Samsung Solve for Tomorrow 2024 Finals

0

The Samsung Solve For Tomorrow (SFT) Competition has now reached its Final stage and the electronics giant in collaboration with the State Information Technology Agency (SITA) and the Department of Basic Education (DBE) will host the Winner Announcement Ceremony at AHA Kopanong Hotel & Conferencing in Benoni on Wednesday, 02 October 2024.

In an effort to recognise and celebrate the work done by the participating schools, Samsung took the time to speak to both learners and teachers from four finalist schools that entered the competition this year. The aim of the conversation was to ascertain how these participants felt about being part of the contest, how their experience has been and how their preparations were going before the prototype presentation in October. A crucial stage that would determine which school would end up walking away with the ultimate prize; and this is what they had to say:

Nomfundo Manqele, a learner from Adams College in KwaZulu-Natal expressed how thrilled she was to be part of the finalist schools. However, from time to time she did experience a bit of anxiety and a roller coaster of emotions when she was reminded just how big the competition was. Nomfundo mentioned that it was both an incredible and hectic experience for both the teachers and learners as they all learnt new things, every day.

She also admitted to the fact that they also faced many challenges along the way, but overall, it was an affirming experience. Nomfundo added by saying: “Preparations for our final prototype are currently underway and coming along quite nicely. Although, we have encountered many challenges in this journey, we somehow found a way to persevere. In spite of the challenges, I am certain that the win is coming to KZN considering the effort we put into crafting our masterpiece.”

To date, we’ve learnt quite a lot in this competition and one of the lessons that stands out for us and one that we will forever hold onto is that: “In life, if you want to go far, go together. Nothing beats working well as a team and having a great leader that will lead you to victory through healthy competition and teamwork.”

Nomfundo’s words of encouragement to schools that haven’t yet entered the contest are: “This is a really challenging contest that requires hard work and dedication, so always bear that in mind. However, in a competition arena, resilience separates winners from the rest. There are no winners or losers, only learners – nothing more, nothing less.”

Amyoli Resha, a grade 11 learner from Khwezi Lomso Comprehensive School at Zwide township in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape said: “Entering the Samsung SFT competition and even becoming a finalist makes me feel very ecstatic.

“This competition and this milestone has brought a sense of pride, considering the fact that we are the only school in the Eastern Cape to make it to the Top 20 & Top 10, we definitely embody the spirit of the Home of Legends.”

He added that it has been quite a wonderful, yet very challenging experience. From the start of the programme, their team has enjoyed a great deal of support from the entire school and its faculty. And this unwavering support is what got the team through all the challenges they faced during the process leading up to where it is today.

Amyoli confidently said that the preparations for the prototype were going quite smoothly. “The team is not in panic mode because we were told that the final product may take some time to materialise into perfection. However, by the look of things and the confidence we possess – the team is more than convinced that we WILL definitely Bring the Win Home,” he added.

Above all, the competition has taught the whole team from Khwezi Lomso – the importance of teamwork and believing that their combined proposals and ideas can actually make a large impact. Amyoli then called upon all schools to enter this competition so that they can unleash their learners’ potential because this contest will give them the opportunity to advance and explore their imaginations.

Zandile Sonandze, a teacher also from Khwezi Lomso Comprehensive School in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape said that she’s very excited because they didn’t think that they could get this far in the competition, especially as a new entry. She said that, as an educator, the entire team’s confidence has been boosted enough to enter other competitions. “When we first entered the SFT competition, we didn’t even think that we would be selected for the first round, but look at us now,” Zandile exclaimed.

According to this enthusiastic teacher: “This experience has been exciting and overwhelming at the same time, because everything had to go as planned. Our learners are also excited to be in the Finals and for the opportunity to fly to Johannesburg. Our educators and the entire school are also cheering for us – they are all very proud of how far we’ve come.”

Zandile also explained that the preparations are not yet 100%, and that there are still some finer details they are trying to wrap-up in an effort to help the team to win the competition. However, she said that they are trying their best to be as creative as possible – the team is now just hoping for the best. She has also taken the time to encourage other schools to enter the competition as this has been an eye opening experience for their entire school.

Phume Unarine, a learner and group leader from Thengwe High school located in the Limpopo Province said that she’s very happy and looking forward to what the finals have in store for them. For Phume and her team, this has been one of the most interesting and exciting experiences that the learners, teachers and their whole school has participated in.

“The preparations for our prototype went according to our plans,” Phume added confidently. “We’ve faced every obstacle that came our way with the full support of our mentor whose support has been crucial to us reaching this stage of the competition. I have confidence in my team and I’m convinced that we’re going to come out victorious.”

During this competition, we learnt that people aren’t the same and their differences are what makes them unique. She added that she learnt that teamwork is not only about being part of a group and that a great leader is made by the motivated people around him or her. I’d like to advise other schools that have not yet participated in this contest to take a leap of faith and enter because this will help them discover more knowledge and open them up to new experiences that they wouldn’t be able to get anywhere else.

Makhosazana Mazibuko, a learner and team leader from Mandisa Shiceka School of Specialisation in Gauteng appreciated being part of the SFT competition and found the contest to be a very exciting experience that she thoroughly enjoyed. She also saw this as an opportunity to improve her community. For Makhosazana, the competition was full of research and helped their team members to create lasting bonds. As far as preparation for the prototype presentation is concerned, she said: “It’s going very well, we are productive and are dealing with our trial and errors very well. Our idea involves one of the basic necessities in our community and is unique, so I’m very confident that we will win.”

During this competition, Makhosazana believes that she learnt how to be patient, how to “turn down” ideas and how to be a better leader. Overall, she’s learnt to be kinder and more understanding with circumstances, peers, adults and above all herself. She also feels that her presentation skills have improved and that she’s gained more confidence, in herself and her intellect.

And lastly, Nonki Bridgette Motlogelwa, an educator from Mandisa Shiceka – a Gauteng-based Maths, Science & ICT School of Specialisation, with a focus in mining and manufacturing said: “As a new entry, I feel so honoured and grateful to be part of the competition. Over the last few months, we put in so much effort into our idea and to know that it is being appreciated – has truly made us feel on top of the world. Now, we feel like we can do anything as long as we put our minds to it.”

Nonki expressed how proud and blown away she was by the learners from her school. She explained how they have shown so much courage, creativity and teamwork, a clear indication that they are heading in the right direction. During the competition process, the learners started feeling the pressure but fortunately they pulled through and decided to do hydroponics. This technique involves growing plants using water-based nutrient solution rather than soil.

When it was announced that the school is in the top 10, the entire school was so happy, this has motivated other school learners to want to enter next year. Having a Samsung mentor as well, she believes, made this challenging experience much easier, because she was able to guide the team through.

For Nonki, the overall experience was amazing and thought-provoking. She also confirmed that their preparations for the prototype presentation are going well, the learners are putting their all and their teamwork is superb. The learners were also able to alternate themselves in terms of building the prototype and preparations for the final presentation.

Nonki is encouraging learners from other schools who have not yet participated in this SFT competition to always take chances and believe in themselves, because the future is in their hands. “Because all the learners have the brains and creativity, its important to let them shine and show the world that every individual deserves an equal opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background or circumstances,” concluded Nonki.

Why tourism plays such a huge role in South Africa

0

With World Tourism Day coming up on Friday 27 September, it is important to look into the state of tourism in South Africa, how it is performing, and what it means for South Africa as a whole.

The below article, bylined by various spokespeople from different organisations including Kruger Gate Hotel, Relate Bracelets, and Radisson OR Thambo , provides insight into why tourism plays such a crucial role in South Africa.

I would love for you to please share this with your readers. Let me know if you need anything else, thanks!

Why tourism is such a big player in South Africa

The theme for World Tourism Day 2024 is Tourism and Peace, and rightfully so with the amount of negativity and ongoing tension in the world right now. The pursuit of peace is a continuing endeavour, and progress through tourism is more relevant than ever.

Tourism can play a vital role as a catalyst for fostering peace and understanding between nations and cultures and in supporting reconciliation processes. Tourism also plays a critical role in sustainable economic growth and job creation, thus helping to garner a sense of pride, accomplishment and unity among South Africans.

Expansion is needed

“Tourism already plays a massive role in the South African economy, but that role could be significantly bigger if a couple of key issues could be addressed collaboratively between government and stakeholders in the tourism and hospitality sector,” says Anton Gillis, CEO of Hospitality Asset Management Company (HAMAC).

“Specifically, the capacity on inbound flights – we need more flights and especially more direct flights between major international destinations and South Africa. Furthermore, visa requirements for South Africa need to be critically assessed and systems put in place to make the process simpler and more cost effective. The unemployment rate in the country is sitting at around 32% and we know that more tourists mean more jobs, so removing the barrier – such as this visa issue – should be top priority.

“Tourism Month needs to be – above all – an opportunity for ongoing dialogue and debate on the measures, policies and vision needed to grow the sector to the benefit of far more South Africans,” says Gillis

A tool for sustained change

Tourism plays a crucial role in the growth of economies around the world – contributing to Job creation, the strengthening of communities, the development of infrastructure and the conservation of the environment. At its core, investment into tourism creates much needed awareness around deeper, pressing issues faced by countries.

Relate Bracelets, a 100% NPO, recognises the importance of tourism as a tool for driving sustained change. In an effort to do their part, the organisation has partnered with many beneficiaries such as Elephants Alive, Ikamva Labantu, The Amy Foundation, Blind Loyalty, and so much more who do incredible work on the ground in South Africa to support conservation efforts as well as local vulnerable communities.

“South Africa’s vibrant landscapes, diverse cultures, and rich history offer something extraordinary to every traveller. But the true magic lies in how we, as custodians, use tourism as a powerful force for good. From safeguarding our incredible wildlife to empowering young people in under-resourced communities, we have the responsibility—and the privilege—to drive meaningful change. Every visitor, every story shared, and every action taken helps build a brighter, more sustainable future for all,” says Dalit Shekel, CEO of Relate Bracelets.

Bridging social and cultural gaps

“We have seen that tourism fosters inclusivity and unity by creating opportunities for people from different cultures, backgrounds, and regions to interact and engage in meaningful exchanges. It celebrates diversity by showcasing unique cultures, traditions, and perspectives, which promotes understanding, tolerance, and respect for others,” says Dominique van Wezop General Manager at Radisson Hotel & Convention Centre, Johannesburg, O.R. Tambo Airport.

“By connecting individuals from diverse backgrounds, tourism helps bridge social and cultural gaps, breaking down stereotypes and fostering empathy. Moreover, it plays a crucial role in economic empowerment by creating jobs and opportunities, particularly for marginalised communities, thus promoting both social and economic inclusion.”

According to Wezop, the shared experiences that tourism offers—whether through travel, cultural festivals, or interactions with local communities—unite people around common interests and create a sense of belonging.

“Tourism also helps to facilitate cultural exchange, which enables the transfer of ideas, knowledge, and traditions. This, in turn, enriches societies and fosters a broader global perspective that embraces diversity and cooperation,” she concludes.

Consumers have the right, and choice, to improve their finances

0

Debt counselling is a proven, effective way for consumers in financial difficulty to get help and, although more are choosing it as their preferred way to repay debt, many misconceptions remain.

According to the National Debt Counsellors’ Association (NDCA), there are currently over 250 000 South Africans who have chosen to use debt counselling to improve their finances in the long term, with monthly new applications around 12 000 to 15 000. These monthly applications emanate from many more inquiries each month, the majority of which end up with debt counsellors providing free advice to consumers which assists them to manage their finances without debt counselling.

The 250 000 consumers who are in debt counselling repay some R15 billion to creditors annually. The industry is facilitated by a world-first and only-one-of-its-kind payment distribution system that allows for efficient collection and distribution of the repayments, 90% of which goes directly to pay down consumer debt. In other countries, the debt repayment mechanisms are not as efficient and only 60-70% of collected amounts end up towards paying down consumer debt.

Debt counselling is responsible for around 10,000 direct jobs in an important ecosystem that includes lenders, debt counsellors, credit bureaus, PDAs, technology providers, legal practitioners, regulating bodies, and others.

Since 2008, over two million South Africans have chosen debt counselling, as enshrined in the National Credit Act, as the method to repay back their debt.

“Despite this, education about debt counselling from financial services institutions has been non-existent since inception,” says NDCA chairman, Benay Sager.

He says this is unfortunate as some of what’s being said about debt counselling needs to be clarified:

  • Debt counselling is for “debt re-organisation in cases of over-indebtedness” as articulated in the National Credit Act. This means anyone facing or about to face difficulty in paying back credit could apply for debt counselling.
  • Almost all consumers in South Africa are multi-banked, so behaviour with one institution cannot be extrapolated: they may be up-to-date with accounts with one institution, but that does not mean they are up-to date with accounts with other institutions.
  • Debt counselling is voluntary, and the record is expunged once the process is completed.
  • The costs are built into the programme. Over ninety per cent of what gets paid back goes to lenders and credit providers.

The NDCA recommends that consumers considering debt counselling:

  • Check if the debt counsellor is registered on the National Credit Regulator database: www.ncr.org.za/register_of_registrants/index.html
  • Ask if they are a member of a credible professional body or association.
  • Confirm with the debt counsellor that they are using one of the four registered payment distribution agencies: these are Hyphen Technology, DC Partner, Intuitive, and CollectNet.
  • Ask them to explain the process, how long it will take and what client-service support they provide.
  • Sign up only after a full, free assessment is done.

A detailed checklist can be found here: https://www.ndca.org.za/articles/check-out-the-checklist-before-choosing-a-debt-counsellor/

Sager says the debt counselling sector in South Africa is world-class, with the number of people receiving their clearance certificates since 2016 increasing tenfold.

“Consumers have the right to choose a method to repay debt. It is a choice enshrined in the Constitution and the National Credit Act. Debt counselling is an effective way to do this because it costs less than alternative methods. In fact, debt counselling is the most pro-consumer option to repay debt for responsible consumers who are unable to do so currently because of their financial circumstances.”

How a Cape Town Therapist uses play therapy to make mental health care accessible

0

From treating attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to helping adults manage stress, Cape Town-based therapist Sue-Lee Henning uses an unexpected tool in her therapy sessions: fidget toys.

Henning shares her approach on social media, drawing from her professional experience to highlight how fidget toys can be both therapeutic and calming. Her goal is to raise awareness and encourage others to incorporate this playful, stress-relieving tool into their everyday routines.

“Fidget toys can be highly beneficial in counseling, as they provide a tactile outlet for managing stress, anxiety, and restlessness,” Henning said. “I’m glad to see that people are gradually recognizing the role of play therapy in promoting relaxation and emotional regulation.”

Play therapy can be effective but may become costly. To keep mental health resources affordable, professionals like Henning are turning to online marketplaces such as Temu to source tools like fidget toys. By allowing consumers to buy directly from manufacturers, Temu offers a cost-effective option, helping ensure that essential mental health tools remain accessible to people of all income levels.

Cape Town-based therapist Sue-Lee Henning

Helping kids cope with ADHD

One of Henning’s early patients to benefit from play therapy was a teenager living with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

At first, she struggled to get him to open up and talk to her. “He just could not sit still,” she says.

This changed when she let him play with a toy drum set in her office. Once he was able to keep his hands busy, he was not only having fun but he finally found it easy to speak to her for the first time in three sessions. “It was mind-blowing to me,” she said.

Speaking about trauma is difficult and overwhelming, according to Henning. That’s why creating an environment where patients can relax is essential. The repetitive motion and sensory stimulation from toys can promote relaxation and emotional regulation, making it easier for individuals to engage in the therapeutic process.

She would start each session by sitting on the floor with her patients and if they’re curious about the toys, she lets them pick one to play with.

The most popular toys in her practice have one thing in common: they were discovered on Temu, as Sue-Lee shares on her social media profile. From novelty decompression cubes, keychain fidget toys and plush squeeze toys, these toys are in high demand from those who come to her for mental health help.

“I shop on Temu at least once a month to get toys and office supplies among others,” Henning shared.

Being able to get these items on a user friendly and secure app, gives her the peace of mind she needs to be there for her patients when they desperately need her.

Play therapy not just for kids

Play therapy also helps adolescents and adults too. Henning uses social media to share tips on breathing exercises and mindfulness to guide people through stress and burnout.

As an adolescent mental health specialist, she recognises that teens don’t really come to sessions by choice so they have their guard up in her sessions.

Although many people believe that fidget toys are only useful for children, she began to try handing some of the toys to her teenage and adult patients in order to make the therapy more effective.

“Playing with toys gets them to lower their defences and be receptive to my guidance. This new discovery surprised me and made me even more aware of the help of play therapy.” Henning said.

fidget toys

Over time those struggling with anxiety find it easier to cope in therapy and thanks to fidget toy, they can cope at home or school if they feel distressed again. This is also one of the reasons that have prompted her to share these toys and where to purchase them on LinkedIn and Instagram, so that people with anxiety can buy them on their own.

“Coping strategies don’t have to be major,” she reminded us. For adults, it can be as simple as singing your favourite song on the way to work. This is a distraction and breathing exercise that can get your brain in a good mood for the day.

Online marketplace comes in handy

The wide and affordable range of toys available on online marketplaces like Temu allows Henning to make play therapy an effective tool for her patients without stretching her budget. Even when she isn’t present, patients leave her sessions with strategies to cope in the real world.

“I should own shares in Temu at this point,” she laughs because many of her office decor personal items are sourced from the app.

Among her favourites are storage containers, curtain ties and decorative items for the office.

At the end of the day, it’s all about creating an inviting atmosphere for her patients to feel comfortable enough to unwind and unburden themselves from the stress they’re carrying.

AI-tools are smart, but human creativity is smarter

I’m a huge fan of AI and the benefits it brings to daily life. We often don’t even realise we’re using AI, like when I use Spotify DJ to create a playlist based on my music preferences, or when Waze suggests a faster route home based on real-time traffic updates.

New AI tools are constantly being developed, and their use cases are rapidly increasing. I recently read that South Africa has the most ChatGPT users globally, which is great, but also concerning as it highlights both the growing interest in AI technology and the potential challenges around digital literacy, data privacy and the ethical use of these tools.

I’m by no means an AI expert, but I do know that we need to understand this technology beyond its surface-level convenience. While AI has the power to transform industries and make our lives more efficient, it also comes with challenges in terms of data security and transparency. We need to be aware of how the data we’re inputting in AI platforms is being used, who has access to it and the long-term implications of sharing personal information with these platforms.

We also need to consider how it affects skills development and ultimately employment. As more tasks become automated, we have to focus not only on upskilling but reskilling our teams to integrate AI into what we do, instead of letting it take over.

This has led to the development of a new set of policies and guidelines for companies. For example, companies need to develop an “Ethical use of AI” policy that outlines best practices for ensuring transparency and accountability when using AI. Another one is a “Data privacy and AI” policy, which ensures sensitive information is protected when using AI tools and platforms.

My work requires me to read and write a lot. Whether I’m proofing a news release, editing a messaging document, or writing an opinion piece like this, I need to ensure everything makes sense, is grammatically correct and is clear enough for the target audience to understand in context.

With the rise of platforms like ChatGPT, everyone now has access to AI tools, whether as a basic user or a paid subscriber. The platform is undeniably clever. When I first started using it for editing and proofing, I was blown away and thought, “Wow, this is amazing.” However, as I continued to use it more frequently, I noticed that the output often followed a predictable formula.

Some tell signs that something has been created by ChatGPT specifically include

  • Default to American English (see all those z’s)
  • Three adjectives to describe EVERYTHING – she’s smart, funny, and amazing
  • The Oxford comma after the last ‘and’ – she’s smart, funny, and amazing
  • The use of the words ‘foster’ and ‘seamless’
  • The words ‘cutting-edge’, ‘excited’, ‘best practice’, ‘furthermore’, ‘invaluable’, ‘reshaping’ and many others
  • Did I mention ‘foster’?
  • Headlines and sub-headlines that are capped and have a colon to separate two ideas: The Ethical Use of AI: What To Look Out For

While AI can be really helpful, especially for repetitive tasks, it still needs a human hand to ensure originality and realness. AI-generated content lacks the subtlety and emotional tone required for certain audiences. I believe this is where a combination of AI and human input is non-negotiable. Use AI to enhance your work, not to do everything for you. Let it assist with efficiency, while you provide the creativity, there’s no replacement for this after all.

NETSCOUT SYSTEMS, INC. (NASDAQ: NTCT), a leading provider of performance management, cybersecurity, and DDoS attack protection solutions, today announced enhancements to its nGenius Enterprise Performance Management solution, which includes a new notification centre that helps streamline and automate alerts and contextual workflows to identify and resolve problems faster. Secured Reliable Transport (SRT) was added to support live video streaming, and additional supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) protocols were added to support international utility networks.

Performance degradations, application unavailability, and lengthy outages can have a crippling effect on any business. Organisations need to ensure their users have the best experience possible by avoiding performance issues that can threaten their reputation, mission, and revenue. NETSCOUT’s nGeniusONE notification centre focuses IT efforts on the most critical business issues to investigate by categorising alerts for services, applications, servers, and links/locations, providing contextual, actionable, real-time details at a glance.

“NETSCOUT’s new notification centre streamlines and automates alerts and contextual workflows to identify and resolve problems faster,” said Mark Leary, research director, Network Observability & Automation, IDC. “This is a huge win for IT teams as it enables them to deliver a better end-user experience while giving them more time to focus on other strategic digital transformation initiatives that provide greater business value.”

Vertical Market Additions for Critical Infrastructures

NETSCOUT’s Visibility Without Borders platform already supports any application anywhere, including hundreds of voice, video, and business data applications in key industries. This new specialised service monitor for the SRT application enables network broadcast engineers to observe where and when live video degrades so they can quickly resolve issues and ensure quality performance. According to recent research, the global video streaming market will grow at a CAGR of 18.7%, reaching $2.66 billion in 2032. SRT is quickly becoming the industry standard for secure, reliable, and low-latency video transport.

NETSCOUT has also incorporated two additional SCADA protocols to better monitor and control generation, transmission, and distribution for international utility networks. SCADA is a business-critical operations technology essential for power distribution and management. SCADA systems play a critical role in preventing, detecting, and restoring power outages and help improve and support the safe distribution of electricity.

“Our customers value how nGeniusONE uniquely addresses real-time visibility and observability needs,” stated Phil Gray, associate vice president, product management, NETSCOUT. “With this significant update and support for new mission-critical applications, we’re providing IT teams with even more time-saving functionality to make it easier to address critical infrastructure performance issues, see problems before they impact the business, and continue to provide a high-quality user experience.”
