How South Africa’s top CFOs manage their time

0

The most sought-after resource every leader wants and needs, and that never seems like enough no matter how much of it you have, is time. For South Africa’s top finance leaders, finding ways to manage their time effectively is crucial to the success of their organisations, as well as finding balance, calm and fulfilment in their personal lives.

You’ve got mail

Most professionals can relate when it comes to identifying the biggest time wasters of the work day. Meetings that go on too long or that could have been an email are a major bug bear for most, but the time spent checking emails seems a close second.

Mark van Deventer, CFO at adidas, says that checking emails can be a time-consuming activity in his day, but that it’s a challenge he’s working on addressing. “I am trying to put a system in place where I only check my mails every two to three hours,” he says.

Mark van Deventer, CFO at adidas

While some find it helpful to adopt new structures and approaches to avoid wasting too much time checking emails, others embrace life outside of the digital realm as a way to avoid their inboxes. For the CFO of Famous Brands, Nelly Shiluvana, being out in the wilderness of the Kruger taught her that she was able to go more than a few hours without checking her emails. “I had to learn to roll with it!” she says.

Early bird or night owl?

Van Deventer considers himself a night owl, and jokes that the workday should only start at 10am, adding that he struggles to get much done during the day when “people are constantly asking you questions, or requesting data to have ‘just in case’”. Shiluvana, on the other hand, is a morning person and loves to start her day early and when she’s fresh, to prevent “dragging out” the tasks she has on her to do list.

Spreadsheets will always have a special place in every CFOs heart (proven by an entire day dedicated to Excel and its appreciation!), and many would believe the typical CFO spends hours milling through spreadsheets. However, CFOs are increasingly careful of using their time more wisely.  This includes how they spend time destressing from their demanding jobs and finding balance in life.

“I go skydiving,” says Shiluvana nonchalantly. “There’s nothing like that shot of adrenaline for that 60 to 90 seconds, which is exactly what I need to keep my day going.”

Adrenaline junkie sports aside, Van Deventer says that finding ways to destress outside of work is key, and emphasises the importance of mental, emotional and physical support. “I have a big support group, from life coaches to family and friends, but another way I keep sane is through exercise,” he says.

Find out how the nation’s top CFOs spend their time in and out of office by watching the ‘How I Work’ series, proudly sponsored by SAICA and Finnivo®, and get to know how the best get it done.

FlySafair: Cape Town to Windhoek route

0

FlySafair, South Africa’s leading low-cost airline, is now officially flying from Cape Town to Windhoek, Namibia. This marks the first regional route for FlySafair from the Mother City, making cross-border travel more accessible and affordable for customers.

In honour of the occasion, South Africa’s Minister of Tourism, Patricia de Lille joined the FlySafair team and other delegates at Cape Town International Airport at the send-off of the inaugural flight to Windhoek on Tuesday, 22 October 2024, underscoring the importance of the new route in fostering regional tourism and economic growth.

“We are extremely excited to have this highly anticipated route operational before the summer holidays at the end of the year and offer our customers further opportunities to visit loved ones or explore the sights of Namibia and its capital from our doorstep. It has been a long-time goal of ours to expand into the Windhoek market and with more aircraft availability in Cape Town, we have been able to make this a reality, enhancing connectivity between two popular destinations in southern Africa,” says Kirby Gordon, Chief Marketing Officer at FlySafair.

In the past, flying to Windhoek was a costly exercise, with airfares ranging between R5 000 and R9 000. FlySafair is now offering tickets from just R1 800*, providing a budget-friendly option for both local and foreign travellers to see family and friends, pursue business interests, enjoy Windhoek’s culture and hospitality, or venture further to Namibia’s other unique natural attractions. These include the Namib Desert, the oldest desert in the world; the Fish River Canyon, the Skeleton Coast with its extraordinary landscapes; and Etosha National Park, one of the largest wildlife reserves in Africa.

FlySafair’s Cape Town to Windhoek flights will run twice a week on Tuesdays and Saturdays, meeting a demand for increased travel on the route, which has yet to fully recover to its pre-Covid 19 levels, currently sitting at 83% of previous passenger volumes. With FlySafair’s new route, there is significant potential to grow tourism and strengthen travel connections between Namibia and South Africa.

“By offering competitive fares on this expansion of our network, we are helping to boost the travel industry in the southern African region. This new route reinforces our commitment to offering safe, reliable, and affordable flights for everyone. Whether it is for leisure, business, or family reunions, we aim to make travelling in South Africa and beyond more accessible than ever,” adds Gordon.

The introduction of the Cape Town to Windhoek route adds to FlySafair’s other regional destinations, including Harare and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

How holistic education future-proofs youth for the future

0

Teachers are the key to the disruptive transformation the education world needs. But have our education systems adapted enough to support them in this modern world, where students are often as tech savvy as teachers? With the celebration of World Teachers’ Day in October, let’s reflect on how teachers are transforming education and the challenges that lie ahead.

No technology, not even the most sophisticated artificial intelligence, can replace the work of a teacher and the magic they perform in the classroom: the deep knowledge of what a student is like and the special connection between student and teacher cannot be developed by machines; nor can algorithms inspire their students, spark their curiosity, or adapt appropriately to the changing circumstances of a class (Cooper, 2017).

Teachers have always been the driving force of education systems. Without them, it’s impossible to provide quality, inclusive and equitable education to all students.  More than ever we need teachers who are motivated and able to motivate, who are able to spark their students’ love of learning with the support of technology; teachers who encourage creativity, critical thinking, teamwork, empathy and resilience, and who are able to adapt quickly to a rapidly changing context.

As more and more research demonstrates the importance of social-emotional learning and whole child development, schools and their teachers are beginning to take a holistic approach to education.  Holistic education, as practised by ACUDEO Colleges, is a comprehensive approach to teaching that addresses the emotional, social, ethical, and academic needs of students in an integrated manner. This educational philosophy emphasises the development of the whole child, ensuring that students can thrive academically, socially and emotionally.

It focuses on developing each student on every possible front within the school environment, from developing their creative and artistic ability, physical ability on the sports field, intellectual through class work and extension activities, social to emotional, providing students with support and development opportunities.

“In celebration of World Teachers’ Day this month, I am proud of the dedication and commitment to excellence displayed by our teachers in developing our students on every level, from the sports field to the classroom and beyond,” remarks May Alli, Dean of Teaching and Learning at ACUDEO Colleges.

This type of education provides students with the tools they need to manage stress, develop positive relationships, and take care of their physical health. As a result, these students are more likely to succeed in school and in life.

“One of my favourite ever lessons was the one where I spent the lesson simply allowing my students to tell each other how they were feeling that day. This set the tone for my entire day and the students really became close after,” shares Michael Dos Santos, Academic Coordinator – High School, for ACUDEO College.

Holistic education has many benefits for both teachers and students alike. By catering to individual learning styles, it fosters a supportive environment, which enhances academic performance across diverse student backgrounds.  Engaging students in real-world problem-solving projects cultivates critical-thinking skills essential for their future careers.

The holistic approach mitigates the psychological impacts of adverse circumstances like poverty or violence on academic success. By prioritising social and emotional learning alongside academics, students develop self-awareness and confidence, leading to a greater sense of social responsibility.

“I remember a student who was very disruptive in class, always getting up and wandering around. So, one of our teachers began to give him physical work to do in between activities and the change was remarkable! He became their best student almost overnight,” shares Dos Santos.

Holistic education often involves collaboration with community members, enhancing students’ understanding of their roles within society and encouraging active participation in their learning.  Students learn essential life skills such as effective communication, collaboration, and creativity, preparing them for the complexities of modern society.

This approach to education is beneficial for students and teachers because it can help them to better understand and manage their own health, as well as the health of others.  It encourages students to develop healthy habits, coping skills as well as how to manage stress and anxiety. Students develop and use their own emotional toolkit in the classroom, sports field and cultural space, where they can collectively share and discuss their own emotional state, cultivating their emotional awareness.

Assessing the success of holistic approaches is generally undertaken in the sense of assessing skills and competencies. This model not only enhances academic achievement but also prioritises emotional well-being and personal development, preparing students for success in both their academic pursuits and life beyond school.

“We have found that success is accompanied by changes in student relations, a greater camaraderie and a real sense of belonging among our learners,” says Adilla Okkers, Academic Coordinator – Primary School, for ACUDEO College. “We develop natural communities of learning over time and the academic results produced improve as we see our learners become more engaged as a whole,” adds Okkers.

“Our exceptional men and women who take up the call to the classroom must be commended for their daily sacrifice and drive. So, I wish all of my ACUDEO teachers and all teachers in general, a very happy and blessed teachers’ day and would like to thank them for using their exceptional skills to improve the lives of our students,” adds Alli.

IMAX Enhanced is TCL’s home theatre secret weapon TCL has worked with IMAX to make home movies even better

0

When it comes to movies, many agree that going to the theatres is still the best way to enjoy films. If you fall into that camp, TCL is trying to sway you and it is working with a giant in the movie business in the form of IMAX.

TCL has partnered with IMAX to bring the IMAX Enhanced certification to its C755 QD-Mini LED 4K TVs. This certification aims to “unleash the power of IMAX at home” by creating an ecosystem of audiovisual hardware and software that works in tandem to replicate the fine-tuned IMAX theatre experience.

This is accomplished by meticulous testing to meet the high standards of IMAX when it comes to colour, brightness, contrast, resolution, calibration and more. Those who have witnessed the immense amount of work behind the scenes to keep IMAX theatres running as well as they do will know just how difficult the job is. IMAX Enhanced seeks to bring that to you without all the difficulties and without the need to ever leave your home.

The C755 also goes above and beyond the IMAX certification to bring you more. This 4K UHD is also a high refresh rate 144Hz screen making it perfect not just for movies, but also TV and even games. The high refresh rate pairs perfectly with the Game Master 2.0 software suite and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro to bring you all the high end features of gaming monitors to your TV.

The advanced Quantum Dot-Mini LED panel is the heart of this display and a big reason why TCL and IMAX are so confident in its performance. The unbeatable HDR 1 300 nits of brightness, full array local dimming and the ability to replicate one billion hues of colour all combine to make a viewing experience that you could only see in the theatres just a few short years ago.

While the Quantum Dot-Mini LED panel is the heart, the AiPQ PROCESSOR 3.0 is the brain. Leveraging the might of artificial intelligence to optimise content and optimise settings on the fly, this processor pulls from both the storied history of filmmaking and the future of AI.

Once you have your new C755, make sure you also enjoy streaming content that is also IMAX Enhanced. With the C755 you can enjoy fantastic audio without the need to invest in a sound bar or any external audio systems. This TV comes packed with a 2.1 speaker array that is certified by the audio experts at Dolby Atmos. A high level audio performance is part of receiving the IMAX Enhanced certification, and TLC has accomplished that here.

Rob in the 18 Area: A revolution in sports entertainment

0

Prepare to be captivated by a groundbreaking new sports show that’s redefining the way we experience football.

Legendary sportscaster and Showmax Premier League Ambassador Robert Marawa is at the helm of a new  football show, Rob in the 18 Area, which is set to revolutionise sports entertainment on Showmax Premier League.

Forget the traditional sports show format. This isn’t about dry statistics or regurgitated match highlights. Rob in the 18 Area dives deep into the culture, lifestyle, and passion that fuels the beautiful game.

Joined by a crew of dedicated football enthusiasts, Marawa brings a fresh perspective to both the Premier League and the Betway Premiership (PSL). From in-depth match analysis to candid conversations with fans, this show has something for everyone.

The creative agency behind the show, 22Ours, said Rob in the 18 Area goes way beyond just discussing the game.

“It explores the thoughts, experiences, and passions of everyday supporters,” said Andile Mthethwa, director of Rob in the 18 Area. “It’s about what fans truly feel about their teams’ performances, the cultural dynamics, and the swagger their clubs represent.”

Mthethwa said the show represents a modern take on sports culture, engaging in real conversations with everyday sports enthusiasts.

“It’s not just about what happens on the pitch, but the vibe and energy that surround the game, making it a dynamic space for fans to express their love for soccer from a lifestyle perspective.”

The show, which airs weekly on Showmax Premier League with five episodes currently available, has already hosted guests such as former Banyana Banyana footballer Amanda Dlamini, broadcaster, MC and sports enthusiast Lerato Phago and many more.

In the latest episode, Marawa sits down with Lekoko La Space and Amahle-Imvelo Jaxa to discuss the upcoming Manchester United-Chelsea clash (November 3 2024). Expect heated debates, hilarious moments, and unforgettable insights.

Host Marawa said he was thrilled to be a part of a football show with a unique concept. “We want to give football fans a cutting-edge sports show,” said Marawa. “We’re bringing together different voices, different perspectives, and a whole lot of fun.”

According to Marawa, the show promotes the PSL and PL with a unique perspective.

“We believe both the PSL and Premier League should be intertwined and we shouldn’t have our kids growing up understanding one league and not the other. We have frank conversations where we invite all of the debate, the rivalry begins on set and is then taken to the stadium. We also want the show to be interactive and encourage all those watching the show to engage with us,” he said.

Mthethwa said it was an honour to work alongside Marawa.

“Robert Marawa is widely regarded as the most prominent sports anchor and journalist across Africa, with his insights often considered gospel in the world of sports,” said Mthethwa.

“We were tasked with the exciting challenge of bringing this legend back to TV, but not in the conventional format of a sports show. This led to the creation of Rob in the 18 Area. As the director and editor of the show, it’s been a blast working on set, especially with a talented individual such as Robert.”

Don’t miss this cutting edge sports show, available to stream now on Showmax Premier League.

Sustainable Tourism: A Rising Priority for the Hospitality and Travel Sectors

0

With World Sustainability Day on the horizon, the focus is turning towards an increasingly critical issue—sustainable tourism. The recent signing of the Climate Change Act by President Cyril Ramaphosa has made it clear: South Africa’s tourism sector needs to evolve if it wants to meet the challenges of climate change head-on. Companies such as The Capital Hotels, Apartments and Hotels, SolarEdge and Cathay Pacific are at the forefront of this transition, illustrating that sustainability can coexist with growth and innovation.

Pioneering Green Practices in Hospitality

Marc Wachsberger, CEO of The Capital Hotels, sees the Climate Change Act as a pivotal moment for the hospitality industry. “The Act highlights the critical need for sustainable practices across all sectors, and tourism is no exception. For South African hospitality to thrive, we must adopt energy-efficient solutions that reduce our carbon footprint while ensuring a quality experience for our guests,” he says.

The Capital Hotels, Apartments and Resorts has become a champion of sustainable hospitality, investing millions into renewable energy initiatives to power 80% of its properties with solar by 2025. This move not only aims to reduce the group’s carbon footprint but also provides a buffer against the challenges of load shedding—an issue that continues to affect businesses across the country.  The Capital is also on the cusp of signing an agreement with Discovery Green which will provide wind and solar power for their hotels and will cover 90% of their hotel usage.

Beyond energy, The Capital is leading the charge in water conservation, an increasingly critical issue in South Africa. The group has implemented a borehole project at its SEVEN Villa and The Capital Zimbali properties, with The Capital On The Park slated to be next. Currently, this initiative allows Zimbali’s water needs to be fully met by borehole sources, reducing dependence on municipal supply. The aim is for the other properties to follow suit. Moreover, The Capital Pearls and Zimbali, two luxury spots in Durban, have embraced innovative measures to address water scarcity and quality:

  • Blue Drop Standards: These resorts adhere to a South African programme ensuring top water quality and sanitation for guests, enhancing the safety and reliability of their water sources.
  • Advanced Purification Systems: These systems treat and reuse water, reducing reliance on municipal supplies and conserving precious resources.
  • Internal Water Circulation: The Capital Pearls employs an internal system to manage water use, ensuring efficient usage and reducing the demand on local water infrastructure.
  • Reverse Osmosis Systems: The Capital Zimbali has a backup reverse osmosis system that ensures clean water availability even if the city supply fails.

These investments form part of a broader drive within the sector to implement energy-efficient practices. From water conservation measures to solar-powered energy systems, The Capital is leading the charge, demonstrating that environmental responsibility can go hand-in-hand with business growth.

Laurence Lipjes, General Manager for SolarEdge MEA

Powering Remote and Sustainable Luxury

Sustainable energy needs green energy and SolarEdge Technologies has emerged as a vital partner in the hospitality industry’s sustainability efforts. SolarEdge is a visionary leader in smart energy technology, committed to harnessing the power of the sun to create a sustainable future. A prime example close to home is Atzaro Okavango, a luxurious bush lodge in Botswana that now operates completely off the grid. Equipped with SolarEdge’s 216kWp solar system, Atzaro uses SE33.3k inverters, P730 power optimizers, and the innovative SolarGik Single Axis tracking system—the first of its kind in Africa. With 400kWh of storage capacity integrated with backup generators, with infrastructure in place the lodge has achieved complete energy independence.

Laurence Lipjes, General Manager for SolarEdge MEA, highlights the significance of this installation: “At SolarEdge, we focus on delivering energy solutions that allow our clients to excel, even in the most remote locations. The Atzaro Okavango project demonstrates that luxury and sustainability can seamlessly coexist. By offering reliable, durable and adaptable systems, we enable properties like Atzaro to minimise their environmental impact without compromising on performance. Additionally, the remote location of the lodge, combined with the advanced safety features built into SolarEdge products, ensures peace of mind for clients, particularly when maintenance or emergency support is not immediately accessible.”

SolarEdge’s innovations extend beyond the hospitality sector, addressing a wide range of energy needs with their photovoltaic (PV) systems, storage solutions, and EV charging capabilities. As a leader in smart energy technology, the company is helping to redefine what is possible for sustainable tourism across the continent.

Shanna Docherty, Regional Head of Trade Sales for the Middle East and Africa (MEA) at Cathay Pacific.

Towards a Cleaner Sky

For Cathay Pacific, sustainability takes to the skies. The airline has committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and has set a near-term goal to reduce its carbon intensity by 12% from 2019 levels by 2030. A central part of this strategy is the increased use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), a cleaner alternative to fossil jet fuel that is produced from sustainable and renewable sources, which can reduce over 80% of its lifecycle carbon emissions. The airline has been one of the pioneers, working to expand the SAF supply chain by partnering with global suppliers and corporate partners to scale up the demand.

“We’re on a mission to move people forward sustainably and responsibly, and it’s a collective effort to travel greener together.” says Shanna Docherty, Regional Head of Trade Sales for Middle East and Africa (MEA) at Cathay Pacific. “We’re committed to the use of SAF and working closely with our partners to make air travel more sustainable. These efforts not only help us achieve our climate targets but also letting our customers to be part of the journey together.

Additionally, the airline is tackling waste reduction. By 2025, Cathay Pacific aims to reduce single-use plastic items to just 1.5 pieces per passenger, down from 7.7 in 2019, and to cut cabin waste by 30% by 2030. The focus is on incorporating circular economy principles, from how raw materials are produced, to how we design more reusable products, to how we recycle waste products.

Collectively Committing to a Greener Future

Together, The Capital Hotels, SolarEdge and Cathay Pacific demonstrate that sustainability in tourism is achievable through collaboration and innovation. As World Sustainability Day draws near, their efforts highlight the importance of transitioning to greener practices—not only for the health of the planet but also for the longevity and success of the tourism industry.

By embracing renewable energy, investing in cutting-edge technology, and rethinking travel’s environmental impact, these industry leaders are setting a new standard for sustainable tourism in South Africa and beyond. Their collective commitment is a reminder that while the journey towards sustainability may be complex, the rewards—for businesses, travellers, and the environment—are well worth the effort.

Seamless AWS migrations with Vodacom Business, now an AWS Migration Competency partner

0

Organisations of all sectors and sizes want to improve productivity and competitiveness through their digital systems. Yet, as newer technologies increasingly leverage modern services, many businesses struggle to migrate partially or completely to the cloud. No cloud migration is the same, depending heavily on the company’s specific technologies, processes, and digital plans.

Every business needs a reliable migration partner who knows what it is doing – and has the recognition to prove its abilities. Vodacom Business, an Amazon Web Services (AWS) Migration Competency partner, brings that experience and competency to the table.

To make migrations more predictable and seamless, AWS has created the AWS Migration Competency. Partners that achieve this competency have the validated expertise to develop and implement successful migrations to AWS systems.

Vodacom Business is already an AWS Advanced Consulting Partner and AWS Direct Connect Service Delivery Program partner. After two years of investment and focus, it has demonstrated the technical proficiencies and proven customer successes to become an AWS Migration Competency partner.

“Becoming an AWS Migration Competency partner was a two-year journey for us,” says Prince Hlatshwayo, Executive Head of Cloud, Hosting and Security at Vodacom Business. “We established numerous competencies and completed various migration projects. We have proven that we can deliver faster assessments, provide practical and relevant customer business cases, automate re-platforming and refactoring, and help establish the needed levels of governance and management.”

Achieving these goals is not simple, which is why few partners qualify for AWS Migration Competency.

They must demonstrate their abilities in the following:

  • Discovery, planning, and recommendation
  • Business case analysis
  • Application mobility
  • Data mobility, and
  • Application monitoring and orchestration

“Migrating and adapting applications and other technical components to work in a cloud platform is risky and time-consuming. Many business digitisation attempts fall short or fail outright, and the complexities of effective cloud migration often aggravate those failures. But with Vodacom Business and our AWS Migration Competency status, you know you are collaborating with experienced experts. We know what to look out for and how to avoid problems, and we are incredibly skilled and close to the AWS cloud ecosystem.”

Vodacom Business has helped thousands of customers adopt the powerful business-first technologies from AWS, saving migration costs and time and helping them continue expanding their digital capabilities as they grow and modernise.

Why AWS? For Vodacom Business, it is the obvious choice in next-generation cloud services:

  • Thousands of satisfied customers: The partner ecosystem of AWS helps customers successfully migrate all types of workloads, from a handful to tens of thousands of servers.
  • Extensive migration experience: AWS has developed the methodology, best practices, tools, and services to help simplify and accelerate migrations.
  • Quick time to value: AWS simplifies each step of the migration process, reducing the effort and complexity involved.

As an AWS Migration Competency partner, Vodacom Business joins an elite group that conducts and implements AWS migrations based on these expectations.

“When you collaborate with an AWS Migration Competency partner, you can bank on several things,” says Hlatshwayo. “You can expect better business agility, more cost efficiency, improved control and visibility, and getting the best performance from your workloads in the cloud, even if they are legacy systems. This is all packaged in a streamlined migration journey. That is the AWS Cloud Migration Competency promise and the Vodacom Business promise.”

Modernising your business technologies creates new business opportunities. Who you select to help you with that journey makes all the difference. Contact Vodacom Business and experience what many customers – and AWS – know: seamless and competent cloud migration that will deliver value and results quickly.

Slow Travel: The Holiday Trend that’s Picking up Speed for Tourists in a Hurry to Decelerate

0

We live in a world of instant everything – instant messages, instant meals and in fact, just about anything on demand. We’ve grown accustomed to living life in fast-forward but when it comes to holidays, shouldn’t we be hitting the brakes instead of the accelerator? Enter the concept of slow travel – a mindful approach to holidays and tourism that is gaining traction among seasoned globetrotters and local adventurers alike.

“Slow travel is about the journey, not just the destination. A worldwide movement, many tourists are moving away from whirlwind tours, preferring to linger at and savour the places they visit and forming deeper connections with them,” comments Shaun Lamont, Managing Director of First Group Hotels and Resorts. “It’s a shift from seeing everything to choosing fewer experiences that resonate more.”

The Upside of Slowing Down

So, instead of rushing from one tourist destination to another as you tick boxes off a must-see list, slow travel is characterised by quality over quantity and true relaxation. It’s about immersing yourself in the essence of the place you’re visiting, learning the history, discovering the hidden gem of a restaurant down a side street, taking meanders off the beaten track, or striking up a conversation with a local.

Full shot traveling couple sitting

“It involves a deliberate approach and meaningful exploration,” says Lamont. “We’ve noticed a shift in guest behaviour at some of our resorts and hotels, with some showing a definite interest in experiencing more local attractions and staying for longer periods,” he adds. “We are also seeing more people who attend conferences at our properties choosing to stay on afterwards just to relax and take in the sights.”

Lamont notes this was especially evident at the Group’s Bushman’s Nek Resort in the Southern Drakensberg. “Before the hotel tragically burnt down in August, guests were opting for longer stays to fully explore the area’s hiking trails, fly-fishing spots and San rock art sites.”

Disconnect and Reconnect

But why is slow travel gaining momentum? Lamont says that in our hyper-connected world where we’re constantly bombarded with information and rushing around, slow travel offers a much-needed respite.

“This trend in travel allows tourists to disconnect from the digital noise, reconnect with themselves and literally take things slower,” he explains. “The future of travel is not necessarily about ticking off every ‘must see’ tourist spot or destination on a list. Many people are investing in authentic travel experiences to gain a genuine understanding of the world around them. That’s why slow travel is also known as “mindful” travel.”

In fact, slow travel is being recognised as a balm for our mental well-being too. A less hurried pace allows one time to chill and truly unwind, combating the stress that can often accompany travel.

Win-Win

Slow travel also brings various benefits. By staying longer in one place, it reduces the need for frequent transportation, contributing to a smaller carbon footprint. Supporting local businesses also contributes to sustainability practices through locally sourced goods and services.

“Its impact is particularly significant on the economies of the relevant communities,” Lamont explains. It creates a mutually beneficial situation: tourists immerse themselves in authentic local experiences, while the relevant communities receive much-needed and sustained economic support.”.

Local Sector Response

South Africa, with its stunning yet varied landscapes and rich diversity, is an ideal destination for slow travel, and our local tourism sector is adapting to cater for this movement.

Lamont says that hotels are curating experiences that showcase local culture, while tour operators are designing more flexible, immersive itineraries.

“Slow travel is a shift that’s changing not just how we travel, but why we travel,” he concludes.

So, next time you are planning a trip, why not try slowing things down? Stay a little longer, wander a bit further and open yourself to unexpected adventures while making magical, lasting memories that stay with you long after you’ve returned home.
