The influence of money in a marriage

0

Money can have a significant influence on a marriage. Financial issues are one of the leading causes of stress and conflict in a relationship, and if not managed properly, they can lead to serious problems. Here are some of the ways in which money can affect a marriage:

  1. Power dynamics: If one partner earns significantly more money than the other, it can create an imbalance of power in the relationship. The higher-earning partner may feel entitled to make more decisions, and the lower-earning partner may feel disempowered and resentful.
  2. Financial stress: Financial stress can cause tension and anxiety in a relationship, and may lead to arguments and disagreements. This can be especially true if one or both partners are struggling to make ends meet, or if they have different views on how money should be spent.
  3. Differences in spending habits: If one partner is a spender and the other is a saver, it can create conflict over how money should be allocated. This can be compounded if the spender is also the higher earner, as they may feel entitled to spend more money.
  4. Hidden debts or financial secrets: If one partner is hiding debts or financial secrets from the other, it can erode trust in the relationship and cause significant problems.
  5. Goals and priorities: Couples may have different goals and priorities when it comes to money, such as saving for a house or retirement, paying off debt, or splurging on luxury items. If these goals are not aligned, it can create tension and disagreements.

To avoid or manage these issues, it’s important for couples to communicate openly and honestly about their financial situation, set joint financial goals, and work together to create a budget and spending plan that works for both partners. It can also be helpful to seek professional financial advice or counseling if needed.

How the new MacBook Pro M2 works its magic for 3D animator RobynO

0

Art and technology go hand in hand for this busy creative professional

RobynO, based in Johannesburg, is an illustrator, 3D animator, motion graphics designer, and YouTube creator by profession. Her boundless imagination and her MacBook Pro M2, brings all her creations to life in bold line and vivid colour. MacBook Pro M2 is the latest in the line of Apple’s revolutionary SoC (System on a Chip) workhorses, built for speed, power, all-day battery life, and dazzling graphic capabilities.

“It’s got an eight core CPU and a 10 core GPU,” says Robyn, “which is very necessary for what I end up doing with my work. For Robyn, the magic lies in the way the MacBook Pro M2 meets and exceeds the most gruelling demands of her everyday work.

Rendering 3D imagery and animation calls for intense processing power, coupled with the need for a crisp, high-definition Retina display. “When you’re working in graphics, you really need those saturated colours and that definition and that clarity,” says Robyn. “So that was something that I was really impressed by.”

Robyn was also amazed to discover the ease with which she could use her iPad as a second display, extending the virtuosity of her home-based Mac ecosystem.

Much of Robyn’s day is taken up with online briefs and meetings, and she has been equally impressed with the quality of the MacBook Pro M2 webcam and microphone.

More than anything, though, it’s the portability of the MacBook Pro M2 that has extended Robyn’s boundaries as a creative worker. “I can edit anywhere I go,” she says. “I could be on holiday and I can take it with me and do my editing. I can sit on the couch at night and do my editing. I’m not tethered to my desk like I was before. I felt like I was stuck in a cave.”

That newfound freedom only adds to Robyn’s appreciation of the Mac as a work of art in its own right. “I feel like I’m one of the cool kids,” she says. “I can go to a coffee shop and just whip it out, and I’m like, ‘I’m one of y’all!’”

And when she works her magic, conjuring creatures and humans out of the ether, giving them the gift of light, shade, colour, and character, Robyn herself feels transported by the fusion of art and technology. “Just the experience of having MacBook M2,” she says, “is definitely something that has changed my life.”

5 things you didn’t know about Africa’s most loved destinations

0

Unlike traditional tourism awards or surveys, the Tourism Sentiment Index (TSI) sources data from more than 500,000 online, peer-to-peer communication platforms, including all major social networks and review sites, to deliver the clearest picture of what people are talking about and writing about when it comes to travel, tourism, and the hottest destinations around the globe.

The latest TSI data is in, with five African destinations proving to be crowd favourites. It is no surprise that the Maldives, Seychelles, Mauritius and Zanzibar stood out as winners for beach holidays, while South Africa’s Stellenbosch, Cape Town and Hermanus were ranked highly for their food, restaurants and wildlife, respectively.

We asked travel industry and destination experts to weigh in on the accolades and share things you probably didn’t know about the African destinations currently feeling the love.

Cape Town – home to cuisine over 350 years old

Cape Town restaurants regularly feature in The World’s 50 Best Restaurant Awards – with Fyn Restaurant earning the plum spot of 37 in 2022.

Robert More, custodian and CEO of MORE Family Collection, who recently launched Upper Union Restaurant in Cape Town, notes that Malay Cape Cuisine has become synonymous with fine dining in the Mother City. “Chefs are drawn to the complex combination of strong, spicy and aromatic flavours. It’s no surprise that Malay cuisine is used and interpreted in many Cape Town restaurants, including Upper Union, which is a perfect addition to our globally inspired menu,” says More.

“During colonial times, many Malaysian, Indonesian and East African slaves who were taken to the Cape in the 17th and 18th centuries had limited access to their traditional ingredients and therefore had to improvise. This has resulted in a cuisine which is solely unique to the Cape, and steeped in history and tradition,” says More.

Seychelles – only 1% of the country is solid land

With over 115 islands but only 459 square kilometres of land, an astounding 99% of this paradise is made up of water. And the island nation has taken impressive steps to protect it, designating 30% of its waters as Marine Protected Areas. “We’re not surprised that Seychelles ranked fourth in the world in the Tourism Sentiment Index. Seychelles’ water means everything to our people and the economy, and we are doing everything possible we protect it with our new Marine Spatial Plan,” says the Principal Secretary for Environment, Dennis Matatiken.

Matatiken continues: “Visitors to Seychelles are likely familiar with its gorgeous coral-filled reefs, but few know that these same waters act as a stopping point for whale sharks migrating from east to west each year. These majestic creatures make their way to Australia annually, taking advantage of this idyllic oasis before continuing their journey.”

Stellenbosch – the birthplace of a unique wine variety

Known for its incredible selection of wine farms, Stellenbosch is a mecca for oenophiles worldwide – hence it scooping the 34th spot in the Tourism Sentiment Index 2023. It took top honours at the 2022 International Wine and Spirit Competition in 2022 with top trophies for both best red and white wine producers of the year. With more than 200 wine farms to choose from, visitors are spoilt for choice when seeking out their ideal winery experience And in the case of Pinotage, it’s one you can’t replicate anywhere else in the world. That’s because scientist Abraham Perold created Pinotage in 1925 in Stellenbosch. He crossed the Cinsaut and Pinot Noir varietals, explains Visit Stellenbosch CEO Jeanneret Momberg.

“Pinotage wine is becoming increasingly popular as wine drinkers worldwide discover its dark fruit and oak flavours. We’ve been excited to see that as it has increased in popularity, more visitors come to Stellenbosch on Pinotage Pilgrimages,” says Momberg. She notes Kanonkop Estate, Beyerskloof and Kaapzicht are prime examples of wine farms in Stellenbosch benefitting by the worldwide “passion for pinotage”.

Hermanus  – has a resident whale crier

While South Africa’s game lodges and reserves are world-renowned, Hermanus wins bragging rights as a wildlife destination of choice thanks to the majestic southern right whales that are drawn to its shallow, sandy covers to breed. “The unique geography of the shoreline of Hermanus means that these gentle giants can easily be observed from the land – or your hotel room, in the case of The Marine Hotel, which overlooks the whale sanctuary,” says Giltedge Group CEO Murray Gardiner.

It was 1991 when Hermanus first made history as the only town on Earth to have its very own Whale Crier. The tradition began informally, with a local alerting tourists of whale sightings, and soon became officially recognised, explains Gardiner. “Thanks to this remarkable innovation, everyone visiting Hermanus is now treated to a unique experience,” he says.

Mauritius – it has more than one island

The Republic of Mauritius is renowned for its idyllic tropical beaches on the coastline, approximately 330 km long. But the country of Mauritius includes the island of Mauritius, Rodrigues and the constituent outer islands of Agaléga and St. Brandon.

Antoinette Turner, GM of Flight Centre South Africa, offers her insights into Rodrigues, a gorgeous destination with just a short boat or plane trip away from Mauritius. She explains, “this is an area of incredible beauty that remains largely undisturbed and unspoilt and is a must-visit for those keen on water sports”.

In Nasty C’s episode of E! VIP he opens up on his music career: “Some of my fans made
comments that I don’t rap enough in Zulu but it doesn’t really bother me – I’ve said countless times that the people that inspired me to start rapping in the first place make music in English, that’s what I connected to and helped me learn to express myself. I wasn’t a talkative kid, I was an introvert, I didn’t have a lot of friends. Writing music and rapping was my first form of expression, it just happened to be in English and I stuck to that”.

Nasty C then discusses his childhood: “I’ve always had stepmothers growing up, it’s just
something I thought every other family went through. I was like, “If you lose a parent you getanother one” so it didn’t really affect me until I was about 16,17,18 when I started being very inquisitive about what happened to my mother and how she passed”.
He also opens up about his acting career: “I’ve always wanted to be on a big screen, whether it’s music videos, TV performances, acting, anything like that. I’ve always been a huge fan of moviessince I was a kid.

Being in Blood and Water was amazing, it was a lot of fun. It made me respect actors even more than I already did. I always thought it was easy and you just lie and playpretend but there’s way more to it than that. I don’t know if I want to take acting up as a career,it’s not for me”.

Check Point Software launches Infinity Spark

0

February 15, 2023 Check Point® Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ: CHKP), a leading provider of cybersecurity solutions globally, has today introduced Check Point Infinity Spark, a threat prevention solution that delivers industry leading AI security and integrated connectivity to small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs).

Infinity Spark offers enterprise grade security across networks, email, office, endpoint, and mobile devices. With a 99.7% malware catch rate, it protects SMBs against advanced threats including phishing, ransomware, credential theft and DNS attacks.

“SMBs have shown a willingness to invest in cybersecurity to safeguard and support business growth especially as they adapt to the hybrid working model. However, with a growing shortage of skilled cyber professionals these businesses need a solution that offers full coverage protection without complicated onboarding processes. Infinity Spark addresses this opportunity in the market by consolidating security into an ‘all-in-one’ platform with a simple monthly price plan.” said Eyal Manor, Vice President of Product Management at Check Point Software.

The Check Point Infinity Spark suite delivers:

  • Industry-Leading Threat Prevention: Check Point Infinity Spark provides 99.7% prevention catch rate to protect SMBs against phishing, ransomware, credential theft and DNS attacks.
  • Enterprise grade all-in-one SMB Security Suite: SMBs are struggling to properly secure their critical assets, making them a growing target for cybercriminals. Designed to protect SMBs across the network, mobile, endpoint, email, and office.
  • New Quantum Spark SMB Next Generation Firewalls: Infinity Spark features Check Point’s Quantum Spark 1500 Pro Series, the industry’s first gateway with integrated artificial intelligence security, 5G, SD-WAN and Wi-Fi 6. Check Point Quantum Spark Pro delivers 3 times faster Wi-Fi, high-speed 1 Gbps WAN connection with 5G and integrated SD-WAN for better application performance and maximum uptime.

Eyal added: “In some cases, an SMB may turn to a Managed Service Provider (MSP) to defend them against cyberattacks, with many paying a premium for their cybersecurity services. Infinity Spark can decrease MSP operational costs by 50% through unified multi-tenant management, integrating four consoles into a single dashboard with zero touch provisioning and scalable cloud services to support an unlimited number of SMBs.”

“Hybrid work has complicated SMB security and created demand for a simplified and consolidated security platform.  Check Point Software offers a unique comprehensive security suite specifically built to enable SMBs and MSSPs to protect networks, devices, and applications against cyber-attacks, while reducing the complexity of deployment and management. The Infinity Spark security suite is designed to provide SMBs with a simple, affordable, and integrated security solution right out of the box. This solution spans network, cloud, mobile and endpoint security, including advanced threat prevention to make it easy to protect SMBs from security risks.”, said Pete Finalle, Security Research Manager, IDC

“Infinity Spark is a great and affordable way to offer end-to-end security for our small and midsized business customers. It provides complete protection for their employees both in and outside of the office. We have seen a significant reduction in our operational overhead with Check Point’s unified management console.” Said Emiel Harbers, CTO at Harbers ICT, The Netherlands.

Six ways to shape lasting change for 2023 and beyond

0

With the chaos of January out of way, we are now well and truly settled into the rhythm and routine of a brand-new year. A new year is always a good time to set new resolutions, targets, and goals that you hope to achieve over the next few months.

In a corporate environment, creating lasting change is crucial if managers want to maintain sustainable growth. Lasting change is essentially modifications that are widely accepted by and fully integrated into the organisational culture and processes, resulting in a new status quo. Not only does it ensure that the business remains consistent in their processes and management structure, but lasting change also provides for a constant review of how you approach and prepare to tackle challenges.Mariet Visser, coach, trainer, and the co-founder of We Do Change – is on a mission to empower others to transform and enrich their work lives with lasting change. She shares six invaluable tips on how businesses can do exactly that during this year.

1. Stay abreast of technology

The business and economic landscape is constantly evolving, fuelled by a growing emphasis on digital transformation and globalisation. Added to this are the needs and expectations of your customer which are also changing with the pace of technology. To remain relevant and retain a competitive edge, organisations must adapt and respond as quickly and efficiently as possible to meet the fast-paced changes that come with living in an inter-connected world.

2. Be deliberate and measured

Approach change in phases or incrementally, rather than all at once. This will lessen the shock and not overwhelm the organisation and its people, and thus mitigate the likelihood of change fatigue. Lasting change is more likely to be sustainable if the changes that have been introduced are accepted and adopted by the people in your organisation. This will help create a sense of positivity and excitement, and lead to increased performance and a retention of talent.

Remember to regularly reflect on the changes and refine and adjust where necessary to ensure that they are sustainable and are achieving the desired results.

3. Avoid a culture shock

The last few years have presented us with unprecedented and unusual challenges, leading to a fundamental shift in our working habits and lifestyle. Many businesses have embraced the convenience of remote work, but it is now crucial that we pause and reflect on its effects and understand and evolve our ways of working. Organisations will require a fresh collaborative approach to employee engagement, fostering connection and a sense of belonging, to accommodate these shifts.

4. Adopt a safe-to-fail manner

Lasting change can be established by gaining agreement on the opportunities for improvement, brainstorming small yet measurable experiments to achieve the desired results, and executing such experiments in a safe-to-fail manner.

These are essentially small experiments which are tested in a low risk-controlled environment, to reduce the chance of fear holding us back from trying and not getting it right the first time around. Once an idea has been tested and possibly enhanced through the testing process, applying this to a larger portion of the organisation will be easier as people will already know what potential results to expect from adopting this change.

5. Don’t leave anyone out

We already know that communication is key when implementing any form of change but so too are the people in an organisation. People want to know they have job security, and opportunities to upskill and train so they have the necessary capabilities to effectively implement and adopt the changes.

People in the organisation play a crucial role in the success of lasting changes so make sure you are communicating to all stakeholders, including employees, customers, and partners, who may either be affected by the change, or have influence over it. Clarity in the process creates certainty which aid in people embarking on the change.

6. Lead by example

Not doing so will severely impact the change becoming lasting or make it short-lived. Effective leadership can help to build buy-in, create a transparent and shared vision for the change, and drive successful implementation and adoption. To achieve lasting and impactful change, it is imperative to take people on the journey, connecting them with the why and involving them in the how.

Unlocking a world of content with streaming apps

0

Streaming apps have revolutionised the way we spend our leisure time, evolving from the days of video cassettes to a world of digital content. Gone are the days when we had to wait for our favourite TV shows to air or search for a particular movie at a video store. Today, all we need to access an endless library of entertainment options is a smartphone, tablet, smart TV or any other device with an internet connection.

Streaming apps such as Viu, StreamKAR and Showmax, offer a variety of content, including movies, TV shows, documentaries, original programming and even streamers showing off their talents. This variety of options means that there is something for everyone no matter what their interests are. Feeling frustrated by what’s available on traditional broadcast television? Look no further than the world of streaming apps.

The video cassette collections of the past were limited by the physical space available for storage, as well as the cost of buying or renting those good old-fashioned VHS cassettes. For their part, streaming apps have virtually unlimited storage capacity which means they can provide users with an immense library of content. Thanks to these digital platforms, we no longer have to pay for each video cassette individually, instead we are able to choose from an affordably monthly or yearly subscription plan that gives us access to an entire library of content.

The convenience of streaming apps cannot be overstated. With a quick download from the AppGallery, we can start watching our favourite shows or movies without any issues. We don’t have to worry about missing an episode because we can easily pick up where we left off. Because the apps can be downloaded to our mobile devices, we can watch at any time or place, whether a quick snippet during lunch, or at home relaxing on the couch. Plus, our mobile devices work even when load shedding hits, so no need to worry about the TV.

Another great aspect of these and other streaming apps is their ability to make suggestions based on our viewing history. This means that we can discover new shows and movies that we might not have otherwise known about. Many streaming apps also feature the option to download content for offline viewing. This is a perfect solution when we’re in an area where there is limited internet access.

It’s difficult to imagine a time without streaming apps. They’ve enhanced our leisure time by giving us virtually limitless content available at the tap of a finger. Whether we’re in the mood for a classic movie, a binge-worthy TV show or something completely new, streaming apps have changed the way we relax. Go on to AppGallery today and open the world of streaming content with your favourite apps.

Challenges and opportunities abound in the power utilities sector in 2023

0

Turbulent 2022 will live long in the memory for those of us who work in the power utilities sector. Loadshedding dominated local headlines, adding fresh impetus to the drive to bring more renewables into the system.

Energy transition has been high on the agenda for some time and momentum towards new patterns of energy generation will increase in 2023. Challenges and opportunities abound, and these are the trends that I believe will shape the year ahead:

Loadshedding continues

Eskom has already warned South Africans that 2023 is set to come with intensified loadshedding as more of the national network suffers breakdowns and new plants struggle to fully come online due to construction delays and design flaws.

Pressure will be on government to deregulate the industry and allow for more private producers, including consumers themselves. Those traditionally described as ‘behind the meter’ – the households, businesses and industries that consume energy – are increasingly stepping ‘in front of the meter’ to generate some of their own energy from assets such as solar panels, as well as manage their own supply and demand with energy storage systems.

Known as prosumers, because they produce and consume energy, their increasing involvement in energy markets is recognised as the likely way forward in an energy sector that must back away from heavy dependence on fossil fuels to mitigate climate change.

For national economies, domestically generated energy, even in small packets, reduces reliance on imports thus boosting energy security too.

The attractions are evident, but decentralisation presents challenges to the utilities sector that centre on how to balance the variable energy inflow from prosumers and commercial renewables while maintaining steady supply, particularly at times of peak demand on the grid. What is not in doubt is that decentralisation will be a growing trend in 2023 locally and abroad.

Digitalisation

A subsidiary of S&P Global Market Intelligence called 451 Research, concluded from international research that the utility sector is at a critical transition point. It is challenged with keeping existing grid and service levels in place, despite increasing demands and ageing legacy infrastructure, while facing the need to change service models and apply data insights to optimise operations.

Supporting the acceleration of new additions to South Africa’s energy mix will be achieved through the adoption of digital technologies that increase and optimise available energy. Energy storage opportunities will flourish and abound considering these developments.

Digitalisation can be seen by utilities either as a key to success, or as competitor to what they regard as more pressing challenges. The pressure to choose will be greater than ever in 2023 and beyond.

Green energy is still the key solution

The abundance of natural renewable energy in South Africa has massive untapped potential. For large South African companies in industries like mining and heavy industry, generating their own power from renewable sources such as solar and wind is more than just about protecting the environment. These new sources are critical in managing fast-rising electricity costs, as well as ensuring stability of supply while the state utility, Eskom, repairs its ageing and ailing infrastructure. Alternative power sources, like green hydrogen will also see greater emphasis as continued research unlocks the plentiful resource of water through electrolysis.

Ending the use of SF6 switchgear

It is important to note that while the intended move away from coal-fired power generation is very positive, the choice of materials used in electrical systems for new power stations, especially those containing harmful gasses, could also have a negative effect on the environment.

The EU, and other European countries including the UK, are set to ban the use of global warming SF6 gas in medium voltage switchgear from the mid-2020s. Utilities, together with the many other sectors that use this type of switchgear, will need to select alternatives for future projects.

In South Africa, large data centres, some utilities and several shopping centres have already implemented SF6-free switchgear. The country’s greenhouse gas emissions are among the highest in the world and SF6 gas in electrical switchgear is still widely use, as it provides high-voltage insulation, but is linked to a rise in Sulphur Hexafluoride emissions.

As a decentralised high renewable grid will require more frequent switching, the global switchgear market for new switchgear, as well as replacements, is growing. Fortunately, SF6-free medium voltage switchgear technology is mature, and widely available in South Africa in the range up to and including 24kV. This should make the decision to go SF6-free an easy one to make in 2023, and the years to follow. A more sustainable future will benefit us all.

Prince Kaybee and his Mac make sweet music together

0

Music moves the body, stirs the spirit, quickens the pulse and soothes the soul. It’s a universal language, transcending cultures and borders, transmitting its irresistible message in layers of rhythm and rhyme.

But for Kabelo Motsamai, better known as Prince Kaybee, music reaches out and connects with us on an even deeper level. It’s a way of making memories, taking us back, lifting us up, giving us space and time to relive emotions in motion. “Whatever you’re going through,” he says, “music is always there as a friend.”

As a multi award-winning musician, House music producer, and DJ, Prince Kaybee has created a tapestry of memory-makers that includes such hits as Charlotte, Club Controller, Fetch Your Life, and Uwrongo, a personal favourite of former US President Barack Obama.

Born in Senekal in the Free State, Prince Kaybee has come a long way since his days as an aspiring DJ in local clubs and shebeens. “I didn’t really have the dopest equipment,” he admits, recalling a temperamental Windows laptop that wouldn’t operate unless it was plugged in.

These days, he makes music with his trustiest collaborator —  the brand-new MacBook Pro M1 Pro. And it’s not just because of the all-day battery life that keeps the groove going on and on and on.

With its revolutionary System on a Chip (SoC) processor, which integrates multiple previously isolated components, the M1 offers more than enough speed, power, and performance to meet Prince Kaybee’s complex needs as a composer, arranger, mixer, producer, and performer.

His machine of choice is the MacBook Pro M1 Pro with 14-inch Retina screen, which he finds ideal for touring and for working on until late at night in any environment. That means a lot of fine-tuning, finessing, and testing songs, playing with sounds and frequencies on the high-end music and audio apps on his MacBook.

“When you get to your hotel,” he says, “you have your own HDMI cable, and you can just plug it into a TV.  You don’t need to convert. Everything sounds amazing, the look as well.”

Inspired by his growing international fan base, many of whom discovered his music on “Barack Obama’s Favourite Music of 2020” playlist, Prince Kaybee regards his MacBook Pro M1 as a crucial instrument on his quest to become a world class player.

“The sound needed to be of world class, so I needed to change my equipment,” he says. That meant making the big switch to Mac, a move that has opened his eyes, his ears, and his mind.

“It’s changed my life for the better,” he says. “I love Mac because of the simplicity… What’s on the iPhone is on the Mac, same thing. Airdrop, iMessage, everything’s just simple, man. It works for me, it’s beautiful.” …as beautiful as the music Prince Kaybee makes, to help people make memories that last.
