End-to-end e-commerce brings greater ease, trust and transparency to mobile postpaid journeys

End-to-end e-commerce journey for mobile postpaid customers

As more South Africans turn to digital channels for everyday transactions, expectations around convenience, speed and security continue to rise. In the telecommunications sector, that shift is placing greater focus on how providers simplify complex customer journeys such as signing up for a mobile contract.

Against this backdrop, Telkom has enhanced its website for its mobile postpaid offering, enabling new customers to complete the full journey online without human intervention. This enhancement marks an important step in the company’s broader digital transformation journey and reflects a growing move towards more seamless, self-service digital experiences.

The capability has been designed to move beyond a digital experience that simply mirrors an in-store or agent-assisted process. Instead, it creates a more integrated online journey that automates key stages of the transaction. For customers, the benefits are practical and immediate: a streamlined application process, fewer delays caused by manual checks, and greater convenience in completing a transaction from start to finish in one place. This is particularly relevant for customers who increasingly want the flexibility to shop and transact on their own terms, at a time and place that suits them.

A central focus of the new journey is trust. Many customers remain hesitant to complete mobile contract applications online because of concerns around identity security, unclear verification steps, or uncertainty about what happens after a purchase is submitted. To address these concerns, the capability introduces enhanced identity verification through facial recognition, real-time account and deposit validation processes, and integrated e-signature functionality. Together, these features are designed to offer stronger reassurance while reducing friction during onboarding.

Another key enhancement is end-to-end order tracking, which gives customers visibility into their order status from dispatch to delivery. In practical terms, this means greater transparency, fewer unknowns and a clearer sense of control throughout the fulfilment process. In an increasingly competitive digital marketplace, this visibility makes a meaningful difference to the overall customer experience and helps to build confidence in digital transactions.

From a commercial perspective, the capability also targets a longstanding challenge in online journeys: checkout drop-off. Where customers encounter lengthy forms, uncertain verification steps or a lack of confidence in the process, they are more likely to abandon the journey or request support instead of completing the purchase online. By reducing these friction points and automating more of the journey, the new e-commerce capability is expected to improve completion rates while creating a smoother, more customer-friendly digital experience.

The initiative is driven from the CSB IT front, where the team, led by Dr. Noxolo Kubheka-Dlamini, Telkom Consumer and Small Business, Chief Digital and IT officer has worked with its technology partner to unlock fundamental BSS capabilities and efficiencies to enable a true end-to-end digital journey. Working with Amdocs as Telkom’s IT vendor on this programme has helped deliver the underlying architecture required to support current functionality and future MVPs, including additional customer segments and product configurations.

“This launch reflects a deliberate effort to make digital engagement simpler, more secure and more responsive to customer needs,” says Dr. Noxolo Kubheka-Dlamini. . “By combining an intuitive online journey with robust identity and order tracking capabilities, we’re building greater trust in digital channels and giving customers the confidence to complete their mobile postpaid journeys entirely online, on their own terms.”

To support the launch and ongoing customer education, Telkom has introduced a series of brand-led and technical videos that bring the new journey to life. The brand films highlight the ease and flexibility of signing up for a mobile postpaid contract online, while the technical videos walk customers through key steps such as identity verification, deposit payment and order tracking in a simple, accessible way. These assets are available on Telkom’s official YouTube channels and are being featured across owned, paid and social platforms as part of the broader awareness and education campaign.

For now, this online journey is available to new customers on selected mobile postpaid plans. In future, Telkom plans to extend it to more deals and to existing customers, including those renewing or upgrading their contracts.

As more customers choose to do things online, solutions like this are raising expectations for digital services. The goal is to move beyond basic websites and build secure, easy-to-use online experiences that customers can trust to complete important tasks from start to finish.
