The Bank of Namibia (BoN) officially launched a redesigned N$50 banknote in Windhoek on May 12, 2025. Governor Johannes ǃGawaxab unveiled the new green note, which continues to depict Captain Hendrik Witbooi, as part of the central bank’s currency upgrade programme. The N$50 banknote was first introduced in 2016 to honor Namibian heroes, particularly Captain Witbooi.
The issuance is part of a multi-year series refreshing the Nanibian banknotes. The BoN had already rolled out updated N$10, N$20, N$100, and N$200 notes in recent years, and the N$50 is the final denomination to receive the Governor’s signature and new features. According to BoN reports, the redesign is intended to enhance the durability, counterfeiting, and security of the banknote while maintaining public confidence in the currency.
Security Enhancements
The new N$50 note incorporates advanced security features and improved printing materials. The Bank of Namibia emphasizes that the redesign is part of efforts to “safeguard value” and deter counterfeiting. Notably, the central bank has reported a 10.7% decline in counterfeit notes in circulation, which officials attribute to strengthened security measures and public education campaigns.
The 2012 series of Namibian banknotes introduced enhanced anti-counterfeiting technologies, and the latest upgrades continue this trend. The N$50 note retains its traditional green color and features the portrait of Captain Hendrik Witbooi on the front, alongside the Parliament building in Windhoek. The reverse side displays the Namibian coat of arms and national wildlife, including kudu antelopes.
Captain Hendrik Witbooi
Captain Hendrik Witbooi (1830–1905) is a revered national hero who led armed resistance against German colonial rule at Hornkranz in 1893. He is honored as one of Namibia’s national heroes for his role in defending indigenous lands and sovereignty.
Namibia’s Founding President Sam Nujoma once praised Witbooi as “the first African leader who took up arms against the German imperialists and foreign occupiers in defence of our land.” His memory is immortalized at the Heroes’ Acre outside Windhoek and remains central to the country’s liberation narrative.
Witbooi’s portrait has long graced Namibian currency, appearing on various denominations including the N$50, N$100, and N$200 notes. The continued presence of his image on the redesigned note pays tribute to his enduring legacy.
The redesigned N$50 note is set to enter general circulation following its unveiling. Public outreach initiatives will help ensure widespread awareness of its features and authenticity. Citizens are encouraged to visit the Bank of Namibia’s official website to learn more about the bank’s currency reform efforts and view educational materials related to the new banknote series, and get familiarised with the new development.
