AWARE.org hosted its Road Safety Partners Breakfast, bringing together partners from industry, government, law enforcement, rehabilitation, and the road safety sector to reflect on the progress we have made together in reducing alcohol-related road harm.
Representatives from the National Department of Transport, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department (TMPD), Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) and NICRO gathered to reflect on progress, share insights and reaffirm their commitment to creating safer roads and reducing road fatalities.
The event brought together organisations that partner with AWARE.org throughout the year to implement, support and strengthen road safety interventions across South Africa, creating a valuable opportunity to reflect on progress and reinforce a shared commitment to safer roads.
The engagement highlighted the importance of sustained collaboration across sectors, recognising that meaningful progress requires more than enforcement alone. Education, awareness, rehabilitation and community engagement all play a critical role in shaping safer behaviours and supporting long-term change on South African roads.
The event also provided an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of organisations and individuals working on the frontline of road safety and to strengthen relationships that support ongoing impact.
“Reducing alcohol-related road harm requires a collective effort,” says Mokebe Thulo, CEO of AWARE.org. “While enforcement remains a critical component of road safety, lasting change is achieved when government, law enforcement, rehabilitation partners, communities and industry work together towards a common goal. This engagement was an opportunity to celebrate that collaboration and reaffirm our shared commitment to safer roads for all South Africans.”
