Beach holidays are part of South Africa’s collective travel DNA. Flight Centre’s own global PR survey confirms it, placing South Africans ahead of every other market surveyed when it comes to prioritising slow, restorative travel.
“Downtime near the ocean sits at the heart of how many of us prefer to reset,” says Antoinette Turner, General Manager, Flight Centre South Africa. “But sun and sea aren’t the only criteria for the destination. Not all South African travellers like to experience the beach in the same way.”
Whatever your ideal beach break looks like, Shirley-Ann Henry, Regional Manager: Retail for Flight Centre South Africa, delivers an urgent message: “Leave the resting and reviving for when you get there. Holiday deals are selling fast. Book early but make sure your booking is changeable and refundable in case routing issues arise.”
Five visa-free destinations dominate the travel conversation for 2026, according to Henry. You can’t go wrong with any of them, but why not pick the one that’s just right for you?
Mauritius
Best for: Families, friends, and couples. Mauritius welcomes all kinds of beachgoers.
June–August conditions: Peak dry season, with daytime highs averaging around 24 – 25°C.
Mauritius remains Flight Centre’s top-selling beach destination for South Africans. “There’s a reason it keeps winning. It’s visa-free, flight time is short, and the all-inclusive resort infrastructure takes the guesswork out of a holiday,” explains Turner.
With a longstanding reputation amongst locals, it’s the benchmark by which all other beach destinations are measured. The appeal is straightforward: structured comfort, plenty to do if you want it, and nothing you’re obligated to do if you don’t.
“Be discerning about which side of the island you stay on, the type of resort you’d like, and book early. Mauritius packages and deals don’t sit around for long,” Turner urges. Consider the adults-only Solana Beach, or the family-friendly Preskil Island Resort situated on a private peninsula.
Mozambique
Best for: Seasoned adventurers craving a raw connection with nature.
June–August conditions: Peak dry season. Warm, sunny days, low humidity, and minimal rainfall. Daytime highs sit around 25 – 27°C.
“A beach holiday in Mozambique offers that faraway feeling,” says Turner, “Your route there can also become part of the adventure.”
Self-drivers opt for Ponta do Ouro because it’s closer, but Vilanculos is worth the extra mileage. Fly in if you’d prefer and use Vilanculos Beach Lodge as a base for boat trips to the Bazaruto Archipelago. Resorts in Mozambique range from well-equipped to refined, but it’s those rugged, untamed beaches that really draw you in. Watch for humpback whales throughout August!
“The lure for South Africans is not only the destination, but the journey, the space, the silence, and how pleasantly uncrowded it is,” Turner adds. “Mozambique is what slow travel actually looks and feels like when it’s not a marketing concept.”
Zanzibar
Best for: Laid-back sun-seekers willing to dabble in some culture.
June–August conditions: Dry and pleasant, with daytime highs often creeping up to 29°C.
Zanzibar punts an addictively chilled atmosphere, rounding out what Turner calls “a destination that rewards the curious as much as the restful”.
Cocktails or coffee post-beach frolic? Local bars and cafés lie within easy reach. The historic Stone Town also earns its time, but knowing the island helps you choose the right base. That’s where Flight Centre’s experts can help. Nungwi, at the northern tip, is one of the more spirited areas, but it has the advantage of being largely unaffected by tides, so you can swim and snorkel at any hour of the day. Phuket, Thailand
Best for: Those willing to go the distance for a good beach and an even better travel deal.
June–August conditions: June to August falls within Phuket’s wet season, meaning afternoon showers are common, but mornings are typically sunny. Temperatures remain warm throughout the day at 30 – 32°C, and the crowds thin considerably, making for a more relaxed experience than peak season.
According to Henry:
“Thailand is coming back swinging this year. There was a shift where Bali was more popular, but now I see Thailand reclaiming its ground, with all-inclusive travel deals galore.”
Some beach destinations feel too close to really shift your headspace. Much like Mauritius, Phuket doesn’t have that problem. It ticks the distance box, the timing box, and the budget box without asking you to give anything up on the experience side. And with eight championship courses, Phuket doubles up as a golfer’s dream.
“Airlines generally route through a Gulf hub to get there from South Africa, so do confirm reliable options with your travel expert before booking, as recommendations can shift,” Henry adds.
Diani Beach, Kenya
Best for: Sun-seekers looking for something new (or overlooked).
June–August conditions: Dry season throughout, with daytime temperatures typically reaching 28 – 29°C.
“Diani Beach is chronically under booked by South Africans relative to how good it is. Most don’t yet know where it is or what it offers. Best go now while it’s still a secret!” says Henry.
All-inclusive accommodation ranges from mid-range to high-end, and the beach delivers on both ends of the activity spectrum: wading through the shallows or deep-sea fishing, depending on what kind of day you’re after. It’s worth the flight to Mombasa via Nairobi from Johannesburg. Diani Beach is 34 kilometres away by road, but Bamburi Beach’s Travellers Beach Hotel & Club is even closer. No need to rush here.
