Durban – 14 February 2026. After drawing crowds in Pretoria, the Unbreakable HONOR X9d challenge came to Pavilion Mall, bringing the same crowd-pulling energy that has been turning heads across the country. From 10am to 2pm this afternoon, the Pavilion Main Court near the fountain transformed into a live arena where everyday shoppers could see what the HONOR X9d is really made of, up close and in real time.

Built around HONOR’s now well-known Unbreakable Series, the takeover invited shoppers to step up rather than stand back. Anyone confident enough to answer questions from the MC, Penny Ntuli, earned the chance to take on three headline challenges. Participants used the HONOR X9d to crush rusks and crack walnuts, putting its durability to the test in front of the live crowd. The final round, the Fish Tank challenge, raised the pressure. Contestants had to unlock a submerged tank to retrieve the device, reinforcing the same strength that previously earned global recognition by getting the Guinness World Record award for strength and resilience by surviving an intact drop from 6.133 metres. In a country that understands resilience, the Unbreakable challenge feels less like a gimmick and more like a statement.
Beyond the spectacle, the HONOR X9d has built its name on delivering peace of mind without pushing itself out of reach. Its 3-day long-lasting battery keeps pace with full days out at the mall, long commutes and busy weekends, while reliable performance ensures everything runs smoothly under pressure. The capable camera system adds another layer, capturing sharp photos and steady video so moments from the day can be shared instantly. Tough on the outside, smart on the inside, and priced with accessibility in mind, the device brings together durability, performance and value in one dependable package.
The Pavilion lineup brought familiar names and serious energy to the floor. DJ Tira led with the home-ground presence, joined by Penny Ntuli, Lindough and the Qwabe Twins, who added music and personality throughout the day. Regular shoppers formed the heart of the experience, with prizes being up for grabs.
Rather than a once-off stop, the Durban activation forms part of HONOR’s broader regional tour following another successful takeover, which was held in Menlyn 2 weeks ago. Reflecting on the brand’s approach, Fred Zhou, CEO of HONOR South Africa, said: “The Unbreakable Series is about more than durability. It is about creating moments where people can experience our technology for themselves. We have seen incredible reactions today, and we were excited to experience how Durban responded when the challenge arrived at Pavilion Mall. Our focus remains on delivering reliable, high-quality devices that offer real value and accessibility to South Africans.”
With the crowds having had their expectations met, the Unbreakable challenge will continue to capture attention across Mzansi.
