Eye health tips for smartphone users

We spend hours on our smartphones every day because they make it easy to get things done, connect us to our loved phones, and keep us entertained. But staring at a smartphone display—or any device screen—for too long can lead to tired, itchy, dry eyes or headaches and blurred vision. TCL recommends some ways to look after your eye health and reduce these symptoms.

Here are some valuable tips to take great care of your eyes when using a mobile phone:

20-20 vision:

Take a 20-second break from looking at the screen every 20 minutes, focusing on something 6 metres away. This practice helps reduce eye strain caused by prolonged screen time.

Adjust the brightness of your display:

Make sure your smartphone screen is neither too bright nor too dim. Adjust the brightness to match the surrounding lighting conditions. You can use the “night mode” feature at night to reduce your exposure to blue light.

Use larger text and enable zoom:

You can make the font bigger, adjust the contrast and use the zoom feature, so you don’t need to squint or hold your phone too close to your eyes.

Maintain a proper viewing distance: Try holding your smartphone 40 centimetres away from your eyes and avoid holding it too close for extended periods.

Blink:

Blinking moistens your eyes, reducing dry eye symptoms.

Use an anti-glare screen protector:

Anti-glare screen protectors can help reduce reflections and glare from bright lights or the sun, making it easier on your eyes.

Take regular breaks:

Set reminders to take breaks from your smartphone, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Use these breaks to stretch, relax your eyes, and do some eye exercises.

Get your eyes checked regularly:

Regular eye exams help keep your eye health in check and ensure that any vision problems or eye conditions are detected early. If you experience frequent eye discomfort or vision problems, consult an optometrist for professional advice.
