LHM manufactures seven traction transformers for PRASA project in record time

LHM manufactures seven traction transformers for PRASA project in record time
Transformers

Transformer manufacturer, LH Marthinusen (LHM), a division of ACTOM, recently manufactured and supplied seven traction transformers for the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa’s (PRASA) key line restoration project.

Shuveer Maharaj, General Manager of the Transformer Engineering Services division at LHM, says the 6.1 MVA traction transformers had to be constructed in six months to meet the terms of the contract. The result was a huge success.

“These transformers were manufactured to our usual superior standards of quality, material and design. From the feedback we’ve received, our product has outperformed the international brands that the client had looked at,” says Maharaj.

Six of the traction transformers were supplied to a key project to restore several rail corridors in Gauteng by upgrading their overhead traction equipment, while the last unit was supplied to the Western Cape.

Maharaj notes that LHM’s ability to manufacture the transformers in under six months underscores the company’s – as well as South Africa’s – manufacturing capacity. LHM’s factory is already geared towards fast deliveries of specialised transformers.

Short lead times

“Our process at LHM is designed for short lead times and special transformers, such as these traction transformers. Our environment is set up to tackle these types of highly competitive projects that require lower lead time,” he says.

The extremely tight deadline of the contract was not without challenges and required the entire workforce comprehending the levels of urgency involved.

“For a project of this nature, we needed to ensure we had our priorities in order. This included making sure that there was enough material on hand and that the right amount of work shifts had been put in place so that we could manage the timelines along with the existing workload that we already had,” says Maharaj.

He adds that LHM is glad to be playing a part in key infrastructure projects such as the upgrade of the country’s rail corridors and says that such projects present an opportunity for local manufacturers to showcase their abilities and capacity.

“Instead of sourcing internationally, it is important to support local and make sure that South African businesses are part of and can benefit from these types of infrastructure projects. We should be showing that everything can really be done in-house,” he says.

More to come

Maharaj points out that since LHM now has a track record of success in this area, it plans to do more research on the different variants of traction transformers and finalise designs upfront to be ready when tender opportunities arise.

“We want customers to know that we are ready to ‘press the button’ to manufacture these transformers because we have already completed the backbone of the work,” he says.

In anticipation of a growing demand for specialised transformers, the company has purchased a new facility in Driehoek, in Germiston, and is currently also upgrading its factory in Cape Town to increase manufacturing capacity.

“We are proud to be doing our bit for the PRASA upgrade and to make sure that these railways are up and running. However, this must also be the springboard for local and successful manufacturers, as supporting local businesses is of crucial importance,” he concludes.

Your car will thank you for using the right engine oil

Your car will thank you for using the right engine oil
Castrol using the right oil

With people facing financial pressures, a new car has become an unaffordable luxury for many. But just because your car’s three- or five-year warranty has expired, you don’t need to replace it immediately with a new car and incur additional expenses, especially if your existing car has been well maintained and is still in acceptable working condition. Instead, using the right engine oil will help to keep your car fighting fit.

In June 2022, according to the latest available figures from Lightstone, the average age of a vehicle on South African roads was 10.5 years, from a low of 9.3 years in 2015. Keeping your car on the road comes at a cost. Once the warranty expires, you will have to pay for mechanical breakdowns and maintenance. Today’s cars are built better than they were 30 years ago, but unfortunately their complex electronics means that when they do break down, they can be very expensive to repair.

To assist in prolonging the life of your engine, it is critical to use the right oil. Not all engine oils are the same.

What difference can engine oil make?

The primary function of an engine oil or lubricant is to reduce friction and wear in the engine. They also perform a number of other functions including preventing the formation of sludge and varnish on metal surfaces; reducing metal to metal contact (e.g. on the cam shaft and bearings); improving fuel economy; keeping the engine running at optimum conditions; preventing seals from leaking or cracking; and reducing foaming as the oil moves through the engine.

Lubricants consist of base oil plus additional materials such as additives, detergents and viscosity modifiers to enhance the lubricants performance. The selection of and quantity of materials in the oil must be balanced to achieve the desired performance attributes for your vehicle.

The type of base oil; mineral vs synthetic and the viscosity of the oil is very dependent on the requirements of the vehicle and the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) specifications the oil carries. The manufacturers of modern cars will specify what you should use.

Choose the right oil

Castrol offers some of the world’s leading engine oil brands, such as EDGE, MAGNATEC and GTX. Each one addresses different aspects of car care.

Castrol EDGE: As global emissions standards tighten, engines provide better fuel economy and lower emissions, but at the same time turbo-charging increases the amount of pressure in the engine. Castrol EDGE delivers more power from the same amount of fuel.

Relative to a 5W-40 baseline, demonstrated by engine testing for more than 80% of the Castrol portfolio in volume in 2021.

Tested vs the Sequence IVA API SN & CEC OM646LA ACEA wear limits

Castrol MAGNATEC: A normal urban car can stop and start up to 18,000 times a year, causing microscopic engine wear. Castrol MAGNATEC with DUALOCK technology can reduce stop-start wear by up to 50%[2] compared with an industry reference 15W40 oil. It latches onto critical engine components, forming a strong layer of protection for your engine and unlocking non-stop protection from the moment you start.

Castrol GTX: Castrol GTX is made using a 3X Clean formula to fight the three causes of harmful engine sludge – heat, contaminants and short trips – keeping engines cleaner for longer. It catches harmful sludge particles by surrounding and trapping them, controls sludge by containing it, which prevents particles from sticking together or to surfaces, and cleans the engine, as the sludge is removed with the next oil change.

Use Castrol’s handy oil finder this will assist you in discovering what oil you should be using for your particular car make and model. Castrol’s range of high-quality oils are tailored to meet the needs of most cars, ensuring optimal performance and protection. It makes more rands and cents to use the right oil than to pay the steep costs of mechanical breakdown. Click here for more information: https://bit.ly/CastrolProductFinder.

But behind every successful post, vlog, or story lies their most crucial tool: a smartphone. And when it comes to choosing the perfect device, the HONOR 200 Series stands out as the top choice.

The world of work has changed drastically over the last five years. In 2019, daily trips to the office were the status quo. But in 2020, the world underwent its first major shift – the work-from-home culture. A year later, however, another shift occurred – the rise of content creation.

With no other outlet to stay entertained – everyone turned to social media and content creation. Today, the norm for absorbing content is through social media platforms. Content creators, storytellers and influencers use their creativity and charisma to fascinate, entertain and inspire millions of audiences around the world without ever having to set foot in a traditional office.

Smartphones have democratised content creation, allowing people the opportunity to share their stories, without the need for expensive equipment.

The ultimate device needs to have 5 important features to streamline the process of creating and editing quality content: good camera resolution, a long-lasting battery, a large storage capacity, good performance capabilities, and be dust and water resistant.

So, what is the perfect smartphone for content creators? The HONOR 200 Series, featuring the HONOR 200 5G and the HONOR 200 Pro 5G.

And here’s why:

Camera Quality Unmatched

HONOR recognises that a content creator’s most important tool is their camera setup. With this in mind, HONOR developed the HONOR 200 Series with a next-generation camera to help creators thrive.

Battery Life for the Win

Both devices house a large 5200mAh Silicon-Carbon Battery to maximise user productivity, with up to 60 hours of uninterrupted usage on a single charge. With powerful supercharge capabilities, the HONOR 200 Series comes with a 100W Wired HONOR SuperCharger and 66W Wireless HONOR SuperCharger – which allows users to have a fully charged device in just 41 minutes.

Storage for Every Moment

The HONOR 200 5G and HONOR 200 Pro 5G offers an impressive storage capacity to meet the needs of any Content Creator. With 12GB of Memory and 512GB of standard storage, these devices can keep up to 95 600 pictures locally, allowing creators to store and access their content without limitations.

Performance at its Best

The HONOR 200 Pro 5G is equipped with a Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 Mobile Platform, which achieves a CPU clock speed of up to 3GHz, guaranteeing seamless graphics rendering and real-time responsiveness.

The HONOR 200 5G features a Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 flagship chip for upgraded and enhanced performance.

Five tips for the perfect mid-year road trip

Five tips for the perfect mid-year road trip
Road Trip

As we pass the year’s halfway mark, we may find ourselves sleeping in more, doom scrolling and struggling to get on with duties and chores. One word can describe this feeling of perpetual fatigue: burnout.

You are not alone. One study found that about seven in 10 workers go through this occupational phenomenon each year. You can spot the signs by checking in with yourself. Do you feel tired even after a full night’s sleep? Do you have negative feelings or feel detached from your job? Are easy tasks taking longer than they should?

“Many people find that the mid-year period feels heavier than other months. This is an ideal time to take a breather and recharge our minds and bodies by getting away from the daily routine,” says Keletso Mpisane, Head of Blink by MiWay.

What better way to get some rest and reset than hitting the road alone or with loved ones? Cheaper accommodation rates make this an ideal time to visit a cosy cabin in the Drakensberg or take a road trip along the sublime Garden Route.

However you decide to get out of town, here are a few tips and tricks to help you plan the perfect mid-year road trip.

  1. Get your car checked by a mechanic before heading out

A road trip is the worst time to have car trouble. Making sure your car service is up to date before heading out of town will help you avoid frustration down the line.

“Your mechanic should look at your oil levels and check your tyres,” says Mpisane. “They must ensure your brakes are working well and check that there is enough cooling fluid. Lastly you want to make sure the windscreen doesn’t have any small chips that could turn into cracks.”

  1. Know your travel goals

Be clear about what you want to achieve by the end of your mid-year getaway. Is the goal to spend time with friends who make you feel recharged? Are you travelling alone so you can unplug and get some much-needed rest?

“Being intentional about the kind of experience you’d like to have will help you avoid feeling overwhelmed by decision-fatigue,” says the Blink by MiWay Head.

“This means making a list of everything you need to pack and plotting out your route, including rest stops so you have enough time to take in the beautiful South African countryside.”

  1. Keep road trip essentials on hand

There are a few handy tools that can get you out of almost any situation on the road. This includes packing a first-aid kit, making sure your car has jumper cables and all the tools needed to change a tyre.

“Some car wheels are fitted with a special key called a lock nut, which helps remove the tyre and replace it with a spare. Make sure you have the lock nut on hand whether you are changing the tyre or getting help from roadside assistance, because you can’t remove a flat tyre without it,” advises Mpisane.

  1. Make sure your interior is road trip ready

A clean car makes for a clear mind. Filling stations usually have a carwash attached so it’s advisable to pay for a quick clean before you set off.

“This is also the best time to curate your road trip playlist with your friends or family. Road trips are an ideal time to listen to audiobooks or the longer podcasts that have been taking up space on your phone,” says Mpisane.

You can easily save on data costs by downloading the playlists.

You should make sure your navigation app has an offline map saved to your phone because cell reception can be unreliable while in rural areas.

  1. Give yourself enough time

This applies both to having enough time to get to your destination and to return home. The mid-year reset should be devoid of the pressure and stresses we face in our daily lives, giving yourself enough time is the best way to do this.

Taking a scenic detour or just stopping to have lunch and smell the roses could be just the thing that helps you feel rejuvenated and ready to bounce back for the rest of the year.

“Whether you are travelling for 50 or 500 kilometres, giving yourself time and grace will help you end your trip on a high note,” concludes Mpisane.

More than just payment devices – unlock the business-building potential of POS devices

More than just payment devices – unlock the business-building potential of POS devices
Alan Shannon, Executive Head of Nedbank Small Business Services and Private Clients

Point-of-sale (POS) devices have long been synonymous with convenience in the business world. However, their true potential as catalysts for small and medium enterprise (SME) growth has remained largely untapped. Traditionally, these devices have been viewed merely as payment acceptance tools, but they hold the key to unlocking a wealth of opportunities for businesses willing to look beyond this limited perspective.

The evolution of POS technology presents a pivotal moment for SMEs. When integrated with a comprehensive banking relationship, these devices can be transformed from simple transaction processors into powerful business enablers. This shift can be particularly significant when the POS solution comes from a bank, as it can form part of a comprehensive and holistic view of the business and its entire financial landscape, rather than just being a payment device.

With their deep understanding of their business clients’ financial position, needs, and potential, banks are uniquely positioned to leverage POS data to solve many of the challenges that SMEs typically face. This comprehensive insight enables the creation and seamless delivery of tailored solutions that address the specific pain points of each business.

One of the most significant advantages of this integrated approach is the potential for capital advances based on POS sales, which can revolutionise cash flow management for SMEs. By providing access to funds based on real-time sales data, banks can help businesses optimise their cash flow, take advantage of growth opportunities, and navigate seasonal fluctuations with greater ease. This has the potential to be a game-changer for many small businesses given that liquidity issues are one of the main reasons why many SMEs struggle to stay afloat.

Beyond capital advances, an integrated POS solution can address several other critical challenges faced by most SMEs. For instance, it can help streamline the reconciliation process, providing real-time insights into sales patterns and financial performance. This data is very useful in terms of informing inventory management decisions, helping businesses buy and hold stock efficiently and reduce waste and risk. What’s more, the integration of POS data into the broader banking relationship can enhance credit assessments. With a clearer picture of a business’s cash flow and sales trends, banks can make more informed lending decisions, potentially improving access to credit for SMEs.

The self-service capabilities of modern POS solutions are also a key benefit. The ability to manage accounts, resolve issues, and access detailed reports through digital platforms empowers business owners, saves them time and provides greater control over their financial operations.

Finally, another often-overlooked benefit of a bank-supplied POS system is the valuable customer insights these devices offer the business and its banking partner. By analysing transaction data, businesses can gain a deeper understanding of their customer base, enabling more targeted marketing efforts and improved customer service. These insights are also invaluable in deepening the value that the bank can offer the business. It gives business bankers great insights that they can leverage to tailor enabling business solutions and offer business growth and expansion advice.

Ultimately, the true value of a POS device provided by a business bank lies in its ability to facilitate a more holistic and integrated financial partnership. Through a comprehensive view of the business’s financial health, it enables the bank to offer more appropriate solutions, underpinned by tailored and timely support. In other words, a POS device provided by a bank with a full understanding of the business becomes a gateway to a more sophisticated, integrated approach to financial management. This evolution takes payments and financial management to the next level, transforming them from necessary business functions into true business-building enablers.

For SMEs looking to thrive in an increasingly competitive landscape, embracing this new paradigm of POS functionality could be the key to unlocking their full potential. By viewing POS devices as strategic tools rather than mere conveniences, businesses can leverage their banking relationships more effectively, paving the way for enhanced financial management, improved decision-making and, ultimately, sustained growth and success.

Go GOGO, Go! Grannies in Alex receive digital skills training to address the digital divide

Go GOGO, Go! Grannies in Alex receive digital skills training to address the digital divide
GOGOs with Vuma graduation- Jabulani Safefub - Soweto

From safe online shopping and e-hailing a ride around town to supporting the next generation with digital skills, gogos (grandmothers) in Alexandra Township are finally entering the world of WhatsApp group chats, mobile apps and emails, thanks to non-governmental organisation (NGO) goGOGOgo and its iGOGO training programme.

For over four years, iGOGO has been instrumental in equipping gogos across the country with digital skills and development programmes and empowering them as agents of change in their families and communities. “With many gogos playing the role of caregiver, and taking on the responsibility of raising their grandchildren, and with children in South Africa expected to begin using digital devices once they reach Grade 7, the goal of the initiative is to equip gogos with the knowledge and skills necessary to support this process,” says Jane Simmonds, Executive Director and Founder of goGOGOgo.

Gogos_with Vuma

To help expand the reach and efficacy of the programme, one of South Africa’s leading fibre network providers, Vuma, has been working with goGOGOgo to assist in delivering much-needed ICT training and digital devices to gogos for over three years through the GOGOs with Vuma partnership.

The Vuma Fibre to Schools’ project, which has connected over 780 schools, plays a vital role in the GOGOs with Vuma initiative. The GOGOs with Vuma digital skills training workshops are hosted in partnership with Vuma-connected schools in selected regions, with teaching staff and learners helping to spread the word and encourage their grandmothers to join. To date, the iGOGO project has impacted over 500 gogos nationally and over 230 of these gogos have graduated through GOGOs with Vuma.

“In all our programmes, we are driven by a goal to stimulate educational and economic activity in local communities. By ensuring that our gogos are digitally equipped, we support them to participate in today’s modern economy, wholly fulfil their roles as breadwinners and carers – raising over 4 million grandchildren and assisting them with homework – as well as providing digital access to jobs and academic opportunities,” says Taylor Kwong, Head of Marketing at Vuma.

Kwong adds that with schools adjusting to the modern methods of teaching and offering educational support while changing their communication platforms, this initiative helps gogos stay updated with what’s happening in their grandchildren’s educational lives and provides the support needed by the learners such as keeping up with the schools digitised systems, helping them with research tasks for assignments and homework.

“This benefit goes beyond gogos themselves, creating a ripple effect on the overall economic growth and development of their families and communities. Their grandchildren will be prepared to participate in the increasingly digital society we live in when they graduate and become educated members of the community who can possibly bring change one day,” says Kwong.

This initiative has seen impactful milestones over the years, expanding to five provinces in the country and updating the training programme to now focus on cybersecurity when shopping online or using internet banking. This ensures grandmothers do not fall prey to online scams and fraud that would typically target elderly users. “Imagine how much easier would life be for a gogo in Seshego, Polokwane for instance, if she could have her groceries delivered to her home with Checkers Sixty60? It’s just about teaching gogos how to use the apps safely and responsibly,” says Jane.

“If a grandmother’s life is made easier and more convenient as the head of the household responsible for managing finances and taking care of the well-being of the family, then the life of the household as a whole automatically becomes easier,” adds Simmonds. Furthermore, iGOGO training also includes a session on the value of reading to children using the Book Dash app, an open-source app with thousands of free-to-access stories all originating from African authors.

“We, the gogos…”

goGOGOgo aims to give gogos a platform and amplify their voices as they navigate the digital world and take advantage of new opportunities. Other programmes offered by the NGO include GOGOvision, a programme to provide grandmothers with eye tests and prescription spectacles as required and GOGOBox, allowing gogos to get fit and have fun boxing once a week. A new project in the pipeline is Masifunde GOGO, a reading club for gogos to provide them with children’s books and teaching the importance and value of reading to children up to the age of 13 to improve childhood literacy.

“Your life changes if you can access the internet and for our gogos, this training and the many projects facilitated by goGOGOgo have the potential to change their lives for the better. But as we know in South Africa, internet access is expensive,” says Simmonds. “They need data, so they don’t have to choose between buying data or buying food. We are appealing for funders to join us in our work to bridge the digital divide.”

Current and upcoming titles in our cinemas include Twisters, Long Legs, Fly Me to the Moon, It Ends with Us, and of course, the much-anticipated Deadpool & Wolverine that released on 24 July.

“It’s all about Beetlejuice in September, with the sequel to ‘Joker’, Joker: Folie À Deux, which sees Joaquin Phoenix reprising his role as the Joker, and Lady Gaga joining the cast as his love interest, releasing in October. As we head towards the year end and holidays, audiences will be spoilt for choice with titles including Gladiator 2, Wicked Part 1, and Disney’s Moana 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King, both of which will make for great family viewing,” says Wylie.
