Galaxy Z TriFold takes premium performance and experience of an ultra phone to the next level by unfolding twice to reveal the most immersive screen on a phone, providing ultimate productivity of mobile workspace and cinematic viewing

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – 08 December 2025Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has announced the launch of Galaxy Z TriFold, further expanding Samsung as one of the leaders in new form factors for the mobile AI era. Built on a decade of foldable category innovation, Galaxy Z TriFold showcases engineering mastery with its most advanced foldable technologies optimised for the unique demands of a multi-folding design. Its slim profile ensures the portability of a premium phone that provides ultra performance and, when unfolded twice, it reveals an immersive 10-inch display that elevates productivity and cinematic viewing – offering a best-in-class mobile experience never before seen in any other form factor.

“Samsung’s relentless pursuit of new possibilities continues to shape the future of mobile experiences,” said TM Roh, Chief Executive Officer, President, and Head of Device eXperience (DX) Division at Samsung Electronics. “Through years of innovation in foldable form factors, Galaxy Z TriFold solves one of the mobile industry’s longest-standing challenges – delivering the perfect balance between portability, premium performance and productivity all in one device. Galaxy Z TriFold now expands the boundaries of what’s possible for mobile work, creativity and connection.”

Shaping the Future With Decades of Mobile Expertise

Samsung has long been one of the leaders in the mobile industry, pioneering new categories and experiences such as large screen devices, foldable form factors and the use of AI on a mobile device, with each of these innovations created with the user in mind. Backed by state-of-the-art R&D, end-to-end manufacturing and rigorous quality control, Galaxy Z TriFold showcases how Samsung continues to set new benchmarks for a phone that maximises output while remaining portable.

In Samsung’s research and design process, innovation is driven by understanding how people use devices. The company’s decade-long experience in foldable category innovation inspired Galaxy Z TriFold’s unique multi-folding form factor, which uses an inward-folding design to protect the main display. The folding mechanism has been precisely engineered for easy opening and closing, with an auto-alarm alerting the user of incorrect folding through a series of on-screen alerts and vibrations. Every detail is crafted with precision and purpose to deliver an intuitive, user-friendly experience.

Measuring just 3.9 mm at its thinnest point, Galaxy Z TriFold delivers flagship-level performance powered by the customised Snapdragon® 8 Elite Mobile Platform for Galaxy, a 200 MP camera and the biggest battery Samsung has ever had in a foldable phone. The 5,600 mAh three-cell battery system has been placed in each of 3 panels of the device for balanced power delivery and all-day endurance. Combined with 45 W super-fast charging, Galaxy Z TriFold lets users stream, create and work with simplicity.

To balance the power of an ultra-quality device in a thin, portable frame, a re-optimisation of the core foldable technology had been applied. Every part of the device was crafted with deep attention to structural innovation and product assurance:

  • Samsung’s Most Advanced Hinges Yet: Drawing on its heritage in foldable phone innovation, Samsung refined the Armor FlexHinge to meet the unique demands of Galaxy Z TriFold. Two differently sized hinges with a dual-rail structure work in harmony, creating a smoother, more stable fold despite varying weight and components across the device. The hinge structure also allows the screen panels to meet securely with a minimal gap, enabling a thinner, more portable device.
  • Restructured Foldable Display: Galaxy Z TriFold introduces new display technology made for the 10-inch screen that folds twice into a pocketable phone. A reinforced overcoat has been added to a shock-absorbing display layer for better resistance across the dual-folding device.
  • Advanced Materials on the Exterior: The titanium hinge housing introduces a thin piece of metal that protects the folding mechanism and resists wear over time. The frame of the device is supported by Advanced Armor Aluminum, a high-strength alloy that adds rigidity without increasing bulk. The frame helps ensure that the screens don’t make contact with each other, and a ceramic-glass fiber-reinforced polymer back panel keeps the design thin yet resistant to cracks.
  • High-Quality Inspection, on Each Device: Every unit goes through a series of strict quality checks to achieve every small requirement. For instance, CT scanning of the flexible printed circuit board verifies that it has been correctly manufactured according to the design, ensuring accuracy and reliability before bonding it together with the other internal display components. Laser scanning verifies that all internal components are mounted precisely at their intended height, securing surface quality.

Through design innovation, engineering excellence and high-quality standards, every device has been built to deliver the best user experience possible.

Samsung’s Most Versatile AI Phone, Powered by the Largest Screen

Productivity on Galaxy Z TriFold is heightened with powerful experiences, customised for the 10-inch display – the largest screen ever on a Galaxy phone. Like the users who inspired its dynamic design, Galaxy Z TriFold is powerful, versatile and ready for the modern AI era.

When Galaxy Z TriFold opens, the screen performs similarly to three 6.5-inch smartphones across the 10-inch display, giving users more room to multitask during their day. Users can use the screen with endless versatility – they can create across three different portrait-sized apps side-by-side without interruption, resize apps in multi-window to view the most important information clearly, or hold it in a vertical orientation when reviewing documents for improved focus. For example, an architect drafting design plans for a new home can use the large screen to operate three applications at the same time, to review blueprints, write a proposal, and calculate measurements in a single, multi-window workspace. If a call comes in unexpectedly, they can answer without disrupting their layout or losing their momentum. When it’s time to jump back into work, the Taskbar at the bottom right of the display instantly resurfaces recently used apps, bringing the full setup back into view with a single tap. Familiar apps and features, such as My Files and Samsung Health have also been optimised for a large screen, allowing users to organise and understand insights at a glance.

To match the powerful capabilities a screen of this size can provide, Galaxy Z TriFold is the first mobile phone to have standalone Samsung DeX available, meaning users can set up a full working environment from virtually anywhere. By going to the Quick Settings panel and selecting DeX for Galaxy’s most advanced work setup, users can access up to four workspaces that can each run five apps simultaneously. From there, they can review and edit a meeting presentation in one workspace and then quickly navigate to another to chat with friends and shop online. For even more productivity, users can add a secondary screen in Extended Mode, which enables a seamless dual-screen experience with an external monitor. Users can easily drag and drop apps across screens and work across both screens with desktop efficiency. Users can also add a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, instantly creating the ultimate portable workstation for complex projects or creative designs.

Certain apps may not run or require a separate license (for purchase) on Samsung DeX. The following features require Android 16 or higher: launching Samsung DeX with drag and drop, Multi desktops and Extended mode. Samsung DeX wireless connection is supported with TVs that support Android smartphone screen mirroring (Miracast) only. There may be a difference in performance depending on TV’s specifications and Wi-Fi environment. Recommended to use Samsung Smart TVs launched after ’19.

Every detail of Galaxy Z TriFold is designed for excellence – and with Galaxy AI, those capabilities elevate the device by making every feature more intuitive on a large screen. Features like Photo Assist, including Generative Edit and Sketch to Image, adapt to Galaxy AI flexibly with impressive scale, enabling users to capture and create with Samsung’s most versatile creative platform. Users can also easily compare before and after edits side by side. Browsing Assist can simplify how Samsung Internet is used as it can provide instant summaries or translations as needed.

Gemini Live on Galaxy Z TriFold is enhanced with multimodal AI that understands what users see, say and do. Users can seamlessly speak contextual questions and get answers without having to switch between apps for high level multitasking. The bigger screen provides design advice – when a user shows it a room, a shopping site and paint swatches, it will provide a custom recommendation. With screen or camera sharing on Gemini Live, users can simply ask questions about what they are viewing to get real-time assistance and insights – all on one device.

Samsung Account login may be required to use certain AI features. Samsung does not make any promises, assurances or guarantees as to the accuracy, completeness or reliability of the output provided by AI features. Availability of Galaxy AI features may vary depending on the region/country, OS/One UI version, device model and phone carrier.

A Pocket-Sized, Cinematic Viewing Experience

Galaxy Z TriFold’s unique form factor unlocks not only increased possibilities for creating and working, but also provides a perfect canvas for high-quality viewing of photo and video content.

Designed for maximum viewing with greater portability, Galaxy Z TriFold’s expansive 10-inch main screen is perfect for getting lost in movies or shows. For an extended YouTube experience, users can now watch a video and read the comments side-by-side. Minimised creasing on the device keeps content seamless and uninterrupted, and once closed, its slim profile allows it to easily slide back into any pocket.

Drawing on Samsung’s expertise in visual display, the device provides silky-smooth visuals on a Dynamic 2X AMOLED cover screen with a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. Galaxy Z TriFold features a bright display both opened and closed, with up to 2600 nits on the cover display and 1600 nits on the main screen. With Vision Booster optimising colour and contrast in any lighting, every image and frame comes to life in vivid detail, creating a truly immersive experience.

The Dynamic AMOLED 2X display on Galaxy Z TriFold based on Samsung internal testing for 100 percent Mobile Colour Volume in the DCI-P3 Colour range, which means your images aren’t washed out and you’ll get unbelievably vivid colours regardless of differing levels of brightness.

Large residential developments in SA secure energy-saving geyser management tech for solar farms, following the scaling of local tech manufacturer

0

Sensor Networks, South Africa’s leader in smart home and energy-management technology, has introduced a solar farm geyser management system built for large-scale residential developments.

As estates increasingly shift to solar power, the upgraded system gives developers real-time visibility and centralised control over thousands of geysers, reducing electricity costs, improving grid stability, and unlocking greater value from solar installations in our country.

“Large estates often experience synchronised geyser usage during morning and evening peaks, creating strain on PV and battery systems. Our solution installs a smart controller on every geyser, all connected to SensorDesk, our company’s cloud-based energy management platform. Developers can instantly switch off units during low-generation periods, automate heating schedules, and redirect excess solar into water heating using real-time data and advanced algorithms,” says Mark Allewell, CEO of Sensor Networks.

South Africa is moving rapidly toward solar-powered living, but without intelligent load management, developers carry the same problems from the grid into renewable systems: “If you can’t manage hot water at scale, you can’t stabilise or optimise a solar development. Our tech and system aims to solve that challenge, automatically and reliably.”

With the upgraded system, developers have real-time control over thousands of geysers – all at once. By directing surplus solar into water heating and protecting inverters during peak demand, the local tech company is giving developers a level of precision the industry has never had access to before.

More than 12,000 South African households already use Sensor Networks’ smart geyser technology, and over 2,000 homes in major developments run the solar farm system today. Developers report immediate efficiency gains, lower grid reliance, and dramatically improved operational control.

Sensor Networks is now preparing to scale the technology to tens of thousands of homes nationwide, with upcoming enhancements including predictive optimisation and AI-driven decision-making.

First year university disaster : How to turn “failure” into fuel

0

As the academic year draws to a close, many first-year university students find themselves staring at disappointing (or downright disastrous) results, or grappling with a nagging sense of misalignment. Whether they outright failed modules, scraped by with low grades, or simply realised that their chosen field doesn’t spark the passion they expected, these students should know they are not alone, and that there is hope, an education expert says.

South Africa’s university dropout rate – especially at first year – has long been cause for concern. Although statistics vary, it has been estimated as high as 40%. Last month, Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane also sounded the alarm on South Africa’s escalating first-year university dropout rate, saying that 35% of students fail to progress beyond their first year of study.

Dingaan Moropane, Deputy Dean: Teaching and Learning at IIE Rosebank College, says new students face significant hurdles, due to the transition from high school, personal challenges, or mismatched expectations. The good news? A disappointing first year isn’t the end of the road. Rather, it’s a pivot point, and it is entirely possible to regroup, reassess, and rebuild, he says.

“Students finding themselves in a predicament at the end of their first year should avoid making rash decisions, but rather take a structured approach to understanding what happened. Start by creating a simple timeline of your year: What were your high points? Low points? Did external factors like family issues, health problems, or part-time work play a role? Be honest about study habits. Did procrastination, poor time management, or ineffective note-taking contribute,” Moropane says.

“This exercise helps shift from emotional reaction to analytical insight. Remember, failure often stems from systemic issues like inadequate high school preparation or overwhelming course loads, not inherent inability.”

Once the reflection exercise is complete, the following steps will help students decide on the way forward:

TAP INTO UNIVERSITY RESOURCES IMMEDIATELY

Good universities will be equipped with support systems designed exactly for situations like this, so don’t hesitate to use them. Delaying can compound stress, so act quickly after receiving results, Moropane says.

“Book an appointment with your faculty advisor or student advisor centre. Discuss grade appeals if applicable (e.g., if extenuating circumstances weren’t considered), or options like retaking modules without penalty.”

Other resources that could assist include tutoring and study support services, financial aid services (if failure means you need to repeat a year) and mental health support, especially if anxiety or depression affected your performance, or might in the future.

Online resources are also more valuable than ever to get you back on track – and you can use these during the holidays to up your game.

RE-ASSESS IF DOUBT CREEPS IN

If your struggles stem from a lack of interest in your field, it’s okay to question your choice, Moropane says.

He says while it’s a major decision, switching majors or qualifications early can, ironically, save time and money in the long run.

“If a student is studying a subject that fails to spark genuine excitement or passion, they will almost inevitably struggle to stay motivated throughout their degree. Without that inner drive – the curiosity to learn more, the eagerness to tackle challenging concepts, and the vision of a fulfilling future career – it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain the momentum needed to complete assignments, attend lectures, and push through difficult periods.

“Over time, disinterest can turn into frustration, burnout, or even dropping out entirely, leaving the student with wasted time, financial burdens, and a sense of regret.”

Moropane says when it becomes clear, especially in the first year, that the chosen qualification simply isn’t the right fit, it is far wiser to pause and reconsider the path ahead.

“Continuing down a route that feels wrong just for the sake of finishing what you started or avoiding the discomfort of change often leads to greater costs in the long run: years invested in a qualification that won’t be used, mounting student debt, and missed opportunities to pursue something truly meaningful.”

Making the decision to switch doesn’t mean failure; it means having the courage and self-awareness to redirect energy toward a better future.

“However, this transition should never be rushed or impulsive. Before committing to a new direction, students must invest serious time in thorough research. They should explore a wide range of programmes, speak to current students and graduates at their current or prospective new university, attend open days, review graduate employment support and outcomes, and carefully examine course structures and modules,” Moropane says.

BUILD BETTER HABITS FOR ROUND TWO

Whether you’re retaking the year, pushing forward, or going in a new direction entirely, it is important to take the learnings from the less than successful first year, and implement changes to avoid repeating mistakes. Focus on sustainable routines rather than overnight overhauls, Moropane says.

Start stacking good habits, including developing new study methods, managing your time like a pro, keeping healthy and setting small, achievable goals.

Countless success stories prove recovery is possible, Moropane says.

“Your first year doesn’t define you, it’s a chapter in a longer narrative. Aim to treat setbacks as learning opportunities, not failures, and give yourself permission to rewrite the next page with a path that truly excites you.”

Binance Becomes First Crypto Exchange to Secure a Global License Under ADGM Framework, Setting a New Standard in Digital-Asset Regulation

0

Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume and users, today announced a landmark regulatory achievement: The Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA) of ADGM, the international financial centre of Abu Dhabi, the Capital of the UAE, has formally approved the authorisation of Binance’s global platform, Binance.com, under a comprehensive regulatory framework.

This global first is a major step in Binance’s mission to create the most trusted and compliant digital-asset ecosystem in the world. A license granted by FSRA of ADGM offers Binance credibility and seamless access across multiple markets, extending well beyond the UAE, and cements Binance’s position at the forefront of regulatory progress in digital finance.

This comprehensive regulatory approval covers Binance’s global platform, Binance.com, via three separate regulated entities operating within ADGM. Each of the three entities (an Exchange, a Clearing House, and a Broker Dealer) holds distinct regulatory permissions to carry out specific financial services activities in line with ADGM’s internationally recognised, gold-standard regulatory framework.

  • Nest Services Limited (to be soon renamed “Nest Exchange Limited”) has been approved as a Recognised Investment Exchange “RIE”, with permission to operate a Multilateral Trading Facility. This entity is responsible for all “on-exchange” trading activities, including spot and derivatives products.
  • Nest Clearing and Custody Limited has been approved as a Recognised Clearing House “RCH”, with additional permissions to provide custody and CSD services . It will manage the clearing, settlement, and secure custody of digital assets, ensuring robust operational resilience and asset protection.
  • BCI Limited (to be soon renamed “Nest Trading Limited”) has been approved as a Broker-Dealer, with permissions to deal in investments, arrange deals in investments, manage assets, arrange custody and provide money services. This entity will deliver Binance’s “off-exchange” offerings, including over the counter “OTC” trading, conversion services, and other principal-based activities.

Richard Teng, Co-CEO of Binance, commented: “Achieving regulatory status through ADGM’s respected framework reflects our deep commitment to compliance, transparency, and user protection. ADGM is one of the most respected financial regulators globally, and holding an FSRA license under their gold standard framework shows that Binance meets the highest international standards for compliance, governance, risk management, and consumer protection.”

Teng added, “This license provides regulatory clarity and legitimacy, enabling Binance to support its global operations from ADGM. While our global operations remain distributed, leveraging talent and innovation worldwide, this regulatory foundation offers our users peace of mind knowing Binance operates under a globally recognised, gold standard framework. We are grateful for the FSRA’s forward-thinking approach, which safeguards users while fostering innovation.”

His Excellency Ahmed Jasim Al Zaabi, Chairman of ADGM, said, “We are pleased to welcome Binance, a key global player in digital assets and financial innovation, to ADGM. Their presence underscores Abu Dhabi’s standing as a leading international hub for innovation, sustainable growth, and the future of finance. We look forward to seeing them harness the strength of ADGM’s progressive regulatory framework and dynamic ecosystem contributing to the evolution of a more innovative, inclusive, and future-ready global financial sector.”

With over 300 million registered users globally and more than $125 trillion in cumulative trading volume, Binance continues to lead the evolution of the digital asset ecosystem by building a secure, transparent, and fully compliant infrastructure. Operating under ADGM’s robust financial services regime ensures all Binance users benefit from high standards of oversight and consumer protection as the platform scales into its next phase of institutional and retail adoption.

Subject to final operational preparation, Binance.com will start operating its ADGM regulated activities on Jan 5, 2026. This milestone cements Binance’s position at the forefront of regulatory progress in digital finance. It also reinforces the UAE’s emergence as a global hub for innovation in financial services, supported by clear regulatory pathways and a deep talent base.

The Lab Challenges Culture-Shaping Brands to Grow a More Conscious Future

0

There’s something oddly radical about growing a plant upside down. It disrupts what we think we know about growth, and asks us to trust that potential isn’t fixed. That spirit is at the heart of CANGRO and Chaeli’s Upside-Down Tomato. This year, The Lab is joining the movement and expanding its mission of care into the gardens, classrooms, and inner worlds of children across South Africa.

In a video shared this week, The Lab’s Founder Jo Farah publicly challenged Adidas, Sportscene, FOM, and New Balance to participate in the initiative. “This isn’t a competition between brands,” he says. “It’s a collective opportunity to invest in the next generation. Our industry influences culture. It’s time we use that influence to spark real change.”

A Challenge That Feels Like Childhood Should

Chaeli’s Upside-Down Tomato sees learners receive a young tomato plant housed in a recycled container (often a repurposed paint tin), its roots held in soil while its stem threads down through a small opening. The plant grows toward the light, defying gravity.

The challenge turns classrooms into micro-gardens of possibility. Sleeves roll up. Soil gets under nails. Questions unfold. Why upside down? Will it survive? What happens if I miss a watering? And slowly, something begins to shift. The project becomes a living curriculum and a life lesson about community, care, and patience.

“This initiative is everything we believe in made tangible,” says Farah, “Children deserve to feel what real agency feels like; to hold a container that once was waste, grow something from it, and realise that sustainability isn’t abstract. It’s alive. It’s theirs. And they can shape it.”

Where The Lab Meets the Garden

For The Lab, a company redefining care through biotechnology and social responsibility, this initiative feels like a continuation of its philosophy. The brand’s ethos speaks to a worldview centred on the belief that how we tend to the things we love shapes how we tend to the world itself.

In a sense, upside-down tomatoes and biotechnology-driven fashion care share a common thread. Both challenge old habits. Both honour the value of longevity. Both ask, “What if care is the most transformative tool we have?”

What started out as a crazy idea 13 years ago has become a challenge welcoming learners and corporate partners across the country. For many learners, it may be their first time growing anything. For others, it becomes the first time they feel they can teach something to siblings, parents, or peers. The harvest is symbolic but its impact is real.

This year, The Lab’s involvement aims to open even more doors. By calling on other culture-shaping brands to join, The Lab is reframing sustainability education as a shared responsibility. Corporate partners who step into the challenge help widen access for disadvantaged and disabled learners, ensuring the initiative remains inclusive. Because the hands that learn to nurture a recycled paint tin into a thriving plant are the same hands that will one day shape a more conscious future. And that is the future The Lab believes in.

How NIVEA is redefining digital beauty for a mobile, evolving South African consumer

South Africa’s beauty consumer is changing in clear and meaningful ways, and NIVEA South Africa is adapting its e-commerce approach to meet this shift. People are more mobile, better informed and increasingly comfortable making skincare decisions online. E-commerce hasn’t replaced the traditional beauty journey. It has expanded it by offering convenience, education and personalised guidance in one place.

NIVEA South Africa forms part of Beiersdorf, whose global skincare expertise supports the digital experiences NIVEA delivers locally. For Beiersdorf, this shift has created a powerful opportunity to rethink how skincare is discovered and supported in a world where routines move with people. Whether someone is preparing for a long-haul flight, escaping to the coast or adjusting to different climates between cities, digital touchpoints now help keep their skincare consistent and reliable.

A mobile-first consumer is reshaping skincare discovery

With more affordable data and widespread smartphone use, South Africans are starting their skincare journey online. Before ever reaching a shelf, they compare ingredients, read reviews, watch tutorials and look for products suited to their needs, including those linked to travel.

This shift has shaped how NIVEA shows up online. By expanding its digital range and improving product content with clear, helpful information, the company ensures consumers can make confident decisions from their phones. In a world where movement such as daily commutes or seasonal trips is constant, accessible digital guidance has become essential.

Reintroducing personalisation into digital beauty

More than ever, consumers want personalised advice, even when shopping online. They want reassurance that the products they choose truly match their skin type, concerns and the environments they may encounter, such as dry cabin air, coastal humidity or intense sun.

Beiersdorf is helping bring this reassurance back by applying digital tools that support meaningful personalisation. AI-driven tools now offer quick and accurate guidance that helps consumers understand their skin and select products that suit their needs. What once required an in-store consultation can now happen during a moment of browsing or comparison.

For NIVEA, technology is a way to extend human expertise, not replace it. By translating dermatological insight into clear digital guidance, the company makes personalisation feel intuitive, even on the smallest screens. This expertise helps NIVEA give South African consumers guidance that feels clear, credible and useful.

Building the foundation for seamless online beauty

South Africa’s e-commerce growth is still in its early stages, but the pace is rapid. Consumers are more confident, and digital shopping is becoming a natural part of how people buy beauty essentials.

NIVEA is supporting this shift by strengthening online availability, improving supply consistency and designing formats that suit real lifestyles, including travel-friendly products that fit easily into changing routines. When logistics and consumer needs align, e-commerce becomes more than a channel. It becomes part of the everyday ritual.

As beauty, travel and technology continue to overlap, the opportunity is to create online experiences that are fast, reassuring and grounded in genuine expertise. People want convenience, but they also want guidance they can trust. The brands that deliver both will succeed. NIVEA is committed to finding this balance. By combining decades of skin science with evolving digital tools, the company is shaping experiences where expertise travels with the consumer, not just the product. When digital builds confidence rather than replacing connection, e-commerce becomes more than a transaction. It becomes a companion to the journey, wherever that journey leads.

The December reset: why unplugging now means stronger teams in January

0

Across South Africa, countless people will spend Christmas Eve juggling work messages between dinner courses, replying to Whatsapp’s while wrapping gifts, or checking emails before their families open presents the next morning. It is a familiar scene that perfectly captures how blurred the line between work and rest has become.

If this scenario resonates, your organisation isn’t alone, but it is contributing to a crisis that’s reaching breaking point. Recent research reveals that 82% of employees are at risk of burnout in 2025, marking a significant escalation from previous years. In South Africa and globally, nearly three in five workers are facing moderate to high burnout, with mental and emotional stress cited as the primary culprit by 63% of respondents.

December, traditionally a time for rest and renewal, has instead become a pressure cooker of digital overload. The festive season amplifies everything: more spending, more socialising, more expectations and critically, more screen time. Rather than offering respite, the holiday period now extends our always-on culture into our period of rest. This in turn creates a downward burnout spiral as we enter the new year in an increasingly frazzled state.

The neuroscience of digital exhaustion

Understanding why digital detox matters requires looking at what’s happening in our brains. The average person makes around 300 distinct scrolling actions per day, with each swipe potentially triggering a dopamine response. Social media platforms and workplace communication tools are engineered to keep us engaged, exploiting our brain’s reward system.

In South Africa, people spend an average of three hours and forty one minutes scrolling through social media daily. Even more concerning is the phenomenon of “doomscrolling”, which is excessively scrolling through social media. While this behaviour activates dopamine release in the brain, creating a feedback loop that keeps us scrolling, it simultaneously fuels depression, anxiety and mental fatigue. We’re caught in a neurological trap: seeking the pleasure response while absorbing content that depletes us. When that is combined with office burnout, it creates a perfect breeding ground for fatigue, exhaustion and poor mental health outcomes.

For employees already navigating year-end deadlines, performance reviews, and personal festive obligations, this constant digital engagement becomes unsustainable. The brain never gets the downtime it needs to process, restore, and prepare for the year ahead.

The business case for disconnection

Forward-thinking organisations are beginning to recognise that employees who are genuinely able to unplug during the holidays return in January with improved focus, creativity, and productivity. They sleep better, experience less anxiety, and bring renewed energy to their roles.

Teams that remain tethered to their devices throughout December start the new year already depleted. The cost manifests in higher turnover, increased sick leave, diminished innovation, and reduced organisational performance throughout Q1 and beyond.

Practical interventions that work:

Companies can create structures that make disconnection both possible and acceptable:

Establish clear email-free windows: Designate specific days during the holiday period as completely communication-free. No emails, no Slack, no “quick check-ins.” Make this a company-wide policy, not an individual choice.

Model behaviour from the top: Leadership must visibly disconnect. When executives send emails at midnight on Boxing Day, they signal that availability is expected regardless of official policy. Leaders should schedule emails to send during working hours in the new year rather than hitting send during their own off-hours.

Set explicit expectations about availability: Remove ambiguity. Tell employees directly: “You are not expected to check or respond to messages between 20 December and 3 January.” Then honour that commitment by not contacting them.

Create transition protocols: Ensure adequate handovers are completed before the break so no one feels they’re abandoning urgent matters. This removes the anxiety that drives people to check in “just in case.”

Encourage genuine rest. Share resources on digital wellbeing. Remind teams that rest isn’t just physical, it’s cognitive and emotional. Suggest practical steps like removing work apps from phones temporarily, setting devices to grayscale mode to reduce dopamine triggers, or establishing daily phone-free hours.

Beyond December: Building a Culture of Digital Health

At YuLife, we believe wellbeing is a year-round commitment. Our approach recognises that employee health encompasses multiple dimensions including physical, mental, and digital. Each affects the other. You cannot have genuinely healthy, engaged employees if they’re chronically overstimulated, sleep-deprived from late-night scrolling, and unable to disconnect from work demands.

The festive season offers a natural inflection point to reset workplace norms around technology. The organisations that seize this opportunity, actively protect their people’s ability to unplug, rest, and reconnect with what matters beyond screens will enter 2026 with teams that are not just rested, but genuinely restored and productive.

In a hyper-connected world where being “on” has become the default, intentional disconnection is an act of wellbeing. It’s time companies recognised this—and made it possible.
