The holiday homeowners’ checklist: Coastal care that keeps you secure these autumn holidays

For many South Africans, the Easter break, autumn school holidays and upcoming long weekends mean one thing, the coast is calling. From Durban to the Garden Route, thousands of families lock up their homes and head to the seaside for a well-deserved break. But as the holiday mood kicks in, few people stop to think about what the coastal climate is doing to their homes, especially their security barriers.

While sea breezes and salt air feel refreshing, they’re also the biggest culprits behind rust, corrosion, and premature damage to metal fixtures. From window shutters to retractable security gates, that invisible film of salt in the air slowly eats away at protective coatings, leaving homes, and holiday properties vulnerable long after the long weekend ends.

“The irony is that the very air we love at the coast is what quietly destroys our biggest investments,” says Damian Judge, Sales and Marketing Executive at Trellidor. “Without consistent maintenance, salt deposits can damage even the best-engineered aluminium and steel security products over time.”

The coastal effect: What you don’t see can hurt you

Sea air carries microscopic salt particles that settle on every surface, and once moisture hits, they react with metal. Even powder-coated or galvanised barriers can suffer if salt isn’t regularly washed off.

Judge explains: “Corrosion doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a slow, creeping process that starts with small surface marks and ends with weakened materials and discolouration. That’s why regular cleaning isn’t just cosmetic, it’s essential safety.”

If your coastal home has louvre shutters, retractable gates, or burglar bars, their longevity depends on how well they’re maintained. Trellidor recommends cleaning once a week for properties within 5kms of the sea, and once or twice a month for homes slightly further from the sea.

Keep warranties intact

With so many South Africans owning holiday homes or holiday rental properties near the coast, it’s easy to overlook the maintenance obligations tied to product warranties. Most leading home security brands, including Trellidor, outline specific care requirements in their warranty terms.

“We often find that homeowners aren’t aware that their warranty can become void if the recommended maintenance schedule isn’t followed,” says Judge. “A beautiful coastal view shouldn’t come at the cost of neglected upkeep. That is when you risk both your investment and your safety.”

Warranty compliance is especially critical ahead of the busy Easter break, autumn holidays and the cluster of public holiday long weekends. If a property will stand empty for a few days or a few weeks, it’s worth scheduling a professional inspection before you leave. Ensuring that locks, hinges, and coatings are in good shape can prevent unpleasant surprises when you return home.

Pre-holiday security and maintenance checklist

Before you pack for the holidays, make sure your coastal home is prepped for the season ahead. Whether you’re heading away for Easter, Freedom Day, Workers’ Day, the school holidays, or managing a holiday rental over the autumn break, a few simple checks can prevent costly damage and ensure your security barriers stay in top condition all year round.

1. Have all your barriers cleaned thoroughly
Use mild, salt-free cleaning agents and a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or dishwashing liquids, as they strip away protective coatings.

2. Lubricate moving parts
Apply a light protective spray to hinges, rollers, and joints (but never into locks). This keeps the system running smoothly and prevents friction damage.

3. Inspect for corrosion
Look for discolouration, bubbling paint, or rust spots — these are signs your barrier needs extra care.

4. Test all locks
Make sure keys fit smoothly and locking mechanisms engage properly. Replace missing or worn keys before the holiday rush.

Peace of mind for the holidays

While you’re preparing your coastal home for the autumn holiday period, it’s also a good time to review overall security for your main residence as well. Holiday breaks and long weekends are often peak times for opportunistic break-ins, with empty properties providing easy targets.

“Thieves know when people are away,” adds Judge. “The best defence is to make sure your visible security barriers are in top condition, acting as a deterrent for an attempted intrusion.”

South Africans love the coast for good reason, but the sea air that soothes the soul can be tough on our homes. A few minutes of care each month can add years to your security products, preserve your warranty, and ensure that both your main home and your holiday retreat remain safe sanctuaries.
