Spotify Meets Users at Their Point of Need with New Flash Payment System, Celebrating Local Artists in Their Communities

Spotify is transforming how music lovers access their favourite tracks with the introduction of a new payment method that directly serves communities across South Africa. In partnership with Flash, a leading Payment Service Provider (PSP) in South Africa, Spotify is extending its reach to townships and urban centres, making it easier for users to subscribe to Spotify Premium where they live.

This initiative aims to raise awareness and accessibility of Spotify Premium by utilising Flash’s vast network of mobile vending machines in local “spaza” shops – the community corner shops at the heart of South Africa’s townships. This payment solution is designed for consumers who may not have access to traditional credit or debit cards, ensuring that a wider audience can enjoy the benefits of Premium.

Celebrating Artists in Their Neighbourhoods

In addition to expanding payment options, Spotify is honouring the communities it’s connecting with by celebrating local talent. As part of the rollout, Spotify is spotlighting artists featured on its top local playlist, Amapiano Grooves, by recognising them in their hometowns. These neighbourhood-focused celebrations will allow fans to engage with their favourite artists and playlists in a more personal way, fostering a deeper connection to the music that defines their communities.

This approach not only supports users by offering more accessible payment solutions, but also highlights Spotify’s commitment to uplifting local artists, ensuring that their talent is celebrated in the places that shaped them.

Why It Matters

South Africa remains one of the most dynamic music markets in Sub-Saharan Africa, and by embracing alternative payment methods like Flash, Spotify is addressing the needs of a broader audience. With nearly half of the urban population residing in townships, this initiative is vital in reinforcing its dedication to inclusivity and as well as supporting local talent.

With plans starting at just R66 per month, users can now stream their favourite playlists ad-free and offline, while connecting with the music that resonates deeply within their own communities.
