Bad habits are costing you energy

Saving energy

Ever stood in front of the fridge browsing through the contents deciding what to cook or looking for a snack? Those seconds may seem ridiculously small but if you add them up, on average people accumulate 10 hours worth of those seconds every year. 10 hours equals roughly seven percent of your power bill. If you don’t relate to that, what about falling asleep in front of the TV …add another 8% to your bill if you do this regularly. Obviously neither percentage is specific, but does give you some idea of how bad habits add to your energy bill.

There are a large number of energy-wasting ‘sins’ that we engage in around our homes, which the Alliance to Save Energy says accounts for 25% of our power bills. By far the worst, according to many global experts, is leaving appliances switched on when not in use, be that kettles, computers, toasters, even televisions in standby mode. Apparently some modern devices also use energy if not switched off at the wall socket, for example, a phone charger consumes 0.26 watts of energy even if a phone isn’t connected. And if it is connected and fully charged that wattage spikes to 2.24.

Switch off or unplug?

Regardless of switching off items at the wall socket, there are strong recommendations that where possible, it is better to completely unplug. Whilst unplugging doesn’t necessarily save power it does prevent any fire threats, and secondly reduces wear and tear on, particularly, electronics by eliminating the need for them to cool down when not in use. A third reason is South Africa’s load-shedding regime, for if something isn’t plugged in, it won’t be vulnerable to electricity spikes, or lightning hits. Simple logic says that if something isn’t plugged in, it can’t consume power.

The items that should be switched off when not in use include laptops and computers, TVs and gaming systems, phone chargers, lamps and lighting fixtures, and small kitchen appliances, regardless of whether they are energy-efficient or not.

Light issues

And while on the subject of switching off, and if your mother didn’t drill this into you, its time to start turning off the lights, or at least replacing light bulbs with the energy-efficient alternatives. Incandescent light bulbs, which are being phased out, have power ratings of between 40-100 watts. The newer CFL energy efficient bulbs in comparison are rated 10-30 watts without impacting on brightness. Even better are LED bulbs because while they have the same brightness as CFLs they only draw between 3-15 watts, but LEDs are more expensive. However, cost savings can be offset against the lifespan of an LED, which provides up to 25 000 hours when compared to the 10 000 hours for CFL’s and the meagre 1 000 hours for incandescent bulbs.

It is difficult to work out exactly what you’ll save by switching off lights because it depends on the wattage of the bulbs in use, but currently South Africa’s tariff is around R146 per kWh but that is also dependent on different municipalities.

Working out wattages

Simply, every appliance or device that can be plugged into an electrical socket draws power in the form of wattage, which should be clearly indicated on the device. Working out whether such a device is affordable in the long term is, perhaps, something we should all be in the habit of determining prior to buying new products. The formula is simple math:

Multiply the kWh figure provided on a device label by the cost of electricity in the municipality.

A example, given by Defy, is a fridge that uses 254 kWh per year, at a rate of (assumed) R2 per kWh, will cost R508 a year. In comparison, by using an energy-saving model that has a lower wattage could save thousands over five years.

Ignorance sins

There are a number of ‘sins’ that we practice in our homes without even realising how much unnecessary load we put on the national grid, and our electricity bills. The most common bad habits that waste power include: leaving a TV or laptop in standby mode overnight; leaving a laptop or phone plugged in when fully charged; not switching off a light or radio in an unoccupied room; falling asleep with the TV still running; boiling a full kettle for a single cup of coffee or tea; use of a tumble dryer on a sunny day; not using a washing machine to its full load capacity and using hot water cycles; and by far the greatest sin, not doing maintenance checks on appliances that may be draining power unnecessarily.

Conclusion

Electricity isn’t going to get cheaper. Going fully solar, or even partly, may solve the problem but it is not currently an affordable option for most households. While it may seem that switching off a TV at the wall rather than putting it into standby mode is a matter of merely a few cent-savings, add those up over a year, remember the adage that if you take care of the cents, the Rands will look after themselves.

Trevor Noah is leaving The Daily Show – how did he fare?

South African stand-up comedian and author Trevor Noah

Africa’s most famous funnyman and TV star, the South African stand-up comedian and author Trevor Noah, is leaving his job as the host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show in the US. Noah, who hosted the high profile show for seven years, says he wants to devote more time to his stand-up career. We asked Allaina Kilby, a journalism, political communication and satire lecturer, how he will be remembered in the political satire landscape on TV in the US.

What’s your view of Trevor Noah’s tenure at the show?

Taking over from Jon Stewart was never going to be easy. Stewart was widely respected for his passionate satirical take downs of US political transgressions and cable news channels. The appeal of successful satirists like him is that they are on the audiences’ side, they articulate citizen concerns and anger on a public stage but in a funny and compelling way. This creates a bond between the satirist and audience and this is why Stewart leaving The Daily Show was such a big deal to his loyal followers.

Noah, a little known comedian back in 2015, had to build that trust back up with an audience who had no idea who he was. This took some time and viewing figures for the programme took a dip in the first two years. But eventually the audience came to realise that Noah was equally as capable as Stewart if not more so because he was able to offer something different to his predecessor: an outsider’s perspective to America’s political and social problems.

What did he bring to the landscape?

The American late-night comedy scene is very male, white, and American. As a native South African, Noah has brought clarity and fresh perspectives to emotionally charged political issues that are often missing from late-night comedy and American cable news.

But growing up as mixed-race during apartheid also enabled Noah to handle crucial moments like the Black Lives Matter movement with a level of awareness and sensitivity that could never be matched by his white, male counterparts. These unique perspectives caught the attention of a younger and more diverse global audience that have been introduced to The Daily Show via Noah.

Is the power of TV satire as a critical tool increasing or decreasing?

The genre has become a highly saturated space with lots of different programmes vying for the attention of audiences who are leaving TV in favour of digital platforms. This makes it increasingly difficult for the more progressive and politically charged satire programmes to have the same impact they once had, particularly when the highest rating shows in the genre tend to be more entertainment focused like Jimmy Kimmel Live and The Late Late Show With James Corden.

It is vital that TV satire shows continue to highlight and critique political and social issues. However, it is equally important that they explore them through the lenses of gender, race and class and via a wider variety of digital platforms.

What has it meant for a black African to take on this role?

Trevor Noah’s tenure on The Daily Show has highlighted the importance of challenging the white, male centric nature of the American late-night scene. I hope that the show continues to recognise the importance of diversity. Maybe this time they can bring American actresses and comedians Jessica Williams and Samantha Bee back into the fold as chief anchors.

What’s Manufacturing Facility Acceptance Testing Fat & How Does It Work?

This is the only method to determine whether a bit https://www.globalcloudteam.com/ of recent tools will function as wanted. The FAT relies upon written procedures, normally written by either the consultant or the system programmer; the latter has a more detailed understanding of all the logic involved, so it is not unusual for him/her to organize this doc. The doc itself doesn’t essentially should be lengthy or too detailed; normally the key operating traits have to be listed with some particulars of their respective operations. Normally the FAT and EFAT cost are included within the procurement of the individual equipment. The SIT value estimation model for subsea production system is listed in Table 6-2.

Step 2 Engineering And Supplies Documentation

The test protocol is developed through the planning and furthermore who is responsible to attest the check protocol. The procedures to carry out the FAT shall be well outlined and documented in a correct way. The needed competence for concerned test personnel is described through the planning. It is beneficial that personnel with expertise appropriate for the meant process application and security instrumented system offers with the FAT planning. The FAT is the time to find factory acceptance test definition failures or points, determine reliability, confirm efficiencies, and explore how the machine should handle failures. The check plan should be ready up front and submitted to the supplier as a part of the Request for Quote (RFQ).

Bringing Imaginative And Prescient And Performance Collectively

definition of factory acceptance testing

With a Factory Acceptance Test, you be sure that everything works properly before you deliver a management cupboard to a customer. The first stage of a Factory Acceptance Test protocol is planning by establishing what needs to be examined and the way it is going to be examined. The producer, particularly the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), outlines the initial scope of the FAT in the course of the customer’s bidding phase.

Create Your Individual Manufacturing Facility Acceptance Check (fat) Guidelines

Documentation similar to drawings, ASME certificates, and check procedures have to be gathered. And finally, testing should be performed in the factory that follows particular check procedures. Before the FAT begins, the manufacturer ought to current the FAT procedure to the shopper for evaluate and approval. The procedure should embrace testing of as a lot performance as is sensible within the manufacturing unit and, where potential, should present pass/fail criteria or desired results for each item tested. Once the procedure is approved, the manufacturer ought to take a look at the gear before the FAT begins. Keep in mind that some clients like to go to the manufacturing unit throughout FAT, so this “pre-test” will confirm that the sterilizer is set up with the proper choices, ensure a smoother FAT process and minimize down-time through the FAT. Services for proof of functionalityWe use conventional function checks or simulation as a part of a manufacturing facility acceptance take a look at to prove that your plant, its methods and its components meet contractual requirements.

Why Is It Necessary To Have An Fat?

  • SafetyCulture helps you handle and automate your Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) process.
  • The purpose is to ensure that the machine or system meets the requirements that were ordered by the customer.
  • Machines have a pure backup curve that’s all about early failures.
  • The Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) is a process that evaluates the gear during and after the meeting course of by verifying that it is constructed and operating in accordance with design specs.

FATs are usually conducted on the manufacturer’s website but can be performed at the customer’s website if necessary. It aims to establish any potential issues with the equipment or system before it is installed so that these problems can be addressed earlier than the equipment is put into service. Typically each the advisor and the customer are present for the testing, so that both parties are glad that the system has been carried out accurately. Problems may still present up on web site in the course of the commissioning, but at this FAT stage, much of the logic can be checked out and demonstrated.

Steps For Manufacturing Facility Acceptance Check

All digital inputs and outputs might be tested with short-term switches or jumpers for their operation. If human-machine interfaces (HMIs) are configured into the system, enter and outputs might be checked from the HMI touchscreen. Analog inputs shall be confirmed using a present simulator signaling four mA, 12 mA, and 20 mA whereas witnessing the corresponding worth in the code consultant of 0, 50, and 100% of the management value. Analog outputs would be learn with a present meter whereas manipulating a zero, 50, and 100 percent course of signal within the code. FATs nearly always save money and time over fixing points in the field. To put together for the manufacturing facility acceptance check, you will need to gather your documentation and have it able to present to the testing staff.

If you’ve been questioning what precisely an FAT entails and why ought to get one, we’ve got some answers for you in this publish. The acceptance check suite is run utilizing predefined acceptance test procedures to direct the testers on which information to make use of, the step-by-step processes to follow, and the expected end result following execution. The actual outcomes are retained for comparability with the expected outcomes.[9] If the actual outcomes match the expected results for every test case, the check case is alleged to pass. If the quantity of non-passing take a look at circumstances doesn’t breach the project’s predetermined threshold, the take a look at suite is alleged to move. If it does, the system might both be rejected or accepted on situations beforehand agreed between the sponsor and the producer.

Because the safety of your workers is always a high precedence, high quality assurance supplies you with the peace of mind that all components of your system are functioning properly and within the full vary of operating specs. These qualification steps are important to demonstrate equipment quality, efficiency, compliance and efficiency. They assure that every one earlier stipulations for the following qualification steps are accomplished. To conclude, it is recommended to have dependable personnel on both sides (supplier and client), clear testing strategies, professional URS and trustful collaboration.

It ensures the model new tools meets all agreed-upon specs, stopping points at the client’s web site. Fixing manufacturing points earlier than the tools leaves the producer helps management the project’s timeline and budget. The FAT is a cost-effective solution, most well-liked over addressing issues after deployment. By testing the equipment or components earlier than the shopper receives them, DXP can enhance the odds that new installations will perform as expected. Planning, documenting, and testing the equipment before delivery ensures the product constantly meets the customer’s expectations. Some contracts require a Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) carried out on the contractor’s facility; such a take a look at consists of the contractor, or the system programmer in particular, demonstrating that this system logic works appropriately.

This consists of your requirements specification, design documents, check plans, and different related info. You should also be ready to answer any questions that the testing staff could have. In the latter case, the customer have to be ready to make product out there to the seller both to develop and take a look at the system, as properly as the FAT. The buyer should also specify who will operate the system for the tests and the interval, or variety of components to be produced, to define the length of the exams.

Project managers ought to identify and eliminate hazards in the test area before commencing the acceptance testing. Complete the security inspection with a cell device and make certain that equipment nameplates are seen, emergency cease buttons are accessible, and safety switches are put in. Use a mobile-ready factory acceptance check checklist to confirm if pre-tests were conducted, corrective actions have been implemented, and all FAT personnel are outfitted with the suitable PPE. By utilizing a linked worker platform in manufacturing unit acceptance testing, companies can optimize the process, improve communication, increase efficiency, and guarantee comprehensive documentation. This contributes to building belief between manufacturers and clients and supports quality assurance in the supply of machines. The product should be assembled, prepared, and linked to utilities for testing.

SOLA and African Rainbow Energy reached financial close on 200MW solar PV projects for Tronox Mineral Sands.

Tronox Mineral Sands
Sola Group

The first two registered 100MW energy projects have reached financial close to fulfill the obligations of a bilateral electricity sales agreement between SOLA Group and Tronox Mineral Sands, which was made possible by the historic legislation that raised the licensing limit from 1 to 100MW in August 2021.

These renewable energy facilities will supply electricity, through wheeling arrangements with Eskom, to five Tronox facilities in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal for their own use. Tronox Mineral Sands operations are highly energy intensive, and will ensure Tronox’s economic viability and long-term electricity supply affordability.

“Tronox’s renewable energy project with SOLA Group will reduce our global carbon emissions by approximately 13% compared to our 2019 baseline,” commented Melissa Zona, Tronox Holdings plc’s Senior Vice President, Chief Human Resources and Sustainability Officer.  “This is yet another example of how Tronox is committed to being a leader when it comes to corporate sustainability and protection of the environment. Switching from coal-based to renewable power in South Africa is one of the many ways Tronox is implementing technology and best practices  at our sites to protect our land, water, air and ecosystems and operate more sustainably ,” concluded Ms. Zona.

Tronox Mineral Sands and SOLA signed a Power Purchase Agreement in March 2022. SOLA’s in-house engineering, finance and project development capabilities have helped to accelerate the conclusion of the deal.

“There are significant firsts here for the renewable energy industry”  says Dom Wills, CEO, SOLA Group, “These are the first projects of this scale in SA that are based on pure private bilateral trade.  It’s also a great plus for the country that these projects are 100% South African owned, financed, constructed, operated and managed.”

Renewable projects are capital intensive and long term.  The projects needed to raise a total of R4 billion of funding for construction and development.  In order for this to happen, SOLA reached agreement with funding partner and shareholder African Rainbow Energy.

“African Rainbow Energy is a Leading Renewable Energy platform, the largest shareholder in the SOLA Group and the funder of the two projects” says Brian Dames CEO, African Rainbow Energy, “This is a clear demonstration of African Rainbow Energy’s  and partners, Absa, DBSA, Nedbank and Standard Bank’s commitment to our Country, the economy, and our customers. This investment brings hope”.

The debt arrangement was led by PepperTree Capital, and senior lenders included three of the big banks in South Africa and the DBSA who provided a total of R3.1Bn of debt into the project.  The legal advisors into the transaction were Pinsent Masons, Hogan Lovells, Faskens, Allen & Overy and ENS.

SOLA also entered into a Joint Venture Agreement with WBHO, for the design and construction of the project, where SOLA performs the engineering services and WBHO will perform the construction. The project comprises of 387,000 solar panels mounted on single axis trackers that track the sun’s position as it moves across the sky.  The project will also be one of the first projects to directly feed into Eskom’s high voltage transmission network.

“We’re very pleased to be part of the first major utility energy project in SA for a private offtaker”  says Derek Wallace, Managing Director, Projects, WBHO. “We are looking forward to delivering a world class project.”

This project is seen as a potential breakthrough for the private energy market and has paved the way for more projects like it.  The options for developing projects for private buyers will only increase as the government finalises its plans to establish a trading market on the national grid.

“Looking ahead, we hope the model of private power through bilateral agreements continues to become more widely adopted,” says Wills, “the benefits to the end user are competition, choice and ultimately a more diverse contribution to the power system.”

The SOLA Group is a vertically integrated Independent Power Producer and a leader in the supply of clean energy solutions to private companies in Africa. SOLA’s mission is to transform Africa through clean energy.

Trevor Noah, the host of The Daily Show, announced on Thursday that he will be leaving the satirical news program after seven years. He did not provide a date for his departure.

The 38-year-old remarked in a video posted to the show’s Twitter account, “My time is up.

After being prevented from traveling due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the South African comic claimed he missed it.

I didn’t travel for two years; I stayed in my apartment, he claimed. “I came to the realization that there is another area of my life I want to continue exploring.”

The show rose to prominence under former host Jon Stewart, who hosted the show for 16 years before leaving in 2015.

It came as a surprise to many when relatively unknown Noah was announced as Stewart’s replacement.

No hints have been given as to who will succeed Noah.

In a statement to US media, Paramount Global cable network, which owns the Comedy Central show, said, “Without a date for his departure, we’re working together on next steps.”

In his 2016 best-selling memoir, “Born a Crime,” Noah described his life in apartheid-era South Africa as the son of a black South African mother and a white Swiss-German father.

I’ve enjoyed hosting this show, Noah remarked; it’s been both one of my biggest difficulties and my greatest delights.
