Southern Sun and Miss Earth South Africa join forces to celebrate World Environment Day 2023

As Southern Sun continues with efforts to responsibly manage its environmental footprint, the group’s commitment was emphasised this World Environment Day by a community project undertaken with partner, the Miss Earth South Africa Leadership Development Programme who, together with Wild Route Trees and GebCo 3Sixty compost, embarked on a tree-planting initiative and community clean-up to promote environmental stewardship at Matiwane Combined School in Orange Farm.

Aligned with the United Nations Environment Programme’s theme for this year, #BeatPlasticPollution, Miss Earth South Africa highlighted the importance of individual responsibility in addressing plastic pollution. The organisation emphasised the need for individuals to be accountable for their own waste footprint, advocating for reuse and recycling as essential solutions.

Ella Bella Leite, Director of Miss Earth South Africa, emphasised the urgency of finding sustainable solutions to the plastic waste in our environment and oceans. “Ending plastic pollution requires the involvement of every individual. Together, we can make a difference #ForPeopleForPlanet,” said Leite. The leadership programme collaborates with like-minded partners such as Southern Sun, to support and promote efforts intended to tackle this critical issue.

Through its various environmental policies and projects, Southern Sun continues to implement actionable changes in order to minimise its environmental impact.

Candy Tothill, head of corporate affairs, brands and marketing for Southern Sun, commented: “By combining our efforts with those of the Miss Earth South Africa programme, we aim to motivate individuals and communities to actively participate in environmental behaviours and initiatives that we believe are necessary for a more sustainable future.”

Winter is for friendcations

With temperatures dropping, the cold season might seem an unlikely time to travel within the country. However, the truth is that South Africa is a winter’s paradise. Each province displays winter differently from the next, giving travellers a variety of options depending on how you would like to experience the season and what type of vacation you want to enjoy with friends.

Many of us find ourselves staying indoors during the colder months, giving way to less socialising and for some, isolation. To keep the winter blues at bay it is important to keep up communication with friends and what better way to do this than with a winter friendcation?

Hiking and biking in the Valley of 1000 Hills

Across KwaZulu Natal in winter, the landscape is mostly dry with temperatures averaging around 23 degrees Celsius. Situated in between Durban and Pietermaritzburg is the scenic Valley of 1000 Hills named so because of the endless mountainous hills spread across the landscape.

Adventure lovers will enjoy bonding by taking up one of the many activities in the area that provide both a taste of adventure and scenic enjoyment. Hiking, biking, trail running, climbing and river activities are all options on a friendcation to this beautiful destination.

A summery winter safari

Believe it or not, winter is one of the best times to go on safari in South Africa. The Kruger National Park is known for being one of the world’s most iconic wildlife safari destinations in the world. It not only offers an excellent escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, but it’s also where you can find some of the best wildlife on the continent.

Anton Gillis, CEO of Kruger Gate Hotel comments that, “It is also one of the biggest nature conservation areas in the world, covering almost 20 000km². Escaping to the Park for a holiday can do wonders for mental health as an escape in nature has been proven to reduce feelings of stress and anxiety.”

For those that choose Kruger National Park as a friendcation destination, there is so much to do. Guided and self-drive game drives and wilderness walks are amongst the most popular activities, but there are also other ways to explore the park and its wildlife diversity.

Backpacking trails allow you to explore the park in a truly unique way, and there are various rest camps along the way to overnight at. Also, consider doing a birding safari where you can see over 500 different species of birds,” says Gillis.

The best time to visit the park is June to August, as mid-winter is the dry season and many animals will stay close to watering holes. This makes game spotting that much easier.

Self-care and a restful hideaway

Winter, for all its cloudiness and grey skies, gives us the feeling of wanting to slow down, preferably while relaxing under a warm blanket. If a slow winter hideaway sounds appealing to you, the perfect addition to it could be an element of self-care.

This might mean using the time away to switch off your phone, catch up on conversations, sleep, and book time to get cared for by professional wellness practitioners. A self-care holiday in winter should also include drinking lots of water and eating fresh fruit and vegetables. This helps to hydrate drier winter skin and boost the immune system.

“At the Radisson Blu Hotel Waterfront, we have an ESSE hydro-boost facial – a treatment that boosts and builds healthy skin naturally which is perfect for winter skin renewal,” notes Sabashni Naidoo, Managing Director at Amani Spa Radisson Blu Hotel Waterfront. “We also have a BABOR skin renewal treatment, which reinvigorates and instantly rejuvenates the skin.”

Retreats are also great activities to enjoy with friends and they usually incorporate self-care activities like yoga, meditation, and mindfulness practice.

A scenic family food adventure

Bonding with friends has to do with having many a heart-to-heart together and if the way to the heart is truly through the stomach, then bonding through enjoying food makes sense. The country is a food lover’s paradise and is more and more becoming a place to explore vegan and healthy eateries. Look for resources for healthy eateries like The Inside Guide or VeganSA’s vegan restaurant listings and go from there.

Before leaving for your trip plan your culinary exploration by booking either breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner somewhere new each day. Opt to have some meals at your accommodation to save on expenses and look for winter set menus to enjoy. Across Cape Town’s Winelands like Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, restaurants hold winter set menus with discounted prices of around R350 per person.

Depending on what type of travellers you and your friends are, you might want to enjoy a hikers’ holiday, safari, pampering retreat or adventure. Whichever option you choose, if you know where to look, there are options for everyone across South Africa.

Epson Makes Additional Investment in Space Robotics Development Startup GITAI

Seiko Epson Corporation (TSE: 6724, “Epson”) and its subsidiary Epson X Investment Corporation (“EXI”) recently made an additional investment in GITAI Japan Inc., a startup company that develops general-purpose space robots. The investment was made through their EP-GB Investment Limited Partnership.

Originating in Japan, GITAI is a startup that envisions providing safe and affordable labor in space. Their goal is to develop and sell versatile space robots that will serve as a workforce for tasks both inside and outside space stations, in Earth’s orbit, as well as on the Moon and Mars. Additionally, they aim to provide services in space.

With the acceleration of space development, including lunar resource development, Mars exploration, and the commercialization of the International Space Station (ISS), a rapid increase in various types of work within space is anticipated, such as the construction of new space stations, lunar bases, and Mars bases. How pinching pennies can buy beautiful memories – Profitroom

Travelling can be a life-changing adventure. Taking in the sights, sounds, tastes, and smells of a new city can be exhilarating but it can also cost a small fortune. Here are our top tips to help you cut costs without sacrificing comfort and enjoyment.

Book direct with your hotel

One of the most important things you can do to save money while travelling is to book directly with hotels instead of using online travel agencies (OTAs). OTAs are great when it comes to giving you a sense of what options you have when you’re going somewhere new, but hotels often have promotions and discounts that are only available when you book directly through their website. Booking directly with a hotel can also give you more flexibility with your reservation, allowing you to make changes or book additional options more easily. Many hotels offer discounts when staying with another property in the same group or sister hotel adding to the benefits of earning loyalty points and group discounts.

All about the discount

Hotels often help travellers save money by rewarding direct bookings. Many hotels offer discounts for longer stays or for booking in advance, as well as seasonal specials and packages that can help you save money on your trip. Becoming a member of a hotel`s loyalty club or giving marketing consent most often bag you an additional discount.

Aneli Gerber, Customer Success Manager at the award-winning booking solutions platform Profitroom says, “Being an avid traveller myself I always hunt for the best bargains long in advance. Profitroom realised this and provided hoteliers with a fantastic platform to offer their budget conscious guests many ways to capitalise on booking directly with the hotel making the most of your travel budget ”

Take advantage of free shuttles

It’s well known that metered taxis often take tourists for a ride. Transportation costs can quickly add up so consider using public transportation instead of taxis or rental cars.  Aside from being cheaper, public transport is a far more authentic way to engage with a new place. It’s also fun. Most hotels offer a free shuttle service to and from the airport or to some of the major local attractions putting some ching back into your pocket. These services are only bookable directly with the hotel and is another advantage of taking every possible opportunity to stretch your budget.

Plan in advance

Many mothers have been heard saying “Failing to plan is planning to fail”. If you are trying to save money, then planning is essential. Book your trip and flights well in advance. Always keep alternative dates in mind when planning your trip, especially during the peak season. Bank your loyalty points throughout the year to gain access to airport lounges, reduced airfares or upgrades and experience vouchers.

Despite what Instagram may try to tell you, making beautiful travel memories doesn’t require a yacht or a budget equal to the GDP of a small island. All you need is to keep your eyes open, do some planning and remember that  hotel websites are the best source for direct deals, discounts and value adds.

Boeing or Airbus? How aircraft rivalry is changing air travel

pexels-pixabay

The worldwide travel market has expanded considerably from just over 400,000 travellers in 1973 to 5.56 billion in 2019. Fighting for market share in this booming industry are two global commercial aircraft manufacturers: Boeing and Airbus.

“Most travellers do not usually have a specific preference between Boeing and Airbus aircraft when booking flights. Factors like ticket price, flight schedules, airline reputation, and total travel time tend to be more influential in their decision-making process,” explains Bonnie Smith, GM FCM. However, she adds that some passengers may prefer specific aircraft models because of factors such as cabin layout, seating comfort, noise levels, or even window size.

Here’s how the two manufacturers compare:

  1. Comfort and Design

Airbus tends to have a slightly wider fuselage, meaning that the cabin can feel more spacious, potentially offering more comfort, particularly in economy class. On the other hand, some travellers prefer the 787 Dreamliner from Boeing, which has larger windows and a design that reduces jet lag.

The design difference extends to the seat arrangement as well. For instance, on long-haul aircraft, Boeing often uses a 3-3-3 seat configuration, whereas Airbus may use a 3-3-3 or a 3-4-3 layout, which could affect personal space.

  1. In-Flight Technology

Both Boeing and Airbus continuously innovate to enhance the passenger experience. This includes better in-flight entertainment systems, cabin lighting, air filtration systems, and noise reduction technology. For example, the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 both boast advancements in these areas, which can contribute to a more enjoyable and comfortable flight.

  1. Safety

Both manufacturers have strong safety records, as safety is a top priority in the airline industry. However, high-profile incidents may raise concerns among some passengers. Boeing was long considered the aviation leader, largely due to its popular and best-selling 737 jetliner. Unfortunately, the manufacturer found itself facing significant challenges after two disastrous accidents in 2018 and 2019. It’s essential to understand that these incidents are infrequent compared to the total number of flights and that both Boeing and Airbus meet rigorous international safety standards.

  1. Eco-friendliness

In recent years, aviation has come under increased scrutiny for its environmental impact. In 2019 alone, the flight industry generated 900 million tons of carbon emissions, accounting for roughly 2% of total global emissions and 12% of emissions across all transportation sectors. And with world leaders tightening their stances on sustainability initiatives, both Airbus and Boeing have focused their efforts on developing more fuel-efficient, cost-effective aircraft.

In February 2022, Airbus announced its Airbus ZEROe initiative to be zero-emissions by 2023. In partnership with GE Aviation and CFM International, Airbus aims to test a direct combustion engine fuelled by hydrogen. The engine uses fuel cells to convert hydrogen into electricity, which then powers a propeller. In theory, this technology could power 100-passenger aircraft with a range of 1,000 nautical miles. The new fuel cell engine is set to be mounted on the manufacturer’s A380 Superjumbo, with test flights anticipated for 2026.

Boeing followed suit with the release of their own sustainability report in June 2022. The manufacturer aims to reach net-zero carbon emissions at their facilities and encourage the use of 100% SAF (sustainable aviation fuels) in their commercial airplanes by 2030. SAFs – which can be made from non-fossil feedstocks such as grain, waste fats, oils, and greases – can reportedly reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by up to 80%.

Like Airbus, Boeing is also continuing their research and development of electric and hydrogen aerospace technology. However, whereas Airbus has focused its efforts on engines, Boeing’s attention is set on making hydrogen more convenient for use.

So, what’s the verdict when choosing between the two?

In February 2023, both Boeing and Airbus received a historic order from Air India (the largest aircraft order ever made). The deal – which is not yet finalised – is estimated by the Wall Street Journal to be worth $85 billion and includes a total of 470 new planes split between the two manufacturers.

Boeing’s share of the order includes 220 planes, with 190 of them being 737 MAX jets, 20 being 787 Dreamliners, and 10 being the delayed new 777X line. Airbus, on the other hand, received an order of 250 planes, with 210 being A320neo family of narrow-body planes for domestic use and 40 being A350 wide-body jets for long-haul international flights.

“The jury remains out on which aircraft manufacturer trumps the other,” says Smith. “What is sure however is that like Coke vs. Pepsi, Ford vs. GM, and other legendary corporate rivalries, the intense competition between Airbus and Boeing will provide the aviation industry with the innovation it needs to thrive in this new, unprecedented territory – one that is evergreen and ever-growing. As such, we can expect to see new aircraft designs, buying patterns, and fuel sources that reflect the changing needs of air travel customers around the world. It’s an exciting time for the aviation industry – and Airbus and Boeing are at the forefront of it all.”

Victory for the Moti Group in case against AmaBhungane

Dondo Mogajane, CEO of the Moti Group

As was widely published on 02 June 2023, the Moti Group recently sought and obtained an interim interdict prohibiting amaBhungane from publishing any articles based on the documents stolen by former employee Clinton van Niekerk. This application was necessitated by the fact that amaBhungane have steadfastly refused to provide the Moti Group the right to view the documents that they are basing their articles on.

The Group has reason to believe that Clinton Van Niekerk significantly altered the documents he provided to amaBhungane, and could not answer its journalists’ questions fully without understanding the exact alterations that had been made. Again, these reasonable requests have been repeatedly denied.

It should be noted that at no point has amaBhungane denied that the documents are stolen or expressed or denied that it was obtained from Clinton van Niekerk. Instead, they have relied on the argument that they believe the documents are in the public interest. They have then chosen to use the documents despite the fact that theft is a continuing crime, and understanding that the documents used as the basis for their articles may be unreliable.

We have never considered gagging the media in any sense, but merely aim to stop amaBhungane from publishing articles based on stolen and altered documents. We have respect for the media in general, as evidenced by the fact that journalists were permitted to attend today’s session without objection, and that the Moti Group has not prevented any other media from reporting on the matter or upon the Group.

However, we stand by our right to retrieve our property and not be harassed by the media. The South African Constitution offers all members of society protection against theft and crime, and amaBhungane’s rights are not more important than any other citizen’s.

The urgency of our application was based on our belief that amaBhungane would imminently publish further negative articles using stolen and potentially altered information which would cause irreparable harm to the Group’s reputation.

As to the fact that we applied for an ex-parte hearing, the correspondence received from amaBhungane’s attorneys stated that the tabloid had no access to the documents in question.

However, in consideration of the recent articles published by their journalists, they have attached various of the stolen documentation, confirming that they were indeed in possession of and had access to this documentation. We have further conclusively proven through a professional forensic digital analysis by Paul O’Sullivan and Cyanre, who are known experts in the field, that most, if not all of the documents were downloaded off our server.

It is clear that amaBhungane was reluctant to allow the Moti Group access to the stolen documentation, and purposefully and dishonestly created the impression that they themselves could not access it. If they had been made aware of the application, they could have therefore very well turned to destroying, hiding the documentation or publishing the documents on the internet. If this was not their intention, they would have permitted the Moti Group or our attorneys to access to the stolen documentation or even copies thereof from the outset.

AmaBhungane has not denied that the stolen documents originated from the Moti Group, nor do they deny that they received the stolen documents from van Niekerk, who is the subject of a criminal investigation. AmaBhungane is well aware of the fact that the documents in their possession have been stolen from The Moti Group, yet they still persist in using said documents as the basis of their one-sided articles in order to push a certain narrative. For example, their articles specifically feature selected torn excerpts of documents to prevent them from being shown within context.

The Moti Group has not blocked any adverse reporting. The article published by amaBhungane on 02 June 2023 about the court order against them illustrates that they have not been blocked from reporting against the Moti Group and from reporting negatively about the company. They have merely been blocked from reporting on stolen documentation that they were never entitled to.

The SAPS is actively pursuing the investigation into van Niekerk, and further civil action will also be taken against the source of the documents in due course. These documents have not been “leaked” and there is no evidence or proof that Clinton van Niekerk is in witness protection. He can accordingly not be seen as a whistle-blower and should instead be regarded as a disgruntled former employee of the Moti Group who has stolen documents and unlawfully distributed these to various third parties with the sole intention to cause severe hardship and prejudice for his former employer.

The documents stolen by Van Niekerk are confidential and intellectual property belonging to the Moti Group which have been unlawfully altered and tampered with in the interests of stirring a damaging media campaign against the company. The documents have also been taken out of context in order to portray a one-sided narrative to the detriment of The Moti Group.

In our previous correspondence with amaBhungane they have consistently denied having access or control over the documents, and yet they are able to publish selected samples of documents. It appears that amaBhungane “hid” the documents on an overseas server deliberately in order to prevent any civil action against them by the target of their media campaign, which in this instance is the Moti Group.

AmaBhungane, by continually publishing subjective articles against the Group, have now stepped over the line into harassment. Violating the standards of the Press Code of Conduct, they have irresponsibly published personal information which is decidedly not in the public’s interest, such as private banking details. Simultaneously, they have continuously denied the Moti Group the right to proper and fair response by refusing us the opportunity to see, verify or refute the stolen documents that they are using as the basis of their sensationalised stories.

We strongly believe that no South African would want their bank details, personal information or confidential information published by a journalist with a vendetta. amaBhungane rely on the Press Code of Conduct, and yet they don’t follow their own “rules”. The Press Code specifically states that journalists must obtain information legally and fairly, and prohibits them from publishing sensitive information if it is not in the public interest.

Ultimately, amaBhungane has consistently infringed upon the rights of the Moti Group by reporting upon stolen documents. While the terms of the court order directing amaBhungane to return the documents may have been amended, it is telling that they were not able to have the case overturned given the seriousness of the matters in question. AmaBhungane were also not able to prove urgency and were not granted a cost order.

The Moti Group has great respect for journalists and the unique rights afforded to them through the Constitution and the Press Code. But this should never override or supress any citizen’s rights in terms of the Constitution, namely with regards to their property and theft.

One million LED light bulbs saves the Shoprite Group R346 million in electricity costs

The Shoprite Group has reduced its electricity consumption by 11.8% following the installation of 1 001 932 energy-efficient LED lightbulbs across 1 647 of its supermarkets and distribution centres nationwide.

This has eased pressure on the national electricity grid as well as generated savings of 164 million kWh and R346 million in electricity costs for the Group during its 2022/2023 financial year.

“By taking a proactive stance in energy planning, the Shoprite Group has bolstered its stores’ energy resilience to withstand both anticipated and unforeseen disruptions in energy supply and electricity tariffs,” said Sanjeev Raghubir, Sustainability Manager for the Shoprite Group.

The retailer’s investment in its LED replacement project, which commenced in 2017, totals
R371.1 million to date, including R48.7 million over the past year.

“LED lamps are typically 50% more energy efficient than fluorescent lamps, and we encourage everyone to play their part in reducing their energy consumption to stabilise our national grid,” adds Raghubir.

It forms part of the Group’s strategy to improve energy efficiency as much as possible and then to use renewable energy across its operations including distribution centres, trucks and trailers.

In addition to the LED installations, the retailer has more than doubled its installed capacity of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems over the past two years. Currently, 71 sites covering 174,534 m² are equipped with solar PV, resulting in a total installed capacity of 32,321 kWp. This is sufficient to power 4,554 average sized households annually.

The Shoprite Group aims to power 25% of its operations with renewable energy within the next five years as part of its commitment to reach science-based emission targets by 2050.

Installing solar PV on trailers is also a priority for the retailer as it enables drivers to switch off truck ignitions at delivery locations, reducing exhaust pollution while keeping the cold chain intact.

In 2022, it expanded the number of trailers in its fleet equipped with solar PV to 1,041.

These interventions have helped to reduce the Group’s electricity costs, increased efficiency, and enhanced business resilience.

We are calling on everyone to become a Tiny Owls Champion by signing up to make a regular monthly donation of as little as R100. Your contribution will help Tiny Owls take a planned, long-term approach to caring for these precious little ones, support the dedicated staff who work tirelessly to provide love, care, and medical attention, and ensure the home’s sustainability.

About Tiny Owls Baby Home

Tiny Owls is run by founders Kim and Wayne, who trained to be temporary safety care parents. Most of the babies are received from private and state social workers and are either abandoned or relinquished due to extreme poverty, substance abuse, or violence. They generally arrive a few days old — some with ailments or trauma requiring special medical attention — and stay for an average of six months.
