side snack instead.

2. Cool and Refreshing
Freezing diluted fruit juice or water in 500ml bottles doubles as a refreshing drink and a lunchbox cooler. “This hack keeps the lunch fresh and gives kids a perfectly chilled drink by break time,” says Ratan. Plus, reusing bottles means less plastic waste.
Pro Tip: 500ml bottles fit snugly in most lunch bags and are freezer-friendly.

3. Breakfast-on-the-Go
Need to get the kids to school bright and early for morning sports training and it’s just too soon for breakfast? Offer them a fruit snack, and for after training, pack a shaker with 150-200ml of water and a separate container with 50g of FUTURELIFE® Smart food™ for quick and convenient mixing. Everything can be measured and prepped in advance, making for a quick and convenient breakfast on the go!
And, if you have a child who struggles to wake up in the morning and ends up with no time for breakfast, make them a quick smoothie that they can enjoy in the car. Simply blend FUTURELIFE® Smart food™, milk and a fruit and decant into a reusable smoothie cup.
Pro Tip: For afternoon sports, try the  FUTURELIFE® ENERGIZE High Energy Shake Vanilla flavour or their new Banana flavour—no prep required!

4. Snack Prep Made Simple
Pre-portion snacks like dried fruit, nuts, FUTURELIFE® GRANOLA CRUNCH Smart food™, or FUTURELIFE® RICE POPS into reusable containers on Sunday evenings for the week. Freeze fruits like berries, grapes, peeled bananas or pineapple for a cool treat.
Pro Tip: While berries and tropical fruits freeze well, avoid freezing apples, oranges, and watermelons—they don’t thaw well.

“By streamlining tasks like lunch preparation, you free up valuable time in your daily routine,” concludes Ratan. “It’s just about reassessing your habits and, with a bit of planning, you can enhance your family’s nutrition while creating more opportunities for connection.”

Adizero Adios Pro 4 Leads the Way As Adidas Introduces New Race Silhouette to Its Award-Winning, Record Breaking Adizero Franchise

Adizero Adios Pro 4 Leads the Way As Adidas Introduces New Race Silhouette to Its Award-Winning, Record Breaking Adizero Franchise
adidas’ Adizero Adios Pro

Since its introduction in 2020, adidas’ Adizero Adios Pro range has consistently dominated the podiums, featuring on the feet of more World Marathon Majors winning athletes than any other brand.

Building on this legacy, adidas is introducing a new era of fast with the launch of the Adizero Adios Pro 4. The race-ready Adios Pro 4 is engineered for peak performance, and offers athletes optimal support during race preparation. The new release is designed to help athletes achieve top performance on race day.

ADIZERO ADIOS PRO 4 – DESIGNED TO BREAK RECORDS

Developed at adidas’ Innovation Lab in Herzogenaurach, Germany, and tested extensively with consumers and top athletes across multiple countries, including elite runners in Iten, Kenya, Japan, and the US, the Adizero Adios Pro 4 combines proven race-winning technology with fresh Adizero design aesthetics. Product teams and engineers drew on insights from earlier Pro silhouettes to refine and enhance the new racing shoe for optimal performance and speed.

Key updates include:

NEW FOREFOOT ROCKER POINT GEOMETRY

  • Inspired by the revolutionary Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1, the forefoot rocker – the point at which the sole curves upward underneath the toes or forefoot – is placed at 60% of the length of the shoe. This is lab-tested to trigger forward momentum and improve running economy. Alongside this, the shoe boasts a full-length Lightstrike Pro midsole, providing runners with a lighter and softer feeling as their feet hit the ground.

LIGHTLOCK UPPER

  • The shoe introduces a first-of-its-kind lightweight, one-way stretch woven mesh upper that is paired with internal locking bands for a snug and secure feeling when running at high speed. This is matched with a new lacing system, which provides a locked-down fit for runners.

LIGHTTRAXION OUTSOLE

  • After studying strike patterns of some of adidas’ leading athletes, to understand where grip was needed most, these insights were translated into a new patterned outsole that maps material to key areas.

“We’re kicking off fall marathon season strong with a bold update to our most successful silhouette ever – the Adios Pro.”

says Charlotte Heidmann, Global Category Director Running Footwear at adidas. “The shoe was developed with and for some of the world’s fastest including Agnes Ngetich, Benson Kipruto and Amos Kipruto, underlining our commitment to serving our athletes with innovation that propels their race-winning pace.”

The Adizero Adios Pro 4 weighs approximately 200g (men’s) and 172g (women’s). *Based on UK8.5.

Ford’s Struandale Engine Plant in Nelson Mandela Bay has played an instrumental role in the success of the locally assembled Ford Ranger – both in South Africa and in the more than 100 markets it is exported to around the world.

All the engines used in the Silverton-built Ford Ranger are proudly manufactured at the Gqeberha facility, using the latest technologies and advanced quality management systems to ensure the highest level of performance, reliability and durability that Ranger is renowned for.

This video provides insight into the Struandale operations which currently produces three different diesel engine programmes, comprising the silky smooth and powerful 3.0L V6 Diesel, the refined and efficient 2.0L Single Turbo and 2.0L Bi-Turbo Diesel, as well as the renowned 2.2L and 3.2L Duratorq TDCi.

10 interesting facts on the Struandale Engine Plant:

  1. This plant opened in 1964, making it the first dedicated engine assembly plant in South Africa
  2. It has produced 11 different engine programmes over the past 60 years: Essex V6, V4, Kent, 2.0L OHC, CVH, Pte, Mazda B-Series, RoCam, and current production of the 2.2L/3.2L Duratorq TDCi, 2.0L Single Turbo/Bi-Turbo and 3.0L V6 Diesel
  3. The Struandale plant machines the cylinder heads for the 3.0L V6 Diesel engine, and assembles the engines
  4. In a Ford-first, the same assembly line also produces the 2.2L and 3.2L Duratorq TDCi engines. The combined installed capacity of this line is 130 000 engines per annum. It can produce one engine every 120 seconds

Beyond The “I Do’s”: The Magic of Honeymoons

Beyond The “I Do's”: The Magic of Honeymoons
Honeymoon

A honeymoon is more than a tradition; it’s a unique beginning to married life. As Lamont After months of meticulous planning and a wedding day filled with joyous celebrations, a cherished and timeless tradition takes centre stage for newlyweds —their honeymoon. This getaway offers a much-needed opportunity to unwind after the flurry of activity leading up to the big day. It’s a time to connect and bond on a deeper level and celebrate their union in a way that’s special to them. “More than just a holiday, it’s a meaningful start to married life in a setting designed for romance, says Shaun Lamont, CEO of First Group.

“Let’s be honest, planning a wedding can be a whirlwind of excitement, but it can also be stressful, with countless lists and endless decisions,” he notes. “When the big day finally arrives, it often leaves couples exhilarated but drained. That’s why honeymoons are so special – they provide a much-needed pause—a chance to just be together, recharge and savour the start of married life in a relaxed, intimate setting.”

The term “honeymoon” originates from the 16th century, combining “hony,” symbolising the sweetness of early marriage, and “moone,” reflecting the fleeting nature of time. Over the centuries, this tradition evolved into the “bridal tours” of the 19th century, where couples travelled to visit family and celebrate their union. Today, the honeymoon represents an escape from the dailyness to focus entirely on each other.

Honeymoon

To make the most of this special time, Lamont suggests focusing on what matters most to you as a couple, and offers these practical tips for planning your perfect honeymoon:

•  Start planning early: This gives you time to save, research destinations and take advantage of special offers. Once you’ve determined the potential savings, set up an automatic monthly transfer to a dedicated honeymoon savings account. This way, a portion of your income will be securely set aside before any temptation to spend it arises.
•  Set realistic expectations: Your budget might not stretch to an exotic, luxury island resort but ultimately, what matters most is the time spent together.
•  Book Direct for Less: Book directly with your hotel or resort of choice. Gone are the days when OTA’s (Online Travel Agencies) offered the best deals. Worldwide, leading hotel groups like First Group, have sweetened the deal for guests with discounts and specials to improve the overall customer experience, from booking to checkout. You won’t be disappointed.
•  Private Browsing for Flight Savings: Unmask the covert side of holiday planning with the power of private browsing. By opening a new private window through the browser’s file menu, you can prevent airlines from inflating prices based on your search history. This smart tactic ensures that flights are secured at the best possible rates.
•  Consider timing carefully: You don’t have to leave immediately after the wedding—travelling during off-peak seasons usually means cheaper rates, fewer crowds and no school holiday disruptions.
•  Make it personal: Choose experiences that reflect your interests as a couple, whether adventure, relaxation or a bit of both.

South Africa’s diverse landscapes provide countless romantic settings for newlyweds. First Group’s properties, for instance, perfectly capture this natural beauty: from the magical Club Mykonos in Langebaan or Mount Sierra at the foot of Table Mountain in the Western Cape to the breathtaking lower Southern Berg views at Midlands Saddle and Trout, which also offers intimate wedding facilities. For stunning ocean views, there’s the La Montagne Hotel in Ballito or Breakers Resort in Umhlanga Rocks. With many other exceptional local and even international First Group resorts, some offering spa facilities, there’s something to accommodate every newlywed’s dream honeymoon.

“A honeymoon is more than just a tradition, it should be as unique as your love story in a setting designed for romance,” Lamont concludes. “Whether you dream of barefoot walks on pristine beaches, mountain adventures, or indulgent luxury, this cherished time will create lasting, magical memories as you begin your next chapter together.”

Drostdy Hotel
Escape to the Drostdy Hotel in the heart of Graaff Reinet, where two centuries of history meet modern luxury. Originally built in 1804, the Drostdy has undergone meticulous refinement over the years, to become one of South Africa’s most beloved heritage hotels.

This magnificent 48 room boutique 5-star hotel offers opulent accommodation, outstanding Karoo cuisine, an Africology Spa, an art gallery and wine shop. Plus, the chance to explore South Africa’s fourth oldest town which has more than 200 heritage sites and monuments.

The Drostdy Hotel has recently partnered with Air du Cap which flies from the Cape to Graaff Reinet in under two hours. Based at Cape Winelands Airport, Air du Cap specializes in providing charter flights across the Western, Eastern, and Northern Cape in their flagship Beechcraft Baron 58.

Both Air du Cap and the Drostdy Hotel are pet-friendly. Small and medium dogs are welcome in specific pet-friendly rooms, and on arrival, will receive their own water bowl, food bowl and a comfortable dog bed.

“We are delighted to collaborate with Air du Cap to offer our guests an exceptional and seamless travel experience,” says Tarryn Farrell, Sales and Marketing Director for Africa at Valor Hospitality. “The convenience of a charter flight, combined with our pet-friendly accommodation, ensures that every traveler – human or fur baby – can enjoy a truly memorable stay.”

It has been a decade since the Rupert Family Foundation donated the hotel to the SA College for Tourism (SACT), and together they have become an inspiring model of five-star service, sustainable tourism, and warm Karoo hospitality.

The SA College for Tourism is a registered Non-Profit Organisation founded in 2001 by Dr Anton Rupert with the mission to provide capacity building and economic empowerment for marginalised, unemployed, rural, and peri-urban youth, with a focus on women, in the hospitality industry.

In 2012 the Rupert Family Foundation bought the Drostdy Hotel and reopened it two years later, after extensive renovations. The hotel was donated to SACT which provides hospitality training for young women from impoverished rural backgrounds.

“By nurturing local talent we’re ensuring a thriving future for the tourism industry,” says Tony Romer-Lee, Co-Founder and Managing Partner AMEA. In addition to hospitality training, SACT also has a Tracker Academy.

The Drostdy Hotel has a long and lively history. It was first built in 1805 during the second occupation of the Cape by the Dutch, by architect Louis Thibault as a residence for the landrost (a Boer magistrate prior to the establishment of British administration) and it hosted many important historical characters.

In 1878 the hotel was bought by Henry Kromm in 1878 and converted into a hotel that became known as Kromm’s Drostdy Hotel. After Kromm sold it in 1903 it continued as a hotel under various owners until its acquisition in 1975 by Historical Homes of South Africa when the building was again restored and became a national monument.

“We have honoured the heritage of this remarkable building”, says the director of the Drostdy Hotel, John Loftie-Eaton, “yet also elevated it to luxury accommodation. We remain dedicated to honouring the hotel’s past while ensuring it remains a vibrant part of the future of the Karoo. All of this is a true reflection of the incredible vision and support from the Rupert family.”

De Beers Group is proud to announce the winners of the 2024 Shining Light Awards, a jewellery design competition dedicated to empowering the next generation of designers from the countries where De Beers recovers diamonds, including Botswana, Canada, Namibia and South Africa.

Originally launched in 1995, the Shining Light Awards are part of the De Beers Group Designers Initiative, a youth beneficiation skills development initiative aimed at cultivating world-class jewellery design and manufacturing skills within De Beers Group’s host countries. The competition runs every two years and is open to jewellery designers aged 18 to 35 who are in their final year of a jewellery design programme, have already graduated or who have relevant experience in jewellery design.

This year’s design theme, “Luxury Redefined”, invited entrants to present innovative, authentic and inclusive visions of luxury, while celebrating diversity. Each entry included designs for a complete jewellery collection featuring a ring, necklace, earrings, bangles and bracelets. A total of 104 entries were submitted this year, from which 22 finalists representing each country were selected.

Moses Madondo, CEO of De Beers Group Managed Operations, said: “The Shining Light Awards are a testament to De Beers Group’s commitment to beneficiation in the countries where we recover diamonds. By creating accessible opportunities within the diamond sector, we are actively investing in local talent, with a particular focus on supporting youth in our host countries to benefit from the diamond industry. Through the Shining Light Awards, we provide a platform that not only nurtures and develops emerging designers but also highlights the value of skills transfer, entrepreneurship, and creativity along the diamond value chain.
