University of the Witwatersrand student Nandi Mbonani was thrilled to receive a R10 000 bursary from Fundi this week. A first-year Accounting Science student, Mbonani will use the money towards registration, giving her a critical hand-up at the start of this academic year.
Nandi was selected as the recipient of the bursary after being identified by the Lanseria Career Expo team from a cohort of promising learners who participated in the event held in July 2024. “The intention behind the bursary was to create an incentive to assist talented students to access higher education and alleviate some of the financial pressure associated with tertiary studies – especially at the start of the year,” explains Sphiwe Masuku, Fundi Head of Brand and Marketing.
Fundi’s support of the Lanseria Career Expo last year highlights its commitment to education and skills development in South Africa. “By sponsoring this event, we helped high school learners explore different career options and make informed choices about their futures,” notes Masuku.
The bursary was created to support a deserving student from one of the participating schools who passed grade 12 in 2024 and gained admission to an accredited institution for the 2025 academic year. The bursary could be used for any accredited course of study, making financial support more accessible beyond just aviation-related fields.
Mbonani was selected through a process of pure academic excellence
Receiving the bursary has been a life-changing moment for Mbonani, who is excited to start her studies at Wits.
“This bursary means so much to me and my family,” says Mbonani. “It not only eases the financial burden we were facing particularly at the start of this year, but has also motivated me to do my best. I am truly grateful to Fundi and the Lanseria Career Expo team for believing in me and investing in my future.”
Masuku, who met with Mbonani in person to present the cheque, shared Fundi’s purpose to support students like her and enable their academic success. “We know how difficult it can be for many students to afford higher education, and we are committed to making a difference. Supporting students like Mbonani means investing in South Africa’s future leaders. We’re excited to see her thrive and wish her all the best in her studies.”
