Spearheading e-commerce growth in South Africa

It is estimated that by 2025, there will be 33.4 million e-commerce users in South Africa, with an e-commerce penetration rate of 53.1%, making it potentially the largest e-commerce market in Africa¹. Google Trends has revealed a 9900% increase in South African interest in Temu within just three months. To meet this surging consumer demand, Temu has partnered with South Africa’s largest independently owned last-mile courier service providers, Fastway Couriers.

‘We estimate that if Temu continues its growth trajectory, we will see a 300% increase in Temu delivery volumes by the end of the year,’ says Damian Velayadum, Group Financial Director at Fastway Couriers.

Temu, an online megastore owned by the Chinese e-commerce giant Pinduoduo, has emerged as a frontrunner in an already competitive e-commerce market.

Temu has a presence in 55 countries and regions, including the United Kingdom, Italy, Australia, and prominent cities like New York and Berlin. The platform has quickly captured the attention of the modern man seeking good products at competitive prices. In fact, statistics show that the majority (55%) of visitors are men while 45% are women¹. A gateway to a world of style, convenience, and affordability, Temu offers a diverse range of products spanning fashion, grooming essentials, cosmetics technologies, lifestyle accessories, and more.

Item prices on Temu are constantly fluctuating. However, if an item’s price decreases after your purchase, you can request a price adjustment. The difference will then be available on your account as a ‘Temu credit’.

Addressing ethical concerns, Temu ensures compliance with its Third-Party Code of Conduct, stressing that the company has a zero-tolerance policy for vendors that use forced labour to manufacture products. It mandates vendors to adhere to local wage and hour laws while maintaining safe and non-abusive working conditions. Furthermore, giving peace of mind particularly concerning clothes, shoes, electronics and tech gadgets, for example, Temu’s Purchase Protection Program safeguards against issues such as items differing from their online listings, arriving damaged, or failing to arrive altogether, offering customers a full refund within 90 days of purchase.
