Laughter really is the best medicine…

After two and a half years of being locked down in isolation due to Covid-19, it probably doesn’t come as a surprise that individual wellbeing is now firmly on top of the mental health agenda.

Taking care of the human mind as well as the body not only helps maintain good health, but also keeps us happy, makes us feel in control and ensures we have the tools and support to successfully overcome difficulties and achieve what we want out of life.

Larry Soffer, the leading Mentalist in Africa explains that during the recent pandemic, both resources and options were few. Many people were forced to take things into their own hands, finding new ways to entertain themselves, especially after the lure of Netflix wore off. “I saw so many of my friends and family start baking banana breads, take up gardening, or start a new hobby like making jewellery or creating pottery. A few have since turned these side hustles into profitable businesses which is just amazing,” he laughs.

Now that we have been unmasked, and things are open and almost back to normal, Larry and many like him hope that people go back to being entertained in the ways they know and love. Even at a time when many South Africans are tightening their financial purse strings, due to the escalating cost of living crisis, the important role the entertainment industry can play in helping improve and support mental health and wellbeing cannot be overlooked.

“It really is a gamechanger. After all, they do so say that laughter is the best medicine, and you can see why. Entertainment, especially live entertainment, is the ultimate feel-good factor and the perfect way of escaping from our everyday routines. It is also about sharing elements of fun and lightness and emotional connection with a room full of others,” he adds.

Here are Larry’s five reasons why entertainment is so important to mental health

and wellbeing:

  1. We just can’t help ourselves

We can trace entertainment back to the first and second centuries where hand puppets, storytelling, music and dance was very much a part of the social fabric of society. Entertainment has always been a part of who we are as humans, Larry says it is because we desire fun and laughter in our lives.

  1. We are wired to seek out things that bring us joy

And, being entertained delivers this in truckloads! You only need to look at a young infant to see what I mean. They get so much joy from simply watching a cartoon on TV, playing peek-a-boo with an adult or even from seeing their own reflection in the mirror. It’s all entertainment for them and it can bring them hours of fun and laughter.

  1. We always need a break from reality

We get so consumed by everyday stressors that we long for those small moments or activities that relieve us from that. For some, it helps to spend time in the gym while others might want to be outside at one with nature. Entertainment is different though as it has the possibility to transport us out of our everyday mundane lives and into a world where we can experience magic and mystery, and where we can believe in the impossible.

  1. Entertainment works around you

From comedians, singers and ventriloquists to dancers, musicians, and magicians, pretty much all artists had some form of online offering during the lockdown. Some were conducted in their living rooms, others on balconies or gardens, but all happened because as entertainers, we understand the need to spread joy and positivity during very difficult times.

This is the determined spirit of an artist – they simply cannot be stopped and will always find a way to express their craft. I know I absolutely loved entertaining during the lockdown, seeing packed out living rooms full of family and friends all desperate for some respite from the worry and doom.

  1. As human we naturally gravitate to positivity and the desire to be uplifted

How many of us live for the weekend, so that we can plan something fun, different, and exciting over our two free days? We do it, because we get so much positive energy from a good experience or from being with good people. If you’re feeling happy and positive, you’re likely to radiate and transfer these happy feelings to someone else – like a domino effect, which is a great way of elevating everyone’s mental health and wellbeing.

Larry inspires his audiences to believe in the impossible so that they can achieve their dreams. Follow @LarrySoffer or visit his website for more information at www.larrysoffer.com.

But some of them, I thought it’d be fun to do a really fresh take on it. I wanted to record them in a way that was more intimate so that people could really feel and listen to every lyric.”

The Shoprite Group’s new electric truck: heavy duty and “glow in the dark”

The Shoprite Group is the first South African retailer to pilot a heavy-duty electric truck as part of its fleet, and 28-year-old Robin Jooste from Colorado Park, Mitchells Plain has been selected to drive it.

The vehicle, a Scania Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), is 100% electric, therefore has no reliance on fossil fuels and emits no carbon dioxide. The refrigerated truck can hold approximately 16 pallets, has nine batteries, solar panels fitted to its roof and a fully electric cooling system which is also powered by the battery packs of the vehicle.

With a range in the region of 350km, the vehicle will be used for local deliveries and will be recharged using renewable energy generated by the Group’s existing solar installations.

In another first, the truck’s special “glow in the dark” signage will make it more visible when travelling at night. When exposed to bright (day) light, the signage can absorb and store particles. This stored energy is again emitted when its dark, resulting in a glow.

“As Africa’s largest grocery retailer, the Shoprite Group places significant focus on reducing its environmental impact across its operations. One of the ways we’re doing this is by increasing the energy efficiency of our truck fleet. The acquisition of this, one of the world’s most advanced electric trucks, which we will charge using our existing renewable energy infrastructure, is another major move in this direction,” says Andrew Havinga, Chief Supply Chain Officer for the Group.

The addition of the new electric truck forms part of the Group’s ongoing efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its supply chain. It recently acquired over 100 of the most fuel-efficient Euro 5 compliant trucks in Southern Africa and more than 900 of its trailers are fitted with solar panels which enable the refrigeration and tailgate lift to continue to run on solar power even when the truck is switched off.

Going green is good for business

Going Green
Going green is good for business.

A tipping point may have been reached in the rise of environmental awareness worldwide. The massive amounts of scientific data gathered by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has led governments to set targets for their countries to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from fossil-fuel use.

Big business is following suit with companies around the world committing to ambitious plans about how they operate. For example, major car companies in Europe will end production of the internal combustion engine in popular models in twenty years or so. Some broad implications and opportunities for SA companies arising from the EU’s Green New Deal are unpacked here.

Meanwhile, the pandemic has given people time to reflect on priorities and values, and their connection with nature. And why, how and where they make their purchasing decisions.

Sustainability is a journey

This major shift in awareness around environmental sustainability is creating business opportunities in many sectors.  For companies in South Africa interested in taking the greener route but uncertain how to go about it, here are some general pointers.

Two principles to remember are that it’s a journey not a destination and that it’s done from the inside outwards.  This means firstly, a long- term commitment by leadership to follow the path to sustainability. So board and management must be behind it all along the way, and ready to provide adequate financial and staff support.

Secondly, a company should be getting its own house in order before telling the outside world that it is   going green. A declaration of intent, pledge or policy, followed by a plan of action enables a company to start raising its green flag.

A three-pronged change process

Greening involves three processes: organizational, technical and communication. The organizational side involves the CEO or MD publicly stating that sustainability is a company objective, while empowering a champion and team to drive the process, with staff training at all levels.

The technical side begins with an in-depth assessment of how much energy, water and raw materials are presently being used. This focuses on finding eco- efficiencies and reducing usage over time.

Communications are essential to spread awareness and achievements to inform and motivate staff, as well as to share the news with customers and suppliers. Content can include milestones achieved along the path and product innovations which are environmentally preferable and give green ‘added value’.

It is vital however to ensure that claims about the environmental sustainability of achievements or product promises are authentic.  The Advertising Regulatory Board of South Africa in its Appendix G, has a set of guidelines that outlines what is and isn’t acceptable. Any member of the public or  competitor can make an objection to a dubious claim. If successful, this can cause serious damage to company and brand reputation, with resulting loss of revenue and market share.

Green business benefits

The benefits of going green include cost savings from reduced energy, water and waste.  In addition, customer loyalty and brand reputation increase, as does staff motivation and productivity.  Going green enables product innovations that are eco-friendly to expand existing product ranges. It also opens up new business opportunities in the fast-emerging conscious consumer market.

The sustainability wave is undoubtedly growing.  Companies who will benefit most are the ‘first movers’ who gain cost savings to their bottom-line while creating competitive advantage in the marketplace.

Don’t be stuck in Janu-worry

NOVEMBER 2022: South Africans between 18 and 65 will spend an average of R 5 606 during the festive season. Additionally, based on Statistics SA’s mid-year population estimates, working-age South Africans are expected to pump R204 billion into the economy in 2022.

In September 2022, the average nominal salary reached R15 063, up from a revised R14 711 in August 2022, according to Bankserv Africa’s latest index. In essence, the R5 606 average expenditure for the festive season is more than a third of one’s salary.
Often called the “silly season”, this is once again the time of year when smart spending should be emphasised. As the holiday season begins, everyone looks forward to spending time with loved ones and making the occasion memorable. However, holiday bliss comes with a price tag that exceeds our means. When January comes around, consumers often find themselves in a rabbit hole because they tend to buy impulsively, do not budget adequately, and abuse their credit facilities.

Due to Christmas, Boxing Day, and New Year’s festivities, people tend to overspend during the December holidays. Whether purchasing gifts for loved ones, taking destination holidays, or planning road trips, it means investing in entertainment and road trips. Ultimately, it all comes down to cost. Whether you can afford it or not, these are costs you should consider. It is not uncommon for consumers to turn to credit cards or other means, such as loans to secure their desired vacations when their salaries or bonuses don’t stretch throughout the festive season. With the festive season just around the corner, CreditSmart Founder and Managing Director,Wikus Olivier, has provided six Festive Finance Tips to ease financial concerns.

● Stick to your budget.
● Stay away from making bad debt.
● Do some careful financial planning.
● Get your mindset in the right place by committing to not overspending

Stick to what you can afford.
Save your bonus or pay off some of your debt.
He explains, “Sticking to a budget is so important, especially now with inflation being as high as it is. Don’t be that person paying off his December holiday for the next 24 months. Remember that what you do during the holidays will set your starting point for the new year. If you dug yourself into a financial hole during the festive season, you’ll be demotivated going into the new year.”
“Rather do some careful financial planning before the silly season starts. Get your mindset in the right space by committing to not overspend or get caught up in the hype, especially on days like Black Friday. Stick to what you can afford, even if it means staying home this year. If you are lucky enough to get a bonus, take the opportunity to move your finances forward by saving, paying off your debt to improve your credit score, or just building a surplus so you don’t have to live hand-to-mouth,” continued Wikus.

If you find that you’ve become reliant on debt, CreditSmart has the solution to help you take back control of your finances. CreditSmart can assist you by combining your debt into a singular, affordable payment to free up your cash flow and provide you with the relief you need to truly enjoy the festive season without your financial position weighing you down.

Q&A to help you to understand the basics of protecting your salary

Clyde Parsons, Chief Innovation Officer at BrightRock

South Africa’s high unemployment rate is scary to say the least. Job security is one of things that’s not guaranteed and it’s better to play it safe by protecting your income and not find yourself uncovered when circumstances beyond your control change your life.

In this article, Clyde Parsons, the Chief Innovation Officer at BrightRock answers questions about the importance of having income protection cover included in your life insurance policy.

  1. What type of insurance should people take out to ensure they are financially secure in the event they are unable to work?

You can buy insurance for a temporary or permanent inability to earn an income due to an illness or injury. Temporary income protection always pays out a monthly income, usually for up to 24 months (but other companies like BrightRock offers temporary income protection for up to 36 months).

For permanent income protection, you will usually have a choice between cover that pays out in a lump sum (usually known as capital disability cover) or cover that pays out recurring monthly income pay-outs, but BrightRock has introduced unique disability benefits where you can choose either of these at claims stage, securing the best of both worlds.

  1. Why is it important to have income protection?

Because your ability to earn an income is your biggest asset – it enables you to afford necessary assets like a home and car, childcare and healthcare. Having the right cover in place enables you to continue to afford these expenses and honour your responsibilities in the event of a debilitating injury or serious illness. And while the lump sum figures often look very big, it may not be sufficient to provide you with the income you need. It is therefore important to make sure you have enough cover to prevent any shortfalls in your expenses. Ask your financial adviser to do a thorough analysis of your needs to ensure you’ve signed up for a policy that matches it sustainably.

  1. At what stage in a person’s life should they take out income protection?

Any person who is dependent on a monthly salary needs income protection until he or she reaches retirement age. Bear in mind that the total amount you require to replace all your remaining pay cheques typically reduces as you age, so you need to protect fewer and fewer salary slips over time. When you first start out in your career, the need will be at its highest because of the dependency on your income for the rest of your working life. As you start to near retirement age, your children will be likely to leave home and your debts will be paid off, and fewer pay cheques to protect, so your financial responsibilities will start reducing. And your retirement savings should kick in at retirement age to provide you with an income once you stop working, so you don’t need income protection cover once you reach retirement.

  1. What are the features of a good income protection product?

A good income protection product will match your needs by offering the following features:

  • It tracks the value of your remaining pay cheques. Typically, this cover will start out high fairly high and increase initially to match your increasing financial needs before it starts reducing as you near retirement. Remember the Afrikaans saying, Goedkoop is duur koop – the cheapest purchases tend to be the expensive ones in the long run, because you’re often compromising on quality and comprehensiveness of cover. There are many products on the market that start off with very low cover when your financial exposure and number of pay cheques to protect are at their highest but offer more cover later in life, when you actually need less.
  • It will offer you certainty of the amounts it will pay out when you lodge a claim. For example, if it’s a lump sum, it should give you a guarantee regarding the income you could buy with the lump sum. Make sure you understand the claims criteria of the cover you’re signing up for. Are they subjective or objective in a sense that some of the terms might be ambiguous? Will your pay-out be reassessed in claim?
  • Flexibility when you claim is another important feature. Because no two individuals’ needs are the same, a good income protection product will offer you the ability to change your choice of a lump-sum to a guaranteed recurring income pay-out (or any combination of income and lump-sum) at claims stage, when you know exactly what you need. This provides you the best of both worlds – an income and a lump-sum benefit in one. The ability to change your cover as your needs change without underwriting is also vital. (BrightRock offers you the ability to convert your disability cover, anytime you no longer need it (say at age 62) to cover for a different benefit, such as life cover or dread disease cover. This should be absolutely free of medical underwriting, giving you whole of life cover those changes with your needs).
  1. Under what conditions would a person be able to claim for income protection?

The conditions under which you will be able to claim, varies from policy to policy. It is important to sign up for cover that offers claims certainty. Some insurers may require proof of loss of income or proof that you can’t work, which can be subjective. Some “permanent” income protection policies will even stop your pay-outs being made when your permanent income protection claim has already been approved – this can be for a number of different reasons, including when the insurer feels you’ve recovered enough to go back to work. A good income protection provider will focus on medical or clinical criteria with an occupational underpin for added certainty:

  • Temporary: BrightRock requires policyholders to be booked off work with a sick note. We never require proof of loss of income. Other insurers may require proof of loss of income or may reduce your pay-out if you are earning any form of active income, while BrightRock won’t reduce your pay-out if you are able to earn an active income while you are booked off. For extra certainty, we also have a list of over 400 specific medical conditions (referred to as clinical criteria) and will pay your claim if you meet those criteria, for example on breaking a collar bone. With BrightRock you can also structure your policy to receive a payment in the event of you being retrenched.
  • Permanent: BrightRock requires that your condition must meet the medical conditions (clinical criteria) that are listed in your policy, for example losing a hand. If your condition isn’t on the list, or does not meet all of the criteria and still prevents you from earning an income, we also have an occupational underpin in our Job Fitness Test (own occupation) and Personal Job Fitness Test (own specific occupation). If an independent occupational therapist finds you cannot work in your job permanently because of your condition, you will also qualify for a claim. For permanent claims, we use the same criteria for recurring and lump-sum pay-outs, while some insurers have different criteria. Once we have approved a permanent claim, we will never reassess or reduce your pay-out for any reason.

Dis-Chem expands its omnichannel personalisation service.

JOHANNESBURG, DATE – Dis-Chem Pharmacies has introduced a shopper personalisation and targeting offering that will elevate its ability to develop shopper insights to provide significant benefits for customers and suppliers.

Dis-Chem will be able to expand and scale its ability to power engagements across its media channels and deliver benefits for its customers, its brand partners and suppliers, and its business.

Saul Saltzman, executive director at Dis-Chem says the further development of the group’s customer-focused personalisation programme will allow it to achieve personal customer engagements at scale, across channels and in real-time, and will increase the impact of its joint marketing activities with suppliers. The technology optimizes Dis-Chem’s personalization efforts by predicting demand and understanding the preferences of each customer across all brands and categories.

“This innovation illustrates our commitment to customer-centricity by leveraging our well-entrenched Benefit Card loyalty programme.  We can now give our 6,8 million loyalty card customers the individualised offers they need, at the right time and on the right channels.  Shoppers will benefit from in-depth personalisation and targeting via bespoke special offers tailored to individual profiles and shopping patterns that will create engagements that matter for them by delivering content that brings them true value,” he says.

Suppliers can access deep and broad data, giving them information and insights across several categories and criteria. “This innovation gives us an in-depth and thorough understanding of our shoppers with the ability to drill down into granular shopper and customer detail.  Our data is simple and user-friendly and brings a unique opportunity to grow categories through supplier partnerships based on the integrity and depth of the data we can extract,” Saltzman says.
