Hospitality is a powerhouse for South Africa’s economy and women are taking the charge

In March, we celebrate women across the world (International Women’s Day on 8 March), making it the ideal time to celebrate the strength and resilience of women in hospitality. With women making up 56% of the workforce, they are not just part of the industry—they are playing a serious part in shaping it.

The hospitality industry is a powerhouse for South Africa, with a market size of approximately USD 1.42 billion and expected growth to USD 1.76 billion by 2030. As the tourism sector continues to expand, creating nearly 800,000 new jobs, women are playing an increasingly influential role in shaping the future of hospitality.

The sector is fast-paced and dynamic, and while it presents challenges, women in hospitality continue to rise, lead, and innovate. Ensuring a workplace that supports wellness and balance is key to sustaining this momentum.

Women in hospitality are also setting new standards of leadership and excellence. As managers, chefs, hotel directors, and event coordinators, they ensure that the industry thrives. Hayley Collison, Lead RED General and Reservations Manager at Radisson RED Waterfront, highlights the importance of a wellness-driven approach: “Hospitality is about creating experiences, but to do that effectively, we need to take care of the people who deliver these experiences. A positive and supportive workplace culture benefits our employees and the guests we serve.”

A wellness-first approach

Recognising that high-energy industries require balance, forward-thinking hospitality businesses are implementing wellness initiatives that enable their employees to thrive. A number of hotels work to create a work environment where wellness is prioritised through access to gym facilities and mental health support services to encourage physical and emotional wellbeing; regular team-building activities that boost morale and maintain a positive work culture; supportive leadership that acknowledges employee efforts, provides feedback, and encourages an inclusive workplace; and career development opportunities, including cross-training and upskilling initiatives, to ensure career progression and job satisfaction.

Balancing success and self-care

A fulfilling career in hospitality doesn’t mean sacrificing personal wellness. Hayley shares her tips for maintaining balance and motivation:

  1. Effective time management: Prioritising tasks and planning ahead to maintain productivity.
  2. Setting boundaries: Understanding the importance of self-care and making time for rest.
  3. Celebrating achievements: Acknowledging successes, both big and small, to stay motivated.
  4. Staying inspired: Remembering personal and professional goals to navigate challenges with purpose.

For women looking to build a lasting career in hospitality, Hayley offers these key insights:

  • Stay adaptable: The industry is always evolving, and flexibility is a valuable skill.
  • Prioritise wellness: A successful career starts with taking care of yourself.
  • Be proactive in learning: Continuous growth opens doors to leadership opportunities.
  • Build strong networks: Collaboration and connections can propel careers forward.
  • Embrace the journey: Hospitality is about creating memorable experiences—enjoy the process.

As the industry continues to grow, businesses that prioritise employee wellness will without a doubt attract top talent and continue to thrive on innovation and excellence. Women in hospitality are proving that strength, leadership, and self-care go hand in hand. With the right support systems in place, they will continue to lead, inspire, and redefine success in the sector.

In an industry known for its energy and excitement, one thing remains clear: supporting wellness is beneficial, but more importantly, it’s essential.
