Rays of Hope, a non-profit supporting the educational needs of children in Alexandra, is calling on cycling enthusiasts and compassionate individuals to participate in the 947 Ride Joburg Ride Rays of Hope Charity Team. The organisation’s annual participation in 947 Ride Joburg aims to raise funds that will enable more children in Alexandra to receive quality education and support, paving the way for brighter futures.
Cyclists can sign up to join the Rays of Hope team participating in the upcoming 947 Ride Joburg event, taking place on 9 November 2024, to make the participation count towards this worthy cause.
“We are thrilled to be part of the 947 Ride Joburg and to give people an opportunity to make a tangible difference in a child’s life,” says Muziwethu Zwane, CEO of Rays of Hope.
Mr Zwane notes that every little bit counts, and that those who are not able to hit the streets on a bicycle this November can also donate. “Whether participants cycle on our behalf or choose to donate, every contribution counts. Starting from just R200 can help ensure a child receives critical educational resources like English and mathematics tutoring through our Rose Act Saturday school initiative, a nourishing meal or other basic needs.”
Why education matters
Educational challenges continue to affect the youth of Alexandra, with Alexandra schools often under-resourced and classrooms overcrowded as well as lacking essential learning materials. What’s more, with most children speaking isiZulu or other African languages at home, mastering subjects taught in English is a common struggle. This language barrier can have a ripple effect on their academic performance, future job prospects, and long-term success.
Rays of Hope’s Rose-Act Saturday School addresses these challenges by providing structured, high-quality tutoring and mentoring to students, helping them build a strong academic foundation.
How to get involved
Cyclists who want to support Rays of Hope’s cause can register for the 947 Ride Joburg using the following entry link and coupon code:
The entry fee is R695, followed by an additional R2000 that covers the Rays of Hope cycling jersey, a health pack and administration fees. For those unable to cycle, direct donations to Rays of Hope are welcomed and will be channelled into funding the educational support programmes run by Rays of Hope for children.
Be the change
“It’s not just about the race—it’s about the impact we can make together,” adds Zwane. “Even if you aren’t riding, your donation can help change a child’s story from struggle to success.”
