SASMA 2025 Celebrates 5 Years of Honouring Digital Royalty with “Kings & Queens of Mzansi”

The South African Social Media Awards (SASMA) returns for its 5th anniversary celebration, marking a proud milestone for a platform that has become the leading voice in honouring digital excellence, creativity, and innovation across South Africa.

This year’s theme, “ROYALTY – Kings & Queens of Mzansi,” pays tribute to the cultural influencers, storytellers, trendsetters, and online innovators who are shaping the nation’s digital landscape. SASMA 2025 will crown South Africa’s finest content creators — the individuals who continue to redefine influence, build communities, and bridge the gap between creativity and commerce.

A Platform Bridging Brands and Creators

SASMA was established to respond to a growing need within the industry: a space where brands and content creators can connect meaningfully. Social media has become a vital economic driver in South Africa — a place where careers are born, businesses are built, and communities are mobilized.

SASMA stands at the centre of this evolution, acting as a bridge between brands and creators, ensuring that authentic partnerships, creative collaborations, and new opportunities continue to flourish. By creating visibility, celebrating excellence, and giving recognition to digital talent, SASMA empowers creators to grow, while enabling brands to tap into the true pulse of South African culture.

From the Director, Weza Matomane

SASMA Director Weza Matomane shares a powerful message on the role of the awards in shaping South Africa’s future:

“At a time when youth unemployment continues to challenge our nation, social media has opened a new path. It has given thousands of young people the opportunity to earn a living, build brands, and support their families. SASMA is here to champion this new economy — to acknowledge, support, and uplift the creators who are forging their own careers.”

He further expresses excitement about SASMA’s growing broadcast presence:

“We are thrilled to partner with SABC 1 and SABC Plus to take SASMA to a national audience. This partnership ensures that young people from every corner of South Africa can be inspired, motivated, and empowered by the incredible talent celebrated on this stage.”

Matomane also extends gratitude to key partners:
Huawei Cloud, Yano Lyrics, and the entire content creator ecosystem for consistently showing up, innovating, and pushing the culture forward.

Government Recognition and Support

In a major milestone for the creator economy, SASMA 2025 will feature a keynote address by the Deputy Minister from the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS). This signals a growing commitment from government to support and stimulate the digital content creation industry — recognizing its economic potential, cultural importance, and impact on employment.
