Dondo Mogajane Steering the Moti Group through its strategic transition

Dondo Mogajane, CEO of the Moti Group

22 May 2023: Changes in leadership often mark a significant turning point for companies. Each new leader brings a fresh perspective and a unique management style, inevitably introducing shifts in internal structures, business strategies, and even the company’s external image. Irrespective of the company or industry, its legacy or reputation, such changes are integral to fostering growth and innovation.

A change in leadership is not without its complexities. Notably, the Moti Group has faced substantial criticism in the media for running a widespread public relations campaign intended to realign our group’s external image with its internal restructuring and new vision.

It is important to keep in mind that a company is never just one person. It is a complex collection of many people from disparate backgrounds, each with unique ideas and capabilities. A CEO is charged with determining the overall direction of the company, but each person helps determine how that vision is finally attained.

Throughout my storied career in finance and governance, having served as Director-General of the National Treasury, and having helped to shape the country’s financial policies, I developed a profound understanding of the complexities that companies face, as well as the needs of our regulatory environment to ensure sound and unimpeachable business practices.

As I transitioned from the public to the private sector, I was driven by a desire to actuate change, foster innovation, and support community and youth development across Africa. My journey led me to the Moti Group – a company that aligned perfectly with my aspirations of creating a leading black-owned business recognised around the world.

I made it clear to our internal and external stakeholders, from my first day as CEO, that I intended to bring about companywide change and, effectively, reposition the group in the wider market. The group and its management team welcomed the changes I envisioned.

Repositioning a brand around a new CEO, however, can be complex and filled with pitfalls – especially for a company such as ours that has faced its share of reputational challenges.

Communicating our internal changes has therefore been vital to ensuring widespread stakeholder buy-in and restoring trust in the market. Revealing a shift in focus has allowed our company to act with transparency, strengthen relationships with customers and partners, and address reputational concerns proactively and authentically.

To accomplish this, we have utilised paid-for marketing and public relations initiatives to articulate our company’s evolving narrative, highlighting our vision, progress, and commitment to stakeholders, reinforcing its position in the market. Despite insinuations made by determined critics, these efforts have not been secret – which is why we have focused on some of the biggest and most respected publications in the country.

To proudly publicise our new direction and leadership, we have taken out multiple paid newspaper advertorials and advertisements, conducted multiple on-air interviews, shared new social media posts and vlogs, and erected a few billboards.

This is not uncommon for companies looking to reimagine and reposition themselves. In fact, it has been the norm for company transitions around the world over for decades. It is industry standard to make a large public relations and marketing push in announcing any sizeable company changes, and to leverage the public and media’s interest.

The Moti Group is on a new path, and we have enjoyed sharing the news of our ground-breaking initiatives, which has been met with extremely positive feedback. To those critics who have maligned our efforts, I would like to emphasise that I am working closely with all management to chart a new course for our business. There are thousands of employees who are dependent on us for their livelihoods, and we firmly believe that we can create a positive and lasting legacy for the benefit of current and future generations.

Looking ahead, I’m excited about the journey that the Moti Group is embarking upon. With the collective expertise and dedication of our employees and partners, and mutual respect between the group and the media, I am confident that this transition will be an ongoing success. We envision a future that not only reflects our aspirations for growth and innovation, but resonates with the communities we touch throughout Africa.

Entries close on 16 June 2023 and the winner will walk away with the coveted title of South Africa’s Boerewors Champion and a brand-new Toyota Fortuner 2.4 GD-6 RB MT valued at
R650 000.

“Winning the competition was an incredible experience. I didn’t think I’d win at the first try. Now I know that nothing can stop me from achieving what I want, not even my age,” says Welcome Magoso (24), last year’s winner.

“I would encourage anyone with a good recipe to give it a go because it might change your life. My friends have been asking me for advice about how to enter and I hope they do.”

Launched in 1992, the competition has attracted boerewors makers from all walks of life over the past three decades.

The winning boerewors will be available for purchase at Shoprite and Checkers stores nationwide. “The best part of winning the competition is seeing people purchase and enjoy something I created,” confirms Welcome.

The competition will be judged by a panel of culinary experts from the South African Chefs Association (SACA). All recipes will go through a validation process and must adhere to the guidelines for making traditional boerewors. Once validated, the judges will shortlist 30 recipes before narrowing them down to the top 10 finalists.

Shoprite and Checkers will then invite the top 10 finalists to a special event where they will prepare and cook their boerewors for the judging panel. The winner will be declared on the same day and will walk away with incredible prizes and the esteemed Championship Boerewors maker title for the year 2023.

When media discourse becomes a one-sided debate

Zunaid Moti

Freedom of speech is fundamental to any functional democracy, enabling media to perform its vital role as watchdogs in the public interest. But there are always two sides to every story, and for freedom of speech to be effective, media discourse cannot be reduced to a one-sided debate.

In a world where public opinion can make or break a brand, denying companies the right to reply is akin to making all journalists, no matter their backgrounds or motives, judge, jury, and executioner. Sadly, however, it is human nature to automatically assume that anyone accused of unethical or criminal conduct must be guilty. And in the media’s case, there is often no such thing as innocent until proven guilty.

This leads to a general unwillingness to share challenging views for fear of association. Alternatively, if responses are featured, they are reduced to punchlines or footnotes, portrayed with sinister undertones, or subjected to sly insinuations.

So, what are companies or individuals to do when they become the subject of a series of media attacks? How can companies share the other side of their operations, their good news and the positive work that they are doing? In the current media landscape, there is little to be done except to take out paid advertisements in order to challenge media’s narrative. Unfortunately, even these are deliberately construed as part of a larger conspiracy.

Accordingly, the Moti Group’s recent PR efforts involving a series of paid articles and adverts have recently been criticised as somehow criminal, illegal or unethical.

First, to be clear, I have left the Moti Group. Dondo Mogajane, a man that is highly respected by all who know him, and is renowned for his integrity and financial acumen as the former Director-General of National Treasury, is the new Chief Executive Officer of the group. Far from being part of a sudden and sinister ploy, he joined the group in June last year as part of the Moti Group’s succession strategy, knowing that I would be stepping away to pursue my own interests.

Second, now that Dondo has been at the helm of the organisation for a year and has familiarised himself further with the Moti Group’s various interests, reshaped its organisational structure and strengthened its corporate governance, he was ready to begin the process of addressing the group’s reputation. This meant sharing the news of his appointment as CEO, his vision for the group, and exciting projects in the pipeline with the public – all of which are based on fact.

As a result, the Moti Group did take out a series of paid advertorials in various publications. The premise of all articles was indeed that the Moti Group is now being led by former Treasury director-general Dondo Mogajane as CEO and Mikaeel Moti as executive director. Again, this is not a secret. It is a fact.

I am proud of what I achieved at the Moti Group, the thousands of jobs that I have helped to create, and the billions in investments that our business made in supporting South Africa and Zimbabwe’s economy. But I am not the Moti Group. My own businesses and the Moti Group are now on separate paths, and it has its own future to look forward to.

So, to emphasise again, there are always two sides to every story, and companies must be allowed the opportunity to share their own perceptions and good news. Without this, media discourse is not discourse. It is a dictatorship.

Rectron launches its first Technolab in the Eastern Cape

Rectron, a leading South African distributor of IT products, has opened a fully equipped Technolab at Ntabenkonyana SS School near Middledrift in the Eastern Cape. Over R500 000 in state-of-the-art computer equipment and infrastructure was donated and installed in the new facility by Rectron.

“Earlier this week, we were in the Eastern Cape province to continue our work under our Progressive Educational Upliftment (PEU) CSI programme to empower the youth with the right tech skills and knowledge for a digital career,” says Kutlwano Rawana, Chief of People at Rectron. “Our Technolabs initiative aims to level the playing field and ensure that all students, from different backgrounds have access to the technology they need.”

Rectron worked closely with the Ziphozihle Siwa Foundation to identify a school where a digital facility sponsorship such as a Technolab would not only benefit the learners, but that of the wider rural community. The foundation will continue to work closely with the school to ensure Rectron’s Technolab continues to have a sustainable impact long into the future.

“We are excited and welcome the initiative and sponsorship by Rectron. Access to opportunities by rural communities is most urgent at this time,” says Bishop Ziphozihle Siwa. “The sponsorship of the Technolab will go a long way in boosting the morale and add much value to what the school seeks to achieve.”

This is the sixth Technolab that Rectron has opened since the PEU initiative was first launched in 2022. After months of discussions with the teachers at Ntabenkonyana SS School and the Ziphozihle Siwa Foundation, Rectron was able to understand what the immediate needs of the learners were and deliver the right equipment that would help create a positive impact. Learners now have access to a classroom that is kitted out with state-of-the-art computers and screens as well as software. In addition to this, EcoFlow, a leading eco-friendly energy solution company, has also donated 24 DELTA series portable power stations.

“Knowing the impact load shedding is having around the country, we wanted to ensure that lessons remained uninterrupted for the learners and educators at Ntabenkonyana Secondary School,” says Joy Wu, Head of LAMEA & APAC at EcoFlow. “EcoFlow aims to empower people around the world to live, dream and explore without limits. We know that our energy solutions will further support Rectron’s PEU initiative.”

Rectron also partnered with Cricut, Scancode and AOC who sponsored various equipment and expertise to complete the Technolab, while Canon kindly donated food packs to the 488 learners at the launch of the Technolab on 16 May.

“While access to digital devices like computers is important, training and support are crucial to ensure that the Technolab lives up to its full potential,” says Rawana. “On top of the donation and installation, we will work with teachers at Ntabenkonyana SS School and the Eastern Cape Department of Basic Education to ensure that they are empowered to support the institution’s educational outcomes and promote digital literacy.”

“According to a 2020 Stats SA report on education, just under a third (32.2%) of South Africans between the ages of 5 and 24 had access to a laptop or desktop. This is a troubling statistic in today’s modern age where digital skills are no longer a nice-to-have in the workplace but an absolute necessity,” says Spencer Chen, Chief Executive Officer at Rectron. “Our PEU initiative is focused on changing this statistic in South Africa’s under resourced schools and ensuring that we can create more opportunities for our country’s youth.”

Earlier this year, Rectron received the news that one of its previous Technolab recipients Tshelenkosi Secondary School in Stanger achieved a 90.3% Matric pass rate for 2022. This is a huge increase from its 2021 pass rate of 65% and demonstrates the impact digital resources can have on a school.

“I think I speak for all the learners and teachers of Ntabenkonyana SS School when I say we could not be more excited to hold our first lesson in our new Technolab,” says Charmaine Nel, Principal of Ntabenkonyana SS School. “On the surface this might be a high-tech facility, but on a deeper level this is an important investment in our community’s future. Rectron’s Technolab will be a vital tool in providing the right digital education and skills development to our learners.”
