SOLA and African Rainbow Energy reached financial close on 200MW solar PV projects for Tronox Mineral Sands.

0

The first two registered 100MW energy projects have reached financial close to fulfill the obligations of a bilateral electricity sales agreement between SOLA Group and Tronox Mineral Sands, which was made possible by the historic legislation that raised the licensing limit from 1 to 100MW in August 2021.

These renewable energy facilities will supply electricity, through wheeling arrangements with Eskom, to five Tronox facilities in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal for their own use. Tronox Mineral Sands operations are highly energy intensive, and will ensure Tronox’s economic viability and long-term electricity supply affordability.

“Tronox’s renewable energy project with SOLA Group will reduce our global carbon emissions by approximately 13% compared to our 2019 baseline,” commented Melissa Zona, Tronox Holdings plc’s Senior Vice President, Chief Human Resources and Sustainability Officer.  “This is yet another example of how Tronox is committed to being a leader when it comes to corporate sustainability and protection of the environment. Switching from coal-based to renewable power in South Africa is one of the many ways Tronox is implementing technology and best practices  at our sites to protect our land, water, air and ecosystems and operate more sustainably ,” concluded Ms. Zona.

Tronox Mineral Sands and SOLA signed a Power Purchase Agreement in March 2022. SOLA’s in-house engineering, finance and project development capabilities have helped to accelerate the conclusion of the deal.

“There are significant firsts here for the renewable energy industry”  says Dom Wills, CEO, SOLA Group, “These are the first projects of this scale in SA that are based on pure private bilateral trade.  It’s also a great plus for the country that these projects are 100% South African owned, financed, constructed, operated and managed.”

Renewable projects are capital intensive and long term.  The projects needed to raise a total of R4 billion of funding for construction and development.  In order for this to happen, SOLA reached agreement with funding partner and shareholder African Rainbow Energy.

“African Rainbow Energy is a Leading Renewable Energy platform, the largest shareholder in the SOLA Group and the funder of the two projects” says Brian Dames CEO, African Rainbow Energy, “This is a clear demonstration of African Rainbow Energy’s  and partners, Absa, DBSA, Nedbank and Standard Bank’s commitment to our Country, the economy, and our customers. This investment brings hope”.

The debt arrangement was led by PepperTree Capital, and senior lenders included three of the big banks in South Africa and the DBSA who provided a total of R3.1Bn of debt into the project.  The legal advisors into the transaction were Pinsent Masons, Hogan Lovells, Faskens, Allen & Overy and ENS.

SOLA also entered into a Joint Venture Agreement with WBHO, for the design and construction of the project, where SOLA performs the engineering services and WBHO will perform the construction. The project comprises of 387,000 solar panels mounted on single axis trackers that track the sun’s position as it moves across the sky.  The project will also be one of the first projects to directly feed into Eskom’s high voltage transmission network.

“We’re very pleased to be part of the first major utility energy project in SA for a private offtaker”  says Derek Wallace, Managing Director, Projects, WBHO. “We are looking forward to delivering a world class project.”

This project is seen as a potential breakthrough for the private energy market and has paved the way for more projects like it.  The options for developing projects for private buyers will only increase as the government finalises its plans to establish a trading market on the national grid.

“Looking ahead, we hope the model of private power through bilateral agreements continues to become more widely adopted,” says Wills, “the benefits to the end user are competition, choice and ultimately a more diverse contribution to the power system.”

The SOLA Group is a vertically integrated Independent Power Producer and a leader in the supply of clean energy solutions to private companies in Africa. SOLA’s mission is to transform Africa through clean energy.

Trevor Noah to leave The Daily Show.

0

Trevor Noah, the host of The Daily Show, announced on Thursday that he will be leaving the satirical news program after seven years. He did not provide a date for his departure.

The 38-year-old remarked in a video posted to the show’s Twitter account, “My time is up.

After being prevented from traveling due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the South African comic claimed he missed it.

I didn’t travel for two years; I stayed in my apartment, he claimed. “I came to the realization that there is another area of my life I want to continue exploring.”

The show rose to prominence under former host Jon Stewart, who hosted the show for 16 years before leaving in 2015.

It came as a surprise to many when relatively unknown Noah was announced as Stewart’s replacement.

No hints have been given as to who will succeed Noah.

In a statement to US media, Paramount Global cable network, which owns the Comedy Central show, said, “Without a date for his departure, we’re working together on next steps.”

In his 2016 best-selling memoir, “Born a Crime,” Noah described his life in apartheid-era South Africa as the son of a black South African mother and a white Swiss-German father.

I’ve enjoyed hosting this show, Noah remarked; it’s been both one of my biggest difficulties and my greatest delights.

City of Cape Town to build its very own new solar plant in 2023

0

The City of Cape Town is set to make plans to build its very first grid-connected solar plant next year as one of its ways to end load-shedding over time.

The City’s electricity network will be directly connected to the 7MW Atlantis solar photovoltaic (PV) system. The power station would begin producing electricity in 2024 and last for 20 years, producing 14.7GWh of energy annually.

According to the statement, the Atlantis solar project will improve the city’s ability to sustain its finances because producing the electricity would be less expensive than buying it in bulk from Eskom.

By lessening its reliance on Eskom, the City is also free to research and develop more environmentally friendly energy sources than Eskom’s coal-fired power plants.

Geordin Hill-Lewis, the mayor of Cape Town, claims that the city has also put aside R15 million to pay small, independent energy producers who have been supplying the system with electricity. In addition to making progress toward enabling independent power generation and small-scale embedded generation, that City has built its own generation.

Additionally, the solar plant could strengthen Atlantis’ status as a financial center and boost the local economy overall.

According to Councillor Beverley van Reenen, who serves on the Mayoral Committee for Energy for the City, the Atlantis plant’s development will improve the country’s gross domestic product by R47,2 million.

The project is anticipated to boost the neighborhood real estate market as well as increase community safety.

FlySafair adds Best Low-Cost Airline in Africa to its awards cabinet.

Skytrax has named FlySafair the Best Low-Cost Airline in Africa at this year’s World Airline Awards for the second year running. Launched in 1999, Skytrax has grown to become the foremost annual customer satisfaction award in global aviation. FlySafair accepted the award at the event in London earlier today.

“The FlySafair team is a group of amazing people, and we are extremely proud of the hard work they put into making sure our passengers enjoy a seamless, on-time travel experience,” says Kirby Gordon, Chief Marketing Officer at FlySafair. “To have this dedication to our customers recognised at this level is a testament to the care and commitment our staff bring to work each day.”

Kirby Gordon

The winners of the World Airline Awards are selected based on an annual customer satisfaction survey run by Skytrax. This year’s event saw over 80 major awards handed out across various categories.

“We’re always a little prouder of awards that we know are based on customer feedback,” says Gordon. “It’s great to be recognised by the industry but we’re always at pains to keep our focus on customer service regardless of whether the business is doing well, or poorly.”

AirAsia was named the Best Low-Cost Airline in the world followed by Scoot and Southwest Airlines.

FlySafair has secured strong gains in the domestic market this year and has managed significant growth in market share and capacity. The airline launched a new connection between Johannesburg and Bloemfontein this month bringing the total number of seats operated in September 2022 to 152% of what was operated in 2021. Key to the airline’s success is it’s On-Time Performance rating which was 95.6% in August and hasn’t dipped below 95% for the last six months.

“Our focus always has been and will remain on the basics. We want to keep customers satisfied with flights that are affordable, on time and hassle free,” says Gordon.

Burna Boy Saved The Day

0

JOHANNESBURG – For some participants, Day 1 of the much anticipated DStv Delicious Festival began on a negative note due to  long queues into the event premises.

The Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in Midrand hosted the international culinary and music event on Saturday.Festival guests had a wide selection of food and drinks to choose from.

For some festival goers, the event’s opening was marred by unexpectedly long lines to enter the venue.

Many festival goers aired their dissatisfaction on social media, which helped the event rise to the top of the Twitter trends list.

Many people voiced their displeasure, but others made suggestions on how to enjoy it the next time: like be there as early as 10am.

The event would not have received good marks from festival goers if Burna Boy had not been the headlining act.The artist lit the stage on fire while performing his hit songs Last LastYe, and Soke.

His performance single-handedly saved the event and helped others to feel less guilty about going to the festival .

DStv Delicious apologised on Saturday night, citing a delay at their doors caused by the need to verify tickets due to fake ones.

On Sunday, a number of local acts as well as the Grammy-winning Babyface will perform to conclude the event.

Attendees hope a better Day 2 that won’t let them down and, ideally, will make up for the logistical problems of Day 1.

Technology Education Day: Teaching the Younger Generations about Cybersecurity

0

Cybersecurity experts at Check Point Software explain that in an increasingly digitalised world, educating all users on cyber threats, no matter their age, is critical

On Technology Education Day, Check Point® Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ: CHKP), a leading provider of cybersecurity solutions globally, shares its top advice on cybersecurity skills for young people. Technology Education Day assumes more significance than ever as so much course work and classroom teaching relies on digital platforms. No matter what field of study they choose, be it engineering or business, there is no way students can progress without embracing technology. However, with this increase in tech across all sectors also comes increased risk of cyberattack. In Africa, organisations experienced an average of 1,896 cyberattacks per week over the last six months.

So, Check Point Software explains the cybersecurity skills that each student should have, depending on their age group:

  • Cybersecurity in primary schools: Experts recommend 10 years of age as the ideal time to begin addressing cybersecurity in the classroom – as long as the different devices have security software and parental controls, and they are used under adult supervision. At this stage, the most useful knowledge that can be taught to pupils is about privacy, responsible use of the internet, basic security settings for devices and advice on cyberbullying.
  • Secondary school knowledge: This age group needs to learn the most common cybersecurity threats and dangers on the internet, such as phishing and how to identify a suspicious email or text, account theft, malware, ransomware and their signs. Following this, it is also possible to introduce and deepen knowledge of basic concepts such as bugs, vulnerabilities, exploits, or human failure as well as sophisticated social engineering – what it is, how it works and how cybercriminals use it.
  • Higher Education: Whether pursuing a university degree or a vocational training cycle, it is at this stage that a student focuses on the subject in which they want to specialise and develop for their professional life. Subjects such as computer engineering, telecommunications, a degree specialising in cybersecurity or computer science are the ones that will expand the cybersecurity knowledge beyond what was learned at school. It should not be forgotten that the digital world, and likewise the threat landscape, is constantly evolving, and at a much faster rate than other disciplines, so training does not stop. After completing higher education, students can always continue to expand knowledge and skills with courses or master’s degrees.

“Cybersecurity education is becoming more and more important, as it will not only be useful for people working in the sector, but it will be crucial for everyone’s day-to-day life. Everything is becoming more digitalised and any action we take will carry dangers both in our work and in our private lives”, explains Pankaj Bhula, Regional Director for Africa at Check Point Software. “Today’s children are technology natives, so let’s give them the tools to feel safe in a fast-changing environment where they spend most of their day”.
