Vodafone and Amazon’s Project Kuiper to extend connectivity in Africa and Europe

Dave Limp AMAZON and Margherita Della Valle VODAFONE

Vodafone and Project Kuiper, Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite (LEO) communications initiative, today announced a strategic collaboration through which Vodafone and Vodacom plan to use Project Kuiper’s network to extend the reach of 4G/5G services to more of their customers in Europe and Africa.

Vodafone and Vodacom plan to use Project Kuiper’s high-bandwidth, low-latency satellite network to bring the benefits of 4G/5G connectivity to areas that may otherwise be challenging and prohibitively expensive to serve via traditional fibre or microwave solutions. Project Kuiper will connect geographically dispersed cellular antennas back to the companies’ core telecom networks. This means Vodafone and Vodacom will be able offer 4G/5G services in more locations without the time and expense of building out fibre-based or fixed wireless links back to the core networks.

As part of the collaboration, Amazon plans to partner with Vodafone to roll out Project Kuiper’s high-speed broadband services to unserved and underserved communities around the world. The companies are also exploring additional enterprise-specific offerings to provide businesses with comprehensive global connectivity solutions, such as backup service for unexpected events and extending connectivity to remote infrastructure.

Margherita Della Valle, Vodafone Group Chief Executive, said: “Vodafone’s work with Project Kuiper will provide mobile connectivity to many of the estimated 40% of the global population without internet access, supporting remote communities, their schools and businesses, the emergency services, and disaster relief. These connections will be complemented further through our own work on direct-to-smartphone satellite services.”

“Amazon is building Project Kuiper to provide fast, affordable broadband to tens of millions of customers in unserved and underserved communities, and our flexible network means we can connect places that have traditionally been difficult to reach,” said Dave Limp, Amazon’s senior vice president for devices and services. “Teaming with a leading international service provider like Vodafone allows us to make a bigger impact faster in closing the digital divide in Europe and Africa. Together we’ll explore how we can help our customers get the most value from expanded connectivity, particularly in areas like residential broadband, agriculture, education, healthcare, transportation, and financial services.”

“At Vodacom, our purpose is to connect for a better future, and we work every day to bring more people in Africa online,” said Shameel Joosub, CEO of Vodacom Group. “Collaborating with Project Kuiper gives us an exciting new path to scale our efforts, using Amazon’s satellite constellation to quickly reach more customers across the African continent.”

Vodafone, Vodacom and Project Kuiper will begin deploying services in Africa and Europe as Amazon’s production satellites come online. Amazon is preparing to test two prototype satellites in the coming months before starting to deploy production satellites in 2024. Amazon expects to begin beta testing Project Kuiper services with select customers by the end of 2024, and Vodafone and Vodacom plan to participate in that testing through this collaboration.

IYF celebrates women in Tech

Digital technologies have created new spaces for interaction and enabled new ways to connect, share experiences, work and build communities. It is estimated that by 2030 in Sub-Saharan Africa alone more than 230 million jobs will require digital skill sets. The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector has always been a male-dominated industry. In 2022, it was estimated that women made up only 27% of the tech industry. Even more alarming is the mere 6% of women in app development.

Unfortunately, this digital divide is exacerbated in Africa, and countries with historic or systemic socio-economic empowerment. As one of the fastest growing industries globally, it is concerning that women, who make up 50% of the workforce, make up less than 30% of ICT workers in Sub-Saharan Africa.

IYF’s digital empowerment program, Skills for Success (S4S), has been addressing this gap, giving students the opportunity to enroll in a variety of ICT courses certified by Google, including professional certificates in IT, UX Design, Data Analytics, Project Management and Digital Marketing & E-Commerce. Currently, 80% of the program’s enrolled learners are women.

Thus far, over 3000 people have enrolled in the S4S program, with more learners being onboarded as the programs expands. What has set S4S apart from many other educational ICT program is its holistic structure, which not only attends to hard skills required in the ICT sector, but also soft skills such as constructing a CV, and base-entrepreneurship skillsets, designed to provide students with the tools required to launch their own businesses. This push towards entrepreneurship addresses another socio-economic inequality – the lack of women-owned SMMEs. Women own only 36% of all small businesses worldwide, a figure that is amplified in lower-income countries.

The program has been rolled out in three African countries – South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria, receiving positive responses from enrolled learners and graduates, who have embraced their newfound IT skills and entrepreneurial learning. A female Nigerian learner spoke on the course’s effect saying, “I have strong desire to share the knowledge I’ve gained with others, with a particular focus on empowering females through the transfer of these valuable expertise.”

International Women in Cyber Day (1 September) draws awareness to the gender gaps in the ICT sector and recognises the need for more diversity in the industry. The IYF is not only committed to proliferating this awareness, but more importantly, actioning sustainable change in the sector through S4S. Inequities in ICT knowledge and employment is not something that will be fixed overnight, but change will only come through methods that empower those interested in pursuing ICT with an accessible, sustainable and practical program that has a tangible impact.

And we are already seeing the results of the Skills for Success program, to date more than 1200 livelihood opportunities have been documented as well as a marked increase in the job security and earning potential of graduates. S4S’s achievements are undoubtedly changing the gender landscape of the ICT sector in Africa and moving the needle further towards a more equitable economy.

Importantly, there is a butterfly effect to S4S program. Forbes recognised that 60.2% of gender diverse companies reported increased profits and productivity, suggesting that companies that embrace gender equity are ultimately more likely to succeed, and more likely to bolster economies. With S4S providing an accessible pipeline of women learners into the ICT industry, the effect is not only the empowerment of women, but the growth of the ICT sector, whilst providing solid foundations for a strengthened economy.

How to plan a multi-generational holiday

Three or even four generations on a scenic adventure, exploring coastlines, the bush or the open roads is a daydream for many. Multi-generational family trips first emerged as a major travel trend nine years ago when boomers began bringing their families along on their post-retirement holidays. This style of holidaying fell out of fashion in the following years but post pandemic, multi-generational holidays are once again on the rise.

Eager to spend time with family, reconnecting and making special memories, people are increasingly planning trips the whole family can enjoy. Far being a fad, multi-generational trips are set to be one of the biggest travel trends of 2023, reflecting the changing demands of travellers wanting cost-effective holidays that are rich in meaningful moments.

In the UK, a new study has found that 89% of people are considering booking a getaway with at least three generations of their family, with 70% expressing a desire to create lasting memories while on holiday. South Africans are equally keen to holiday with grandparents and grandkids in tow, with a survey by Picodi Analysis Team on our travelling habits and preferences showing that 61% of South Africans prefer to holiday with family.

Whether your family this summer plans to visit exotic far flung parts of the world or explore Mzansi’s treasure trove of splendid destinations, like the Kruger National Park or Garden Route, be inspired by these tips from Sarah Watson, Guest Relations Manager at Kruger Gate Hotel, in planning a trip everyone will enjoy,

Begin planning well ahead of time

We all know the saying, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.” That could not be truer when it comes to organising a getaway with a group of people ranging in different stages of life, says Watson. School holiday calendars, work leave days, ideal weather for your activities and factoring other important events during the year are all aspects to consider when going about creating an itinerary that is feasible. You may choose to use the services of a professional travel agent to make this process easier or designate the role to the most organised of your family members. Either way it’s best to plan at least six months ahead of the trip.

Decide on an ideal trip

A rejuvenating, intimate spa getaway is best suited for a couple and an action-packed holiday might be appropriate for a family with younger children. However, this is an adventure unlike any other – one where you have to factor in how the trip will appeal to all ages and needs.

“In a multi-generational trip, a family could have young children or perhaps a grandparent with limited mobility, and of course you want everyone to enjoy themselves to the fullest. Opt for trips that you know will excite everyone. A safari holiday, for example, will appeal to the adults who want to unwind in nature, and the children will benefit from learning about South Africa’s world-famous wildlife. Safaris are also popular multi-generational trip destinations as many hope to see endangered animals in the bush,” explains Watson. “Make sure that the lodge you choose to stay at caters to the whole family’s needs, and that everyone will feel comfortable and welcome there.”

Activities for everyone

Consider what kind of activities will be appropriate and fun for everyone in the family. Tweens might not love wine farm tours, and perhaps granny won’t be enthusiastic about roller coaster rides so take into consideration that the trip’s activities will have to be age-appropriate and suited to your family dynamic. Some families are avid foodies and their holiday might revolve around which restaurants to book, whereas others could be history buffs who want cultural activities surrounding museums or guided tours.

Separate or alone time is okay

“You don’t need to spend every minute of the holiday together,” advises Watson. “Sometimes a moment to ourselves is essential – a holiday is a holiday after all! Taking some time out to read your book, having a relaxing Kruger Gate Hotel spa treatment in the wild or indulging in an afternoon nap is part of the holiday experience. Perhaps everyone could agree to a designated time for the group to do something for themselves each day,” Watson suggests.

Collect memories not screen time

It’s no secret that many of us spend a lot of time on our devices or cell phones. In fact, a report by Electronics Hub studied how much time people across 45 countries globally spent glued to electronic devices and South Africans took the number one spot for spending the most time glued to our screens. We are spending roughly 58.2% of our days in front of a device screen, according to the report findings. Time spent with our families and on a holiday is precious; engage with each other more than with a screen.

“When I interact with guests on multi-generational trips it often comes up how special it is to have everyone together, and how long the family has been wanting to go on such a trip. This is a time to unplug and embrace each moment, and make memories to last a lifetime,” says Watson.

Road trip transportation

Families that love setting off on the open road are spoilt for choice with the scenic options our country has. The enchanting Panorama Route, which meanders through the Mpumalanga highlands, or the north-eastern section of the Great Escarpment of the Drakensberg, is known for its scenic beauty. Relish these regions’ panoramic views, rugged cliffs and lush vegetation on an adventurous family road trip.

However, if the whole family is joining the ride make sure to check the comfort of the seats if you’re booking a rental car. Take into account space for luggage and items like baby car seats, and that there’s enough leg room as you could spend hours in the car on your road trip.

Classifying data effectively is the key to leveraging value from it

Iniel Dreyer, Managing Director of Data Management Professionals South Africa (DMP SA)

As the understanding that data insights can drive leadership and innovation gains traction, businesses have become increasingly data focused. While data collection is nothing new, the reality is that many organisations have no idea what data they have, where it is located and how it can most effectively be leveraged. This scenario has become even more complex as businesses migrate to the cloud, creating more disparate data sources, duplication and data sprawl that can make gaining insights from data impossible. The key to solving this challenge is data classification, as part of an overall data management strategy, in order to gain control over data and enable it to be leveraged to drive business value.

What are we doing with data

Without a data strategy, data is often collected indiscriminately, and with more and more data sources, including a growing number of sensors, connected devices and more, data volumes have increased exponentially. Lack of centralised control also means data is often duplicated multiple times.

This leads to rapidly accelerating data storage costs, which are increasingly problematic, particularly regarding cloud migrations, where costs are directly related to volumes. In addition, data cannot effectively be used for analysis, which means it cannot drive proactive decisions or add value.

Dark data like this is a burden, a cost, and a potential liability, rather than the strategic asset it could turn into. Businesses need to understand what data they have, where, why and what they can get out of it, otherwise they cannot leverage it for insight, and run the risk of falling foul of increasingly stringent laws around data.

Containing the sprawl

To use data as an asset, it is vital to proactively understand what data we need and what data we have, consolidate data sources, ensure that there are no duplicate copies of data, and have a strategy for extracting the data.

Critical to the ability to contain data sprawl and turn data into information, the business can utilisedata classification. Effectively categorising data helps businesses understand not only what they have but also what is important, how to prioritise data, and how to ensure that critical data types and locations are effectively identified and protected so that the risk around them is understood.

When data is classified correctly, data retention strategies are more effective, analytics is more impactful and data storage is less costly, because duplicates can be identified and weeded out and only data that is needed is kept. This also allows for far more effective insight and intelligence. Data classification should go hand in hand with data management and form a key part of the data strategy.

Working together

Data is not an IT problem, it is a business problem, because business needs to drive the decisions around what data must be used for, before IT can act as an enabler in delivering this. Business needs to understand what applications are generating what data and what information they require to drive decision making. Only then can IT and data management come together with business, to deliver the systems that will drive data classification in line with business requirements. Effective data management and classification relies on a central repository for accessing information, a single overview, and a single pane of glass for dealing with data to prevent sprawl.

All of this requires expert skills, which are typically in short supply and difficult to obtain in-house. Having the right data management partner can be invaluable, particularly as businesses migrate further into the cloud. Data costs can quickly spiral with a cloud-first approach, but with a classification strategy up front, these costs can be contained. A data management specialist will help businesses to identify the pitfalls, ensure that a well-designed strategy is in place and that data can be consolidated and managed from a single pane of glass with as few tools as possible. This will help to mitigate risk, minimise cost and ensure data is compliant and available for the essential analytics that drive business insight, innovation and intelligent decision making.

Selecting medical aid and gap cover to suit your needs

Medical aid is a must in South Africa for anyone looking to make use of private healthcare, as the cost for those who are not members of medical schemes is simply out of reach for most people. However, co-payments, sub-limits and medical expense shortfalls have become increasingly common, leaving people out of pocket even when they do have medical aid. As a result, gap cover has become an essential part of a comprehensive healthcare portfolio, but selecting the right product can be daunting. When it comes to choosing medical aid as well as gap cover to suit your needs, your life stage and your budget, the right advice is critical.

Step 1: Choosing a medical aid option

Selecting a medical aid scheme and plan option is a personal exercise, as there are many different offerings available from multiple providers and everyone’s circumstances are unique. The right plan depends on your individual circumstances, such as your age and your life stage, as well as your own health. It also depends on affordability and budget factors, as the cost of medical aid can be a significant expense. It is also important to consider any limitations, additional expenses, exclusions or waiting periods that could apply, which again depends on personal circumstances.

For example, a single, healthy 26-year-old with no children will have very different needs from someone in their mid-fifties with a chronic condition like blood pressure or diabetes, and a basic hospital plan might be sufficient for them, while the person with the chronic condition will need a more comprehensive solution. At the same time, a 26-year-old who is planning to start a family or who has children will also have different requirements from their medical aid. Sifting through the many different options to find the right one for you can be a challenging task, which is why brokers and financial advisors are available to provide advice.

Filling the gap

There are essentially three core components of gap cover, with the most important one typically being hospital expense medical shortfall cover, as this is where most out-of-pocket expenses originate. The other two essential components are co-payments and sub-limits. It is once again important to also look at exclusions, limitations and waiting periods imposed by the gap cover provider.

Once a medical scheme option has been selected, the ‘holes’ in your cover can be plugged with an affordable gap cover policy that will supplement the medical aid option you have chosen in terms of these three areas. If your chosen medical aid option includes large co-payments then it is critical for your chosen gap cover to have substantial co-payment cover, for example. All medical aid schemes and options differ when it comes to these elements, so it is vital to find a gap policy that fits well to supplement your cover.

There are also a range of value-added extras that gap cover providers may offer, including a casualty benefit to cover the expenses of a visit to the emergency room, counselling benefits and premium waivers. Again, the advice of a broker or financial advisor can be invaluable in helping you select the right gap cover policy to suit your needs as well as your chosen medical scheme plan and option.

One size does not fit all

The reality is that there is no single solution that will meet everyone’s circumstances, lifestyle, life stage, age, budget, and other needs. Everyone is different, and to effectively protect your financial future, it is essential to get the right fit. Expert advice can go a long way in making sure you have the best medical aid cover you can afford – and the services of a broker are included as part of medical schemes, so there are no additional fees for making use of this service. Your broker can also help you to find the most appropriate gap cover to fit your unique individual needs.
