The Safari Guide of the Year Awards (SGOTY) has announced its top five finalists for 2025, showcasing Southern Africa’s most exceptional field guides. This prestigious recognition, founded in 2011 by Mike Karantonis, an independent Safari Guide, in partnership with Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA), celebrates the expertise, dedication, and passion of field guides across Southern Africa.

“For too long, field guiding was undervalued,” says FGASA’s Managing Director, Michelle du Plessis. “Through SGOTY, we celebrate guides who have achieved excellence, expanded their knowledge, and honed their practical expertise.”

For 2025, the SGOTY Awards will take place from June 19 to 22 at Kariega Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape’s picturesque Kariega River Valley. During this event, the top 5 guides will compete in a series of challenges that test their expertise, including:

A river cruise
  • Game Drive
  • Bush Walk
  • Guided Photographic Experience
  • Bird Slide and Sound
  • Track and Sign
  • Advanced Rifle Handling
  • Storytelling
  • Hosting and Hospitality

The competition will culminate in an awards ceremony, where the outstanding guide will be recognised for their exceptional skills and dedication to the field.

Competing this year are Cameron Schmidt from Pumba Private Game Reserve, Jason Gipson from Lion Sands Game Reserve, Kalie Otimile representing Tswalu Kalahari Reserve, Matthew Derry of Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, as well as Megan Heramb-Smith, a freelance Guide and Partner at The Great Outdoors.

To be eligible, the nominees were required to have a minimum of five years’ guiding experience, hold specific qualifications, and be FGASA members. A rigorous selection process, involving interviews and evaluations, narrowed the field to the top five finalists. A panel of experienced judges, including Karantonis, du Plessis, and other industry experts, will evaluate the finalists during the event.

“The competition is more than just an award; it’s a celebration of the hard work and commitment that field guides bring to their craft. These guides deliver exceptional safari experiences, enhancing South Africa’s global appeal, driving return tourism, and supporting job creation and skills development,” explains Karantonis.

With an aim to elevate the standards and profile of field guiding in Southern Africa, SGOTY Awards is set to highlight the importance of exceptional guiding in promoting conservation, tourism, and cultural exchange.

Huawei deepens partnership with the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, establishing ICT Academy support centre

Huawei deepens partnership with the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, establishing ICT Academy support centre
Charles Cheng, Deputy CEO of Huawei South Africa, Professor Tembisa Ngqondi, Dean of the Faculty of Informatics and Design at CPUT and Dr. Waldon Hendricks title, he is IT Lecturer and ICT Academy Coordinator at CPUT

Huawei has significantly deepened its partnership with the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), elevating the institution to an ICT Academy Support Center (IASC). This pivotal step, formalised through a new memorandum of understanding, not only enhances the existing bond established in 2019 but also promises to accelerate the development of local ICT talent, expand resources, and empower students with industry-leading skills crucial for the digital economy.

Beyond uplifting individual careers, these partnerships help to bridge the digital divide by providing access to relevant skills and technologies, especially in underserved communities. In doing so, such initiatives bring more people into the growing digital economy.

Charles Cheng, Deputy CEO of Huawei South Africa, delivered the keynote address at the event and said, “The signing of this MoU is a meaningful step on our shared mission to empower the next generation of ICT professionals.” The company has an array of initiatives to help bridge skills gaps between academic learning and what modern businesses are looking for when hiring.

Chen added that “CPUT has demonstrated remarkable leadership within these initiatives and today we are proud to recognise this dedication by recognising the university as an ICT Academy support centre.”

Huawei’s ICT Academy programme has enrolled 81 academic institutions across the country, training more than 6,000 lecturers and students.

Professor Tembisa Ngqondi, Dean of the Faculty of Informatics and Design at CPUT, spoke with great pride about the impact this partnership has brought to their students. Not only have CPUT students entered Huawei ICT competitions that have led to global exposure, but they have also greatly benefited from the networking opportunities and soft skills development that result from enrolling in the ICT academy. “Being a part of the academy and its programmes, our students have been given employment immediately due to the level of skills they now possess,” said Prof Ngqondi, adding that “they are highly regarded by companies where we place them.”

Prof Ngqondi shared her hopes for the future of the longstanding relationship between Huawei and CPUT: “We hope our collaboration will reach a point where we produce solutions through joint research.”

Developing employable ICT professionals

Surveys from the Institute of IT Professionals of South Africa (IITPSA) have found that almost half of ICT organisations in the country are looking for candidates skilled in fields like information security, and close to a third of organisations need people with artificial intelligence and machine learning skills. In 2024 alone, 42 ICT-academy certified students were employed by Huawei and its partners; in fact, graduates from the ICT academy programmes have an employment rate of 85.7%.

This means learners are prepared to actively contribute to the digital economy rather than just be consumers.

In closing, this agreement marks a pivotal moment, ushering in a new era of advanced digital training, significantly expanded employment opportunities, and substantial ICT sector growth for CPUT and local universities. This strategic collaboration with Huawei ensures that graduates will emerge not only with cutting-edge technical skills but also as highly competitive and sought-after professionals, driving the digital transformation of South Africa.

How To Beat Winter Dryness with Lamelle

How To Beat Winter Dryness with Lamelle

A nice glass of red by the fire. Snuggling in bed with a book. There is a lot to love about winter. Alas, as the temperatures drop, so does the humidity level. Then, the dry, winter air tries to even the status quo by drawing moisture from whatever it can, including you! This is why your skin feels so much drier in winter. It’s definitely not all in your head. It’s just science.

To make things worse, many of us tend to take longer, much hotter showers or baths during the chillier months. Again, this isn’t good news for your skin because these can cause the type of inflammation that disrupts your skin’s barrier function, the uppermost layers that essentially help you trap hydration. Happily, Lamelle has everything you need to help you beat winter dryness.

Prep and prime

To start, let’s make a clever swap regarding your cleanser. If you’re using something that contains a high concentration of foaming agents such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) it can be too “strippy” and only serve to dry you out further. Instead, switch to a no or very low SLS formula. Good examples of the latter would be our Serra Cleansing GelNourish Daily Cleanse, or Dermaheal Foaming Cleanser. Better yet, they’re all enriched with powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients.

Next up, you’ll want to know about our Skin Essence Rejuvenate fluid, to be worn under your moisturiser. It’s packed with probiotic lysates that improve the health of your cells to help your skin hold onto more moisture and have a better response to any other active ingredients you apply.

Another way to bump up your hydration levels – even before you’ve applied your daily moisturiser – is via our bestselling Corrective HA+ Serum. It’s made with four types of mega-plumping hyaluronic acid (HA), a molecule that occurs naturally in your skin with the ability to attract up to 1000 times its weight in water. It also contains HAFi fragments that stimulate your skin’s own hyaluronic acid production.

Moisturise cleverly

So, that’s your pre-game sorted. But what about the main event? While your current moisturiser may or may not be up to the task of helping you beat winter dryness, our Serra Restore Cream is! It contains cutting-edge ingredients that mimic the lipids in your skin’s bilayer, including our one-of-a-kind ceramide, Ceramide-P. Ultimately, it’s the best way to repair a busted barrier function situation because you’re not just adding hydration – it’s helping you seal it in. This way, you won’t lose your newfound moisture soon after you apply it.

Another way to winter-proof your skin is by using our indulgent, creamy-textured Serra Lipid Recovery Mask. Again, it contains Ceramide-P but also has extra water-binding ingredients to help you beat winter dryness in the most pampering way possible. Use it for just 15 minutes up to three times a week or slather it on and go to bed with it when you’re feeling extra dry. Either way, it’s the more indulgent way to nourish your skin. This way, you can enjoy all the best bits about winter, without having to worry about the cold air drying out your skin. So pour that big glass of red and let the chilly season fun begin!

Uni-Span: Precision engineering addresses Joburg water crisis

Uni-Span: Precision engineering addresses Joburg water crisis
Uni-span Kempton Park

As water demand continues to put a strain on infrastructure in Gauteng’s urban areas, the residents of Kempton Park and Brixton (and surrounding areas) will experience some relief as two new water towers are nearing completion. These developments represent critical milestones in South Africa’s broader Strategic Integrated Projects in energy, water and sanitation, transport as well as digital communications infrastructure.

The new Kempton Park tower, located on the western edge of the City of Ekurhuleni that is chronically affected by high water demand and shortages, is a 43-metre-high conical structure. The tower can store up to 2.5 megalitres of water, alleviating high demand in an area. In Brixton, a similar but slanted wall is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, also adding much needed capacity in a water stressed region of the City of Johannesburg.

Central to the development of these builds was Uni-Span, which has for over 36 years built a rich heritage of providing the unseen framework holding together some of the most important public assets – from bridges, water reservoirs and power plants – across Africa.

Uni-span Kempton Park

Both towers demanded complex temporary works design, with high load-bearing capacities, circular geometry, vertical climbing systems, and preventative measures to avoid deformations or collapses, even in extreme weather.

On the Kempton Park Water Tower, Uni-span provided critical formwork support to MLK Engineering and Construction.

“A water tower takes around 18 months to complete and is one of the most intricate structures a contractor can supply, even more so than a bridge,” says John Damant, CEO Uni-span. “While similar, these two projects called for meticulous design and a high degree of preparation and onsite support.”

As a sub-contractor, Uni-span was responsible for designing all the formwork and scaffolding based on the contracting engineers’ drawings.

This amounted to supplying hundreds of tonnes of formwork material, which included a complete scaffolding solution for large scale civil works and strong, durable and versatile timber support tailored for complex civil applications.

The designs had to ensure safe, efficient and reliable support, so the towers could be built on time, on budget and robustly, so they can last for generations to come.

Gideon Lesia from Mapitsi Civil Works, which led the Brixton project, emphasised that the water tower infrastructure will make a significant difference to the existing water supply system in surrounding Johannesburg suburbs.

“It’s a project that positively contributes to addressing the area’s water infrastructure challenges and supports the broader community. Working with Uni-span as our formwork subcontractor was a seamless experience. Their designs were clear and professional, and the logistics around material delivery were efficient and hassle-free. They proved to be a reliable partner,” he says.

Uni-span Kempton Park

Both projects underscore the vital role that expert engineering and quality formwork play in delivering infrastructure that not only meets immediate needs but also supports long-term community development.

“As the economy grows and investment into infrastructure continues, one cannot overstate the importance of structural integrity in every project, big and small,” Damant says. “Our formwork, but most importantly our expert engineers, are critical in ensuring stability as these compounded structures are painstakingly put together. From the start of each project, our engineers are present on site to ensure correct assembly and maintenance of each part of the formwork, a commitment I believe sets us apart.”

Streaming season is here – and LG has a new plan to get you comfortable without compromise

Streaming season is here – and LG has a new plan to get you comfortable without compromise

As winter draws in and South Africans retreat from the chill, our screens become more than just entertainment portals – they’re the hearths of our modern homes. LG Streaming Week is tapping into this seasonal shift, encouraging families, couples and solo streamers alike to create cosy sanctuaries with next-generation OLED displays, immersive audio, and curated streaming experiences.

This isn’t just about upgrading your tech – it’s about upgrading your downtime.

Your lounge, reimagined

Winter rituals have evolved. Where once the fireplace was the centrepiece, now it’s the TV – and LG’s OLED and QNED TVs are designed to be worthy of that spotlight. From their ultra-deep blacks to the vibrant lifelike colours enabled by Dolby Vision, these displays do more than just show your favourite content – they breathe life into it.

What sets them apart is how they adapt to your environment. LG Brightness Control technology analyses ambient light in real time to automatically adjust the screen – ensuring crisp, visible detail even on gloomy, sunless days. It’s a subtle feature with major impact, especially in South African homes where natural light can vary widely between morning and night.

Sound that wraps around you

Of course, cinematic visuals deserve cinematic audio. LG’s soundbars, powered by Dolby Atmos and Triple Level Spatial Sound, offer a three-dimensional soundscape that puts you at the heart of the action. This isn’t just surround sound – it’s atmospheric immersion. You don’t just hear the rain fall in your favourite noir drama; you feel the tension it carries.

AI Room Calibration means the system adjusts itself to your space, ensuring the sound is optimised whether you live in a compact apartment or a large open-plan home. And for streaming concerts or K-dramas with rich soundtracks? It’s the kind of indulgence that makes staying in feel like going out.

Platforms that surprise and delight

Where LG’s offering really becomes distinct is in the content partnerships it brings to your fingertips. While Netflix and Apple TV+ are already household names, LG smart TVs also unlock lesser-known gems that cater to niche interests with premium content.

  • MUBI: A haven for arthouse film lovers, showcasing carefully curated global cinema. With LG, users can enjoy an exclusive 60-day trial.
  • Stage+: Transport yourself to the world’s grandest concert halls with a library of operas and classical performances.
  • Stingray: Ideal for music video marathons, ambient backdrops for entertaining, and karaoke nights at home.
  • iQIYI & Viu: K-drama and Asian thriller fans can access a treasure trove of gripping series and anime, with easy navigation and subtitles built into LG’s WebOS.
  • Baby Shark World for Kids: Keep the little ones happy with singalongs, educational content and classic fairy tales – a lifesaver on long, cold weekends.

These are not afterthoughts – they’re integral to the LG streaming ecosystem, designed to surprise, inspire, and keep every member of the household entertained.

Designed for how South Africans really live

Streaming culture in South Africa isn’t just about bingeing. It’s about balancing power outages, managing household dynamics, and finding small luxuries amid busy days. LG’s smart interface, WebOS, as well as AI-features, enhance this experience by learning your habits – suggesting content when you need it most, and cutting down time spent browsing.

During LG Streaming Week, these lifestyle touches come together with compelling offers, platform trials, and bundled upgrades that elevate the everyday.

Because the real magic of modern home entertainment isn’t in just watching content – it’s in how that content transforms your space, your mood, and your time spent together.

SIDEBARS:

What exactly is QNED?

Think of QNED as a cutting-edge blend of quantum dots and NanoCells – two light-enhancing technologies that work together to create stunning colour accuracy and contrast. While traditional LED TVs use white backlights, QNED TVs harness quantum dots to produce purer reds, greens, and blues. Then, LG’s NanoCell tech filters out dull tones for a crisper image. The result? Deeper blacks, brighter brights, and vibrancy that doesn’t wash out – even in daylight.

Dolby Atmos: Why your ceiling matters more than you think

If you’ve ever felt the swoosh of a superhero flying overhead or the hum of rain falling above your head, you’re already familiar with the magic of Dolby Atmos. Unlike conventional surround sound – which moves audio side-to-side – Atmos adds height to your sound field. It maps sounds in three dimensions, bouncing them off your walls and ceiling to create the illusion of being inside the scene. LG soundbars with Dolby Atmos don’t just play sound – they place it. It’s like swapping flat sheet music for a 3D orchestra.

Kenya Tourism Board Launches ‘A Journey Through the Wild Heart of East Africa’ Campaign

Kenya Tourism Board Launches 'A Journey Through the Wild Heart of East Africa' Campaign

The Kenya Tourism Board today announced A Journey Through the Wild Heart of East Africa, a multimedia branded campaign created for them by BBC StoryWorks Commercial Productions, that follows seasoned travel photographer and adventurer Jack Swynnerton on a stunning journey capturing the country’s dramatic landscapes and incredible wildlife.

In this new campaign, which launches today [Tuesday 20th May] across online and social media, Swynnerton enjoys a once-in-a-lifetime experience as he discovers the true spirit of adventure in Kenya, documenting his journey in a photography essay and travel guide split into three chapters – LandWater and Air.

On land, his adventure begins at the heart of Kenya’s wild frontier as he walks the plains of the Maasai Mara. Crossing the rugged landscapes of the savannah, he showcases Kenya’s world-famous wildlife, getting up close and personal with a pride of lions, and discovers the warm hospitality and cultural richness of the local Samburu community.

From there, we take to the skies and embark on a hot air balloon safari above the Maasai Mara at dawn, offering an unparalleled view of the wild, before taking a flight in a light aircraft to a remote elephant sanctuary and hiking off-grid up the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya, experiencing moments of stillness on Africa’s second highest mountain.

Finally, we dive into Kenya’s hidden coastal and aquatic gems. In Watamu on the Swahili coast, our guide paddleboards through tangled mangrove forests, kitesurfs along the turquoise waves of the Indian Ocean and heads out to sea on a traditional dhow sailing boat.

June Chepkemei, CEO Kenya Tourism Board (KTB), said: “This campaign marks a pivotal moment in our efforts to diversify Kenya’s tourism offerings beyond the traditional experience. By highlighting the rich tapestry of adventure activities from mountain trekking and aerial safaris to coastal exploration, we are positioning Kenya as an excellent destination for thrill-seekers and nature lovers alike. ‘A Journey Through the Wild Heart of East Africa’ highlights the immense potential of adventure tourism and reinforces our commitment to offering visitors a dynamic and unforgettable travel experience.”

Jihane RassasseVP of Content Partnerships for MEA, Turkey and the Mediterranean, BBC Studios, said: “This thrilling journey across Kenya and the stunning visual storytelling of Jack Swynnerton provides the perfect lens through which to explore adventure tourism in the country. From spotting elephants on safari to marvelling at mountain views, we’ve showcased some amazing experiences which will offer audiences around the world a taste of just what an adventure in Kenya can offer.”

A Journey Through the Wild Heart of East Africa launches today across a range of innovative digital formats on BBC.com. Swynnerton’s visual storytelling is also available to view as branded content across social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram and TikTok through photography reels, behind-the scenes footage and more.

To create the campaign, BBC StoryWorks Commercial Productions leveraged BBC Studios’ world-renowned creative and production capabilities that are behind some of the most beloved storytelling on the planet.

BBC Studios, the commercial arm of the BBC, relaunched BBC.com and the BBC app last year, transforming the way audiences read, watch and find the BBC’s journalism and storytelling outside of the UK. Since relaunching, BBC.com has seen double-digit year-on-year growth for nine consecutive months, with audiences in Kenya increasing by 10 per cent in the first year. Today, BBC.com reaches 130 million visitors globally.

Opera launches Data Dance campaign to tackle high data costs in South Africa, offering five years worth of airtime to the lucky winner

Opera launches Data Dance campaign to tackle high data costs in South Africa, offering five years worth of airtime to the lucky winner

Opera Mini has launched Data Dance – a national campaign focused on data affordability and digital access for South African youth. Bringing South Africa’s dance culture online, Opera invites users to post their dance routine on TikTok under the #operaminidatadance hashtag and win up to five years worth of airtime**.

High data cost leading to real-life difficulties for the youth

According to a recent nationwide survey commissioned by Opera, 62%* of respondents aged 16 to 35 believe that the internet in South Africa is too expensive. Over 86% say that affordable access to the internet could significantly change their lives, with many pointing to education, job opportunities, and access to information as key areas of impact.

Among young users, data constraints are a daily reality. 63% of the respondents said they run out of data at least every other month, while 31% report that it happens every month. As a result, 68% of participants said they feel frustrated, with others citing feelings of disconnection and exclusion. 17% have to stop browsing altogether when they run out of data.

The Opera Mini browser, known for helping users stretch their data through its built-in compression technology and ad blocking, is now offering long-term data support in the form of a social challenge that brings digital opportunity and cultural energy together.

How to join #operaminidatadance

To take part in the campaign, South Africans can record a short dance video using a custom amapiano track which you can find on TikTok’s sounds under the “Opera Mini Data Dance” name. Opera Mini teamed up with African artists to produce an original amapiano track, now available on TikTok for users to dance to and submit their entries. To win airtime, participants should upload their videos to TikTok using the #operaminidatadance hashtag and Opera’s own “Opera Mini Data Dance” amapiano track. The most creative submissions will win up to five years’ worth of airtime—with additional prizes offering three years and six months worth of airtime. The campaign starts on May 22nd and will run for four weeks.

Bridging digital divide in South Africa

The Opera Mini browser is designed for users who need to stretch their limited data packages. Its built-in unique data compression technology reduces webpage size and load times, helping users browse up to 10x longer on the same data package. The browser also offers an Extreme Data Saving mode, blocking ads and limiting image quality to further conserve usage.

Since 2020, Opera has provided millions of gigabytes of airtime in South Africa through its free data campaigns, and continues to invest in ways to support users through both technology and partnerships. Users on MTN can claim 3GB of free monthly data simply by browsing with Opera Mini.

This campaign is the latest step in Opera Mini’s commitment to making mobile internet not just more affordable—but more inclusive, engaging, and relevant to the local culture.

Africa Day on the plate! Town Lodge Roodepoort celebrates Seven Colours Sunday tradition

Africa Day on the plate! Town Lodge Roodepoort celebrates Seven Colours Sunday tradition
MR Chicken livers

At Town Lodge Roodepoort, part of City Lodge Hotels, management and staff love surprising regular guests with traditional African meals that transport them home. It’s a nostalgic treat; a comforting reminder of family, flavour, and togetherness.

With Africa Day coming up on Sunday, 25 May, what better way to celebrate the spirit of ubuntu and the incredible talent of our hotel team than by showcasing their take on a traditional Seven Colours Sunday lunch. This flavourful South African tradition celebrates family and community through a colourful spread of meats, vegetables, and starches, with each dish reflecting regional variations of age-old recipes passed down through generations. We’ve captured some of the flavours, joy, and meaning that are especially close to the hearts of the Town Lodge Umhlanga team.

“When we prepare these dishes as a special treat for our regular guests, they absolutely love it,” says General Manager Roslyn Khumalo. “It’s a taste of home, which means a lot when you’re away and travelling. As good as our Eat-in menu is, there’s something uniquely comforting about being served a traditional, homecooked dish. It also strengthens our guests’ connection with the hotel.”

Junior Assistant General Manager Mpho Magampa agrees, adding: “We call this hotel our guests’ home away from home and now they get to taste it too – nostalgia at its best!”

MR Cow heels

As a gesture of appreciation for the team, Roslyn and her kitchen team prepared a truly African staff lunch, featuring authentic homemade dishes. Chef de Partie Andrew Machaba says all ingredients are easily sourced from the hotel’s regular suppliers. They created:

  • Tripe: Mogodu (Sesotho) – Cow or sheep stomach and intestines, slow-cooked and seasoned with salt and Rajah Mild & Spicy.
  • Chicken Livers: Seasoned with Cajun spice and chicken stock and quick-fried.
  • Cow Heels: Amanqina (isiXhosa) – Slow-boiled with onions, garlic, tomatoes, chillis, beef stock, turmeric, Worcester sauce, black pepper, salt and Rajah Mild.
  • Chicken Gizzards: Izingingila (isiZulu) – Flavoured with chicken and Cajun spices and basted in Prego sauce, served “streetwise-style” on skewers.
  • Snapper Rock Fish: Oven-baked whole with a lemon, fish rub, onion, tomatoes, and wholegrain mustard stuffing
  • Beans: Amabontshisi (isiZulu) – Boiled with chopped onions, tomato sauce, and vegetable seasoning.
  • Cabbage: Ikhabishi (isiZulu) – Chopped and fried with onions, garlic, green peppers, curry powder, and Aromat.
  • Squash: Steamed in salted water with butter; apple slices added for a sweet note.
  • A range of traditional sides completes the meal, including amagwinya (vetkoek), dombolo (steamed bread), spicy chakalaka, and salads in summer.
MR L-R Mpho, Andrew, Nosipho

“These recipes were learned at home, passed down from parents, aunts and grandparents. We saw our elders prepare these dishes, and now our children are growing up with them too,” says Mpho. “We add our own touches, but the key ingredients remain: simple, cost-effective staples with lots of heart.”

“The great thing about these meals is they’re affordable, easy to make, and full of flavour.
