Sizekhaya celebrates landmark first day as South Africa’s new national lottery operator

Sizekhaya Holdings has marked a historic first day as operator of South Africa’s National Lottery, celebrating a successful transition and the culmination of one of the most extensive lottery implementation programmes ever undertaken in the country.

The achievement follows months of intensive preparation, testing, training and deployment, resulting in a national footprint that spans thousands of retail locations and reaches communities across South Africa.

In addition to new jobs created by Sizekhaya, phase one operational milestones include the installation of more than 5 500 lottery terminals nationwide; the training of 10 000 retail staff members in the first phase of on-boarding; and the inclusion of a number of new banking partners that were historically excluded from lottery ticket sales.

These are achievements that have been matched by no other National Lottery operator in the 26 year history of the lotto in South Africa.

Sizekhaya’s debut Powerball jackpot is worth an estimated record-breaking R240 million.

In addition, 3 000 terminals participated in national play-day testing, while more than 20 live draw rehearsals and 14 days of daily Lotto simulations were successfully completed before go-live.

These figures represent one of the largest and most comprehensive operational readiness exercises undertaken in the history of South Africa’s National Lottery.

Sizekhaya Chief Executive Officer Lebogang Ndadana says the successful launch reflected the commitment, expertise and determination of hundreds of people who had worked tirelessly to ensure that South Africans could continue to participate in the National Lottery seamlessly from day one.

“Today marks the beginning of a new chapter for the National Lottery and for the millions of South Africans who play it, support it and ultimately benefit from it,” says Ndadana.

“The successful launch of operations is the result of months of meticulous planning, extensive testing and extraordinary teamwork. We are immensely proud of what has been achieved in a relatively short period of time and grateful to every employee, retailer, partner and stakeholder who contributed to making this possible.”

The new network includes strong representation across South Africa, with terminals deployed in every major province and extensive coverage across both metropolitan and regional communities. The rollout includes partnerships with leading retail groups as well as a significant network of independent retailers, ensuring broad accessibility for players across the country.

Ndadana says the scale of the deployment demonstrated Sizekhaya’s commitment to building a modern, accessible and resilient National Lottery, capable of serving South Africans for years to come.

“Our focus has always been on building a lottery that is reliable, inclusive and future-ready. The extensive testing programme we undertook before launch, including thousands of terminal play-day tests and repeated live draw simulations, was designed to ensure exactly that.

“Today’s success gives us confidence that we have established a strong foundation from which to grow participation, enhance the player experience and maximise returns for the good causes that depend on National Lottery funding.”

Ndadana adds that while the successful first day is an important milestone, it represents only the beginning of Sizekhaya’s stewardship of the National Lottery: “We recognise the responsibility that comes with operating one of South Africa’s most important public institutions. Our commitment is to continue investing in innovation, accessibility, integrity and operational excellence as we build a National Lottery that all South Africans can be proud of.”

As operations commence, Sizekhaya remains focused on ensuring a smooth player experience, supporting retailers across the country and delivering on its vision of building life-changing assets through the National Lottery.
