Rectron launches its first Technolab in the Eastern Cape

0

Rectron, a leading South African distributor of IT products, has opened a fully equipped Technolab at Ntabenkonyana SS School near Middledrift in the Eastern Cape. Over R500 000 in state-of-the-art computer equipment and infrastructure was donated and installed in the new facility by Rectron.

“Earlier this week, we were in the Eastern Cape province to continue our work under our Progressive Educational Upliftment (PEU) CSI programme to empower the youth with the right tech skills and knowledge for a digital career,” says Kutlwano Rawana, Chief of People at Rectron. “Our Technolabs initiative aims to level the playing field and ensure that all students, from different backgrounds have access to the technology they need.”

Rectron worked closely with the Ziphozihle Siwa Foundation to identify a school where a digital facility sponsorship such as a Technolab would not only benefit the learners, but that of the wider rural community. The foundation will continue to work closely with the school to ensure Rectron’s Technolab continues to have a sustainable impact long into the future.

“We are excited and welcome the initiative and sponsorship by Rectron. Access to opportunities by rural communities is most urgent at this time,” says Bishop Ziphozihle Siwa. “The sponsorship of the Technolab will go a long way in boosting the morale and add much value to what the school seeks to achieve.”

This is the sixth Technolab that Rectron has opened since the PEU initiative was first launched in 2022. After months of discussions with the teachers at Ntabenkonyana SS School and the Ziphozihle Siwa Foundation, Rectron was able to understand what the immediate needs of the learners were and deliver the right equipment that would help create a positive impact. Learners now have access to a classroom that is kitted out with state-of-the-art computers and screens as well as software. In addition to this, EcoFlow, a leading eco-friendly energy solution company, has also donated 24 DELTA series portable power stations.

“Knowing the impact load shedding is having around the country, we wanted to ensure that lessons remained uninterrupted for the learners and educators at Ntabenkonyana Secondary School,” says Joy Wu, Head of LAMEA & APAC at EcoFlow. “EcoFlow aims to empower people around the world to live, dream and explore without limits. We know that our energy solutions will further support Rectron’s PEU initiative.”

Rectron also partnered with Cricut, Scancode and AOC who sponsored various equipment and expertise to complete the Technolab, while Canon kindly donated food packs to the 488 learners at the launch of the Technolab on 16 May.

“While access to digital devices like computers is important, training and support are crucial to ensure that the Technolab lives up to its full potential,” says Rawana. “On top of the donation and installation, we will work with teachers at Ntabenkonyana SS School and the Eastern Cape Department of Basic Education to ensure that they are empowered to support the institution’s educational outcomes and promote digital literacy.”

“According to a 2020 Stats SA report on education, just under a third (32.2%) of South Africans between the ages of 5 and 24 had access to a laptop or desktop. This is a troubling statistic in today’s modern age where digital skills are no longer a nice-to-have in the workplace but an absolute necessity,” says Spencer Chen, Chief Executive Officer at Rectron. “Our PEU initiative is focused on changing this statistic in South Africa’s under resourced schools and ensuring that we can create more opportunities for our country’s youth.”

Earlier this year, Rectron received the news that one of its previous Technolab recipients Tshelenkosi Secondary School in Stanger achieved a 90.3% Matric pass rate for 2022. This is a huge increase from its 2021 pass rate of 65% and demonstrates the impact digital resources can have on a school.

“I think I speak for all the learners and teachers of Ntabenkonyana SS School when I say we could not be more excited to hold our first lesson in our new Technolab,” says Charmaine Nel, Principal of Ntabenkonyana SS School. “On the surface this might be a high-tech facility, but on a deeper level this is an important investment in our community’s future. Rectron’s Technolab will be a vital tool in providing the right digital education and skills development to our learners.”

As one of the leading television brands bringing Google TV technology to South African consumers, TCL understands the importance of keeping ahead of the curve. When it comes to innovation, the development team ensures that the brand remains keeping up with the times – and the incorporation of Google TV is a perfect example of this.

What is Google TV and why the hype?
Google TV is a television interaction platform users reach through Google Chrome. Google TV allows users to reach online video contents from various sources including YouTube and Netflix. With Google TV, browsing has just gotten better. It’s so easy. All you need for this simple navigation process is a remote, mouse, keyboard or Android-powered device.

With so many exciting features available on Google TV, TCL shares five incredible things users can do on a Google TV:

1) Find movies and series from all streaming apps in one place!
Users can find everything from games to apps on the Google Play Store. Google TV has access to your Google account though which contents can be downloaded when you don’t feel like surfing through Netflix or YouTube. Browse as much as you want on your devices with the Google Home app and make use of the voice command.

Your Google TV accesses a Google account where users can download content. Feel like browsing YouTube and Netflix? No Problem. Find all movies and shows on your streaming devices with the Google Home app in a flash. Just say ‘Hey Google, find me some good comedies’ or ‘Hey Google, what are the best dramas?’ Then scroll through the results for shows that may look like a good fit. And yes: this works across all your apps!

2) All the games you can imagine
Google TV offers so much more than just an elevated viewing experience. With apps like Google Play Games, users can turn their Google TV into a gaming console. Google Play Games gives players the chance to experience immersive and seamless cross-platform gameplay unlike ever before.

With a variety of gaming offerings, from action to puzzles, Google Play Games allows users to play a wide variety of games on their Google TV with the option of picking up where they left off on any other device running the app. Users can create their own unique profiles, easily record and share their best gameplay moments and automatically save their progress. Built-in Google games include Solitaire, Minesweeper, Snake, PAC-MAN, Cricket, and Whirlybird which are available for users to play even when they’re offline.

3) OK Google & Alexa make for the perfect personal assistants
A Google TV built-in voice search feature called “Ok Google” is available on the TCL P635 and other Google TVs. With this feature, it is so easy to use simple voice commands to switch your device on and off, change channels or adjust the volume. Google TV also has built-in Alexa support, so you can control your TV using only your voice with Alexa anywhere in your house.

4) Manage and monitor the content your kids are watching
When it comes to screen time, ensuring children are watching age-appropriate television has become a major concern for parents around the world. However, with Google TV’s new Kids profile function, parents are able to monitor what content your kids can consume and for how long.

By simply creating a kids profile on the existing Google account, parents can either lock or unlock certain apps, manage which apps are accessible to kids and share already purchased movies and TV shows through Google Play Family Library.

Additionally, with the addition of the Screen Time Management feature, parents can control the total time kids spend watching TV and set a bedtime to ensure children make it to bed on time.

Vodacom nourishing young South African lives through sustainable food gardens

0

In South Africa, 10% of children under the age of 17 are food insecure. For young children in their first three years of life, a lack of nutrition can affect their physical and mental health development. This is where Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres can play an important role in ensuring young children are given a nutritious meal, with food gardens at these centres providing an opportunity to supplement feeding schemes and improve the lives of learners and their families.

It has been just over a year since Vodacom South Africa launched the Green ECD programme, and now more than 250 children are benefiting from sustainable food gardens at ECD centres across the country.

“Vodacom’s Green ECD journey began in October 2021, as part of our commitment to improving the quality of lives of the community members we serve. Through the planting of sustainable food gardens, implementation of energy-efficient and water-saving infrastructure, and education on sustainability practices, we are creating a life-long culture of caring for the planet from a young age. Simultaneously, the food gardens are supporting local feeding schemes, thereby helping address food insecurity in South Africa while providing socio-economic opportunities for community upliftment,” says Takalani Netshitenzhe, External Affairs Director for Vodacom South Africa.

Learners at Grasar Day Care Centre in Olievenhoutbosch, Gauteng, have benefited tremendously from the initiative. “We’ve noticed that our children are not getting ill as often as before now that they have access to and are eating fresh fruit and vegetables more regularly. We’ve also seen a boost in their learning development and general wellbeing,” says Grace Maluleke, owner of Grasar Day Care Centre.

The programme, developed in partnership with local NPOs and other private businesses, includes educational workshops to promote sustainable practices for teachers, parents and community members, which not only ensures the longevity of the gardens but also provides skills development. At Grasar Day Care Centre, for example, many community members have volunteered to be part of the project to learn new skills.

At Hulisani Day Care Centre in Limpopo, teachers observed that many community members have also taken to working in the garden as a form of stress relief – which, of course, has positive implications for their general health, as it is a form of exercise. The centre is also pleased to see children developing gardening skills at a young age, which is certain to benefit them later in life.

In addition, the centres have been able to cut down on costs by growing their own produce, and providing food to staff as well as community members who volunteer in the gardens. In some cases, the centres have also been able to increase their income by selling the produce, or using the gardens as a marketing tool to increase learner registrations.

Having access to fresh water for the garden has made a significant impact on Lady Frere Day Care Centre in the Eastern Cape, too. This is especially important, as the area usually experiences periods of water shortages and drought.

To date, the programme has benefitted 252 children, with other participating ECDs including Divhani Community Creche and Mvelaphanda Day Care Centre, both in Limpopo, RANS Future Kids in Mpumalanga, and Sthandokuhle ECD Centre in KwaZulu-Natal.

Access to digital technology can help improve educational outcomes and provide opportunities for digital literacy training and skills development for both teachers and learners alike. To this end,
Vodacom South Africa also donated ICT equipment and learning materials to the centres in an effort to address the digital divide in under-resourced areas of the country.

“We are extremely proud of what Vodacom’s Green ECD programme has achieved in just over a year. Through our ongoing partnerships with NPOs, the private sector and local communities, we are developing a sustainable ecosystem, which is helping to transform lives while ensuring that we take care of the planet for future generations,” concludes Netshitenzhe.

Responsible hospitality in SA: How hotels can incorporate sustainability

Sustainability is a growing priority for almost every industry on the planet right now and hospitality is no exception. That’s hardly surprising. Apart from a desire to act as good corporate citizens, it’s also something that the industry’s customers increasingly demand. In fact, a 2021 study found that 81% of travellers planned on choosing sustainable accommodation in the next year.

It’s not just travellers either. Investors in the hospitality sector also increasingly demand sustainability. That much should be obvious from the uptake of green bonds issued by some of the world’s biggest hotel companies. It’s a phenomenon which fits in with a broader investor focus on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues. A Bloomberg study found that there are currently US$37.8 trillion in assets under management by funds with a focus on sustainability.

Perhaps most importantly, however, the industry needs to play whatever role it can in operating more sustainably. The sector is, after all, responsible for around one percent of global emissions and must cut its emissions by 66% by 2030 and 90% by 2050 to stay within the goals set out in the Paris Climate Agreement.

Knowing all that, how can hotels incorporate sustainability into their day-to-day operations and beyond?

Small changes make a big impact

When it comes to making sustainability-driven changes from an operational perspective, small changes can make a big difference.

For instance, simply measuring energy and water usage as well as waste can give hotel managers and operators a baseline from which they can start making improvements. Those improvements frequently don’t require major retrofits either.

A good example of this is water usage. The Radisson Hotel Group has, for a number of years now, asked hotel guests to reuse their towels. For each set of towels that’s reused, 15 litres of water are saved. That might not seem like much, but for a hotel like the Radisson Blu Hotel Waterfront with 177 rooms operating throughout the year, it can quickly add up. Similar gains can be made by improving energy efficiency and reducing waste and single-use plastics wherever possible.

Taken together, such changes can result in hotels operating in a much more sustainable manner without compromising (and in some cases even improving) the overall guest experience.

Building out sustainability beyond the hotel grounds

Of course, sustainability doesn’t start and end at the entrance to the hotel grounds. It also has to extend to the broader world outside the hotel. It’s therefore important that hotels work with organisations that are making a difference on the ground in the towns and cities in which they operate.

This could also involve partnering with local city and governmental institutions that are working to alleviate the effects of poverty, for example. Hotel teams should reach out to City Managers to seek out the initiatives that are in need of support.

It’s also important to remember that sustainability is about more than just the environment. People play an important role too. “That’s why we’ve partnered with the Cape Town City Improvement District (CCID) and Hope for the Homeless organisation to provide warm blankets to Cape Town’s unhoused community, ahead of the cold winter season,” says Radisson Blu Hotel Waterfront Training Manager, Porche Benjamin. Radisson Group hotels in the city including Radisson Blu Hotel Waterfront, Radisson Blu Hotel & Residence, Park Inn Foreshore and Radisson RED V&A Cape Town will each have a box on display in their lobby area in order to get as many blanket donations from guests and staff as possible.

This shows that hotels aren’t just able to drive sustainability through their own actions but can also help their guests participate in sustainability initiatives in the destinations they visit.

Focusing on our collective future

Ultimately, while there are numerous incentives for hotels to focus on sustainability, the most important thing to remember is that such a focus may be critical to a future where hotels, the people in the surrounding communities, and the surrounding environment can all thrive.

Department of Tourism – Tackling Inclusivity

0

Operating in a country with a history of segregation, the Department of Tourism is tackling the complexity of inclusion head on, its depth and width.

The National Inclusivity Pledge.

On the weekend leading to the start of Africa’s Travel Indaba 2023, the Department of Tourism committed itself by declaring a pledge of inclusivity for the sector, setting the industry on a path to commit to a code of conduct.  Engagement has started with panel discussions sessions during the event and the question of how exactly we can be inclusive as a sector was unpacked extensively, amongst other critical points, with an example from Thami Dish of Thami Dish Foundation representing the LGBTQ+ community, correcting the moderator that addressing audiences with ‘ladies and gentlemen’ is not inclusive.   Siting ‘Thank you everyone’ as what is more appropriate.  The panel included representatives from Universal Accessibility, the Human Rights Commission and the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation – leading the conversation on how the sector can be conscious of inclusivity beyond policies and pledges.

“We need to reflect on our own biases and call ourselves out when we overlook things like not having sign language interpreters available on the floor of business exhibitions such as this one [referring to Travel Indaba] and learn basics such as greeting in sign language.” Bronwen Auret of Tourism Grading Council of SA commented in an interview with Lifestyle and Tech.

Browen concurs with the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation representative who recommended that we need to be explicit about inclusivity and label spaces such as park benches with “For Everyone” [as opposed to a time when in SA there was designated spaces for whites only] so that people can transition to being actively inclusive.

Skills Development for Small Establishments

For the Department, inclusivity includes the marginalised and/or previously disadvantaged individuals trying to access the sector but are limited by shortage of skills and capacity.

As the only quality assurance body in the country for the sector, Tourism Grading Council has taken an organic yet focussed approach through its Assessor Program.  The Program has been playing the role of handholding for establishments that need support to shift from current to desired status by meeting the requirements of the council.  “The role of the program is more like a consulting service,” Bronwen added.  “Through this pre-grading process establishments are guided on exactly how to progress their establishments to a point where they meet standards required by the grading star they are aspiring for.”

This week, the Department announced that its Basic Quality Verification Program is being launched in KZN as an expansion from its pilot in the Eastern-Cape which saw 120 establishments being successfully graded. The programme helps small tourism establishments in under-resourced villages, towns, and small dorpies (VTSDs) reach their full potential by giving them access to training, expertise, and resources, as well as The Grading Council of South Africa’s valuable stamp of approval.

On restoring quality of customer service, Auret acknowledges that the situation needs multiple interventions and that the sector lost its much-needed institutional knowledge and skills to COVID-19.  The Welcome Program is hard at work – training incumbents at all ports of entry.   In October 2022 the program trained an entire staff compliment for a cruise liner and port of entry in the Western Cape – to train the first cruise liner to go live post covid.

Being part of rebuilding quality and capacity for the tourism sector is a responsibility and honour not taken lightly by Grading Council.  Whilst there’s much progress to be made around inclusivity within the sector, the good news its stakeholders are open to learning and are taking action.
