Beyond the field: Rugby as a lifeline for South African boys

A 2023 UNICEF poll found that 60% of children and young people in South Africa feel they need mental health support, with 63% actively seeking help. Boys, in particular, face unique mental health challenges due to stigma and limited access to resources.

Sport has proven an effective way to boost both mental and physical health, as well as overall wellbeing. The Boland Rugby Union, which has been shaping exceptional young men since 1939, is stepping in this year with support from South Africa’s leading fibre network operator (FNO), Vuma, to provide a safe haven where boys can thrive both mentally and physically. This is crucial in a country that ranks among the world’s top 10 for male suicide.

Building character one pass at a time

“One of the things I have always loved about rugby, and what sparked my journey as a player and coach, was the sport’s ability to create role models and structure for young men,” says John Booysen, Boland Rugby Union U18 Head Coach. “To play rugby well, you must have discipline and communicate effectively. Both are crucial life skills, and rugby helps teach them.”

For many young boys, rugby is more than just a sport, it’s a foundation for character. It fosters resilience, teamwork, and self-worth, giving boys a purpose that keeps them away from negative influences. Boland Rugby Union keep young boys engaged in constructive activities, providing guidance and discipline through sport.

As Booysen explains, “Rugby teaches you a lot about yourself. To play on a team, you need self-belief, and that’s what many young men are missing. It also teaches manners and keeps you fit – both important parts of being a good member of society.”

Through the mentorship the boys receive as they move through the ranks, these young “Bolanders” find more than just a team – they find a family and a potential path out of poverty. Rugby also builds community connections, giving these developing young men a support structure they can rely on. Vuma’s sponsorship strengthens these efforts by ensuring players have the sports equipment they need to perform at their best. This direct support complements mental health assistance, creating a holistic network that equips these young men to navigate life.

Supporting boys for a better future

By introducing mentorships early, Boland Rugby creates a smoother pathway to success.

Taylor Kwong, Head of Marketing at Vuma says, “such initiatives play a vital role in shaping future generations and align closely with Vuma’s dedication to empowering communities and investing in the future of South Africa.”

She continues, “We will keep supporting the Boland team, eagerly anticipating more success stories and watching these talented young individuals break boundaries and make a name for themselves.”

As South Africa priorities mental health, it’s essential to address boys’ unique needs. Sporting teams like the Boland Rugby Union play a vital role, in filling the gap in mental health support and using sport to foster well-being, community, and purpose. By supporting initiatives like these, we’re not only investing in sports, but in the resilience, leadership, and strength of the next generation
