How Vlogging went from family fun to a World Of Content Creation

For many of us, there is a good chance that the first vlogger we ever met was long before the YouTube era. It was probably an uncle or maybe even an older sister. Whoever it was, the first vlogger we met was almost certainly that one family member who always had a camcorder strapped to one hand. Back then, the name vlogging may not have existed, but millions of households across the globe knew who the family content creator was, and that person’s camcorder was probably big and clunky by today’s standards.

Shaky Beginnings

The first vlog is widely believed to have started on January 2, 2000, by Adam Kontras when he posted a video alongside a blog entry to document his cross-country move to Los Angeles. It would later become the longest-running video blog in history. Since then, we have come leaps and bounds. In the early days, vlogging resembled a bumpy ride on a pothole-riddled road. Armed with handheld cameras, aspiring content creators struggled to find the right balance between capturing the moment and remaining authentic. Awkward angles, shaky shots, and distorted audio plagued their videos, but they persevered. In 2005, YouTube burst onto the scene, and the growing pool of vloggers finally had a platform where they could easily share their work with the world.

A Continuing Evolution

As time passed, vloggers grew more sophisticated. The introduction of flip-out screens allowed them to see themselves while recording, saving countless takes from ending up on the virtual cutting room floor. Improved autofocus technology ensured that vloggers remained in sharp focus, enhancing the overall viewing experience. But there was still something missing—a camera that understood the unique needs of vloggers, a camera that could capture both their personality and the world around them with finesse.

The rapid improvement of technology and the increasingly widespread availability of vlogging equipment forced manufacturers to look closely at how to go from simply making a good content creation camera to designing something truly remarkable and how their product could best meet evolving demands.

When Vloggers Needed A Wider Shot, Sony Said “Watch This”

If you have ever tried vlogging with your smartphone or a camera with a narrow lens, then you will be familiar with the frustration of trying to fit everything into the shot. Cameras of the past struggled with this. Designed to capture the world the way you want, the Sony ZV-1 II lets you shoot everything from group selfies to sprawling cityscapes with ease. Its wide-angle 18mm lens can capture a wider field of view than the human eye, so you can easily fit everyone or everything in the frame. Whether you’re indoors or out, the wide-angle lens turns everyday scenes into dynamic footage and helps ensure that you spend less time editing.

Size Matters

Cameras of the past needed a gym membership to operate. They were heavy and bulky, making shooting, travelling and generally moving around a mission. The fact that it weighs less than 300g and was designed to take up as little space as possible means modern vloggers can take the ZV-1 II any and everywhere. Combining this with its powerful image stabilisation technology also means that the shaky footage that used to typify vlogging is a thing of the past.

Always Focused

Equipped with cutting-edge autofocus technology, the ZV1-II knows how to make vloggers shine. Its autofocus technology locks onto their eyes, tracking their movements effortlessly, even in busy and unpredictable environments. Now, they can maintain crystal-clear focus, no matter where their vlogs take them. Blurred backgrounds with stunning bokeh effects are just a click away, making every shot a cinematic masterpiece.

Sounds Like Progress

Audio problems are also a thing of the past. Thanks to Sony’s ZV1-II innovative built-in mic, new-age vloggers can convey their message with utmost clarity. Background noise becomes a distant memory because of the camera’s ability to prioritize the vlogger’s voice, ensuring that viewers don’t miss a single word.

Vlogging has come a long way since the days of bulky camcorders with tapes in them, and as the world of vlogging has continued to evolve, one thing has remained constant: the importance of authenticity and the desire to capture lives in all their glory.

SA jetsetters travel less, spend more

Global travel analysts are predicting that the good old days of business travel might be long gone, and South Africa is no exception. The country’s corporate travel scene has changed due to a combination of post-pandemic challenges, load shedding and rising inflation. According to Bonnie Smith, GM of Corporate Traveller, their latest travel data reflects a major trend among South African business travellers – they’re hitting the road less often but spending more.

The data shows that the number of travel bookings is down slightly in the first six months of 2023 when compared to the same period in 2019. However, the number of room nights is significantly up and has in fact increased by 88%.  “This trend indicates that business travellers are opting to stay longer at their destinations and planning more meetings during their trips,” explains Smith. “We’re seeing business travellers clustering meetings to achieve more on each trip.”

Interestingly, despite the decrease in bookings, the Corporate Traveller research shows a significant increase in spending in the first 6 months of 2023 as compared to the same period in 2019. These increases have been observed both in international and domestic accommodation. Other travel components have also seen substantial rise in spend: the transactional value for domestic flights has increased by 151%, international flights by 112%, domestic car rentals by 62%, and international car rentals by 224%.

The reasons for these increases in spend while bookings remain constrained are varied. It seems that business travellers today are leaning towards more premium services. Instead of booking economy flights or standard hotel rooms, they may be choosing business class flights or luxury accommodations.

Of course, increased prices also play a significant role in the surge in travel spend. Prices for accommodation, flights and car rental are up across the line after the pandemic.

The increase in travel spend comes at a time when companies in South Africa are feeling the pressure of load shedding and inflation. The changing travel landscape inspired Corporate Traveller to examine the complexities of business travel spending trends in South Africa and globally in a new white paper, “Economic Jet Lag: Understanding the Impact of SA’s Economy on Business Travel”. The report reveals how economic shifts have influenced business travel.

The report reveals that power outages in South Africa aren’t just leaving people in the dark; they’re reshaping the future of work and business travel. Persistent load shedding is putting the brakes on the hybrid workplace trend, disrupting virtual connectivity, and shaking the foundation of online business events.

South Africa is pivoting from the global trend, trading in digital workspaces for good old-fashioned offices, thanks to Eskom’s power failures. As Smith notes, face-to-face meetings are poised for a resurgence, all thanks to the struggle to keep the lights on. Power solutions are a financial black hole, forcing companies to opt for the certainty of in-person dealings. Load shedding, ironically, is giving business travel an unexpected boost, making each trip a strategic play for maximum ROI, as companies scramble to maintain productivity in the dark.

Meanwhile, inflation has skyrocketed, with South Africa’s central bank raising its benchmark rate to a 14-year high. This has gnawed away at the purchasing power of citizens and placed a burden on households leaving them feeling the squeeze from power shortages and energy price hikes. Inflation drives up travel costs, affecting accommodation, transportation, and meals.

The solution to keep costs in check? Tracking spending habits and embracing cost-saving tactics have become crucial for businesses planning travel budgets, says Smith.

“Working with a travel management company (TMC) that has the tech, buying power, and expertise is key. With business travel costs continuing to rise, it is a good investment – essentially one that pays for itself,” says Smith.

Smith is optimistic for the future and says she sees a potential resurgence in 2024 as the economy improves and businesses regain confidence. However, this doesn’t mean it’s ‘business travel as usual.’ The travel spend trends we see emerging will keep both business travellers and travel managers on their feet.

“Now is the perfect moment to take action, rethink the way we do things, and lead the way into the future. As the world of business travel keeps evolving, companies need to be flexible, creative, and attentive to the preferences of the upcoming generation of travellers.”

Flight Centre General Manager Antoinette Turner said the new “Captain’s Pack” has been put together with customer desire in mind.

“We’ve looked at our data and customer feedback globally over the last four years and come back with a value pack based on current customer needs,” says Turner.

“The Captain’s Pack contains many items that are essential to hassle-free travelling that offer peace of mind, such as lost baggage tracking and cover, a travel insurance upgrade, and a cancellation fee waiver.

“We’re particularly proud to offer a Family Bonus that allows kids accompanying an adult with a Captain’s Pack to share its benefits at no extra cost.”

The Captain’s Pack ranges from between R150 and R350 and went on sale on 22 August 2023. You can purchase the Captain’s Pack when confirming travel at your nearest Flight Centre store.

“Our first goal is to plant one million trees in the first year,” Turner said.

Summer homes are made in winter

Yes, you heard it right! It may sound counterintuitive, but winter is the perfect time to begin preparing your home so that it is ripe and ready to shine bright in the summer sun.

In her many years of experience as a top Cape Town interior designer, behaviour specialist, and owner of the Kim Williams Design studio, Kim Williams has learned that the best thing about being hunkered indoors during the cold winter is the downtime it gives to renovate, redecorate, and rejuvenate your home spaces.

“In winter, we naturally tend to prepare our spaces for comfort, warmth, and protection from the harsh elements. There’s plenty of candles, fluffy blankets, throws and textured carpets for added layers. Even our seating areas are rearranged so that we get maximum exposure to that crackling fireplace,” Kim says.

Despite this period of cocooning, there is also the prospect of seeing brighter, longer days during the approaching summer. In an exclusive interview, she explains four of the ways she goes about crafting the perfect summer oasis.

Reconnecting with colour

Interior spaces are now becoming more expressive and personal which has transformed our relationship with colour into a beautiful love story. There is no denying that colour brings joy and peace, a sense of fun and life.

In a recent re-do of the Coleman AirBnB Studio, I used a soft pastel colour palette that inspired feelings of being outdoors, drinking in views of the ocean and being washed over with feelings of serenity and calmness.

Tones of turquoise and apple greens combined with a beautiful ocean themed wallpaper and pops of gold on the bathroom vanity amalgamate to create a modern and peaceful atmosphere that engages your senses but feels harmonious at the same time.

Creating more with less

Like it or not, the concept of micro living is here to stay, especially with the escalating property prices, making it more costly to buy more space. Our only alternative is to shape our existing spaces and create premium dual living areas that turn previously unused space into practical, functional, and integrated parts of the home.

This is exactly what we did in a bedroom recently designed in Constantia where a previously unused space in the closet was transformed into a glamorous dressing area. We focused on increasing functionality and being mindful of waste  by building on what existed rather than create something entirely new.

Although creating space is a particular challenge in a micro space it isn’t impossible. We had to remove the ceiling in the loft area of the Coleman AirBnB Studio. so that the extra ceiling height space could be used to house an additional sleeping and relaxation area.

We also added a dry wall in front of the bathroom to create privacy to the open plan lounge area, as well as crafted a discreet space for laundry. I used colour to help zone off the separate spaces and planted furniture strategically to create distinctive areas for cooking, eating, working, relaxing, and using the bathroom.

Again, the unused space under the staircase was also given a new purpose. By just adding a built-in desk, the area can now double up as either a workstation, extra serving or eating areas. A server was also added behind the sofa for extra counter space or to serve as an additional bar, which creates even greater functionality.

Being sensitive to small joys
It is often difficult to find a momentum of calm in a world that feels chaotic, busy, and over-polluted with information and stuff. This chaos plays with our creativity, and use of colour, producing layered spaces that are a medley of old and new items.

It’s called expressiveness and it helps ensure our spaces are not just personal to us, but they exude happiness, peacefulness, energy, and stimulation. You can see the bold use of colours and textures in the Constantia bedroom which goes against the typical neutral colours that are usually used in a bedroom.

Instead of simply copying and pasting design styles and principles, these unique and vivid colours combine with soft curtaining and foliage prints to add a playfulness and sexiness to the space while still retaining a harmonious feel that is at one in nature.

Establishing a grounding Grounding is about using a space to connect us to a sense of tranquillity and peace that makes us feel happy. Winter is the perfect time to recharge and establish a disconnection to useless information and instead, connecting to what evokes a positive emotion within us – be it nature, colour, or sentimental items.

The existing light green of the cupboards in the Constantia bedroom, combined with red embroidered headboard was the source of inspiration for this space but I added navy to continue the colour journey, grounded the red and brightened the green. I used texture in the new wallpaper and fabrics to engage the senses and make it feel luxurious and peaceful, then repeated the colour journey into the new dressing room space.

Taking your home from winter to summer isn’t difficult but the trick is not to wait until the last minute to start preparing. Take advantage of the serenity and calmness during winter to carefully plan and execute your perfect summer haven. A few small tweaks to your layout and paying attention to details like colours and textures, can help you create a beautiful and welcoming home that you’ll enjoy all summer.

With Reels and TikToks seen as the new face of advertising, the content creation industry is booming, and the formation of an event property like this has helped to formalise and legitmise the industry, giving content creators a ‘place’ to get recognised and celebrated. It has also created an ecosystem for emerging creators to get access to those established in their field.

To this end, Samsung Galaxy is giving two emerging content creators the opportunity to co-host the TikTok LIVE from the purple carpet and win the recently launched Samsung Z Flip 5 worth R29,999[NM&CMP/E1] .

If you think you’ve got what it takes to co-host awards’ purple carpet, unfold your fun side and interview the stars on the night, hop on over to TikTok, act out the questions you’d ask nominees, and post your submission using the hashtags #DSTVCCA and #JoinTheFlipSide and it could be you going live. Silver surfers, it’s time for a local adventure of a lifetime

Kampus

Adventure knows no age limit, and for baby boomers South Africa presents a plethora of exhilarating bucket list travel destinations. With your working and limited leave days behind you, your travel options both locally and internationally are vast and diverse.

According to Hospitality Net the baby boomer generation is currently having a great impact on the hospitality and tourism industries. These travellers finally have time and money on their hands to travel, with some retirees even able to take up to four or more trips a year!

Research by Expedia shows that baby boomers have an unwavering sense of adventure, meaning they’re not content with low-key holidays but instead are after experiential travel – whereby a traveller prioritises “experiencing” a destination by engaging with local customs, culture, and cuisine.

And while many a tourist’s bucket list contains exotic wonders in far flung parts of the world, Mzansi has a treasure trove of splendid destinations that are right on our doorstep.

Road trip along the Panorama Route

Road trip warriors that love setting off on the open road are spoilt for choice with the many options offered South Africa’s vast scenic countryside. The enchanting Panorama Route, which meanders through the Mpumalanga highlands, or the north-eastern section of the Great Escarpment of the Drakensberg, are both known for their scenic beauty. Relish these incredible regions panoramic views, rugged cliffs and lush vegetation on a relaxing road trip.

A visit to the Panorama Route would not be complete without stopping off at the iconic Blyde River Canyon, which is the largest green canyon in the world and third largest canyon globally. These 26 kilometres of serenity attract avid bird lovers as it’s the only site in South Africa where the rare Taita Falcon breeds. Other rare birds in the canyon include the Blue Swallow, Southern Bald Ibis and the Brown Scrub Robin. Amidst the tropical foliage, spend an afternoon at one of the canyon’s inviting picnic areas or braai facilities.

The canyon’s beloved, must-see natural attractions include Pinnacle Rock, a 30-metre quartzite tower, and God’s Window, where on a clear lucky day you can see Mozambique. Heaps of travellers to Mpumalanga combine a trip to the Panorama Route with a visit to the Kruger National Park.

Top tip: If you are going to book a rental car for this adventure make sure to check the comfortability of the seats and that you will have enough leg room as you will likely spend hours in the car on your road trip.

The Kruger National Park

The Kruger National Park became South Africa’s first national park in 1926 and is home to the world-famous Big Five (lions, leopards, black rhinoceros, African bush elephant and African buffalo) which puts a trip to the park on many a bucket list. Brimming with exquisite wildlife and untouched nature the park is the perfect place to unwind in and make unforgettable memories.

Located ideally in the Greater Kruger Conservancy, bordering the famous Paul Kruger gate, the Kruger Gate Hotel is a convenient and inviting base from which you can explore the Kruger. You can make your stay in the Kruger as relaxing or as busy as you please, with guided safaris, spa treatments in the wild, refreshing swims in a pool overlooking wandering wildlife right in front of you and sip cocktails or local wines on a game-viewing deck.

“The Kruger National Park is considered by many gloablly to be one of the Earth’s natural wonders that everyone should visit. It’s incredible to see all visitors to the park nurture their sense of adventure and love for nature, and we are mindful of accommodating to any guest need. Anyone at any stage of life can find serenity in the bush. Older visitors with particular needs can be rest assured that our property has wheelchair ramps and railings to assist them throughout their stay. You could explore the park in your own vehicle, or if you would feel more comfortable in the hands of an expert guide you can opt for an open-air guided safari experience,” explains Anton Gillis, CEO at Kruger Gate Hotel.

Top tip: During a trip to the Kruger National Park you may spend more time than usual outdoors so consider wearing UV-protective clothing, sunglasses and hats.

Plettenberg Bay and Tsitsikamma

As years of hard work has given way to a well-earned era of leisure, Plettenberg Bay with its awe-inspiring Atlantic Ocean coastline is a relaxing destination. Marine wildlife lovers would be especially excited to know that in May this year the World Cetacean Alliance (WCA) announced that Plettenberg Bay was announced as a Whale Heritage Site, making it the third site in our country and one of seven fully accredited sites globally. This idyllic bay has seen an influx of visitors hoping to witness the majestic whales in action. June through to September is when Humpback and Southern Right whales migrate to the bay to breed so the winter months is an ideal season to visit.

Located 483kms from Plettenberg Bay,Tsitsikamma, which is Khoi for “place of abundant or sparkling water”, is a region that boasts pristine wilderness and an the inviting Indian Ocean. There is something for every type of traveller in Tsitsikamma, whether you’re a hiking enthusiast interested in the region’s various trails or looking to embrace the local creative culture at the Storms River Arts & Crafts centre. Travellers interested in the quirkier attractions might also appreciate the eclectic ambiance of Marilyn’s 60’s Diner, where the neon rimmed signage and retro decor will transport you back to a time when Elvis was topping the radio charts, or the Tsitsikamma Wolf Sanctuary which is South Africa’s only non-profit centre for wolves.

Top tip: Consider booking guided boat tours in Plettenberg Bay; the expert tour operators will give you a better chance of witnessing these magnificent aquatic mammals up close and impart interesting whale facts.
