In a country where most young people face the reality of unemployment, rising debt and limited access to financial knowledge, Lucha Lunako is shifting the narrative.
A hybrid social enterprise dedicated to youth development, Lucha Lunako designs evidence-based programmes that help young people unlock their potential and take ownership of their futures. Their flagship financial education programme, Foundations for Financial Freedom (FF), is proving to be one of the most impactful interventions of its kind, offering young people a mindset shift in how they think about money, rather than simply advice on how to budget.

Developed by financial educator and course designer Themba Skosana and rooted in behavioural science, the FF programme goes beyond budgeting and number-crunching. It helps young people understand the emotional ties, money beliefs and everyday influences that shape financial decisions. As Skosana emphasises, “Finances play a role in every part of your life – and lasting change starts with how you think.” This approach is critical in South Africa, where 63% of disposable household income goes toward debt repayments and where young adults are often navigating credit traps, peer pressure and low savings culture.
The Foundations for Financial Freedom course is delivered over eight weeks – an intentional learning design that allows for reflection, repetition and real behavioural change. Participants learn how to manage spending leaks, build healthy habits, resist predatory credit, and transform debt into savings. By the end of the programme, students at Life Choices in Cape Town recorded powerful improvements: 87.5% now avoid credit, 84% became debt-free, 82.5% gained control over their spending, and 87% actively use their spending plan to make important decisions.
The lived experiences behind these numbers are even more compelling. One student shared: “Mostly my mindset changed. I learned you must sacrifice a little now for the freedom you want later in life.” Another realised they had been spending R400 per month on energy drinks and shifted that money straight into savings. For some, it was the first time they had ever been asked to reflect on their values, needs versus wants, or long-term goals. Another learner reflected: “If we weren’t taught in a safe space like this, life would’ve taught us the hard way.”
FF is proving effective not only for students and emerging professionals, but also for young employees, NEET youth, interns, YES participants, small-scale entrepreneurs and those entering the workforce for the first time. Its impact extends beyond individuals to their households, families and communities, creating a wider ripple of behaviour change. In case studies, participants described paying off long-standing high-interest debts, closing credit accounts, starting emergency funds, shifting family norms and modelling healthier money habits for their children.
For Lucha Lunako co-founder Michelle Green, the goal is long-term empowerment. “Our work focuses on the big gaps in financial literacy and the emotional realities behind them. Once young people understand their relationship with money, they can start making decisions that align with the future they want,” she explains.
The Foundations for Financial Freedom programme is well suited to youth organisations, corporates with young workforces, graduate programmes, sector bodies, bursary funds, non-profits, municipalities and faith-based organisations. By integrating it into learnerships, internships or YES Youth placements, businesses can strengthen financial wellbeing, contribute to B-BBEE skills development and support broader socio-economic mobility – all while helping shape a generation that is confident, informed and financially resilient.
Financial freedom is not about the size of your salary, but the strength of your habits and mindset. And when young people understand that wealth can be built, not inherited, they unlock choices that shape their entire future.
