Sustainable Tourism: A Rising Priority for the Hospitality and Travel Sectors

0

With World Sustainability Day on the horizon, the focus is turning towards an increasingly critical issue—sustainable tourism. The recent signing of the Climate Change Act by President Cyril Ramaphosa has made it clear: South Africa’s tourism sector needs to evolve if it wants to meet the challenges of climate change head-on. Companies such as The Capital Hotels, Apartments and Hotels, SolarEdge and Cathay Pacific are at the forefront of this transition, illustrating that sustainability can coexist with growth and innovation.

Pioneering Green Practices in Hospitality

Marc Wachsberger, CEO of The Capital Hotels, sees the Climate Change Act as a pivotal moment for the hospitality industry. “The Act highlights the critical need for sustainable practices across all sectors, and tourism is no exception. For South African hospitality to thrive, we must adopt energy-efficient solutions that reduce our carbon footprint while ensuring a quality experience for our guests,” he says.

The Capital Hotels, Apartments and Resorts has become a champion of sustainable hospitality, investing millions into renewable energy initiatives to power 80% of its properties with solar by 2025. This move not only aims to reduce the group’s carbon footprint but also provides a buffer against the challenges of load shedding—an issue that continues to affect businesses across the country.  The Capital is also on the cusp of signing an agreement with Discovery Green which will provide wind and solar power for their hotels and will cover 90% of their hotel usage.

Beyond energy, The Capital is leading the charge in water conservation, an increasingly critical issue in South Africa. The group has implemented a borehole project at its SEVEN Villa and The Capital Zimbali properties, with The Capital On The Park slated to be next. Currently, this initiative allows Zimbali’s water needs to be fully met by borehole sources, reducing dependence on municipal supply. The aim is for the other properties to follow suit. Moreover, The Capital Pearls and Zimbali, two luxury spots in Durban, have embraced innovative measures to address water scarcity and quality:

  • Blue Drop Standards: These resorts adhere to a South African programme ensuring top water quality and sanitation for guests, enhancing the safety and reliability of their water sources.
  • Advanced Purification Systems: These systems treat and reuse water, reducing reliance on municipal supplies and conserving precious resources.
  • Internal Water Circulation: The Capital Pearls employs an internal system to manage water use, ensuring efficient usage and reducing the demand on local water infrastructure.
  • Reverse Osmosis Systems: The Capital Zimbali has a backup reverse osmosis system that ensures clean water availability even if the city supply fails.

These investments form part of a broader drive within the sector to implement energy-efficient practices. From water conservation measures to solar-powered energy systems, The Capital is leading the charge, demonstrating that environmental responsibility can go hand-in-hand with business growth.

Shanna Docherty, Regional Head of Trade Sales for the Middle East and Africa (MEA) at Cathay Pacific.

Towards a Cleaner Sky

For Cathay Pacific, sustainability takes to the skies. The airline has committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and has set a near-term goal to reduce its carbon intensity by 12% from 2019 levels by 2030. A central part of this strategy is the increased use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), a cleaner alternative to fossil jet fuel that is produced from sustainable and renewable sources, which can reduce over 80% of its lifecycle carbon emissions. The airline has been one of the pioneers, working to expand the SAF supply chain by partnering with global suppliers and corporate partners to scale up the demand.

“We’re on a mission to move people forward sustainably and responsibly, and it’s a collective effort to travel greener together.” says Shanna Docherty, Regional Head of Trade Sales for Middle East and Africa (MEA) at Cathay Pacific. “We’re committed to the use of SAF and working closely with our partners to make air travel more sustainable. These efforts not only help us achieve our climate targets but also letting our customers to be part of the journey together.

Additionally, the airline is tackling waste reduction. By 2025, Cathay Pacific aims to reduce single-use plastic items to just 1.5 pieces per passenger, down from 7.7 in 2019, and to cut cabin waste by 30% by 2030. The focus is on incorporating circular economy principles, from how raw materials are produced, to how we design more reusable products, to how we recycle waste products.

Collectively Committing to a Greener Future

Together, The Capital Hotels, SolarEdge and Cathay Pacific demonstrate that sustainability in tourism is achievable through collaboration and innovation. As World Sustainability Day draws near, their efforts highlight the importance of transitioning to greener practices—not only for the health of the planet but also for the longevity and success of the tourism industry.

By embracing renewable energy, investing in cutting-edge technology, and rethinking travel’s environmental impact, these industry leaders are setting a new standard for sustainable tourism in South Africa and beyond. Their collective commitment is a reminder that while the journey towards sustainability may be complex, the rewards—for businesses, travellers, and the environment—are well worth the effort.

Seamless AWS migrations with Vodacom Business, now an AWS Migration Competency partner

0

Organisations of all sectors and sizes want to improve productivity and competitiveness through their digital systems. Yet, as newer technologies increasingly leverage modern services, many businesses struggle to migrate partially or completely to the cloud. No cloud migration is the same, depending heavily on the company’s specific technologies, processes, and digital plans.

Every business needs a reliable migration partner who knows what it is doing – and has the recognition to prove its abilities. Vodacom Business, an Amazon Web Services (AWS) Migration Competency partner, brings that experience and competency to the table.

To make migrations more predictable and seamless, AWS has created the AWS Migration Competency. Partners that achieve this competency have the validated expertise to develop and implement successful migrations to AWS systems.

Vodacom Business is already an AWS Advanced Consulting Partner and AWS Direct Connect Service Delivery Program partner. After two years of investment and focus, it has demonstrated the technical proficiencies and proven customer successes to become an AWS Migration Competency partner.

“Becoming an AWS Migration Competency partner was a two-year journey for us,” says Prince Hlatshwayo, Executive Head of Cloud, Hosting and Security at Vodacom Business. “We established numerous competencies and completed various migration projects. We have proven that we can deliver faster assessments, provide practical and relevant customer business cases, automate re-platforming and refactoring, and help establish the needed levels of governance and management.”

Achieving these goals is not simple, which is why few partners qualify for AWS Migration Competency.

They must demonstrate their abilities in the following:

  • Discovery, planning, and recommendation
  • Business case analysis
  • Application mobility
  • Data mobility, and
  • Application monitoring and orchestration

“Migrating and adapting applications and other technical components to work in a cloud platform is risky and time-consuming. Many business digitisation attempts fall short or fail outright, and the complexities of effective cloud migration often aggravate those failures. But with Vodacom Business and our AWS Migration Competency status, you know you are collaborating with experienced experts. We know what to look out for and how to avoid problems, and we are incredibly skilled and close to the AWS cloud ecosystem.”

Vodacom Business has helped thousands of customers adopt the powerful business-first technologies from AWS, saving migration costs and time and helping them continue expanding their digital capabilities as they grow and modernise.

Why AWS? For Vodacom Business, it is the obvious choice in next-generation cloud services:

  • Thousands of satisfied customers: The partner ecosystem of AWS helps customers successfully migrate all types of workloads, from a handful to tens of thousands of servers.
  • Extensive migration experience: AWS has developed the methodology, best practices, tools, and services to help simplify and accelerate migrations.
  • Quick time to value: AWS simplifies each step of the migration process, reducing the effort and complexity involved.

As an AWS Migration Competency partner, Vodacom Business joins an elite group that conducts and implements AWS migrations based on these expectations.

“When you collaborate with an AWS Migration Competency partner, you can bank on several things,” says Hlatshwayo. “You can expect better business agility, more cost efficiency, improved control and visibility, and getting the best performance from your workloads in the cloud, even if they are legacy systems. This is all packaged in a streamlined migration journey. That is the AWS Cloud Migration Competency promise and the Vodacom Business promise.”

Modernising your business technologies creates new business opportunities. Who you select to help you with that journey makes all the difference. Contact Vodacom Business and experience what many customers – and AWS – know: seamless and competent cloud migration that will deliver value and results quickly.

Slow Travel: The Holiday Trend that’s Picking up Speed for Tourists in a Hurry to Decelerate

0

We live in a world of instant everything – instant messages, instant meals and in fact, just about anything on demand. We’ve grown accustomed to living life in fast-forward but when it comes to holidays, shouldn’t we be hitting the brakes instead of the accelerator? Enter the concept of slow travel – a mindful approach to holidays and tourism that is gaining traction among seasoned globetrotters and local adventurers alike.

“Slow travel is about the journey, not just the destination. A worldwide movement, many tourists are moving away from whirlwind tours, preferring to linger at and savour the places they visit and forming deeper connections with them,” comments Shaun Lamont, Managing Director of First Group Hotels and Resorts. “It’s a shift from seeing everything to choosing fewer experiences that resonate more.”

The Upside of Slowing Down

So, instead of rushing from one tourist destination to another as you tick boxes off a must-see list, slow travel is characterised by quality over quantity and true relaxation. It’s about immersing yourself in the essence of the place you’re visiting, learning the history, discovering the hidden gem of a restaurant down a side street, taking meanders off the beaten track, or striking up a conversation with a local.

Full shot traveling couple sitting

“It involves a deliberate approach and meaningful exploration,” says Lamont. “We’ve noticed a shift in guest behaviour at some of our resorts and hotels, with some showing a definite interest in experiencing more local attractions and staying for longer periods,” he adds. “We are also seeing more people who attend conferences at our properties choosing to stay on afterwards just to relax and take in the sights.”

Lamont notes this was especially evident at the Group’s Bushman’s Nek Resort in the Southern Drakensberg. “Before the hotel tragically burnt down in August, guests were opting for longer stays to fully explore the area’s hiking trails, fly-fishing spots and San rock art sites.”

Disconnect and Reconnect

But why is slow travel gaining momentum? Lamont says that in our hyper-connected world where we’re constantly bombarded with information and rushing around, slow travel offers a much-needed respite.

“This trend in travel allows tourists to disconnect from the digital noise, reconnect with themselves and literally take things slower,” he explains. “The future of travel is not necessarily about ticking off every ‘must see’ tourist spot or destination on a list. Many people are investing in authentic travel experiences to gain a genuine understanding of the world around them. That’s why slow travel is also known as “mindful” travel.”

In fact, slow travel is being recognised as a balm for our mental well-being too. A less hurried pace allows one time to chill and truly unwind, combating the stress that can often accompany travel.

Win-Win

Slow travel also brings various benefits. By staying longer in one place, it reduces the need for frequent transportation, contributing to a smaller carbon footprint. Supporting local businesses also contributes to sustainability practices through locally sourced goods and services.

“Its impact is particularly significant on the economies of the relevant communities,” Lamont explains. It creates a mutually beneficial situation: tourists immerse themselves in authentic local experiences, while the relevant communities receive much-needed and sustained economic support.”.

Local Sector Response

South Africa, with its stunning yet varied landscapes and rich diversity, is an ideal destination for slow travel, and our local tourism sector is adapting to cater for this movement.

Lamont says that hotels are curating experiences that showcase local culture, while tour operators are designing more flexible, immersive itineraries.

“Slow travel is a shift that’s changing not just how we travel, but why we travel,” he concludes.

So, next time you are planning a trip, why not try slowing things down? Stay a little longer, wander a bit further and open yourself to unexpected adventures while making magical, lasting memories that stay with you long after you’ve returned home.

With Phase One of Ocean Cay’s Marine Conservation Centre Near Completion, MSC Foundation Mobilises Experts to Chart 2030 Roadmap for Coral Conservation in The Bahamas

0

The MSC Foundation looks forward to expanding its coral research efforts, with the first construction phase of its new Marine Conservation Center at Ocean Cay just weeks from completion. This flagship endeavour, centres around a thriving coral nursery with fragments growing from five distinct species and 13 genotypes of reef-building coral.

Phase Two of the construction and equipping of the state-of-the-art research facility is scheduled to be complete by April 2025 and will significantly accelerate restoration efforts under its Super Coral Programme at Ocean Cay — a Mission Blue Hope Spot in The Bahamas. The Marine Conservation Center will also include educational facilities for raising public awareness surrounding the critical need to save coral reefs and help the Foundation scale up the reach and impact of its public engagement efforts – a core element of the programme.

During a three-day expert workshop held on board MSC Seashore and at Ocean Cay, the MSC Foundation set the frame for its 2030 Roadmap for Coral Conservation based on discussions with 20 national and international conservationists, and other experts. The plan will represent a significant update to the Foundation’s original Roadmap for the Super Coral Programme, which was validated at an expert meeting held in Bimini, The Bahamas, in 2019.

Experts in Discussion at Workshop

“I’m heartened by the progress made under the Super Coral Programme. We have identified high thermal resilience in some genetic populations of corals, developed techniques to grow corals in open-water nurseries, started to trial methods to outplant these corals and 100% of our nursery corals survived the last marine heatwave,” said Dr David Smith, Chief Scientific Officer of the MSC Foundation Advisory Board.

“With renewed commitments coming out of three days of fruitful discussions with Bahamian stakeholders, partners and other experts, the opening of the research lab at the Marine Conservation Center will support the scale-up of our coral nursery and outplanting work, and serve the community as a hub of scientific collaboration and education.”

Since 2022, the Super Coral Programme has been focusing on identifying hardy species of coral, conducting research and propagating such types of coral species, mainly focusing on critically endangered elkhorn coral. The work builds upon MSC Cruises’ multi-year restoration of Ocean Cay’s marine ecosystem, which began when the company began redeveloping the former sand-mining site. The 64 square miles of waters around the island have since flourished and with the charted roadmap and the new Marine Conservation Center, the programme is entering a promising new phase of development.

Among the Super Coral Programme’s successes to date:

  • Identifying high thermal resilience in some genetic populations of corals
  • Developing techniques to grow corals in open-water nurseries
  • Successfully exploring methods for outplanting resilient corals
  • 100% survival of nursery corals during the last summer marine heatwave

About the Experts Workshop

The MSC Foundation experts workshop included representation from The Bahamas Department of Environmental Planning & Protection, The Bahamas Department of Marine Resources, The Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute (BAMSI), University of the Bahamas, Perry Institute for Marine Science, Nova Southeastern University, University of Miami, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology,  Dominicana de Estudios Marinos (FUNDEMAR), Coral Research & Development Accelerator Platform (CORDAP), IntelliReef, International Coral Reef Initiative, International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Mission Blue.

Executive Director of the MSC Foundation Daniela Picco hailed the collaboration as a “model for long-term partnerships between the public, academic and private sectors.” She added, “This programme shows we can make a lasting impact when communities, governments, and philanthropic entities come together with shared objectives. Our Marine Conservation Center will unveil the immense power of uniting the strengths of our Bahamian and Florida partners with other leading stakeholders, and the potential for a new model for ocean stewardship.”

During the workshop, the group of experts highlighted marine science education as a critical component of the Super Coral Programme. The MSC Foundation has worked with Nova Southeastern University and the University of Miami in Florida since 2020 to support graduate students in developing research that informs coral restoration at Ocean Cay.

The workshop included the Foundation’s newest programme partners, University of The Bahamas and BAMSI.   The agreements finalised in July 2024 will lead to scholarships and internships for Bahamian students, representing a crucial step towards regular exchanges of expertise and capacities in marine research and conservation.

“The Marine Conservation Centre is a beacon of hope and a powerful tool for enrichment, education and community engagement,” added Paul Lewis, Programme Director for the MSC Foundation in the Bahamas. “It’s not just about restoring coral, but about building understanding on a large scale on why coral reefs matter—how they protect our coastlines, support biodiversity, and contribute to the livelihoods of our people. The stage is set for a global case study in contemporary coral conservation.”

“Support from MSC Foundation for students at UB helps to fulfil our strategic vision for expanding programmes in areas of national need, and broadening research opportunities for our students,” said Dr Maria Woodside-Oriakhi, Provost and Vice President Academic Affairs, University of The Bahamas.

“This workshop reaffirmed that coral conservation is an environmental concern and a social and economic imperative. The future success of this programme depends on continually evolving our partnerships. The experts’ input will help us to outline ambitious targets for 2030, including large-scale public awareness campaigns aimed at cruise guests and visitors, informing them of the vital importance of conserving coral reefs in The Bahamas, the Caribbean and around the globe,” said Matthew McKinnon, Chairperson of the MSC Foundation Advisory Board.

ABOUT THE MSC FOUNDATION:

The non-profit MSC Foundation implements the MSC Group’s marine conservation, humanitarian, and sustainable development commitments worldwide, utilising MSC’s global reach and unique knowledge of the sea to protect and nurture our blue planet, its people, and our shared cultural heritage.

Concentrating on four areas – Environment, Community Support, Education and Emergency Relief – the Foundation promotes the protection and sustainable management of ecosystems, empowers vulnerable communities around the world to realise their full potential, supports equitable and inclusive quality education to foster enduring individual and collective development, and helps disaster-struck populations toward recovery.

The Ultimate 48-Hour Recharge

0

As we enter the final stretch of the year, many of us find ourselves running on empty, our batteries drained to critical levels. Work demands, family obligations, and the pressure to give back to our communities have left us depleted. Weekends, once a time for rest, have become as draining as workdays. The result? We start each Monday already exhausted, limping towards the year-end finish line, suffering with the dreaded “Sunday Night sickness”, every single night!

“Ten months into the year, many of us are stuck at that dreaded 10% mark, desperately needing to recharge. Just as your smartphone requires dedicated time to reach 100% charge, your body and mind crave the same opportunity to power up,” says Samantha Pillay, Director at First Loyalty Plus. “While 48 hours might seem like a mere fraction in the context of a year, it can work wonders when you plug into the right recharging activities. Think of it as a rapid-charging station for your soul – brief but powerful enough to rejuvenate your spirit and boost your overall well-being.

Pillay recommends the following ideas for a rejuvenating 48-hour weekend recharge:

1. Indulge in Spa Treatments: Kickstart your weekend with a blissful 90-minute spa treatment. Research from psychologists at the University of Konstanz revealed that people experience significantly higher levels of psychological and physiological relaxation after just ten minutes of massage! Now, picture the restorative power of a full hour and a half. First Loyalty Plus members enjoy exclusive discounts at partner luxury spas, making it easy to melt stress away with a massage, facial, or body treatment.

2. Embrace the Afternoon Siesta: A study published in the National Library of Medicine offers a resounding “yes” to the power of the afternoon nap. Researchers found that short siestas, lasting anywhere from a quick 10-minute doze to a more luxurious hour-long slumber, pack a powerful punch. These brief escapes into dreamland were shown to significantly boost mood, sharpen alertness, and reduce feelings of sleepiness. The best part? These benefits weren’t fleeting – they lingered, providing a lasting uplift to the nappers’ day.

Croissant, boiled egg, orange juice, yogurt breakfast on tray in bed in hotel room

3. Treat Yourself to a Hotel Stay: Why not elevate your weekend with a mini-escape? Picture yourself checking into a local hotel or resort for a night or two. This isn’t just a change of scenery; it’s a strategic move to hit your mental reset button. By stepping away from the familiar, you’re creating a space where relaxation isn’t just possible, it’s inevitable. This simple act of “getting away” triggers a surge of dopamine, your brain’s feel-good neurotransmitter. It’s the same chemical rush you get from travel but without the stress of long-distance journeys. In this new environment, you’re liberated from the usual weekend chores. No cooking, no cleaning – just pure, uninterrupted relaxation. Your only responsibilities? Indulging in room service, perhaps a leisurely soak in the tub, and surrendering to the embrace of crisp, fresh sheets. First Loyalty Plus members get up to 50% off some of South Africa’s best hotels and resorts, and you’ll wake up on Monday morning feeling like you’ve got your mojo back.

“Recharging your battery isn’t selfish—it’s essential,” says Pillay. “It will boost your energy levels and motivate those around you as reducing stress leads to greater patience and creativity in your interactions. So, prioritise some self-care time now before year-end; your family, friends and colleagues will also benefit from the revitalised you,” she concludes.

Sustainable Living: Repurposing Invasive Trees

0

South Africa has a significant issue with invasive and alien tree species which have spread across nearly 10 million hectares of land, consuming around 7% of the country’s precious water resources each year. Imagine these as uninvited guests at a party, and having made themselves at home, they’re incredibly hard to remove. Despite the eradication of many of these “guests” not being possible, the problem can be reduced to minimise the impact.

Divan Vermaak, Veld Management Specialist at Husqvarna South Africa explains the effect that Invasive trees can have on the environment: “Alien species compete with native flora and disrupt ecosystems, reducing essential resources like water and even leading to native species extinctions. It is therefore important to manage and remove invasive trees that have made themselves at home on your property before they do further damage to the health of the environment.”

However, their removal doesn’t have to mean waste. With a bit of creativity and the right equipment, you can transform their wood into practical, eco-friendly products. This will contribute to sustainable living while restoring balance to local habitats. Vermaak shares five practical and eco-friendly uses for wood from invasive trees.

1. Creating Placemats or Chopping Boards
Transforming invasive tree wood into functional kitchen items like placemats or chopping boards is a fantastic way to repurpose this resource. Using a chainsaw, you can cut the wood into desired shapes and sizes, then sand and seal them for a food-safe finish. These handmade items add a rustic charm to your kitchen and make great gifts as we approach the Festive season, promoting sustainability through reduced waste.

Chopping Boards

2. DIY Side Tables or Stools
Another creative use for invasive tree wood is crafting DIY side tables or stools. With the help of a chainsaw, you can design and build sturdy and stylish furniture pieces. These items can serve as unique additions to your home decor, showcasing your commitment to sustainable living and resourcefulness.

3. Repurposing as Firewood for Summer Braais
Some invasive tree wood can be repurposed as firewood, perfect for summer braais or cosy winter fires. This provides a practical use for the wood while supporting traditional outdoor cooking methods. However, when barbecuing or smoking, remember to select wood varieties recognised for their flavour and safety, whether alien or native to our environment.

4. Crafting Eco-friendly Garden Features
For those with ‘green fingers’, invasive tree wood can be recycled to enhance your garden. Start by trimming hedges with a brushcutter, then use the wood to create edgings or decorative garden paths to define garden spaces and add artistic appeal. Another idea is to shred or chip the wood to create mulch for gardens or landscaping projects. This will help retain moisture in the soil while adding nutrients. Wood chips can also be repurposed into natural walking paths or used as a safe, eco-friendly surface for playgrounds This prevents waste and promotes the use of natural materials in landscaping.

5. Building Biodiversity Havens
Crafting birdhouses or insect hotels will promote biodiversity in your garden. These eco-friendly structures provide shelter and nesting spaces for birds and beneficial insects, supporting the local ecosystem while providing valuable habitats. With tools like a chainsaw and brushcutter, you can shape the wood into sturdy, weather-resistant structures and actively contribute to the conservation of native species in your area.

Birdhouses

“If you are unsure about what trees are alien to South Africa, speak to your local nursery or go to https://invasives.org.za/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/South-Africa-Listed-Invasive-Species-A5-Booklet.pdf for a list of invasive alien trees and plants,” advises Vermaak. “And, why not consider planting a native species for each invasive tree you remove as well to replenish our green spaces? This practice not only helps restore the natural ecosystem but also ensures that future generations can enjoy the beauty and benefits of local flora,” he concludes.

When selecting shoes for comfort while out and about, consider key features that enhance your overall experience. Look for well-cushioned insoles that provide ample support for your feet, reducing fatigue during long periods of wear. Choose breathable materials to keep your feet cool and prevent moisture buildup, especially in warmer weather. A lightweight design is essential for ease of movement, while a flexible sole allows for natural foot movement as you walk. Additionally, ensure the fit is snug yet comfortable, with enough room for your toes to move freely. Lastly, check for good traction on the outsole to keep you steady on various surfaces, making your outings both enjoyable and hassle-free.
