How to make business travel fun again

If your mid-year diary shows less Zoom and more meetings across the globe, don’t feel alarmed if the prospect fills you with more anxiety than anticipation.

Deloitte reported in 2022 that although corporate travel in 2021 saw a slow and steady upturn, business travel still remained at around 10% of pre-Covid numbers. Then suddenly, 2022 arrived. Deloitte’s 2023 Corporate Travel report showed that business travel grew two-fold in just 12 months. While business travel’s return is exciting, it doesn’t mean travellers are 100% ready to spring back into their pre-pandemic routine and start clocking up air miles!

Travelling for business can seem much more stressful (and exhausting) today because it takes us out of our newly established routines. However, according to a July 2022 GBTA survey, 85% of business travellers stated that they need to travel to accomplish their business goals … which means we have to make it easier on ourselves. You can do this by:

Planning ahead

“Having a travel management company (TMC) or travel consultant in your corner will take away at least half the stress of wondering if you’re dotted all the i’s and crossed all the t’s,” says Bonnie Smith, GM Corporate Traveller. “From ensuring you have the necessary visa, entry permits and other documentation to ensuring that you don’t have to worry about navigating the route from the airport to your hotel in a strange city, never before have travellers needed more expert assistance.”

Happily, companies have become much more conscious about whether a trip is really necessary. This means a lot of groundwork is done virtually and by the time you need to hit the road, solid plans should be in place and a good foundation laid.

Re-establishing connections virtually first

While there was a time when virtual meetings left us muted, we’re now very comfortable with virtual platforms. Use that to your advantage. Reduce the nervousness of meeting strangers (or those you haven’t seen in a long time) by scheduling some virtual meetings to touch base first and break the ice before meeting them again in person. Not only will your first in-person meeting then be much more comfortable and enjoyable for both parties, but you can reduce some of the ‘anticipatory’ stress.

A 2022 Forbes Health survey, conducted by OnePoll, revealed that 59% of respondents find it harder to form relationships post Covid, compared to just 13% of people who find it easier. Additionally, 62% of respondents reported feeling anxious about the thought of socialising with strangers. The message? You’re not alone if you’re feeling a little socially awkward.

Clustering your meetings

Be strategic with your time away. Cluster as many meetings as you can in one destination/region in order to maximise your time – avoiding non-essential trips wherever possible.

Building-in downtime

Experts agree that it’s a mistake to think we can just ‘bounce back’ to the same level of business travel we did prior to a global pandemic without any effects.

Simply put, we’re not used to it yet and in many ways, we’re now smarter and more strategic with our time and how best we perform.

Filling your diary with back-to-back meetings and heading straight into an important meeting the minute you get off an overnight flight is, at least for the average individual, not always the best for one’s mental health and wellbeing. Of course, it does boil down to personal preference and that’s where your travel manager comes in – they’ll learn how you prefer to operate.

Perhaps you function best in the morning and would like all your important meetings over by noon – or you’d rather catch up on emails and work at your hotel before heading into afternoon strategy sessions.

But whatever your preference, recovery time is vital. Ensure you have enough time to get a good night’s sleep, adjust to jet lag if needed and just relax and catch your breath. And to make it fun? Have a list of things you’d love to see and do while away – after all, a fun, happy trip is also a more productive one.

Getting outdoors

Wellness remains a top priority both in the office and on the road. Increasingly, hotels that offer travellers the chance to hit the wellness reset button will come up tops. Look out for accommodation options that allow you to get in some wellness time – whether it’s in an outdoor garden, on a walking trail, in a yoga studio or an on-site gym.

Adding a dose of joy

What brings you joy? Consciously bringing in moments of joy can transform any business trip. The days of business travel only involving you seeing the inside of a conference room should be long gone. Build in time to sit in a trendy coffee shop, visit a museum or art gallery – and don’t feel guilty about excusing yourself before the official evening activities to get in a little sightseeing.

Exploring bleisure opportunities

Chat to your organisation about their approach to ‘bleisure’ (combining business and leisure trips) as adding on a day (or two) pre- or post-trip is a great way to up the fun factor!

Being kind to yourself

Don’t expect yourself to operate at the same pace you did pre-pandemic. The world has changed. The travel landscape has also changed, and as Smith explains, business travel is dynamic, changeable and exciting. Lean on the experts, build plenty of time into your trip (avoid both tight connections and long layovers where possible), and add a little joy back into travelling for work!

Finding adventure through words and trails-Moira Molefe

Lifestyle and Tech team had a pleasure of sitting down with Moira Molefe a mother, hiker and blogger who has explored breathtaking landscapes, conquered challenging terrains, and shared her extraordinary experiences with the world through her blog

LNT: To begin, could you tell us a little about yourself and how you embarked on your journey as a hiker and blogger?

MM: I am a mother of 3 teenagers, a full-time employee, and a person who loves life and fun. In 2018 a good friend of mine invited me to a beautiful place and said we are going hiking so that we can catch up. I said to myself- Moira How on earth are you going to hike in the woods if you’re afraid of anything that crawls?  Against my judgment, I agreed because I was missing my friend and wanted to catch up with her. I drove into the parking lot of Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens in Roodepoort (South Africa). The place was breathtaking.

LNT: How did you first get into hiking, and what made you fall in love with it?

MM: While we were hiking, I realized something was happening inside me. I was feeling so light and fresh yet am climbing. I let myself sit in that feeling so that I can understand what was going on with me. I felt at peace, refreshed and I thought to myself, maybe just maybe this can be a regular thing. I fell in love with it when after a few hikes with friends and realized this is good for my body, mind, and soul. Life is difficult as is, one must find ways of recharging and letting go of adversities. The more I hiked the more it felt like am on a mini holiday every time am climbing those mountains. I get to see places that one wouldn’t just get into the car to go see. I am seeing the other side of our country, it is beautiful. I also get to meet like-minded people on these trails, the conversations are the best.

LNT: What inspired you to start a blog about hiking, and how has it evolved over time?

MM: As time went by, I thought it would be nice to share my experiences with the world, and the only way I knew how was through blogging. The idea was to take my readers through that exact experience I went through while they are in the comfort of their own homes. Let me tell you, it has evolved more than I would have thought it would. First, for many years I always told myself that I cannot write, there is no way I can write. Guess what, over a year later, I continue to blog and share my humble experiences on my blog.  By no means I am claiming to be the best, but I have proved to myself time and time again that, you can do anything you put your mind to.

LNT: Could you share one of your most memorable hiking experiences and why it was so special to you?

MM: There are so many, I have been hiking since 2018. However, the special moment that stands out was my first-time hiking in the beautiful Drakensberg, KwaZulu Natal Province.  It was my birthday weekend and I decided to test myself and see how far I can push my physical and mental strength. It was a two-day hike, we were traveling with the organizers of the hike and we met new people as we traveled in one bus. That was an experience on its own. You see when I go hiking, it starts from the moment I wake up, I take it all in I am present throughout. It’s not about the hiking trail only, it is the whole experience. The road trip was amazing, like-minded people in our bus, it was fun and cold. I write in detail on my blog about this experience. Believe it or not, I am afraid of heights as well. One of the trails we hiked required that we climb the ladders to be able to go to the top of the mountain. This was the highlight of the hike because, on the other side of those ladders, it was the famous Tugela fall, the world’s tallest fall. I was terrified of climbing those ladders, but I did it. Everyone was cheering me on, It felt so good to test my limits.

LNT: What are some essential items you always carry with you when you go hiking, and why are they important?

MM: Water, more water, proper hiking boots (protect your ankles), a hiking stick is your best friend, especially on tough hikes, and lastly snack(my favorite part). Do not forget that camera to capture the moments.

LNT: How do you choose the hiking trails you write about on your blog, and what factors do you consider?

MM: I try to hike every second Saturday. Myself and my hiking friends, We always enjoy visiting new hiking locations, but I choose where we should go. I love going to different spots it’s fun, and of course, I get to blog about it.

LNT: do you hike alone or do you have hiking friends

MM: I hike with friends, my long-time friends, and the ones I made through hiking. I would advise that people shouldn’t go hiking alone, besides not being safe to be in the woods alone, where is the fun being around nature alone?

LNT: what is the name of your blog and how did you come up with that name?

MM: Fabtastic  Cute story behind the name of my blog. It was Mother’s Day, my son must have been 6 at that time. He wrote me a Mother’s Day message that said ” Happy Mother’s Day mommy you are fabtastic. I thought to myself wow, what a beautiful word to describe me. I have never heard of the word before. I told his Dad that I love this word, and one day I will use it for something that I will create.

LNT: Have you ever faced any challenges or obstacles while hiking, and how did you overcome them?

MM: Yes, when hiking tough long trails. Your mind tells you that you are tired but there is nothing you can do except to keep going because you have no choice but to walk until you get to the finish. You cannot turn back, no other way but through. To me, that is a test of ability and willingness to keep going because it’s beyond the hike. I apply the experiences in my day-to-day life. Those tough moments teach me something that helps me in my life.

LNT: What do you hope your readers take away from your blog posts about hiking?

MM: everything is possible if you put your mind to it. The benefits of being out there with nature.

LNT: Are there any particular hiking destinations or trails that are on your bucket list, and why?

MM: Too many to mention all, however Mount Meru in Tanzania, Whale trail in South Africa, Gotemba trail in Japan, and Hikers’ Haute Route Switzerland &France

LNT: what message or advice would you like to share with our readers who may be aspiring hikers or fellow nature enthusiasts?

MM: Just take that leap of faith, you might love it or hate it, at least you tried then move along onto trying something new. I never thought I will hike but here I am.

LNT: do you have anything else to ad

MM: every morning when we wake up, we are given two things; A chance and A choice.

Samsung announces the winner of the #MyBespokeChallenge

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa  Samsung announced the winner of the Bespoke Home Challenge, closing the curtain on the interior design competition that ran from October 2022. Zwelibanzi Nzuza’s design took the honours after seeing off stiff competition from his three fellow finalists. Zweli, as he’s affectionately known, won a cash prize of R100 000 that will help him kick-start his interior design career and propel him into his future of creativity.

Coming all the way from Kwa-Zulu, Zwelibanzi’s design philosophy is based on vision, inspiration and a leap of faith. He is very adventurous in his designs and often looks at results that inspire people beyond the norm. What sets him apart is his willingness to explore, expand himself in every project and produce something fresh at all times. “I perceived a high-spiritedness in the Bespoke fridge, which is the centrepiece of the design. That inspired sophistication and playfulness in my approach and I tried to use that as an anchor and a common thread in everything else in my space. I wanted something warm, welcoming, relatable, easy on the eye, and not overbearing or intimidating,” said Zwelibanzi.

Maresa Maartens – Won second place in the Bespoke Home Challenge

For the first time, Samsung opened the Bespoke Home Challenge to young designers. The challenge was made to encourage the creators to design an integrated kitchen and living room space with the Bespoke Refrigerator as the centrepiece of their space. Being in a class of its own, the Samsung Bespoke Refrigerator range brings a kaleidoscope of colour, innovation, and unparalleled customisation to life.

The four finalists had to each put their best foot forward and do their designs at the new Samsung Lifestyle store at Design Quarter in Johannesburg. The other finalists were:

  • Maresa Maartens (Gauteng) – Won second place in the Bespoke Home Challenge and walked away with R50 000 cash prize. Maresa was adamant that when designing, it is important to create rooms that feel like sanctuaries, where people can find ease of use, comfort, durability and low maintenance, she believes in design solutions and spaces that make users feel good mentally and physically and want to slow down.
  • Keneilwe Mothoa (Gauteng) – Inspired by African heritage and culture and marrying this with modern and western inspirations. Her designs are based on African research and focus on the history for the future. She designs for both functionality and aesthetics, capturing all the senses: touch and feel to name a few.
  • Mbali Maseko (Gauteng) – Mbali believes that going forward design should be minimalistic with a touch of Africa. She would like to add a touch of Africa to any beautiful, personal and Bespoke home.

The challenge focused on up-and-coming young designers and was a way to give them a unique platform to test their skills and an opportunity to design and give their own interpretation of a perfect Bespoke Home. After being identified for the final round at the end of September 2022, the four finalists had a chance to showcase their creativity and skill at the brand new Samsung Lifestyle at Design Quarter.

Media entrepreneur and International Speaker, Jo-Ann Strauss, who formed part of the judging panel, said the bar had been raised in this edition of the competition. “Samsung is renowned for always going big in everything they do and it is exciting to see that the My Bespoke Home Challenge competition was no exception. It’s amazing how this competition has grown bigger and better. It is such an excellent platform for young up-and-coming designers and I’m proud to be part of it for the second time. A competition like this is important to celebrate what the young designers learn as it prepares them for the real world and the work environment. The designs of all four finalists were absolutely beautiful and made it tough for the judges. I was particularly impressed by how the contestants brought their own personalities to the fore through their designs. I also enjoyed hearing the personal stories from the contestants about their individual journeys and we all thoroughly enjoyed Zweli’s personal story.”

Zweli said he is over the moon at being crowned the winner and takes it as a reminder that he is on the right track in terms of following his passion and love for interior design. “This is like a dream. Never in a million years would I have imagined I would win such a competition. I have learned a lot more than I thought I would in this competition. I feel grateful and absolutely humbled by the entire experience.  The fact that my family is also here to celebrate with me makes it extra special. I will be investing the prize money towards realising my dream and growing my business,” said Zweli.

“The My Bespoke Home Challenge competition is Samsung’s effort to invest in young designers and youth as part of our design and concept store. These post-COVID times have highlighted the importance of our personal spaces and the role they play in our overall wellbeing. A rewarding mission for team South Africa

, has been bustling with activity as hosted buyers engaged with the South African exhibitors discussing potential opportunities for hosting meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) in the country.

With a clear goal to attract more events to South Africa, the South Africa National Convention Bureau (SANCB)’s sales team has been busy conducting pre-scheduled meetings with buyers at the show. As a result of these meetings, the team has acquired a number of leads promising high-yield and great returns. As part of the work of the SANCB team, these leads will then be converted into bidding opportunities for the destination.

On the show’s first day, the SANCB team also hosted a targeted dinner engagement with 30 clients from various parts of the world, as part of increasing networking opportunities.  These clients were selected as they are important decision-makers for associations and corporate conferences, meetings, and incentives that take place globally. They were selected based on potential business opportunities for the destination over the next five years.

“There is magic in face-to-face connections and engagements. This is why the COVID-19 pandemic was so devastating to our sector. Bespoke networking events where we get to attentively understand client needs are so important,” says Zinhle Nzama, Acting Chief Convention Bureau Officer at South Africa National Convention Bureau, a business unit of South African Tourism.

During the engagements, amongst the numerous leads, the SANCB generated a significant lead for an international medical conference. This conference typically draws 1500 attendees and has an estimated economic value of R48,000,000. As a result, and in a significant step, next year the conference’s Professional Conference Organiser (PCO) will attend Meetings Africa to conduct site inspections for the event.

During the three-day trade fair, at IMEX Frankfurt, the SANCB team also held engagements with various clients planning already-secured business events that are now in the pipeline for South Africa over the next year or two. These meetings took place in order to provide the necessary assistance for these organisers to host successful conferences in true South African style.

One of these meetings was with a UK-based organiser who will bring an international medical conference in South Africa in September. The conference attracts 700 delegates with an estimated economic impact pegged at close to R18 million. Over and above the economic impact, the conference will include various legacy programmes focusing on key areas of need for the South African medical sector.

“Attracting conferences like this to South Africa assists with creating a lasting impact in key areas of need and showcases our country’s world-class expertise in different sectors. The impact of the team SA’s effort at IMEX Frankfurt, therefore, goes beyond just securing business events and delegates.  Their efforts positively impact various other economic sectors and the economic development of the country,” concludes Nzama.

Robtronics/Dunoworx and Cell C partner to shape futures with skills learnerships

This collaboration marks a significant milestone in driving technological advancements and revolutionizing workforce development.

As leading specialists in mobile device repairs and replacements, Robtronics/Dunoworx, is passionate about upskilling our country’s youth. This commitment was evident when the second intake of enthusiastic candidates recently embarked on an intensive 12-month Robtronics/Dunoworx Learnership Programme which will empower them to become fully qualified Mobile Phone Repair Technicians.

The skills programme is made up of well carved out modules facilitated by experienced engineers and industry moderators. Once the modules are completed the learners are placed within various parts of the business to gain practical experience.

Course modules also cover skills such as entrepreneurial skills, customer service, front desk management, personal grooming, sales skills and customer communication skills to ensure that they leave the course fully equipped and employable.

Robtronics uses their expertise in reverse logistics to ensure maximum efficiencies are consistently achieved. Led by a management team that applies their collective 45 years of experience, coupled with the effective use of sophisticated systems, Robtronics manages all variables in the after sales aspect of handset / mobile device repairs, cell phone replacements and service. It is this collective expertise which is being imparted to the students who have been selected to take part in this Learnership Programme.

Candidates who successfully completed the first inaugural Robtronics/Dunoworx Learnership Programme have been successfully employed.

Sizwe Phungwayo, who was one of the inaugural group of learnership candidates, had this to say of the opportunity: “I am so appreciative for the opportunity granted to me to partake in the Robtronics / Dunoworx 12-month learnership programme which focuses on empowering youth like me, by facilitating skills development in telecoms. It has been a great honour to be a part of this learning experience as it has carved a path for my career that has begun to take shape. I have learned a great deal and made solid life-long connections along the way. Now that I have completed the programme, I have managed to secure employment as a Junior Technician in handset repair for Samsung, a leading brand manufacturer in tech worldwide.”

Requirements for Learnership Applications

Candidates must meet the following criteria to apply for the Learnership Programme:

  • Aged between 18-28
  • South African citizenship
  • Valid Matric certificate
  • Must be able to read and write English
  • Provide a valid bank account
  • Must have a SARS tax number
  • Submit a recent CV
  • Preferably be vaccinated

New One UI 5 watch shows first look at upcoming Galaxy Watch

The new software is designed to bring an even more personalised and intuitive health experience and includes enhancements that support better sleep — an often neglected yet essential part of overall wellness — as well as various fitness and safety features.

Better Sleep: Essential to Better Health

Samsung has focused its efforts on three key elements for better sleep: understanding personal sleep patterns, building healthy habits, and establishing a sleep-friendly environment. One UI 5 Watch delivers on these elements with an even more complete sleep experience.

The new Sleep Insights UI prominently displays the user’s sleep score to provide a clearer snapshot of the prior night’s rest, followed by related metrics like sleep phases, snoring hours and blood oxygen levels. In addition, Sleep Coaching — tailored around eight different sleep types[2] — also becomes fully accessible directly on Galaxy Watch as well as a paired phone, making for a more convenient and motivational way for users to track their habits anytime, anywhere.

Creating a comfortable environment can make all the difference in sleep quality, and even small distractions can have outsized impacts. That’s why Samsung has made it easier to connect Galaxy Watch to a wide range of devices. Once the user’s Galaxy Watch detects that they have fallen asleep, SmartThings lets the user switch off their connected devices to create a more conducive environment for rest. Sleep Mode swiftly mutes notifications and dims the user’s phone and watch screens, and One UI 5 Watch builds on this feature by now utilising an infrared sensor rather than a green LED light to further minimise distractions.

A Smarter Fitness Partner

Personalised Heart Rate Zone has been added to Galaxy Watch’s various tailored running tools — including real-time running analysis and a customised interval training program. This new feature analyses individual physical capabilities and sets five optimal workout intensity levels (warm-up, fat burn, cardio, hard-training and max. effort). This enables users to set their own goals based on their ability, from burning fat to high-impact cardio.

Outdoor activity enthusiasts with Galaxy Watch Pro can look forward to additional benefits, starting with an expanded Route Workout—which now supports running and walking alongside previously available hiking and cycling route options. Galaxy Watch Pro users can also search and access the GPX File Database directly via Samsung Health app, and receive recommendations on new routes based on inputs like location, time, rating or popularity.

Safety First, Always On

Safety is a must when it comes to health and wellness, and One UI 5 Watch also offers improved tools for greater peace of mind. Updates to the SOS feature enable direct communication to an emergency telephone number to relay information on the wearer’s location, and also allow immediate access to the wearer’s Medical Information once an SOS is activated. In addition, Fall Detection is now activated by default for users of advanced ages to help lower the risk of emergencies. These are just some of the examples of Samsung’s ongoing efforts to enhance user safety.

One UI 5 Watch will be available first on the upcoming Galaxy Watch series later this year with further updates to be announced soon.

Availability of the features may vary by market, carrier, model and the paired smartphone. The features are not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions, or in the cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease.

For sleep pattern results, user must wear watch while they sleep for at least 7 nights and complete a survey.

After 10 minutes of running, Galaxy Watch calculates Personalised Heart Rate Zone based on VO2max and aerobic/anoxic thresholds.

Available on a paired smartphone. The selected route can be viewed on their watch.

To notify an emergency contact, a network connection is required. GPS accuracy may be affected by obstructions to the satellite signal, such as buildings.

Aged 55 or older. Based on the age registered in Samsung Account.
