Operating entirely without government funding, the Sandton SPCA performs near-miracles daily, rescuing and rehabilitating vulnerable animals from low-income communities using repurposed shipping containers and limited capital. Now, a critical technological intervention is helping the non-profit facility achieve hospital-grade care. A joint donation by Elmecair and LG South Africa has introduced advanced climate control to the SPCA’s most highly infectious and sensitive zones, saving lives by changing how the clinic operates.
The targeted upgrade has stabilised temperatures, reduced reliance on crude environmental workarounds, and enabled proper infection-control protocols.
The most dramatic transformation occurred in the SPCA’s Parvo unit. Housed in a converted steel shipping container, the space previously acted as an unforgiving heat trap in summer and offered minimal insulation during Johannesburg’s freezing winters. Without active climate control, turning this storage container into a functional isolation ward for highly infectious cases was impossible.
To solve this, Elmecair and LG supplied and installed a wall-mounted air conditioning system powerful enough to manage the container’s extreme temperature swings. The unit provides rapid cooling in summer and reliable heating in winter, functioning perfectly even with the frequent door openings required as employees move animals and medical equipment.
Inside, the unit operates as a strict high-care ward where employees wear full personal protective equipment to avoid cross-contamination.
“Puppies are brought in, assessed, and either humanely euthanised if too far gone or enrolled in a multi-visit treatment protocol,” explains Nick Smith, general manager at the Sandton SPCA. “We achieve an 80–90% survival rate for treatable Parvo cases, a figure that depends as much on environmental control as it does on drugs and nursing.”
The primary-care clinic, which handles procedures, dentistry, and wound care, has seen similar upgrades. Previously, the indoor temperature simply mirrored the extreme weather outside. This made winter mornings dangerously cold for animals recovering from anaesthesia, while summer heat stressed both the compromised animals and the employees.
With the new LG equipment in place, the clinic now maintains a comfortable, consistent temperature. This creates a safer, predictable environment for anaesthetised animals that cannot naturally regulate their own body heat.
Similarly, a high-care room for kittens and very young puppies – who struggle to maintain their body temperature – now functions as a self-contained micro-ward kept at a steady 23°C. Upgraded from a basic room with just a cold tap, the space now protects these vulnerable neonates from sudden cold snaps or heatwaves. Because the temperature is controlled, all feeding and litter equipment can now be washed and disinfected on-site, minimising the risk of disease spread.
This temperature stability has also completely overhauled the organisation’s infection-control strategy. The SPCA uses F10, a highly effective, low-fume veterinary disinfectant, instead of harsher chlorine-based products. However, this safer choice is only fully effective in spaces where temperature and ventilation are strictly managed. The new LG units limit condensation and prevent the temperature swings that would otherwise encourage mould and pathogen survival.
Smith notes that by supplying and installing these systems, Elmecair and LG have effectively given the SPCA the ability to treat the indoor environment as a controllable medical parameter, right alongside drugs, employees, and treatment protocols. For an animal welfare sector where every rand must be justified, this intervention demonstrates how targeted technology can fundamentally elevate the standard of care for the animals who need it most.
