Durban isn’t South Africa’s only humid city – averaged across the year, Cape Town is on equal footing, and Gqeberha isn’t far behind. Humidity numbers don’t generally show up on a weather app outside Durban, because it isn’t about a single hot, sticky day – but humidity is still a constant that seeps into cupboards, wardrobes and the backs of furniture, long before anyone notices a problem.
LG Electronics South Africa has launched its first dedicated home dehumidifier range in the country, entering the air care category with two Dual Inverter models: a 28L and a 36L. Both are aimed squarely at the households that feel this most – coastal homes for most of the year, and inland ones through the wetter winter months.

The damage that arrives quietly
Persistent indoor dampness has been linked to mould and mildew growth, musty odours, and the slow deterioration of wooden furniture, clothing, footwear and electronics – with the National Library of Medicine’s own research on indoor dampness pointing to respiratory and allergic symptoms as a recurring concern in damp-affected homes. None of it announces itself, and a damp cupboard doesn’t smell different until the mildew is already established.
A compressor built to run all day
Both models use LG’s Dual Inverter Compressor, which adjusts its speed to the room’s actual humidity rather than switching on and off at full power. LG says this cuts both energy use and noise: the units run at 34dB, quiet enough for a bedroom or nursery, and are backed by a 10-year compressor warranty. The 28L model removes moisture at an equivalent of up to around 110 bottles of water a day (250ml bottled water); while the 36L is built for larger spaces needing more sustained extraction, in a footprint LG describes as one of the slimmest in its class.
Air care beyond moisture control
Both the 28L and 34L models add a sterilising ioniser and use UVnano UV-LED technology to keep internal fans clean – independently tested by TÜV Rheinland to remove 99.99% of bacteria such as E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Both connect to the LG ThinQ app, which tracks humidity remotely, sends a notification when the water bucket is full, and can even let the unit run continuously via a drain hose instead of manual emptying. Accessories for drying shoes and closets are included, along with caster wheels for moving the unit between rooms.
