Fujifilm GFX100 II opens new genres for large format photography

0

Fujifilm South Africa has announced the latest (and greatest) camera in the GFX lineup – the Fujifilm GFX100 II. This new flagship large format camera promises not only outstanding image quality due to its 102MP sensor, but also improved shooting speed, auto-focus (AF) performance and video quality.

To start, the GFX100 II features the newly-developed GFX 102MP CMOS II HS high-speed image sensor consisting of 102 million pixels. At 43.8mm x 32.9mm in size it’s approximately 1.7 times larger than a 35mm full-frame sensor. The mirrorless camera is powered by the high-speed X-Processor 5 image processing engine, which in combination with the sensor provide double the signal readout speed compared to 2021’s Fujifilm GFX100S.

Improved speed and auto-focus

Thanks to this improved signal readout speed, the GFX100 II is capable of continuous shooting of up to 8.0 frames per second, up from 5.0 fps on the previous GFX model. With a reinforced buffer memory, it opens the GFX Series up to the field of sports photography. It does so without sacrificing the high definition and high image quality synonymous with the large format sensor.

However, the GFX100 II is also the first GFX Series mirrorless digital camera that features Fujifilm’s AI-based subject-detection AF, developed with Deep Learning technology. The use of an improved algorithm has evolved not only Face/Eye Auto Focus (AF) but now allows photographers to automatically track animals, birds, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, aeroplanes, trains, insects and drones. Once again, this benefits sports photography, which requires advanced tracking capability to track a subject that moves quickly within the frame.

And enhanced video performance

The GFX100 II is the first GFX model that supports 8K/30P video recording, plus it can also record 4K/60P 4:2:2 10-bit video internally and features F-Log2, broadening post-production flexibility. The GFX100 II’s range of video features allows videographers to explore completely new avenues due to the possibilities of the large format sensor in use.

The camera is further equipped with the best Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) on a Fujifilm camera yet – a high-magnification and high-definition 9.44-million-dot EVF with 1.0x magnification. It boasts a smooth refresh frame rate of approx. 120fps in Boost Mode to accurately identify a subject’s fast movements. Alternatively, the 3.2-inch Tilt-Type touchscreen monitor at the back can be used, consisting of approx. 2.36 million dots.

This while low light performance is improved thanks to the five-axis In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS) now set to an impressive eight-stops – more than any other camera in the full Fujifilm lineup.

For those looking for even larger images, GFX users can use the Pixel Shift Multi-Shot function. This controls the IBIS mechanism to shift the image sensor by 0.5 pixel at a time and shoot 16 RAW images in a quick succession, with the dedicated software combining these to generate a mouth-watering 400MP image.

Price and local availability

The Fujifilm GFX100 II large format mirrorless camera, with its improved speed, AF and video capabilities, is set to land in South Africa during October 2023, with a suggested retail price of R160 000 incl. VAT.

Three new GFX lenses also coming

Fujifilm has also committed three new lenses to the GFX lens lineup. Two new tilt-shift lenses, the Fujinon GF30mmF5.6 T/S and the Fujinon GF110mmF5.6 T/S Macro, cater to the needs of professional photographers who want to explore composition and shooting positions in architecture, landscape and commercial photography. They do so by combining the tilt function of tiling their optical axis and the shift function of moving their optical axis, to alter how the optical axis relates to the imaging plane. The tilt-shift lenses are set to retail for a suggested R80 000 and R70 000 respectively.

Finally, the Fujinon GF55mmF1.7 R WR lens with its creamy bokeh characteristic and field-of-view close to that of human vision, allows for capturing genres ranging from day-to-day snapshots to full-fledged portraiture both indoors and outdoors. It comes with a suggested R45 000 retail price.

All the new Fujinon lenses are set to arrive in October 2023 in South Africa, alongside the Fujifilm GFX100 II large format camera.

Navigating the waters to business success

0

It is said that success is no accident, and for entrepreneurs who plot the right destination and navigate their “seas” strategically, victory is sealed.

One navigation instrument that successful companies should use, is focusing on delivering customer value at their core. When leaders focus on customer value as a core strategy, delivered across their products, services, operations and people, they ensure happy, satisfied customers.

Two entrepreneurs, Warren Bonheim and Frank Mullen, the founders of Zinia, an established IT company and Managed Services Provider (MSP), have for over a decade applied their business acumen to navigate the tough waters of the South African landscape.

From their early days in business with a small customer base to today where many mid-sized and corporate companies trust them, their focus on customer value creation, branding, and investment in technology for operational efficiency, contributed to their success.

Warren as the Managing Director of Zinia shares their learnings and provides insights for leaders to navigate the choppy waters of business to long-term success.

Focus on delivering customer value

From the outset we knew that the customer had to be at the heart of our business. How do we deliver value not just in terms of the product but the entire value chain of the business? It is important for businesses to enhance the intersection points between their customers and the business. How can they make it easier, faster, better when doing business with them?

When we started in 2009 we understood the pain points of companies, and tackling these issues became our priority, and ofcourse delivering our products and services seamlessly, simply, and quickly.

A customer value strategy can become one of your key differentiators in a cut-throat industry.

In our experience, an unwavering dedication to a value proposition that puts a customer’s positive experience with your brand above all else, is the key to success.

This approach set us apart when we are up against larger companies, giving us an edge and reinforcing why customers should do business with us.  Leading with the customer need and creating everything to support this is a great business strategy.

Branding and marketing should always be a priority

We always invest in building a brand to match our reputation in the market. In a highly competitive market, companies must find ways to stand out from the crowd; and great branding gives an edge.

In tough times, don’t pull back on marketing spend, in fact we went on the offensive, to inspire confidence in our brand; while competitors are defensively hiding in tough times, our brand is out there.

Your branding elements – corporate identity, marketing and sales collateral, website, digital presence – should all align with your purpose and becomes a key component of your success.

We focused on developing our visual brand to speak directly to our target customers to ensure we get the message across with a succinct value proposition.

When you connect deeply with what the customer needs and align your brand to that, the customer understands what you stand for and what you do.

Technology empowers business

The ability of leaders to select and implement technology to ensure operational excellence, as well as future proofing the business, is critical.

We invest heavily in technology and systems, not only to drive efficiencies but also to improve our performance and delivery to customers.

It is key for your business systems to be setup with simple dashboards for management to know where you are tracking on goals, and how your teams are delivering on customer expectations.

We use leading technology systems internally to manage the business as well as externally to deliver services to customers.

Automation has also allowed us to be more productive and effective when delivering IT services. Every business can take advantage of simple or more complex automation technology to make their delivery more streamlined and efficient.

It is important for leaders to stay on top of trends not just to operate more efficiently but also to drive growth, and use technology to transform how they do business, ensuring they remain competitive in a fast-changing landscape.

Top Tips for Gorgeous Summer Hair This Summer Season

0

It is summer and many of us are enjoying an easier laid-back approach to our beauty regime as we head back into spring. Especially those of us working from home, are getting to enjoy the lack of stress every morning presented by our previous battles with our hair and indulge in the precious extra time to embrace the finer things in life.

Reneé Potgieter, hair health activist and colour alchemist, is on a mission to change the way beauty is perceived. She knows as an expert for over 25 years, that a less is more approach to our hair is what leads to healthy, beautiful locks and that the summer season gives us the perfect opportunity to bring out our natural hair’s beauty.

Here are Reneé’s top tips to enhance your beautiful locks this summer,

with no extra work…

Embrace no heat styling

No heat styling is specifically the absence of artificial direct heat on the hair. For anybody that wants to restore health, vitality, and strength to their hair it is an absolute must. The no-heat method works because your hair consists in part of hydrogen bonds and artificial heat manipulates the hair thereby controlling its shape.

These temporary hydrogen bonds are radically responsive to moisture. So, while your hair may look fabulous just after styling, the moment steam, water or sweat hits, your killer styling disappears in seconds. These temporary bonds are responsible for controlling the temporary texture of your hair. However, if you manipulate them consistently with styling, long-term damage occurs to these bonds and your hair suffers a sort of “memory loss”.

Constantly manipulating hair texture, like making your curls straight with frequent blow-drying and straightening, means that these bonds will eventually “forget” their true natural form and essentially, your hair goes into crisis turning into a mess.  The only way to prevent this is to work with your hair structure instead of against it. Enhancement and nourishment, in place of relentless manipulation, will bring out the best in your hair structure.

Of course, this does not mean that you’ll magically wake up with perfect hair. Some mornings will be a little rougher than others, but with water no longer being the enemy, just a drop of it with a chemically light styling aid and a kiss from a hairdryer here and there, and your hair will begin to work with you instead of against you. Although no intense styling can happen while sleeping, it’s a great time to leave a nourishing treatment in your hair because nourished and healthy hair is cooperative.

Use natural styling products

Have you ever noticed how great your hair looks after a day at the beach? There are two reasons for this. One is that there are no mirrors for you to consistently critique yourself in, so you are forced to embrace your hair and its reaction to the elements.

Two, the salt in seawater acts as a filler to help smooth out the microscopic ridges on the cuticle layer of your hair shaft that creates hair irritation, thereby acting as a styling aid.  Broadly, a Styling Aid is a product that helps control irritation by smoothing the cuticle layer when we leave our hair to dry naturally.

Despite popular belief, damage is the main contributor when it comes to creating unmanageable hair structure. Any hair that is in bad condition will suffer from fizziness and in our attempt to help it, we often use styling aids that do more damage than good. When it comes to the gazillion styling aid products out there, remember that less is more and all of them will become redundant once your hair is in a healthy condition.

Quality styling aids are important in the beginning as they are formulated to not coat the hair with silicones or other heavy ingredients that do more damage than good. With any natural products, such as salt sprays, it is important to read the ingredients to ensure that they are of high quality and truly cleaner. Reneé says that some of the worst build-ups on hair she has seen have come from traditional cosmetic companies that have ventured into hair products. To avoid this, ensure your products are free from parabens, alcohol, and any other nasty chemicals you can’t pronounce.

Reduce and naturalise your colour

Every time you colour your hair, you expose it to harsh pigments and chemicals no matter how gentle the product. The more chemical exposure to the entire length of your hair shaft, the more compromised the entire cuticle layer will become and the worse the state of your hair will be.

A less is more approach to colouring means being open to blending techniques such as balayage which is a technique for highlighting hair, that creates a graduated effect for asymmetrical, natural-looking results. The regrowth from this technique is far less stark and will allow you to extend the period between your colouring sessions.

Being smart about your colour choices also goes a long way. The variance between your natural colour and the chosen colour should be as minimal as possible. For the softest regrowth, the gap between your colour and the altered colour shouldn’t be more than two shades.  The bigger the gap the more obvious your regrowth will be, ultimately forcing you into colouring more often and therefore compromising condition.

Feed your hair

Elasticity and porosity are the building blocks of naturally good hair structure, so it is important to care for these building blocks by nourishing your hair. Natural nourishing treatments, with botanical oils, come in all sorts of forms such as masks and conditioners. This process doesn’t need to be another laborious thing to add to your day and can be applied overnight with your hair loosely tied up.

Thankfully, natural oils are making a comeback, taking a note of inspiration from numerous ancient traditions.  Once again, make sure you use top-grade pure oils such as jojoba, for moisture, and almond, for a strengthening protein boost. These natural oils are so pure they become solid when you put them in the fridge which is a great indicator of quality.

The summer season is a time where we become more mindful of all the things we are blessed with, so sit back, relax and let your natural beauty shine through. You already have the hair of your dreams, you simply need to let it down.

opening of its first South African boutique, located in Sandton City’s Diamond Walk.
The 243 square metre Flagship Balmain Boutique will open its doors in late
September 2023.
More than 75 years ago, when Pierre Balmain first introduced his “New French
Style”, it immediately became clear to all that his eponymous house was offering a
distinctly fresh and feminine conception of haute couture, one which broke with
many of the well-established conventions of the era. His audaciousness paid off.
Pierre Balmain became one of the handful of young French talents who ushered in
the mid-century golden age of couture and helped to re-establish Paris as the world’s
fashion capital.
Since 2011, Balmain’s Creative Director, Olivier Rousteing, has been innovatively
building upon Pierre Balmain’s extraordinary legacy, while always remaining true

powerful, and global “Balmain Army” which lives on today.
The result is always a unique and instantly recognizable Balmain silhouette, style
and attitude that highlights the singular craftsmanship of the house’s celebrated
ateliers, while consistently referencing a rich Parisian heritage.

IT leaders share security concerns regarding tech innovation, but can they afford to let risk hold them back?

According to research by HPE Aruba Networking (NYSE: HPE), 64% of IT leaders believe that cybersecurity concerns are negatively impacting their organisation’s willingness to invest in innovative tech. This is part of a broader trend locally, with studies showing that 42% of South African companies say fear of the unknown is a hinderance to their adoption of technology such as AI. But this comes at a time when IT leaders must be empowered to embrace AI to accelerate business-critical transformation – something more than 60% of South African companies say is important to their business.

With headlines full of the promise of the latest technologies, HPE Aruba Networking’s research, which features responses from 2,100 IT leaders across 21 countries, examined how organisations are currently approaching the interplay between innovation and risk. The report also sheds light on the role IT leaders and the network have to play in facilitating safer innovation.

The rise of innovation

A vast majority (95%) of IT leaders state that digitisation is fundamentally important to unlocking new revenue streams in the next 12 months. In fact, both IT and the broader business are pushing to bring in new technologies that can boost innovation in terms of how the business functions and what it offers. As they look to increase innovation, organisations are turning to emerging technology, and are currently using or planning to bring in 5G (91%), AI and machine learning (ML) solutions (89%), or IoT and smart sensors (88%).

Despite this push, only 45% of IT leaders describe their organisation as innovative – and worryingly, even less describe it as secure (44%). In fact, research from PwC shows most South African organisations say they expect third-party breaches to increase significantly in 2023 when compared with 2022, saying that this is primarily due to an increase in digitisation.

Managing the growing risk

There is also a growing gulf between tech demands and the IT team’s capability to manage it all – more than half of South African businesses feel they aren’t well prepared to implement AI, with a further 54% citing internal skills levels as the biggest challenge.

Combining this rise in technology use with the lack of resource and broader trends around remote working, hybrid cloud, and distributed centers of data, organisations are facing greater exposure than ever.

“In an increasingly tough business environment, South African executives are under significant pressure to drive new revenue opportunities by increasing their digitisation. The introduction of emerging technologies, however, requires a new approach to security that delivers build-in protection. This is where AI Networking comes in,” said Mandy Duncan, Country Manager South Africa, HPE Aruba Networking.

The role of the network

According to the HPE Aruba Networking research, there is growing recognition of the network’s role in business transformation – and, in particular, of the link between the network and both security and innovation. In fact, 64% of IT leaders believe the network can support cybersecurity effectiveness and 61% believe it can support greater innovation. And IT leaders are investing accordingly – organisations are starting to press ahead with network-based security solutions including, Security Service Edge (SSE) or similar edge-to-cloud security (89%), policy-based network access control (88%), and Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) security (87%).

But evidence suggests that they still need help tying these investments together to realise their benefits – only 47% of IT leaders believe their current network can deliver or support flexible enterprise security and even less see its role in supporting emerging technologies (37%).

Duncan concludes: “The pursuit of innovation shouldn’t have to come at the cost of greater risk to the organisation’s security.  A unified approach that brings together all disparate network technologies can truly deliver a network capable of supporting safe innovation.”

Eleven ways to reduce your laptop’s impact on the environment

The climate crisis impacts all of us, and we know that to hold a global temperature rise to less than 1.5°C, we need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions dramatically. Addressing the climate crisis requires breaking it down into small actions that add up to a big impact. We can all make simple choices to shrink our carbon footprint, including that all-important laptop purchase. Check out these 11 ways to live your best laptop life and reduce your carbon footprint.

  1. Know your numbers

Do you know your carbon footprint? It’s the amount of greenhouse gases (GHGs) – including carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and others – that you produce as you live your life. There are several great calculators out there that can help you calculate your carbon footprint, like Carbonfootprint.com. You may be surprised by your own footprint, so knowing it will be the first step in figuring out where you can make savings. Many brands will help you compare the carbon footprint of various models to further inform your sustainability-minded buying decisions.

  1. The great recycle

We normally think of recycling as a waste issue, but it’s also a climate issue. For example, a recycled aluminium can has a 95% smaller carbon footprint than a can made from virgin aluminium.

So, before you buy a new laptop, consider how you might responsibly return, refurbish or recycle your old one. Depending on the brand of your laptop, you may be able to send it back to have it recycled. Recycling policies vary from brand to brand and have improved significantly over the past few years. But today, some will even collect your old electronic goods, regardless of brand, in any condition, and recycle them for free.

  1. Before you replace it, can you repair it?

Repair is essential to keep products in use longer and out of landfills, so it’s worth checking whether a laptop is designed with repair and recycling in mind. If a component is covered in adhesive and takes hours to disassemble, it isn’t as easy to repair and may not be able to be recycled at all.

Some brands provide customers with easy access to the resources, spare parts and support they need should they wish to repair their products themselves. For example, some brands, like Dell, make it easy to access information online, including manuals and downloads that keep products performing. Publishing their parts list online means customers can order parts to conduct their own repairs. Dell has even created an augmented reality app that provides step-by-step part replacement instructions for almost 100 products for many customer-addressable issues.

  1. Level up

Many people think about changing their computer to support the latest applications or games. Before buying new, check whether you can upgrade components like memory, storage, graphics cards, or the CPU to instantly extend your device’s lifespan.

  1. Old is the new, new

If you have decided on a new laptop, why not consider refurbished? Going through an official refurb programme removes the uncertainty of buying through peer-to-peer websites. You can have peace of mind with a warranty that protects your device and your studies.

  1. Lean, mean (sustainably built) machine

If buying new, what is it made of? There are lots of materials that can be recycled to create a new laptop. Recyclable and renewable materials, including tree-based bioplastic upcycled from the papermaking industry, reclaimed carbon fibre, post-consumer recycled plastic and new bio-based rubber feet made from castor bean oil can all be used to create sustainable laptops.

  1. Energise your coursework with energy efficiency

You’ve got energy-efficient LED light bulbs in your house – but how energy efficient is your laptop? Energy-efficient devices help cut your electricity bills and reduce the amount needed. Thankfully, there are some helpful standards to tell you how efficient any device is, like the EPEAT rating (the Green Electronics Council’s Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool). It’s the most comprehensive tool for evaluating overall environmental criteria and makes it easy to evaluate the life cycle implications of a product.

  1. Don’t feed the vampires

Reducing energy use is a simple solution with environmental and economic benefits. Energy consumed by common household devices in standby mode can account for up to 12% of residential energy use, accounting for a substantial portion of your electricity bill. PCs are some of South Africa’s top energy vampires, so switch off your laptop at the mains when you’re not using it – even the standby light uses energy.

Try not to over-charge your laptop unnecessarily, too. Unplugging it as soon as it’s charged will save energy and help your battery last longer. You can also adjust your PC’s power settings to reduce the energy impact and save battery life by optimising things like backlit-keyboard, screen brightness and adjusting your settings for ‘Best Battery Life’.

  1. What’s on the outside counts too

What about packaging? South Africa generates 2.4 million tons of plastic waste every year, of which only 14% is recycled, so making sustainable choices based on packaging will also help you select a more sustainable laptop. Check whether a company uses styrofoam or other packaging materials that are difficult or impossible to recycle. Many companies now use reclaimed plastics and natural products like bamboo to make more sustainable packaging, so you can go ahead and responsibly recycle or compost the packaging – or use it to send your old tech for recycling!

  1. Future-proof

If you want to play your part in preserving the environment, one of the easiest things you can do to help is preserve your laptop – that means protecting it and extending its lifespan. So, update your software regularly to optimise your PC’s efficiency and avoid viruses, treat the battery well, and keep your laptop clean!

While software can’t help get rid of fingerprints on a screen, it can help you keep your energy-efficient laptop running like new. Dell’s SupportAssist, for example, is an intelligent technology that runs on your PC and removes viruses, detects issues, optimises settings and tells you when you need to make updates. All of which keep your laptop healthier, reducing the need to replace or refurbish/recycle.

To protect your choice of sustainable laptop when on the move, consider purchasing a laptop case. For a double-whammy sustainability choice, there are cases on the market that are eco-conscious in their own right, with some being made out of recycled ocean-bound plastics.

  1. Variety is the spice of your device

As a consumer, you have the power to influence how seriously companies take the issue of our collective carbon footprint. You can choose to reward companies with strong sustainability programmes by selecting their products when you make purchasing decisions. You can also let them know you appreciate their work through social media or other outlets – everyone appreciates a little positive reinforcement now and then! Whether at the ballot box or the checkout, your choices can signal that you want to decarbonise the economy and push for climate change solutions.
