Smooth Sailing: 10 Tips for First-Time Cruisers

Are you thinking of embarking on your first-ever cruise in 2025? You’re not alone! South Africans are embracing solo, group and multi-generational cruising like never before, with cruisers of all ages and stages discovering the magic of life at sea.

According to Flight Centre’s 2024 travel data, the typical cruise getaway now lasts, on average, 10 glorious days, and nearly half of all cruisers are investing in balcony cabins so they can enjoy a little extra cabin space, a private balcony or veranda, and breathtaking ocean views.

“Last year’s  State of the Cruise Industry Report from the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) shows that the average age of cruise passengers is 46—with Gen X and Millennials driving cruise growth across the world,” says Antoinette Turner, General Manager of Flight Centre South Africa. “And with everything from ziplining, water slides and go karting to food halls and fine dining, you can see why people are embracing cruise life!”

If you’re ready to take the plunge, but not sure where to start, Turner’s top 10 tips will ensure your first cruise is nothing but smooth …

  1. Pick the right cruise for you

Think of cruise lines like personalities—some are party-loving extroverts, others are sophisticated culture vultures. Research different cruise lines and ships to find your perfect match. Pro tip: Family-friendly lines offer everything from toddler clubs to teen discos, while luxury lines focus on fine dining, talks, and enrichment programmes. When you’re choosing a cruise, take a close look at both the shore excursions as well as the daily entertainment programme, especially if lectures, talks and shows are important to you.

“Themed cruises are also growing in popularity,” says Turner. “For example, MSC Opera is doing a 3-night 80s & 90s cruise from Durban to Portuguese Island in Mozambique in March 2026, a fantastic cruise for music-loving friends and family!”

  1. Time it right

Cruising is booming, so it’s best to book early in terms of both rates and cabin selection. But you should also consider the itinerary and time of year. Shoulder season will mean better rates and far fewer crowds in popular ports—an important consideration for destinations struggling with overtourism.

  1. Choose the perfect cabin

Although Flight Centre’s data shows that 49% of South African cruisers prefer balcony cabins, Turner says interior cabins are a great choice for those on a budget.

“Interior rooms have their own advantages. For example, light sleepers often say they have the best night’s sleep— because the interior cabins are completely dark when the lights are off,” explains Turner. “There is plenty of sound insulation too, and minimal disturbance in terms of outside noise.”

Pro-tip:  if you’re prone to motion sickness, opt for mid-ship, lower-deck cabins for the smoothest ride. Just set the alarm for breakfast—as there is every chance you’ll over-sleep each day!

  1. Pack like a pro

Pack layers—ships can be surprisingly chilly indoors while warm on deck. Don’t forget to pack a few formal outfits for special nights and comfortable walking shoes for shore excursions. Consider joining a few cruise forums on social media in the lead up to your cruise, as seasoned cruisers often have fantastic tips. For example? Pack in a power strip for multiple devices, and use a backpack for electronics, a change of clothes, and a swimsuit, just in case your luggage takes a while to make it to your cabin!

  1. Know what’s not allowed

Think you can bring your own iron or steamer? Not a chance. Cruise ships have strict rules on prohibited items, including certain electrical devices (due to fire risk) and even some food items. Check your cruise line’s policy before packing to avoid having your items confiscated.

  1. Skip the buffet on embarkation day

When you board, the buffet restaurants are usually packed with hungry passengers. Instead, head to smaller venues—like cafés or speciality restaurants—that are often quieter. This way, you can avoid the queues and start the cruise in a more relaxed fashion (cocktail in hand).

  1. Plan and pre-book activities

Want to dine in the best speciality restaurants or book an epic shore excursion? Do it before you board! Popular activities, dining experiences, and Wi-Fi packages often sell out quickly. Booking in advance saves you stress and sometimes even money.

“Obviously, it’s a good idea to book popular shows and excursions well before you set sail,” says Turner. “But also consider booking spa or wellness treatments. Norwegian Cruise Line’s Mandara Spa, for example, has an incredible Thermal Suite that offers a range of hot and cold therapies—but you need to book to avoid disappointment.”

  1. Disconnect and enjoy

While Wi-Fi is available on most ships, it can be expensive. Instead of staying glued to your devices, embrace the cruise lifestyle—meet new people, enjoy live entertainment, or simply relax and take in the ocean views. The chance to disconnect on a cruise is a great drawcard for parents wanting to institute a digital detox—and for execs wanting to relax and reset. If you must stay connected, consider purchasing an internet package in advance for the best rates.

  1. Stay flexible

Cruise itineraries can change due to weather, port conditions, or other factors. If a stop gets cancelled, take the opportunity to enjoy the onboard amenities—hit the spa, try a new activity, or lounge by the pool. Staying flexible ensures you make the most of your cruise, no matter what.

  1. Money matters

Turner suggests chatting to your travel expert about pre-purchasing packages including drink packages, speciality dining options, shore excursions, Wi-Fi packages, and sometimes even spa packages before your cruise—often with impressive discounts when compared to buying onboard.

“As an example, NCL’s More At Sea™ upgrade includes premium beverages, speciality dining, enhanced Wi-Fi, discounts on shore excursions, and even the option to bring a 3rd or 4th guest at a discounted rate,” says Turner. “It offers unbeatable value—and it’s the perfect way to maximise your trip!”

Whether you like the idea of an immersive, refined, small-ship experience (like Oceania Cruises’ Allura, which sets sail from Athens to Istanbul in June 2025) or a local, family-friendly MSC cruise to test your tribe’s sea legs, Turner recommends getting hold your travel expert before 2025 disappears into the sunset!
