The tiny home movement, which began in the United States in the 1970s, has been making its way to South Africa over the last few years and is gaining momentum. With the use of compact instant construction, particularly through 3D printing, it is becoming increasingly popular.
These unique spaces offer luxurious yet highly compact living solutions and are ideal for those seeking lower home maintenance or those embracing the digital, remote working lifestyle.
- Privacy Pods and Technological Integration
In larger areas, the use of pods and technology to ensure private conversations is on the rise, not only in storefronts for security and privacy, but also in office environments. This trend not only provides spaces where individuals can disconnect from their surroundings, but also enhances productivity by reducing distractions and promoting focused work.
- Bold Colours and Heritage Designs
South Africans are embracing bolder colours in their spaces, with burgundy and jade green becoming popular, adding vibrant tones to the environment. Added to this is a loud and proud appreciation of South African heritage, which continues to influence design. While European influences are present, local handcrafted elements and cultural designs remain prominent, emphasising uniqueness and authenticity.

Additionally, for the first time we are seeing businesses where you are able to rent or lease your furniture. The future will be rental versus purchase, allowing furniture to be repurposed, reused and enjoyed by many. The evolution of spaces without the need for ownership,is expected to grow, offering flexibility in home design and enabling individuals to adapt their living spaces to changing needs and tastes.
- Art in Kitchens
The kitchen is evolving into an aesthetically pleasing space, with a greater appreciation for art and design. Art stands are more prevalent, making kitchens both functional and delightful. Finish wise, metallic and tactile elements are on the rise, creating comfort and integration within the kitchen and other spaces around the home.
- Eastern Influences
The influence of Eastern design, particularly Japanese aesthetics, is becoming a fast-growing trend. This trend brings clean, grounded designs that resonate with a sense of connection and tranquillity.
