Kota enthusiasts and food lovers were in for a treat at the recent Jozi Kota Festival, held at Old Park Station in Newtown on the vibrant Saturday of 30 September 2023. The event was abuzz with the aromatic fusion of South African flavors, as Kota lovers gathered to indulge in some of the finest kotas Gauteng had to offer. A special highlight of the festival was the unveiling of the “Best Jozi Kota Stall” challenge by Makhamisa Foods, aimed at celebrating the art of crafting a perfect Kota while showcasing the delectable and versatile relish provided by Makhamisa Foods.

The “Best Jozi Kota Stall” challenge was a platform designed to honor the ingenious fusion of flavors that make up the beloved Kota. All registered kota vendors at the Jozi Kota Festival were automatically eligible to participate in this exciting competition. The competition sought to judge and celebrate not only the taste but also the creativity, presentation, and innovative use of Makhamisa Foods in the preparation of the kotas.

A panel of esteemed judges, including Chef Mo from Mo’s Food and Pastries, City Lodge Hotel Newtown’s Chef Ayanda, and Brands Activator Precious Ndzekeni, were tasked with the delightful responsibility of tasting and evaluating the kota offerings from the participating stalls. Their evaluation criteria encompassed not only the flavors but also the creativity and presentation of the kotas.

After careful evaluation and deliberation, the winners were announced. The third-place winner was Zozo Kitchen (081), taking home a prize of R2000. The second-place winner was Dinga’s (115), receiving a prize of R3000. The first-place winner, crowned as the “Best Jozi Kota Stall,” was Kitchen Candits (018), awarded a prestigious prize of R5000. These talented vendors showcased not only exceptional taste but also displayed creativity and innovation in their use of Makhamisa Foods.
