Dis-Chem expands its omnichannel personalisation service.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, November 24, 2022/ — South Africa’s Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) is the only university of technology in the Western Cape and is also the largest university in the province. Ranked among the top 12 universities in South Africa in 2020, it is home to more than 30,000 students and over 70 programs, spread across 13 campuses and service points.

Rewind to January 1, 2005, and CPUT began life with the merger of Cape Technikon and Peninsula Technikon. (In South Africa, technikons are tertiary level institutions that offer technical and vocational education.) This merger was, in fact, part of a wider, national transformation process that aimed to reshape the landscape of higher education in South Africa. Announced in March 2001 by the then Minister of Education, Kader Asmal, this National Plan on Higher Education included, not only the merger of higher education institutions, but also the formation of universities of technology, an acknowledgement of the direction the future was going to take.

Focusing on Innovation and Efficiency: Harnessing Technology

CPUT’s vision is to be at the heart of education and innovation in technology, across Africa. To achieve this, of course, it needs to have a university campus that is ultra-efficient and environmentally sustainable. Indeed, with the university is always looking for ways to enhance the quality of its teaching, it sees ongoing digital transformation as an imperative to build improved teaching environments.

With technology developing at pace, CPUT knew that it needed to upgrade its overall Information Technology (IT) infrastructure. Aged legacy infrastructure was suffering from bottlenecks that were seriously impacting efficiency. In addition, the IT systems deployed across CPUT’s 13 campuses were distributed and silo’ d, meaning that they couldn’t communicate with each other. In addition, storage resource utilization was extremely high, with some systems reaching end of support. Total storage utilization was anywhere between 85 and 95% and required continuous management. When problems arose — and they did — IT engineers had to waste valuable time doing manual interventions, moving workloads around to ensure business continuity.  This led to inefficient use of university human and IT infrastructure resources. With a challenged service offering because of the strained environment, traffic spikes that happen at the start of every new term, were not handled well. This occurred when students rushed to register for courses, causing systems to be compromised.

Cooperating with CPUT on its digital transformation journey, Huawei first began workshopping with the university’s IT Operations and Maintenance (O&M) team back in June 2019, ultimately recommending OceanStor Dorado all-flash storage to replace the legacy system.  In October 2019 CPUT conducted a Proof of Concept (PoC) test, which convinced the team to include Huawei in their RFP process. After a vigorous procurement process managed by CPUT’s Procurement Services Department, Huawei was awarded the contract.  This was because Huawei met both the technical and commercial requirements set out by CPUT.

High Performance, High Availability, and Easy to Use

Huawei OceanStor Dorado all-flash storage uses proprietary hardware, End to End (E2E) Non-Volatile Memory express (NVMe) architecture, and Huawei’s intelligent FlashLink algorithm, which optimizes communication between controllers and Solid-State Drives (SSDs). Backed up by RAID Triple-Parity (RAID-TP) technology, the smart SSD enclosure can tolerate the simultaneous failures of three SSDs and reconstruct 1 TB of data within 25 minutes. In addition, the storage system offers comprehensive enterprise-grade features, such as 3 second periodic snapshots, setting a new standard for storage product reliability.

OceanStor Dorado all-flash storage systems also employ a next generation hardware platform and ultra-stable SmartMatrix full-mesh architecture, to enhance data reliability and service continuity, ensuring always-on storage services. With a fully interconnected design at both the front- and back-ends, SmartMatrix tolerates seven out of eight controller failures, without disrupting services. In the event of a controller fault, services are switched to a functioning alternative within a single second, creating an uninterrupted link.

With OceanStor Dorado in place, CPUT now enjoys superior performance, millisecond-level latency, and extremely high reliability. Performance bottlenecks have been eliminated and the course registration system works smoothly, even during peak times, significantly improving the university experience for faculty, staff, and students alike, effectively supporting the development of teaching and scientific research. In addition, OceanStor Dorado’s intelligent O&M provides a unified storage resource pool to manage storage resources across all campuses, helping the university identify performance peak hours in advance. It proactively looks for potential component faults — endangering everything from ventilation fans and the power supply to the flash disks themselves — preparing in advance to mitigate and even avoid any impact on services. As a result, the university enjoys better maintenance efficiency, up by 30%, and improved IT resource utilization of up to 70%.

For business, the one word take-away from COP26 was ‘decarbonize.’ Reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases across a company’s operations is rising on the agenda of many companies.

Emissions from electricity use, transport and other energy-consuming activities need to be addressed and reduced. However an overlooked and fairly low-cost way to reduce emissions is by recycling waste materials rather than sending them to landfill.

Track the weight of recyclables

To do this, an efficient measuring and reporting system is required to track the weight of the recyclable materials coming out of the premises.  Using particular ‘conversion factors’, their weight can be translated into an amount of CO2e avoided by circling the materials back into the manufacture of new products again, or  preventing organics such as food waste from going to landfill and discharging methane gas. (CO2e, or carbon dioxide equivalent, is the standard way of abbreviating all greenhouse gases going into our atmosphere, including CO2, methane and others.)

Using conversion factors

Some conversion factors are less rigorous than others.  Those that offer a bulk conversion of mixed waste recyclables take an average weight and emission factor as acceptable. While being less rigorous, this is simpler, as no prior separation of the materials is necessary.

For more credible reporting however, waste materials are first sorted into their different types – for example,  paper, plastic, glass, metals, organics – then weighed separately.  The weights of the materials are converted into the corresponding amount of CO2e emissions that are prevented (or ‘saved’) from going into the atmosphere.

CO2e savings add value

Savings of the CO2e that is emitted can then be included in an annual report, as well as in social and other media content to investors, customers and suppliers. As a positive indication of corporate business responsibility, this enhances reputation and builds brand value.

If a company wants to go carbon neutral, the conversion data can be used to calculate the amount of offsets required to claim carbon neutrality.  This means investing in renewable energy projects such as renewable lighting, heating and mobility to replace ‘traditional’ fossil-fuel based technologies that would have emitted CO2e.

Carbon barriers are going up

 Internationally, carbon barriers are going up for exporters whose products have a high carbon content in their extraction, processing and production. This is especially worrying because South African companies in their operations use Eskom electricity which generates much more CO2e emissions per ton than electricity production does in many other countries.

The EU has introduced what is called a ’carbon border adjustment mechanism.’  This proposes to put a tax on imported products based on the CO2e emissions released when they are manufactured in the country of exportation.  Government, corporates and brands are also setting ambitious targets for carbon reduction.

Early adopters benefit from decarbonizing

The trend to decarbonize will benefit exporters who respond earliest, as they will be first in line to comply with the new border tax and so be preferred by importing countries.

Decarbonizing will also advantage the supplier companies who provide products to the exporter. This is because so much of the carbon intensity in products is embedded along the value chain. 

As these kinds of measures are brought in, companies who can reduce emissions by decarbonizing by whatever means available, will be increasingly rewarded.

SA film “The Fury” bring the reality of GBV to mainstream entertainment

The Fury is a South African film, streaming on Prime Video, which addresses the very relevant and current concerns around GBV brings this very sensitive and relevant topic to mainstream entertainment.

In the run-up to this year’s 16 Days of Activism campaign, which runs from 25 November to 10 December, Prime Video hosted a panel discussion with key crew and cast members and notable GBV activists, to cast a spotlight on a scourge which impacts an untold number of women and children in South Africa.

Hosted by well-known TV and radio personality Penny Lebyane, the panellists included The Fury’s writer and director Tim Greene; Grizelda Grootboom, an activist against human trafficking who supports fellow survivors undergoing rehabilitation; Mandisa Mashego, a feminist, an opponent of patriarchy, and a politician; Thishiwe Ziqubu , the film’s lead cast member; and Robin Davis, who runs a foundation to raise funds for the less fortunate youth with a special emphasis on boy children who have no male role models in their lives.   The debate was held at the Women’s Jail, Constitution Hill, Johannesburg, a fitting symbol for the oppression and struggle that women continue to face.

The film focuses on avenging angel Zola Kunene, who, unable to find justice for her sister who killed herself after being raped a decade ago, lures the man she believes responsible to an empty apartment. She ties him up and puts on a show-trial, live-streamed on social-media. The public will be judge and jury. Should it be necessary, Zola will be the executioner.

“The film is an expression of fury and the levels of rage I felt towards gender-based violence in South Africa. The seeds for this story were sown during the 2018 hearings to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the US Supreme Court despite credible, powerful allegations of sexual assault, which were effectively swept under the carpet.  As a white male in South Africa, this is not my struggle, yet through filmmaking, I had the power and the opportunity to bring this very real issue to life,” says Greene.

Key themes running through the discussion were trauma, anger and healing with participants agreeing on key issues that underpin GBV today and which victims have to deal with: victim blaming and shaming ; a patriarchal society where make dominance has been entrenched for generations; a culture of violence which often starts in the home and extends to public spaces and the workplace in different shapes and forms; and a judicial system unequipped to deal with GBV, a contributor of mob justice to address the glaring gaps which are not being filled by the judicial system.

Social media plays a controversial role in both highlighting and fuelling GBV.  “Social media is a great tool which has allowed women, from all walks of life, to be heard and for them to have a voice, yet we also need to be wary of how social media enables GBV and human trafficking,” Grootboom commented.

Her comment was echoed by Ziqubu who said that while GBV seems to be on the rise, it may be a case of social media giving it prominence. “Social media is a double-edged sword. It has played a strong role in bringing GBV to the front and centre and social issues today, yet at the same time, the deluge of content on this matter has desensitised many of us to the reality and gravity of the situation. It’s all too easy to scroll past content that makes us uncomfortable or that we don’t want to engage with.”

While it was agreed that there is no quick solution to this sad state, the panel members concluded on the absolute necessity of engaging with loved ones and having essential discussions on causes of and concerns relating to GBV and how to mitigate the affliction going forward.

On the basis that entertainment is multifaceted, Prime Video is proud to be streaming local content aligned to key societal issues in South Africa today.  The global theme for this year’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is “UNITE! Activism to end violence against women and girls”, so it was fitting that it provided a platform to engage on contentious topics and to showcase South Africa’s filmmaking talent and its ability to effectively address this critical issue.

Checkers scoops several prestigious design awards

Checkers was crowned the overall winner of the 2022 Retail Design & Development Awards (RDDA) after it won several major awards at the event.

Organised by the South African Council of Shopping Centres (SASC), the RDDA’s identify and award South African shopping centers for outstanding design and economic success.

The Checkers Foods store in Franschhoek received the coveted overall Spectrum Award for 2022, which recognises innovation as well as outstanding economic and creative achievements.

The supermarket also won in the following two categories:

Checkers developed and owns the 9 000m² Drakenstein Sentrum in Paarl which opened its doors late in 2021. “Modern in styling, it is fresh and bright with clean lines. It sits comfortably in its setting taking advantage of the northerly aspect and the views out to the surrounding landscape,” says the SASC.

Apple TV+ releases “Echo 3

Life style and Tech -This Friday, Apple TV+ sees the launch of “Echo 3”, the much anticipated action series directed by Mark Boal, the Academy Award winning writer of The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, for Apple Original Films.

Set in South America, this action-packed thriller follows a brilliant American scientist named Amber Chesborough (Jessica Ann Collins) who goes missing along the Colombia-Venezuela border. When the news is broken to her brother, Bambi (Luke Evans), and her husband, Prince (Michiel Huisman) — two men with deep military experience and complicated pasts — they set off to find Amber at any cost, against the explosive backdrop of a secret war.

“Echo 3” was based on the award-winning series “When Heroes Fly”, created by Omri Givon, and inspired by the eponymous novel by Amir Gutfreund. The series is exclusively produced for Apple TV+ by Keshet Studios, the U.S. production arm of Keshet International. The series is helmed by Boal, who also serves as a director and executive producer alongside Keshet Studios’ Peter Traugott, Jason Horwitch, Omri Givon, Eitan Mansuri, Jonathan Doweck, Mark Sourian, Avi Nir, Alon Shtruzman and Karni Ziv, with Pablo Trapero directing four episodes including the pilot and serving an executive producer.
