NIQ Retail Spend Barometer shows SA consumers are getting relief from less load shedding but are still taking strain from higher prices

0

South African shoppers spent a total of R181 Billion on FMCG in the second quarter (Q2) 2024, representing a 4,8% uplift compared with the same period last year. The Tech & Durables (T&D) market, meanwhile, remained virtually unchanged from the same period last year at a value of R31 billion for Q2 2024.

This is according to insights from the NIQ Retail Spend Barometer which combines data from NIQ and GfK to measure the turnover in sales of FMCG and T&D goods purchased in stores across South Africa. Newly launched in South Africa, the Barometer provides a comprehensive overview of sales trends to guide brand and retailer strategies.

The Barometer tracks food, perishables, home and personal care categories in the FMCG sector and the technical consumer goods, household appliances, and DIY and home improvements categories in the T&D sector. The study, based on real sales data, analyses big data across both categories and will be published each quarter.

Nikki Quinn, Retail Lead for sub–Saharan Africa at NIQ and GfK, said: “Two themes dominated retail behaviour during Q2 2024: the cash-strapped consumer’s continued struggle with the high cost of living and a pause in Eskom load shedding. Across, the board, we saw consumers hunt for bargains and switch brands and stores to save money.”

Fresh and frozen foods sales lifted by reliable power supply

NIQ data shows that value growth for the FMCG sector dropped from 7.2% in Q2 2023 to 4.8% in the same quarter 2024, despite a boost in consumer confidence and a drop in inflation from 5.4% in 2023 to 5.1% in 2024. All categories experienced lower growth year-over-year, except for tobacco.

The fresh food, frozen food and personal care categories experienced the most robust growth, growing at 8.2%, 9% and 8.6% respectively. Meanwhile, homecare, snacking, beverages and ambient food saw a significant drop off in growth versus Q2 2023 as consumers reprioritized their spending.

“Perishable goods were one of the big winners for the quarter, with consumers spending more on fresh and frozen foods due to a more reliable power supply,” says Quinn. “However, persistent inflation, particularly food prices, remained a deep concern for consumers. People are focusing on the basics and keeping their eyes open for specials and promotions.”

T&D remains flat

The T&D market overall experienced lower growth than in Q2 2023, dragged down by price deflation and lower revenues in the telecom segment. Large screen televisions (74” and above) outperformed, selling unusually well for the category outside the Black Friday and festive season windows.

In Q2 2024, home appliances saw a significant turnaround with an 11.3% increase, compared to the 6.1% decline in Q2 2023. However, it is important to note that soft growth in 2023 was due to the market normalising after strong gains in the pandemic when consumers invested in their homes.

Major appliances, especially washing machines and refrigeration, saw double-digit value growth. Small appliances like air fryers, along with food preparation and hair stylers, also contributed significantly. With average selling prices remaining flat, growth is attributable to higher unit sales.

Technical Consumer Goods remained nearly flat in Q2 2024, following slight growth in Q2 2023. Routers, desk computing, monitors, gaming consoles, and mini/Bluetooth speakers showed significant growth, while core wearables, headphones, and smart mobile phones declined.

“Promotional activity helped to drive growth in the appliances and TV segments,” says Quinn. “Confidence about South Africa’s load shedding situation may also have helped to inspire consumers to upgrade appliances. While spending remains constrained by stagnant wages and unemployment, we see some bright spots for the T&D sector.

“Hopes for interest rate cuts later this year could help to reignite consumer confidence. The introduction of the two-pot system for retirement funding might also serve as a tailwind ahead of Black Friday and the festive season. Early withdrawals of pension funds under the two-pot system are expected to boost household expenditure in the second half of 2024.”

Futureproofing your finances against unexpected medical expense shortfalls

0

When you are young, it is easy to take your health for granted, and as a result, it is also easy to overlook the importance of having the right medical and gap cover in place. However, accidents can and do happen to everyone, and having the correct cover in place ensures you can more affordably access quality private healthcare when you need it and safeguard your financial future against unanticipated medical expenses. As you age and your life stage changes, this becomes even more important. It is essential to work with your financial advisor to futureproof your cover and your financial and physical wellbeing.

Change is inevitable

As you age and you move through various stages of life, your financial and medical needs change, including starting a family and experiencing the onset of age-related illnesses and chronic conditions. In addition, the market and the medical and gap cover products that are available also change. The way medical schemes provide cover in particular is always evolving, and doctors and specialists are frequently charging many times the scheme rate for their services.

In today’s world, there are more medical expense shortfalls, co-payments, and sub-limits than ever before. Many medical aid schemes and plans also have networks of Designated Service Providers (DSPs) and impose financial penalties if you make use of specialists or facilities outside of the network. No matter how young or healthy you are, medical issues can arise, and they can disrupt your current and future plans, including your financial ones, if you have not carefully considered your cover.

Seek the help of experts

Unanticipated medical expenses and shortfalls can have a significant impact on your financial wellbeing, especially if you have just had a baby or you need to tap into your retirement savings to pay for them. However, when it comes to choosing the right cover, the decision can be complex. There are numerous medical aid schemes and plan types available, each offering different levels of cover for varying premiums.

There is also a growing number of gap cover products on the market, and it can be difficult to sift through the options and choose the most appropriate one for you. To ensure adequate cover and financial protection, you need to have the right medical aid aligned to your requirements of both affordability and health needs. Then, you need to select a gap cover product that aligns with this medical aid, with the understanding that your needs and budget will change over time. It is also important to consider waiting periods and restrictions in cover, additional cover like casualty benefits, and the reputation and ease of claims processing of your gap provider.

Brokers and financial advisors are available to assist in navigating this complexity. Working with an expert who takes the time to understand you, your family, your life stage, and your financial situation is important to ensure your financial and health planning meet both your current and future needs. Additionally, because the market and your life are always changing, reviewing your cover on an annual basis is an essential step. Your broker is an invaluable asset in helping you make an informed decision not only for your current needs but for your future as well.

Braaied and Prejudice

0

Ah, the braai —a word that stirs the heart of every South African! More than just a cooking method, the braai is a tradition, a ceremony, a moment where we gather around the flames to celebrate heritage and togetherness. But here’s the thing: not all braais are created equal. We’ve evolved beyond the classic ‘chuck a chop on the fire’ mentality, and now there are rival braais vying for the spotlight. It’s time to talk about the four contenders of what I call the “Braai Prejudice“, and whether a knockout side salad might help level the playing fields, or not.

In one corner, we have the Meat Braai: the undisputed champion of the fire pit. It’s got history, it’s got fans, but is it really the only true South African braai? Then, there’s the Veggie Braai, still fighting against the odds to prove its worth on our grilling grids. Lurking in the wings is the elegant Fish Braai, often overlooked in Gauteng and the Free State, but filled with delicate flavours that meet the demands of any table in any province. And let’s not forget the brave newcomer: the Gluten-free Braai. Trying to carve out its own place in our hearts (and stomachs) without the usual suspects of bread and marinades.

For me, the true test of a braai’s worth relies on the worthiness of its salad compatriots. Not every salad is the right fit for every braai contender – which is why I’m sharing four of my guaranteed side wins, just in time for a braailicious Heritage Day.

  1. The Meat Braai – The Classic Contender

We start with the Omkhulu of the braai: the meat braai. This is the one everyone knows and loves, the traditionalist’s choice. Boerewors, steak, lamb chops—just thinking about it makes you want to grab your tongs. But even the reigning champion needs a worthy companion to elevate the experience. Enter my trusty, tangy chariot: Fennel and Radish Salad. The fresh pop of anise, and the crunch of the fennel, paired with the tangy bite of radish beautifully cuts through the richness of the meat, offering a refreshing counterbalance of flavour at the poolside. I love this salad for a meat braai particularly, as it’s delicate and light against a lambchop backdrop, adding a layer of sophistication to any table.

  1. The Veggie Braai – The Underdog

The veggie braai might be considered the underdog in some parts, but it’s on the rise. It’s for the plant-loving, eco-conscious braai enthusiasts who want to embrace the fire without sacrificing their veggies. A classic braai purist might scoff at the idea of aubergines and peppers sizzling on the grid, but here’s where things get interesting. Since the salad comes standard at these veg fests, why not choose to add a side of pineapple kebabs, as a sweet starter or even a yummy dessert. My Charred Pineapple Kebabs can be served tapas-style, or as dessert, with bursts of basil on the stick. Pretty to look at, delicious to pick at. The caramel twist inside the sweet and smoky flavour of the grilled pineapple is a game changer, offering a burst of tropical goodness that complements those grilled vegetables. A true contender in its own right, you’ll silence even the most sceptical of carnivores.

  1. The Fish Braai – The Quiet Sophisticate

The Fish Braai is like the quiet sibling at a rowdy family gathering—elegant, understated, and often overshadowed by the big-mouth meat braai. But when done right, a fish braai is an absolute showstopper – for meat lovers too. Let’s be honest, lightly grilled snoek or fresh-caught Cape bream drizzled with lemon and herbs will make you think you’ve braaied and gone to heaven. But to really let those delicate fishy flavours shine, you need a fresh, crisp salad to go with it. That’s why my top pick here would be my take on a zippy Cucumber slash Pickle Salad. Made with dill – and a whole lot of love – this cucumber side hustle is lettuce free, and time saving too – as it can be made well ahead of time. Healthy. It’s simple and refreshing—a perfect match for the ocean catch!

  1. The Gluten-Free Braai – The Newcomer

Finally, we have the rebel kid on the block. Some might say this kind of braai lacks in braai decorum.  Nonsense, I say. Whilst a newer addition to the braai scene, the Gluten-free Braai is often misunderstood and underappreciated, but just as deserving of a place at the table. With careful planning, gluten-free braais can offer as much variety and excitement as their counterparts. Think grilled chicken skewers, veggie parcels, and yummy buttered mielies. But, the key to really making it sing is asparagus and strawberry. Yes, together, in a salad. This salad is a genuine hit, from the sweet-tartness of the strawberries to the lemony crispness of the asparagus, tied together with red wine vinegar and spinach leaves, every other dietary requirement will have its fair share of food envy.

And there it is: four braais created equally. Whether you’re a meat lover, a veggie devotee, a fish fanatic, or a gluten-free warrior, the beauty of the braai actually lies in its diversity – and in the true spirit of our South African heritage, there’s always room for everyone (and every side) around the fire.

What to expect from visa processing for your December break

0

Planning a Kiwi Christmas? Then you’d better get cracking on booking your flights and sorting your visa. The New Zealand Immigration Department has advised travellers to submit their tourist visa applications at least two months before their planned trip, especially during the peak summer season.

“We expect to see a significant Christmas backlog for New Zealand visa applications, which is why the proposed visa application deadline for Christmas travel is 15 October, and 15 November for New Year and Chinese Lunar New Year,” comments Lynette Machiri, Customer Experience Leader at Flight Centre Travel Group South Africa.

“Sadly, applications submitted later than these dates might not be processed in time. Additionally, travellers must be aware of increased visa fees from 1 October, increasing from NZD211 (R2 315) to NZD341 (R3 740),” she adds.

approved-stamp-visa-and-passport-document-to-immigrate

This predicted backlog has many South African travellers booking their end-of-year escapes well in advance, knowing that New Zealand isn’t the only destination where they’re likely to run into visa hurdles.

Read on for Flight Centre’s visa-related advice for some of Saffers’ top December holiday picks.

  1. The UK

The best time to book your flights to the UK and get the visa process started is at least six weeks before your departure date.

At the time of writing, UK visa applications were taking up to four weeks to process from the date of the biometric appointment. Luckily, it’s relatively easy to secure an appointment within a week or two, and priority options are available.

  1. Australia

Just to be safe, it’s a good idea to get the visa process started at least four to five weeks before travelling to Australia.

After paying your Australian visa fee online, you have 14 days to provide your biometrics. If you miss this deadline, your application will be rejected, and you’ll need to reapply and pay again.

Remember that your visa application processing only starts after you’ve attended your biometrics appointment, and it can take up to 10 working days to process from there.

  1. UAE

Dubai is currently high on South Africans’ radar and, thankfully, one of the most hassle-free destinations for which to obtain a visa. The processing time for single-entry visas is currently up to seven working days and up to 10 working days for multiple-entry visas.

  1. Canada

There’s a significant backlog regarding visa processing for travel to Canada, taking 224 days on average from the date of biometric collection. With that in mind, while it’s a bucket list destination for many South Africans, it definitely isn’t worth attempting to holiday in Canada this year. Give yourself at least eight to nine months ahead of your travels to ensure all necessary visa processing can be factored in.

“Many of December’s leading destinations are popular particularly because South Africans are travelling to visit friends and family in addition to enjoying a well-deserved break. As a result, these destinations can’t be replaced, which is why planning well in advance is essential,” cautions Machiri.

That said, there are other options if visas stand in the way of your reunion. As emigration continues, savvy South African travellers are turning to visa-free destinations like Bali and Thailand as affordable, accessible meeting points to spend time with loved ones scattered across the globe. Swapping pricey London trips for adventures in Turkey with UK relatives is a great option, as is enjoying a tropical Mauritian getaway with Aussie family members.

“These destinations offer excellent value and convenience. It’s a win-win for South Africans who want to connect with loved ones without breaking the bank or navigating complex visa processes. As the world becomes more interconnected, these creative solutions highlight the resilience and resourcefulness of South Africans,” comments Machiri.

Visa-free gems

Unsurprisingly, most South African holiday favourites are visa-free, including Singapore, the Maldives, Thailand, Bali, and Zanzibar. Of course, Mauritius is the ultimate beach-bum paradise, according to Saffers – it’s always number one on the local list of top international holiday hot spots.

The added benefit is that many visa-free destinations promise convenience and affordability.

“The rand is currently stronger than the Indonesian rupiah, the Tanzanian shilling, and the Thai baht, which means greater affordability even when travelling during the peak holiday season,” says Machiri.

And don’t forget about the magic of South Africa itself! With our beautiful coastlines, wildlife, remote escapes, and bustling cities, exploring your own backyard offers a seamless and equally rewarding holiday experience. Consider a road trip along the Garden Route, a safari in the Kruger National Park, or a wine-tasting tour in Stellenbosch.

Whether your December dreams involve tropical beaches or reconnecting with loved ones, December holidays offer a chance to escape, recharge, and celebrate. Plan ahead, be flexible, and enjoy the journey as much as the destination. Happy travels!

Leaping to the Edge: AI Driven Transformation in Telecoms

0

As businesses increasingly adopt edge computing for real-time processing and decision-making, the ability to run AI at the edge is becoming imperative. With decades of experience in AI development and deployment, Dell Technologies is ideally positioned to reshape how enterprises harness its potential.

It is clear that edge computing has emerged as a strategic paradigm shift in the world of data processing. Unlike traditional centralised cloud computing, edge computing brings computation closer to the data source – whether it’s a fleet of cars, automated industrial machines, drone, or autonomous vehicle. It’s like having a mini data centre right where the action happens. IDC reports worldwide spending on edge computing is expected to reach $232 billion in 2024, an increase of 15.4% over 2023; and by 2027 62% of enterprises’ data will be processed at the edge. With this, edge locations are becoming ideal for not only collecting and aggregating local data, but also as input for AI processes.

A further IDC forecast shows that enterprise spending (which includes GenAI software as well as related infrastructure hardware and IT/business services) is expected to more than double in 2024 and reach $151.1 billion in 2027 with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 86.1% over the 2023-2027 forecast period.

AI at the edge is a transformative leap for industries, with the ability to offer unparalleled benefits such as real-time responsiveness, privacy compliance, cost efficiency, and edge autonomy.

The telecoms sector stands out as a prime beneficiary of this technological revolution. The South African telecommunications market is expected to show an annual growth rate of 2.41%, resulting in a market volume of $17.6 billion by 2028. There is growing interest in the telecoms industry on how best to leverage AI to generate business growth.

Here are some of the benefits telecoms providers can unlock by seamlessly integrating AI into their edge infrastructure:

  • Latency reduction: By bringing data processing closer to its source, AI algorithms deployed at the edge can prioritise essential tasks such as real-time video streaming or gaming. This localised processing effectively slashes latency, ensuring a smoother and more responsive user experience.
  • Network optimisation: AI algorithms deployed at the edge can help enhance network optimisation by efficiently analysing network traffic patterns, predicting congestion points and dynamically rerouting traffic. This approach not only enhances network performance but also ensures optimal utilisation of resources, resulting in improved reliability and seamless connectivity for users.
  • Enhanced security: Through the integration of edge AI, telecoms networks can further use algorithms to protect their security infrastructure by swiftly detecting anomalies and neutralising potential threats at the source. By embracing enhanced zero-trust principles and processing data locally at the edge, telecoms providers can significantly enhance data privacy and security, ensuring robust protection for users.
  • Energy efficiency: Sustainability and lowering energy costs are top of mind for almost all telecoms operators. With this, AI stands to play a pivotal role in network energy efficiency – especially at the edge in usually unstaffed locations. By leveraging AI and machine learning to gain insights into equipment usage patterns, operators can automate energy management processes and optimise energy consumption at edge locations.
  • Predictive maintenance: By harnessing the natural language processing (NLP) powers of GenAI, telecoms operators can greatly improve network troubleshooting. AI can swiftly identify irregularities, slashing troubleshooting durations from days or hours down to mere minutes. This accelerated response not only minimises downtime but also results in substantial cost savings for operators, enabling them to allocate resources more efficiently and maintain optimal network performance for users.
  • Diversified services and revenue opportunities: With AI-ready infrastructure at the edge, telecoms operators are also able to introduce novel and innovative services that address specific customer needs and preferences. By capitalising on their strategic positioning to deliver inferencing services at the edge, telecoms operators can offer rapid, personalised and contextually aware solutions to customers. This not only enhances user experiences but also opens avenues for additional monetisation, driving sustained growth and competitiveness in the telecommunications market.

As telecoms operators continue to embrace the edge ecosystem, the transformative potential of AI at the edge will not only be advantageous but imperative in navigating the future of modern networks. AI is expected to redefine the telecoms landscape and permeate through the entire network stack, presenting unique opportunities for telecoms operators to unlock new possibilities. From intelligent automation to predictive analytics and personalised experiences, edge AI ushers in a new era of innovation, enabling operators to chart a course towards unparalleled growth in the digital age.

In South Africa, the first priority is to accelerate customers’ journey to AI. To do so, we are offering our customers a free test environment where we will work with you to build a proof of concept around your specific AI requirements.
